What a beautiful interpretation of Jacobs cover of Fix You. When I first watched his original video of Fix You , I was mesmerized and found myself returning throughout the days that followed humming life will fix you. And now I’ve learned how his choices of key change, shifts, and voice inflections made his performance so touching. Thank you for your celebration of Jason’s talent all while doing what he loves. I am imagining that listeners worldwide will give themselves permission to reach outside the norm and create with abandon .
Your analysis of Jacob is spot-on. I'm glad that you recognized the genius of that last, unexpected key change centered around that common note. Does a key change like that have a name in the world of music theory?
I must say thank you for knowledge of and respect for Jacob's interpretation of Fix You. It is a lovely song when sung by Chris Martin and Coldplay. Your comparison of Jacob's interpretation to the Impressionists and to Debussy gave me a whole new way of appreciating his music. I love listening to so much of his work. I watched his video of Moon River the first time. Ever since I have closed my eyes and when I do Jacob takes me on a wander among the planets. Where next, I wonder?
That was just a lovely interaction with this rendition. Beautiful comments informed by love and knowledge. Jacob's take of "Fix You" is a masterpiece and your reaction was a heartfelt homage. Thanks for this.
Jacob Collier, the genius of our time. It fascinates, amazes and delights with its musicality and revealing, even revolutionary definition of sound. The best of the best.
It’s very special. Since starting my YT channel it’s as though my whole world has opened up. I haven’t listen to Puccini or Schubert in a long time. But for some reason, I’ve developed a passion for Bach!
What amazes me when listening to JC's music, is how far away he can go from the original and yet always find his way back .. his ability to harmonise is top of the world ! Greatings from an old Danish Dear and Angel 🌷🇩🇰❤️
Thank you! I’ve heard many reviews of this song and I’ve never heard it put quite the way did. I really enjoyed the connection to Debussy and the impressionists.
Jacob's voice is a gift from heaven. Your intricate analysis of his singing as "painting" perfectly captures my journey through his musical universe I've discovered only recently. It is a rich and complex tapestry that seems to grow infinitely, beyond borders.
So true. Very much about colours and nuances. His ear is so highly developed and his understanding of harmonies is in a different universe to us mortals !!!
Brilliant analysis. Impressionist painting, indeed. Well done, coach. If you're interested in hearing his chops to score orchestrally, give a listen to his cover collaboration of the beloved Portuguese song "Lua".
Really great reaction/analysis! When Jacob went through these changes your facial expression must have matched mine when I first heard them. What a journey to go on... and when you know Jacob, you know the destination of that journey will be a beautiful one!
5:38 - when you compared Jacob's music to Monet or Cezanne, it reminded me of the movie "Round Midnight". Have you seen it? There's a scene where the main character Dale Turner, a jazz saxophonist (played by Dexter Gordon), is looking through a book of Monet paintings and his friend asks him if he likes Monet and he replies something like "Oh, yes. All the colors...he sounds like Ravel or Tadd Dameron. It's like bebop." (And, if you haven't seen it, there's another part where Dale talks about his influences. ua-cam.com/video/0esLQMgVFzM/v-deo.html "The swing bands used to be all...Straight tonics, seventh chords. And then, with the Basie band...I heard Lester Young...and he sounded like he came out of the blue. Because he was playing all the color tones...The sixths and the ninths...And major sevenths. You know, like Debussy and Ravel. Then Charlie Parker came on...And he began to expand and...He went into elevenths and thirteenths...And flat fives. Luckily, I was going...In the same direction already. You just don't go out...And pick a style off a tree one day. The tree is inside you growing naturally.")
Have you heard JC cover “Just the Way You are”? Jacob is a once in a generation (if not once in a century) talent… as a musician myself, I sometimes find it frightening exactly how talented he is, particularly at such a young age. By the way, if you haven’t listened to another of Quincy Jones’ discoveries, Dirty Loops… I’d recommend “Breakdown” for starters.
I'm sure.you're aware he won the gold.medal grade 8 abrsm singing. He sat under his.mum's piano when she gave violin lessons as a child and hears music as colours. There are 2 special qualities to Collier's work: he always takes you on a harmormonic journey and brings you home and it's always the road less travelled. Sometimes he overdoes it. Personally I want him to put pop to one side and to create modern classical music (he was very taken by Benjamin Britten having been in The Turn of the Screw). Whatever he does, we are blessed to have talent like this in the world.
Really, really insightful. Subscribed. Chris Thile, Laysongs or Dionysis perhaps? Or for fun one of his collabs with Jacob at the Blue Note NYC, Drive my Car or Don't Think Twice.
Love love love Jacob Collier. I had the great opprotunity to hear him live in Stockholm July 16, 2022. He did a wonderful version of Dancing Queen by ABBA. It is amazing to be conducted by Jacob 😊. If you haven't watched the clip when Chris Martin tells Jacob about the film Amadeus you simply must. ua-cam.com/video/uiYGI0CounQ/v-deo.html Please analyse more of Dimash as well. There are some amazing kazakh songs to enjoy as Karagym-Ai. And I don't think you have done Passione by Krutoy yet either? Greetings from Sweden!
I don't actually like the original version by Coldplay. But I enjoyed Jacob s version, such talented guy.thankyou for your reaction. So many highly evolved musicians.by the way Dimash has a new song out on 22nd March! Love 💛🇬🇧
my brother - good video but you're back-lit. Put the camera behind the light, in this case your window and your face will be lit by the light and your video will look lightyears better. good video
You're so right! I haven't watched this video in a while and it's so badly lit! I was living briefly in that Bangkok flat and was trying - and failing - to catch the view out the window from the 19th floor! Thanks for your advice. Will
What a lovely change, that old upright accentuates the song. Please other VIEWERS, SUBSCRIBE to William and help him to give his time to us. Also do make suggestions for future videos. Will is not a mind reader! See your at the flat at the mo, recognise the balcony for the 'Lockdown Haircut' ! 😉 Take care, thank you
No I don’t have micro perfect pitch but I can usually tell keys. And I’m singers I can always tell the notes. Not quite sure why but probably from so much listening.
Would you like to be introduced to one of the great great voices of our time? Have a look (hear) at Nightwish, Ghost Love Score live in Wacken, 2013. Floor Jansen, the singer of Nightwish is such a versatile singer. But be prepared! One, you would go into a genre which is called symphonic metal and two, you would summon the Nightwish army in your comment section... but that's a good thing!
Thank you for celebrating all the beautiful talents of Jacob. Your respect for his interpretation of “ Fix You” is humbling.

I do love Jacob and how he uses sounds as colours. Thanks so much for your comment. 🙏

Excellent analysis - loved the comparison with the impressionists. Hadn't thought of him in that way but it's so true.
You also have an extraordinary way of painting with words. Very good ears as well! Excellent video!
Painting music .. so well put!

Hard not to get swept along by Jacob as he moves through different keys! Always taking us by surprise. 🎶
Love, love, love.
Exactly
Really interesting analysis! Thank you

Hola! Gracias por tus comentarios.. en Argentina amamos a Jacob Collier, estuvo por aquí hace unos años. Saludos desde la ciudad de Buenos Aires.
His music still later on went into a big studio
Beautiful voice.
tus comentarios sobre lo que está tocando Jacob describen a la perfección lo que se siente, gracias por transcribirlos tan bien 👍

wonderful analyzation. Love your reactions to Collier and Dimash. 2 of the most amazing musicians on earth today.
Thanks Roy. Much appreciated. They are both stunningly talented - and so different!
Lol comparing birds and tables
