That descending was actually not chromatic, its microtonal
Felipe García Jacob said in an interview once that when he’s singing riffs like that, he generally thinks about it as “aiming” at a desired note and dividing the intervals into whatever number he chooses. I noticed he works in fives and sevens a lot.

@@NyaCrea there is an awesome video on his insta (probably also on youtube) where he first sings a minor third in semitones and then goes on with splitting the interval in more and more equally spaced parts! He is not just hearing absolute but also kind of microtonal haha... just a genius

Nice reaction. Scary part is that this is just Jacob making stuff up on the spot as he only knew a few of the words to start. Wait till you check out the stuff he's done where he actually plans it out or collabs with others. He's famous as a composer/arranger and musician. For a start with his music, check out his videos like the Flintstones, You and I, All Night Long and Moonriver all which he won Grammys (yes that would be 4 of them). He newest release is a song All I Need with Mahalia and Ty Dolla $ign that is excellent.

I love that you talk about his voice and singing. Since he's a musical genius when it comes to arranging and playing and composing, that's naturally the focus. But I love his voice and I think he's gotten better than he used to. 😄💖🙏 My recommendations: Moon River, It Don't Matter, Hajanga, With the love in my heart, You are all I need, Down the Line...
Why? It is normal for him to compose music when he has already played so many instruments for so long. I do not detract from it, but there are many people who compose and from memory. What happens is that he has used harmonization and other technical concepts to the fullest extent. I don't know why you call him a genius.
I really enjoyed your comments, very nice, very sincere. I know other people have suggested "All Night Long" but it truly is epic. It also has the benefit of including Take 6 in the vocals-really sweet. Jacob arranged and produced as well as performed the whole thing. He even includes the Aeolians of Oakwood University Choir towards the end. This is just a massive effort which too won a Grammy.
He is a musical genius.

He does sing “out of tune” but it’s not really out of tunes, it’s micro tones
Positive Thoughts I think his version of in my room is better than the original, but the others I agree the originals are better - especially here comes the sun. He turned into a bouncy hipster number with flipping key changes all over it :( the he won’t hold you one he released recently is absolutely gorgeous though.

Yes please react to this man all that you can he is a blessing. When it comes to vocals I recommend you check out some of his acapella arrangements. He’s done songs like the flinstones theme and pure imagination. If you’re more interested in his discography some of my favorites of his are “savior” , “with the love in my heart” and “hideaway”. Great video! Looking forward to more. :)))

Boy are you for a Ride... the most talented man on the planet, I know it sounds crazy, but you will understand this statement in time.
Jacob Collier is Human 2.0 level talent. Seems to me he did quite well with his father being absent. The love between Jacob (Moriarty?)/Collier and his mother is simply breathtaking - right down to the plates of fruit and the hot tea she brings to him as he's working. There's a video here on UA-cam of him doing a donation drive for his band members who were struggling during the worst of COVID-19. I think you can find it by simply searching for 'IHarmU' -- where the 'harm' stands for 'harmonize'. That video alone is over 8 hours long, as I recall. And he also has other videos where he shows how he created a few other of his popular songs/arrangements, using the same Macintosh program Logic Pro. I was simply stunned at his skills while watching those. He has an expert-level understanding of so many different and intersecting things. Perfect pitch. Amazing rhythms. Insanely good piano skills, and decent at playing most other non-wind instruments. And he's a very energetic entertainer as well.

I totally understand. It is literally all over the place. I try to imagine what a meal would look and taste like cooked by Jacob! But for many of us the confluence of many music styles and his ability to explore harmonies in instinctive and unique ways is revelatory.

Love this song but there is one thing that has always baffled me they are singing about King David seeing Bathsheba but it was Samson who got his hair cut off not David. Kind of sums up some of collier’s stuff to me - undoubtably clever, but all the runs and microtones etc all over the place take a lot out of the simple beauty out of the song.
Ya know, I was lookin through this comment section for someone to have said this. I think Hallelujah is one song where the melody needs no more embellishments than written. Leonard Cohen is such a legend of songwriting! :)

Did he do (as an artist) what he genuinely felt [and heard] in the moment. I think he did.
Also did he serve the work well? For me...he did.
Listening to this reminds of other musicians engaging with "sacred" works. There are no sacred cows in music. That said...one better be able to serve the music well.

Sinatra, Armstrong influences. Are you having a laugh? Try Benjamin Britten, Stravinsky, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Sting, JS Bach to name but a few. He is influenced by all different styles, but his foundation is in classical music and it’s extension to Jazz Music. Definitely not a crooner.
Mark Ellicott the way he sings sometimes is undoubtably influenced by crooners on some level imho

You say that Collier is a genius but why exactly?
For me is a composer like a lot of people.
The difference is that he has a lot of knowledge because he has studied a lot and wants to put everything together, in everything he does, in a way, in my opinion a bit pretentious. He is a technician and connoisseur of musical theory, but he is not an innovator or artist like Freddie Mercury, MJ, or many other people who with little musical knowledge made great songs. This boy is simply the result of his obsession and effort. But I still don't understand why you call him a genius.
