Thanks e7. I think what I enjoy about Jacob is that he debunks the idea that people don't like anything beyond a 4 chord tune. There are music theorista and composers who are earth shattering musicians, but Jacob is also an ambassador where others are not.
It's extremely important to have someone to represent the wonderful music ideas that humanity has accrued over literally centuries.

I was never a huge fan on his voice, but I am a huge fan of him as a musician! He's so immensely talented that I am mesmerized by everything he does. If you get the opportunity, I highly recommend checking out his original albums Djesse Vol 1-3. Each volume is a different musical style. There's also a volume 4 planned but not sure of the release date.
Heya smill! I agree, I think the appeal of Jacob is his next level musicianship. I will definitely check out his other stuff.
We come for his next level musicianship, but we stay for the magical child-like spirit that lives in his music..

Very late to the party, but he was a boy treble as a kid, he played Miles in Benjamin Britten's Turn of the Screw.
I'm the BIGGEST Jacob fan but I wonder sometimes if his top notes are just him never re-training his voice so it's like he's trying to do the same thing he would've done as a kid

Do you know why some people would like a particular voice and others would dislike it? Is it just their exposure/experiences? I watched Patti Lupones ‘Ladies who lunch’ and thought it was amazing but I was shocked to see that people said they didn’t like the sound of her voice in the comments. Now with Jacobs voice I know he’s talented and people love him but his voice to me it doesn’t sound good to my ears. Is their a science behind this or just peoples personal taste?
It's just taste. I respect Jacob, but his tone doesn't do it for me either. While I was reviewing Rachelle Ferrell, someone was saying they didn't like how she was "making faces". Ledisi is probably my favorite singer I've reviewed, but people feel her singing is old fashioned.
Everything is about taste and in some cases that's really great. Take for example my singing! I hate it lol. However, I'm lucky not everyone shares my taste 🤣
My wife once liked my voice, but after living with me she hates it cuz I practice so often.

I dunno man. It may be more musically complex, but it's a little too runny and defocused for me. Sometimes the simplicity of a song is it's power. Adding as many notes and chords as you can think of doesn't make it better.
It's preference. I enjoy the ethereal effect of his harmonic choices. I've heard this song so many times that I find this rendition refreshing.

I hear ya. Though I think Jacob is the most brilliant musician I've ever heard, I would prefer a bit more of the basic melody. But Jacob is still me hero.
