There's a sense, in music, of "coming home" that composers usually try to attain as much as possible. Bach did it beautifully. He goes through all kinds of key changes to achieve that sense of coming home at the end of a piece. Jacob does more moving around than Bach ever dreamed of which means the sense of coming home at the end is almost overwhelming.

Hey there! Indeed John, Ryan is right: you should also check what Jacob does with buddies in the pop field. And "Time Alone With You" w/ the great Daniel Cesar is the perfect exemple. Then, if interested, you could check what Daniel did "on his own". Greetings!
I think you’d get a kick out of Jacob’s live BBC Proms rendition of his own composition ‘In the Real Early Morning’ with the Metropole Orkest. Single voice, celesta and a lovely orchestral arrangement.
I don't know that I've ever commented on a UA-cam video but I love watching your reactions of his music. You truly are an intelligent vocalist and your insights on frequency were profound on this. But more than that, I love listening to reactions of Jacob Collier because it feels like I'm sharing in an unforgettable experience with someone. The music is so deeply raw, it breaks through emotional gaurd rails, it's a unifying and transcendent. Thank you for letting me share these experiences with you.
I think you're exactly right John (around 13:52) where you say the song starts to darken... starting with "What can I give him..."... it makes the final "Give my heart" so powerful, it's like it's overcoming the darkness.
Some of my favourites by him include 'Fascinating Rythmn', 'The Christmas Song', 'The Flintstones' and 'In The Real Early Morning'. All of these just blow my mind.
Continue reacting to Jacob, it's such a pleasure to see how other people "digest" his music. I recommend "All night long" and "He won't hold you". Thanks for the attention! Ps: "You and I" as well, the vocals are just from another world, and they are more present than in the other two songs.
Love every one of your Jacob Collier reactions. You immediately recognized his genius, and it has been a joy to watch. I now know who this guy is…and I’m better for it!
I just recently found your channel and you recently found Jacob. I found him in early 2020, and after obsessing over and watching everything I could about him, analyzes, video essays, even his own ted talks and masterclasses. Seeing you react, as someone who understands from your own experiences and not having only been introduced to things I know now through Jacob, makes me giddy. I know it seems disrespectful if I admit I’m giggling madly as you cry listening to Jacob, but hearing your opinion as you, a professional, are blown away by the musical feast that is Jacob’s genius, makes me feel a newfound sense of Wonder and excitement that Jacob’s music always brings me. His music always leaves me with tears in my eyes, goosebumps on my skin, wonder in my heart, and an unparalleled excitement. So thanks for covering him! My favorite piece of his is Hideaway if you want to give another well harmonized masterpiece a listen. I won’t spoil the tuning system change...
His harmonizing is vaguely reminiscent of the vocal group Take 6, but he takes musical theory and praxis to a whole new level. I have never heard anything else quite like what he is doing. His acoustic work (without electrical instruments) has a different kind of beauty, like his cover of Martin’s Fix You.
I enjoy your reactions so much (honest, musically savvy, I'm right there with you emotionally), that you're the first musical reactor I've been rewatching. I like your comment about his being a level of genius you didn't know existed. Exactly. On top of all his musical prowess, and delicate emotions, the overwhelming emotion that comes through is the pure joy of creating beauty. His live performances (e.g. You've got a friend" are equally amazing for a different reason - not only can he improvise at this level of sophistication, but he's completely connected to the audience and at one point abandons his instrument/singing and just conducts the audience).
you HAVE to listen to In The Real Early Morning by Jacob Collier and the Metropole Orkest (live at BBC proms 2016). One of his best musical moments ever. Composed by Jacob Collier, arranged by Jacob Collier and Jules Buckley (the conductor). You will LOVE it.
I have been obsessed with Jacob’s music for about two years now. Your insight and knowledge has given me an appreciation for this music I never would have had. Thank you so much.
Really appreciate the vocal insights you give to these. You did in fact correctly identify the quarter tone modulation. David Bruce made a great video on how he manages to make it sound smooth. It's amazingly clever. The only thing I dislike about Bruce's video is his doubt that it serves an expressive purpose rather than technical.
btw, Moon River also has some microtonal shenanigans. You can see where they are in June Lee's transcription. Also John, if you're considering more reactions to Collier, I'd recommend the performance of "Hideaway" for the Paste Magazine channel where he arranges his song for 6 vocalist/instrumentalists (including himself) doing double duty.
I would have thought the microtonal shifts were a party trick, but they are a revelation. When I heard Moon River I did not realize there were the shifts, I just kept thinking WTF am I hearing?! He understands vibration and human perception in ways that are revolutionary.
Once again, FABULOUS video! And I'm a bit torn because I want you to hear ALL of Jacob's incredible music but I also want you to film all of your reactions as you hear each piece for the first time. There's no getting around it - I'm afraid you're just going to have to do nothing but react to Jacob Collier videos from now on! LOL.
You sir have a very sharp sense of hearing, great analysis overall, most of these microtonal changes really went past me at first, I had to read on it to understand what was going on musically. Impressive stuff considering he was maybe 17 years old at the time, mind-blowing stuff really.
That moment starting at around 10:26! Here's a short clip of Jacob talking about modulating to "G half sharp" in the song (and why he wanted to do it): ua-cam.com/video/HUGoUHKAGAE/v-deo.html He shows how a piano is IN TUNE with the song one minute and then magically OUT OF TUNE the next.
I think I saw in an interview with Jacob that he started this song in A-428 when it was the "bleak midwinter", but in the later stages when the "sun comes out" he has modulated to A 440, so the key is still relatively the same, but it's tangibly brighter
It's crazy to think about how technology has enabled people like Jacob Collier to make perfect choirs by singing in sync with themselves. And by looping you can even do stuff like this live. It's magical.
Good suggestion! I was worried it wouldn't be unique, but the way he plays with microtones AND time signature in Hideaway would make it a great sequel to this one.
I am a musician myself and it's wonderful to see you react to Jacob Collier. Jacob is so amazing, I've never heard music like his. He is a pioneer in this new kind of sound, never hear before and so magnifique! Harmonies like we've never heard since the beginning of music. Makes me cry too...
My recommendations are Hallelujah and Home is. I love your reactions to Jacob, cause you appreciate the music on an another level than other people and you can actually explain what he’s doing. I hope you keep on watching Jacob and doing videos of your reactions!
I thought you were going to keep it together on this one but the kid got you in the end, Music and voices that get you emotional like that is a beautiful thing.
You really have the best and honest reactions to Jacob's other-worldly music. I wish I can have those first time hearing experiences again you have. Don't forget you are not the only one who cried after listening to his songs. 😉This kid is really on another level of genius. Thanks so much for your reactions and hopefully we see more of this.
It's so wholesome how you can smile at something he did and I can see that and be like dude I smiled at that EXACT moment when I heard that.. Jacob has a way with emotions.
About the microtonal shift (as explained by Jacob himself in a master class you can find here on YT): What Jacob is doing is he's exploiting the differences between just intonation and equal temperament to smooth out that quarter-tone modulation. Each of the four chords in the transition is in just intonation, and shifts the key up by a few cents relative to the equal-tempered note, until you reach 50 cents for the landing chord.
Sorry if this is old news I know it’s a 2 year old video, but I wanted to clarify the microtonal key change a bit because I know you’ll appreciate it if you haven’t heard the details yet!! The way he does it has more to do with the reason we use “equal” temperament vs “just.” As I’m sure you already know, we use equal temperament as a compromise, trading in-tune chords for the ability to have all keys and chords intervalically equivalent. When Jacob modulates to G half sharp, he does it by climbing a ladder of 4 chords that are sung *more* in tune than our usual equally-tempered notes. He does it entirely with his voice, no tape speed change involved! Thanks for your insightful and enjoyable reaction, friend!
Your reactions are so genuine, I cannot appreciate it enough! I really hope it's not overkill, but I do hope you react to Jacob's "Make Me Cry" (Mahogany Session), one of the most beautiful performances he's ever done
I absolutely love your reactions!!! They are so honest and emotional, so I want to share my personal favorite renditions of him, namely Hallelujah (the version from a Stream) and in the real early morning, together with the metropole orchest at the bbc proms!!! I HIGHLY recommend checking these out!! Keep it up!
I rewatch your reactions from time to time because of the wisdom and emotional honesty of them. They too are things of beauty. It would be lovely to hear you react to another Jacob video. I would recommend his take on the "Flintstones." This amazing rendition probably won't have tears in your eyes but it will definitely put a huge smile on your face. It is quite a marvel in it's own right. Thanks.
Your reaction videos to Jacob Collier are probably the best there is on UA-cam. I found myself watering eyes while watching a guy watering eyes while listening Jacob's music. 😊
Truly enjoyed watching this, as it mirrors my feelings so much. I was in the process of being moved to tears there at the end, too, before I realized that was happening to you. It was clear you were "in it" and not wanting to or able to stop it and try to comment. That for me was the perfectly appropriate reaction, just being stunned and appreciative that a human can create such exquisite beauty. What a gift for us all, and I truly appreciate your beautiful response. Blessings onward.
Thank you so much for your wonderful accompaniment to JC’s music. You manage to combine energy, enthusiasm and illumination without missing the all important emotion that is surely what all great Music seeks to convey. Jacob’s music can be, as you say, “soul stirring”, really overwhelming and joyous - all at once! Love your work sir and thank you!
So wonderful to turn on my computer and see another reaction of yours to Jacob. Your reactions are just things of honest, informed beauty. I am not a particularly knowledgable listener but I am a sincere and devoted one. Hearing your reactions to Jacob I get to share in both your knowledge and your emotional honesty. I've had the benefit now of listening to Jacob for maybe three years with my ears. I really appreciate getting to hear and share his music through yours. Thank you so much.
He's got you three for three! Onto the next one...!? I come back to these every now and again, your reactions to the beauty that you find warm my heart. 😄
as someone whose watched Jacob from his teenage years to who he’s becoming in his adulthood. he is truly beyond his age and the time of the world we live in at just 26 his talent absolutely profound. i’d suggest either his tiny desk or his single “Hideaway” from his first album. just be prepared for more tears.
One of my closest friends of 65 years, Jim Keltner, studied with Freddie Gruber when we were teenagers-in the early ‘60s! Freddie sold me my first set of vibes at Barry Grasmueck’s (?) music store in Pasadena, CA! I remained a vibist, studying with Bobby Hutcherson for a year, and performing on vibes just a couple of years till I heard Bill Evans on “Kind Of Blue”! From then on I have been a jazz pianist-composer! Keltner and I are still close friends-both musically and personally...
I showed up for my lesson at Freddie’s to find Jim Keltner and Mitch Mitchell sitting in the drum room, Freddie had me go through my lesson for both of them. We all ended up at Roger Linn’s house, the Linn drum machine had just come out. Pretty amazing night for me at 19!
John, we must be near the same age then! I turned 80 on 10-10-2022. I rank Jim as a studio drummer in the top 5 if not overall number 1. (And You DO know Jim is the drummer on “Josie” on Steely Dan’s Aja album, right? Keltner has been on over 150 Gold albums and at least 75 Platinum! I was upstairs in his home studio after dinner and a lot of those presentation albums were on the walls! Jim has never considered himself a “jazz” drummer, but he HAS done jazz recordings-the last of which was with Brad Meldhau, so-as I’ve always believed-he’s always been a jazz drummer, but he’s made his living in commercial and pop studio work.
you should look at his grammy-winning arrangement of the "Flintstones." it's not as emotional as the ones youve seen already but i think it is a fun thing to listen to
It's utterly baffling when you hear/experience something you do/don't understand and can't explain. This is the essence of Jacob Collier's musical genius. I'm with you in every video you do reviewing Jacob's songs.
Mind blowing. I have always loved the plaintive nature of In the bleak midwinter but Jacob stretches and morphs sound, incredulity and soul as the reinvents this beautiful classic. On top of this we have the pleasure of your learned analysis as well as your ecstasy and incredulity whilst listening to genius unfolding in sound. I thank you for your humility, great explanations of some of the techniques he is using to bush the boundaries. Possibly my favourite video of this year.(& I have watched some great stuff! ) 👌🙏😊
Your reviews are filled with so much passion and insight that it’s really changing how I think about vocals. I will absolutely be tuning into to the podcast. Thank you for the inspiration and advice :)
Welcome to the club, John. JC seems to have an extraordinary sense of the emotional power of every aspect of music. And he is already a master of translating it. To be that realized AND that young is both inspirational and maddening. I never know if I'm tearing up because of the beauty of what he's done, or knowing that I'll never get anywhere close.
Fantastic analysis! One other astonishing aspect of this song happens between 8:37 and 8:54 where he seamlessly modulates to the key of G-half-sharp in the last chord, singing the next few lines 50 cents 'out of tune'. He somehow brings out the fabulous brightness of that microtonal shift while making it look effortless.
Got him again lol. John I love your content... However I love when you react to Jacob's songs the most because I like seeing you get overwhelmed to the point of tears...
Thank you for your honest response… he hits us all like you expressed - genius musicality is an awesome, powerful and moving experience… never apologize for sinking into its embrace!
Freddie Gruber was a salesman and teacher at Barry And Grassmueck Music Store in Pasadena CA and worked with one of my closest friends of 60 years the great drummer, Jim Keltner. Freddie sold me my first vibraphone!
Awesome reaction! Your speechlessness speaks for us all... (and ABBA's engineer did that same time/shifting recording technique as well. Those girls could could sing their asses off to begin with but the records take on that magical quality with the layered vocal overdubs all done that way)
Yep; genius...no other word for it. I love these vocal multitracked pieces of Jacob's. They reveal such extraordinary harmonic understanding. I love how his music is so joyful. I find I can't help grinning whilst listening (or sometimes sobbing!) I also love 'All Night Long' and 'Here comes the Sun' where his harmonic ability meets amazing instrumental 'chops'. Check it out if you haven't heard it already. Thanks for your reaction. I enjoyed seeing another musician moved to tears!
i love these reactions!! you should listen to "Close to You" the Flintstones cover is great too, as well as "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" and i also reccommend his All Night Long cover !!!
I heard this piece for the first time 2 years ago and was very touched by the harmonies. The ending is overwhelming. When I was a child, I heard an unknown organist improvise with dreamlike beautiful harmonies. Since then I try to regain this wonderful feeling and look for wonderful harmonies in pieces. Bruckner, Mahler, Delius to Jazz etc. are a finding place for it. Jakob Collier manages to take me to another world through these complex harmonies. Thanks so much for your wonderful reaction video! 🥰🎶🍀

I see that he got you again... you are not alone mate
Oh man he has so much variety in his music. Check out "time alone with you"
Hey there! Indeed John, Ryan is right: you should also check what Jacob does with buddies in the pop field. And "Time Alone With You" w/ the great Daniel Cesar is the perfect exemple. Then, if interested, you could check what Daniel did "on his own".
Greetings!
Time alone is hilarious. He throws the kitchen sink at it. He didnt do all the vocal runs on that track
Sub’d just because you’re willing to be vulnerable and because you feel the music so deeply.
I was getting emotional with you. It is amazing how Jacob can do this to so many!! He is great!!
Yes David Bruce's video is excellent! ua-cam.com/video/Xd54l8gfi7M/v-deo.html
I would have thought the microtonal shifts were a party trick, but they are a revelation. When I heard Moon River I did not realize there were the shifts, I just kept thinking WTF am I hearing?! He understands vibration and human perception in ways that are revolutionary.
My 3rd cry too...he is an angel.
LOL.
Ha! My channel is just going to be videos of me crying.

You sir have a very sharp sense of hearing, great analysis overall, most of these microtonal changes really went past me at first, I had to read on it to understand what was going on musically. Impressive stuff considering he was maybe 17 years old at the time, mind-blowing stuff really.
Actually Jacob was 22 years old when hid did this... but you're also right, he did incredible things already when he was 17!
That moment starting at around 10:26! Here's a short clip of Jacob talking about modulating to "G half sharp" in the song (and why he wanted to do it): ua-cam.com/video/HUGoUHKAGAE/v-deo.html
He shows how a piano is IN TUNE with the song one minute and then magically OUT OF TUNE the next.
I would absolutely love an in-depth conversation about jacobs genius style of music between John and Jacob. That would be amazing!!
I think I saw in an interview with Jacob that he started this song in A-428 when it was the "bleak midwinter", but in the later stages when the "sun comes out" he has modulated to A 440, so the key is still relatively the same, but it's tangibly brighter
That's insane! How the hell does he manage to do that?
Oh I remember him using this technique for his song Hideaway :))
Some jazz teacher told me about music once, you can hear it, feel it, see it or know it. Jacob knows it.
It's crazy to think about how technology has enabled people like Jacob Collier to make perfect choirs by singing in sync with themselves. And by looping you can even do stuff like this live. It's magical.
And he can play like a million instruments, too. Of course I exaggerate but he is truly a spectacular person.
Those casual Drum teacher named drops 🤯🤯😂
Please react to Jacob Collier's Hideaway!!!
bump! my favourite jacob collier song
+1 to this!!!
Good suggestion! I was worried it wouldn't be unique, but the way he plays with microtones AND time signature in Hideaway would make it a great sequel to this one.
I'd recommend Jacob's performance of "Hideaway" on Paste Studio NYC. I go back to that video over and over again and it's goosebumps always.
IM SO GLAD YOU'RE REVIEWING THIS, SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SONG
I am a musician myself and it's wonderful to see you react to Jacob Collier. Jacob is so amazing, I've never heard music like his. He is a pioneer in this new kind of sound, never hear before and so magnifique! Harmonies like we've never heard since the beginning of music. Makes me cry too...
As a long time Jacob fan, it's truly beautiful rediscovering his music through your eyes. Thank you.
I'd like to add to my previous comment that I enjoy this performance of Jacob's more, having seen your video and the analysis you provided. Thank you!
“Soul stirring”... that’s an major understatement!
It's so wholesome how you can smile at something he did and I can see that and be like dude I smiled at that EXACT moment when I heard that.. Jacob has a way with emotions.
Collier is PERFECTION.
Thanks.
I didn't know about the hierarchy of vowel sounds. Kind of neat to have an analogy with the visible spectrum and wavelength.
I also cried when I heard it. Like a dark maze towards light and sacrifice. He's a virtuoso.
Cheers from Brasil
Lol keep doing collier reactions, I can't get enough of watching these!
Thank you so much for your wonderful accompaniment to JC’s music. You manage to combine energy, enthusiasm and illumination without missing the all important emotion that is surely what all great
Music seeks to convey. Jacob’s music can be, as you say, “soul stirring”, really overwhelming and joyous - all at once! Love your work sir and thank you!
Moon River brought me to tears as well.... Simply Angelical.
Your Jacob reactions are probably my favorite thing on the internet!
I was also moved to tears by the emotion of the performance. Thanks Jacob
Your reaction talent is on par with Jacob's musical skills.
Maybe react to "Home Is"? It's an amazing composition
YES! VOCES8 DID AN INCREDIBLE JOB!!
Thank you so much.
a really fantastic song of his I think you'd love is fascinating rythm, I think we can all agree it's outrageously amazing
He has that effect on me too. A genius beyond words to describe it.
Ay man, his bbc performance of in the real early morning. Gives you meaning in life
One of my closest friends of 65 years, Jim Keltner, studied with Freddie Gruber when we were teenagers-in the early ‘60s!
Thank you very much for your reaction it is good to see I am not the only one affected so profoundly by the sound waves Jacob creates.
you should look at his grammy-winning arrangement of the "Flintstones." it's not as emotional as the ones youve seen already but i think it is a fun thing to listen to
Love your heart, John. 😊
It's utterly baffling when you hear/experience something you do/don't understand and can't explain. This is the essence of Jacob Collier's musical genius. I'm with you in every video you do reviewing Jacob's songs.
Jacob's singing truly requires full range dynamic speakers to perceive to the fullest every harmony his genius is creating.
Your reaction to Jacob's music really are the best on UA-cam. How wonderful to see someone who's truly touched by his work!
Thank you for the inspiration and advice :)
magical innit
Welcome to the club, John. JC seems to have an extraordinary sense of the emotional power of every aspect of music. And he is already a master of translating it. To be that realized AND that young is both inspirational and maddening. I never know if I'm tearing up because of the beauty of what he's done, or knowing that I'll never get anywhere close.
Mooooore Jacob Collier!
There might have been one or two or twenty microtonal key changes on Moon Rover aswell :)
I find I can't help grinning whilst listening (or sometimes sobbing!)
I also love 'All Night Long' and 'Here comes the Sun' where his harmonic ability meets amazing instrumental 'chops'. Check it out if you haven't heard it already.
Thanks for your reaction. I enjoyed seeing another musician moved to tears!
He’s using a keyboard and vocoder to get the bell tones and the portamento-type bends. So cool. Wish I had 1/100th of 1% of his musical knowledge.
i love these reactions!!
you should listen to "Close to You"
the Flintstones cover is great too, as well as "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing"
and i also reccommend his All Night Long cover !!!
