I've listened to this over and over. Eric and John's solos are both awesome. Cool the see the inspiration Eric gave John and the two legends on stage together.
@@bradwoods371 LOL...kinda the digital vs analog debate. LOL....He's amazing whatever axe you put in his hands. He literally just thinks out loud on a guitar. It blows my mind.
He seen Eric be real light on his solo and decided to follow with that! Both are way better than this but cool to see em lay back some! Just my take on it tho
I applaud John Mayer's humble choice of performance, playing and even clothes here. It is spot on. It says - I identify and look up to Clapton but will not and cannot upstage him in any way. Even where he is standing in relation to Clapton says so much.
Kaan Ölçüşenler because the man has a song writing talent and even if you don’t accept that doesn’t change the fact that’s he the top artist right now.
Anyone know why JM isn't currently in the lineup for Crossroads in September? He is usually in attendance and I thought those dates were open dates on his tour.
Austin Curtis how often have you seen the concert Crossroads or Clapton? Doyle’s been there for many yrs and is a co-writer for many yrs. it’s hard not to notice a left handed guitarist/ singer I know. 😢
John has played long enough and has done enough bro that I think sometimes he just goes “yk what, I’m just gonna take it easy, chill and enjoy the moment” the guy is an extraordinary guitarist. One day you see him playing like this and the next day you see him playing “all along the watchtower” with extreme power ,he does whatever he wants with the guitar ,that’s why he’s different than most guitarists ,and better in my opinion
This isn’t about “taking it easy” or “holding back”. He was absolutely serving the song, which frankly takes a lot of talent and musical maturity. This is what a real pro does.
I felt the same way about when he played "Layla" with Clapton. I think he has so much respect for Clapton that he doesn't want to seem like he's trying to show him up so he overcompensates and plays less notes than he probably wants to. Either way, I love it! 🤘
Totally Great and Talented Men!! and the Ladies also... Never gets old. Just Better with time!! Would Love to see Ed Sheeran up there some day. ❤🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Mark Edwards what? His amp sounds fine. You must be a beginner who knows nothing. You make zero sense. When you’re up there playing guitar for decades get back to us.
@@robertwellington2616 You must not have been around in the 1970s when this song came out! Oh well. The point is, you play the riff on a piano, it is gonna suck.
@@robertwellington2616 I didn't say his amp sounds bad. What I'm saying is, that Clapton wrote the original riff to take advantage of what rock guitar amps do. The amp controls should be set just below the point of break-up. On the main rhythm riff you hit the two strings relatively hard on the final note to take the amp over the edge and into slight break up. That is what makes the riff work. As the chord dies, the sound returns from broken up to clean, generating sustain. That's what makes it sound cool. The riff won't work on a piano because piano notes are not hooked to an amp set to distort them (Unless you hit the piano with a sledge hammer instead of your fingers, that is). If you want to be insulting, go ahead, get it all out of your system.
I think the fact that it was probably dropped on his lap right before, playing with the dead lately, the weird swing tempo and the fact that you dont want to steal too much shine all added up. Mayer is an absolute beast but this solo was underwhelming.
kaypee1972 thanks man, yeah I just read that he’s doing a world tour starting in Japan, I can’t believe I didn’t hear about it he hasn’t come to my city Melbourne since 1990 so I’m getting tickets now 🤘🤘
Clapton doesn’t give a shit about his audience. They way he walks on, turns his back and continues having a chat with his band member is disrespectful to the audience who’ve paid to see him.

He’s older now and probably can’t hear the cues etc. he’s never been rude to his audience but keep making things up about him. Here he is in 1997. We do age and get old you will and so will everyone. Man, love how John really stays true to the groove of the song but adds his own flair.
Brian Keegan he stayed humble knowing that he could’ve gone insane😂
Eric Clapton invites John Mayer onstage to do some cocaine! Unreal! Two legends!
Don't forget the true legend JJ Cale
clayrad1 r/whoooosh
@@luciogaspar4064 shut up
There is a third legend on stage playing guitar, Doyle Bramhall II
You mean 1 legend and a guest
2019
It is about time to make a Clapton/Mayer studio or live album! All original songs!
PLEASE!
That would be Amazing!!
It's 2021! It's time!
Mayer is on 3 tracks from Claptons jj cale tribute album, check it out
4:24 , the signal from the BOSS !!
And John acknowledges

John shows high respect towards Eric. Then again...who wouldn't. That guy is a legend of different level.
very god point JUDE SCOTT !!!! John was playing very respectfully... if not, he would kill it all, but it was not a goal :)
Nice, PRS updated the headstock on the Silver Sky!
😂😂😂
Haha
Also added a new color! nice.
I think that is Eric guitar he use... The one Eric use in 2015
Lol
Clapton really really loves Mayer, I believe he feels comfortable passing the torch into his hands 🙏 I believe he’s worthy
Both of those guys makes the guitar sound like an extension of their souls.
Jonathan and Sherry Siewert That’s exactly what it should be!!
Oh my God! This is my all-time favourite song. Never thought this could happen!!😍
That was a killer solo by Mayer. Such beautiful phrasing...and such a fat tone.
Yea! I think that was a clapton strat too
E.C., John Mayer, Nathan East and Doyle Bramhall II, that is a string quartet about as good as it gets today.
John back playing Fender 😜😉
I actually prefer him on a Strat. Those Silver Sky are great axes but sound sterile to me.
@@jefflevesque5316 exactly they have unprecedented clarity but they lose some of that natural strat "grit"
He still plays stats at all his shows during several songs. He'll never stop playing his SRV strat and his black one.

John Mayer was so restrained before God! Respect!
this is the only time I'm thankful for someone to film a concert, instead of looking at the concert

yup! agree big time i noticed where he stood as well

Best intro ever 😚😚
John invites Ed Sheehan and John has been invited by Eric.. that's the ranking ? great performance btw :)
Don't think it gets any higher :-)
yeah guitar wise it's Eric>John>Ed. So I would say the ranking is pretty accurate!
Why do we mention Ed's name here?
Kaan Ölçüşenler idk some people like him I guess

Eric Clapton's the king 🙇♂️
Great jam song!
Old and New combined ❤️
That piano solo was sweet.

Have you guys noticed John Mayer looking at Clapton from the word go for the signal at 04:24 sec……
dig the fuzz tones
that clapton mid boost baby
Chris Stainton! Da man.

Well the piano player sure stole that show. IMO
Chris Stainton. Brilliant musician
That is because of the diminished notes. Which are brilliant.

It was a great solo.
I have to say the note choice of his solo from 4:45-4:50 was a bit adventurous. But who knows, maybe he did it on purpose? It sounds really "outside."
This whole song was idk.. rushed and not grooving or something.
