My parents were Silent Generation, the most important attribute I received from them was my upbringing. They taught me values, how to live with discipline, and how to cope during crisis. They were great parents.

    • @alvexok5523
      @alvexok5523 6 місяців тому +9

Yeah. But the Greatest generation was even more into discipline and values, and coping with a crises due to the Depression and WW2. But really, the generation before them was even stronger yet in those qualities, they lived through WW1 and in a world where smallpox, scarlet fever, and polio was still widespread. That generation grew up while there were still stage coaches around, and men always dressed formal and women were always in floorlength dresses. They weren't included in this video because they're the most recent generation where there are now absolutely no more survivors left

My parents were also from the Silent Generation. My dad summed it up best, "don't depend on a man to support you, get your education, and be independent. You can be anything you want to be as long as you put your mind to it. Everyone is replaceable (in the workplace only), always respect other people's life journey because those who live in glass houses should not throw stones." And so much more. My parents weren't perfect, but they were to me.

As a generation Z born in 1999, I can defiantly relate more to a generation X or Millennial as I have a love for music during the 80s and 90s and personally love any kind of culture related to those decades. I think those two generations had way more fun growing up then we did.

I am a Xennial. I was born in 1981 right smack in the middle of the Gen X and Millennial switchover. I relate to Gen X because I my childhood was completely analog, but also Millennials since my teenage years became digital.
I feel I had the best of both worlds. As a young teen, my friends and I ran around the community with no cellphones nor a care or worry in the world.
Although when I turned 16-17 and could drive, I got my first Nokia cellphone. I was 13-14 when the internet became a thing albeit on a 56k dial-up network....lol! It was so slow but we didn't know any better!
I grew up listening to late 80s-early 90s rock and witnessed the birth of rap music along with alternative music!
Three 6 Mafia, Bone Thugs, Linkin Park, and Pendulum were my favorite bands/groups!
I truly think I had the best of both of these Generations. I also believe I had the most fun growing up and experienced the time when everything we know now was brand new. Great times!

When I was a kid, I thought the Greatest Generation were always old, and backward. As an adult, I realised that they were some of the toughest, who went from deprivation to fighting a war to white collar jobs. My grandfather hated hearing my mother's Bob Dylan records and seeing her in mini skirts, and 30 years later my mother hated that I dyed my hair green, pierced my nose, wouldn't tuck my shirt in, and didn't have a summer job. Now I get pissed at my teenage relatives for being lazy, unmotivated, entitled, and how they wallow in helplessness. But compared to my parents, I was overentitled and lazy. Just like my father was overentitled compared to his father.

I'm a Cusper - born on the threshold between the Baby Boomers and Gen-X, though I sometimes feel like part of the Silent Generation as I was raised primarily by my grandparents (and my father was the youngest of their seven children, two of whom died very young). I was fortunate enough to spend a lot of time with my great-grandparents (The Greatest Generation), spent a great deal of time in my grandparents' social circles, accelerated through school so most of my classmates were late Baby Boomers, and most of my neighborhood friends were early Gen-Xers.
Needless to say, I'm quite eclectic. My top-ten favorite movies span more than a hundred years, from H.G.Wells' "The Man Who Could Work Miracles" through mid-century classics like "Heaven Can Wait" and "The Quiet Man" and on to "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" and "Mitchells vs the Machines".
From my perspective, the big things we lost - primarily around Millennials - were learning to be self-sufficient, learning how to deal with failure, and true empathy. Millennials and Gen-Zers, by and large, are highly self-entitled and believe they should simply be given anything they want. They go six-figures into debt to 'earn' ludicrous college degrees in worthless majors, then throw tantrums because they're hardly even fit for minimum-wage jobs.
The most important lesson my great-grandfather ever taught me: "Life will kick you in the teeth and knock you face-first into the mud any chance it gets; that's just life. But it don't matter if everyone offers you a hand up or no one does - the only person who decides whether you*stay* in the mud is you." The second-most important lesson he taught me was: "The toughest thing about being decent folk is having to stand up for the rights of indecent folk. If they don't have the right to live their lives as they see fit, you don't have the right to do it either."
This was a man who lied about his age to fight in both World Wars - he wasn't quite 15 when he enlisted in The Great War and had just turned 40 when he enlisted in World War II. When I asked him why he did that, he said there was a long answer and a short answer. The long answer went on to explain one's individual duty to their family, friends, community, and country. The short answer: "I didn't want to learn German."

I (a boomer) once commented to my mother, a serious student of classical music, that it was cool how she and Dad made efforts to enjoy our music, which was, frankly, no wonder, since it was the best ever. She said she remembered her mother griping about mom's brother's music, as he was in a jazz band. Then my grandmother had laughed as she recalled her own father complaining, "What is this "Everybody's doin' it, doin' it, doin' the Turkey Trot"? (1911)

@@ClementineShmementine I don't know. People have always complained about parents who were so wrapped up in work that they neglected their families, or young people thinking their parents just didn't understand them, and so on. Everybody complains and loves to complain. However, I think families stayed at home more back then and did things together, even if it was just watching favorite TV shows. You didn't have 5 people in a house, each glued to a separate device. I grew up thinking that the family was a unit and the basic unit of society. I raised my three children that way, and I see it in their own kids. Maybe I was lucky.

She cares deeply for other people, and has helped raise me into the person I am today. I’ll be 17 this July, and I’m so happy that she gets to be here, with us, healthy: getting watch her Great Granddaughter grow up! I am grateful and thankful for it every day. It’s hard to imagine what they’ve gone through: the Great Depression, television, WW2, MLK, JFK, the computer, the internet, the first video games, 9/11, the first smart phones, social media, the first electric cars, the first self driving cars, the first Ai, Alexa and Siri, and of course the fight between Russia and Ukraine. FUN FACTS: The first named generation (not covered in this video) were those born in the late 1880s and may have fought or come of age during WWI, known as the "Lost Generation". What's more, there are lesser known terms for certain generations. Older ones of the Greatest Generation are often referred to as the "Interbellum Generation" (came of age during the Roaring 1920s), while Gen X is sometimes referred to as the "MTV Generation", just as Millennials are often referred to as "Gen Y", and Gen Z is often referred to as the "iGen". Finally, those on the cusp of X and Millennials are often referred to as "Xennials" and those on the cusp of Millennials and Z are often referred to as "Zillennials".

Here's one I heard before I heard 'Gen Z' back in the late 90s before the first ones were born but used in some media to describe their coming, 'Gen DotCom'. I was surprised it never gained traction. Maybe that will change as Gen Y was called that forever till around the mid 90s when Millennial suddenly took off. That made sense rather than just the next letter, I mean Gen X meant something. Y, Z, Alpha are meaningless. The name should reflect the Gen & their times

Defining characteristics of generations under 25 years old is kind of stupid. I'm technically a gen Z and had only developped some sort of identity for myself at around 20 years old. To draw characteristics of 9-year-olds and below that age is utterly pointless, even if we want to keep it within sociological predictions, just because this generation is not ready to define itself yet. In most cases "world events in the formative years" speaks more about a general sense of what this generation is (or could be) and what defines their experiences.

I agree, a generation is generally 30 years give or take a decade but all these generation labels are much lower and it even when talking about people who grew up around the same time don't accurately portray things. There is also no defining line between any generation as there is always much overlap with people being born all the time so none of this makes much sense imo.

As for someone who is an elderly Millennial and was born in '82 I have to say that I'm much more related to Generation X then I am to the much younger Millennials. I think it's because of the lifestyle that I lived growing up in the early 90's to where life as I once knew it was so simple and less high tech, which in some ways can explain why I seem to be set in my own ways of thinking, but even for a guy in his early 40's I find it difficult to adapt to the very ways of today's modern technology that is being used today, which can explain why I'm starting to think like an individual who is in his 50's & 60's age range that's use to things having to be done the old fashioned way.

I was 22 in 1989. It actually WAS pretty epic. Gen Xers like me and my friends have lots of wild stories. Here's one: I was hammered all day and in a blackout at the Indy 500 in 1990. Huge party, fastest race in history up until that time. After the race, we were partying in a hotel parking lot where the drivers stayed, as I was connected to one particular driver and his sponsor. Anyway, a guy came up to us and introduced himself as John Travolta. It was funny cuz he needed NO intro but endearing how humble and down to Earth he was/is. I made him a bloody Mary and got my picture taken with my arm around him giving him the rabbit ears (I asked his permission first). I had to be told this the next day by my slightly less inebriated friends who couldn't believe my boldness and ability to keep from embarrassing him or annoying/offending him. I now have the picture framed after not seeing it until 12 years later. Got it as a gift. Anyway, shortly after my mom gave me this framed 8x10 notorious photo I got his address, wrote a long letter about how the photo got lost across country all those years, and mailed it to him. John remembered the incident/occasion and mailed it back to me. People ask me about that photo all the time. This is the short version, but I loved your envy of Gen X and assure you that is how people my age felt about those who grew up in the 50's and 60's. I will say that my friends and I always talk about how grateful we were to have grown up in the 70's and 80's and how it can never be duplicated. 1985 was such a cool year to graduate! God bless!

I feel it was probably more common before internet times, which would’ve been before I existed (Basically, before 1997)… I am glad that you appreciate my fondness for your generation. A lot of Boomers love to put us Zoomers down, it’s really not fair. My parents are Boomers, my father being born in 1961 and mother 1964. My husband was born in 1982 and I was born in 1985...we just feel like we NEVER fit in with the millennials. We feel like we bend more towards Gen X. I think that "millennials" having more stereotypical millennial characteristics really began with those born around 1988 and forwards, because they actually had internet and cell phones at a younger age in their more formative years. The internet was barely around when we were tweens in the mid 90s (lmao it was a joke it was so slow and you had to pay by the minute and it blocked up the phone lines too), and it wasn't until we were in college that the internet and actually having a cell phone to use (but it was still a simple flip phone or brick phone) became commonplace.
We were still taught the dewey decimal system, how to use paper maps to navigate, used pay phones, didn't often have A/C in cars or at home, were allowed to run around and play outside/go to stores by ourselves, and we were old enough to understand what happened during 9/11 and were close to military age then (and we remember life pre 9/11 well), etc.
I think the real generational shift in thinking happened with the kids that grew up having internet, social media, and iPhones during their tween and teen years. Did something to make their brains different. Often a generation should probably be divided into a new one or extended for a few more years longer depending upon any earth shattering events or tech that happens to occur or not occur. These changes are the things that seem to create sudden shifts in thinking, not necessarily the number of years being around 15-20yrs.

Just watched this video with my German high school students. This is what they're saying:
On the one hand, this video is very interesting, we like the pictures and animations. On the other hand, the specific generations were not demonstrated as realistic as they are in real life. Also, the video could have been a little slower and less chaotic.
It's hilarious how he said "happened in..." even if these events are yet to come. Anyway, nice work dude, keep it like that.
In my opinion, the video was interesting because we saw the heroes our grandparents and parents had liked. And we saw the events that had influenced them. But I don't like that there are some predictions in the video.
The video is well-structured with great pictures. The important things are well-summarized; you get a perfect overview about the different generations.
