Dan D I have never heard of those guys before, and that's what makes John so good. He can bring killer guitar playing to the mainstream and introduce many people to a whole new range of music. He is how I got into playing guitar. His combination of listenability and skill makes him a powerhouse.
Dan D He's great at blues
Dan D im sorry but saying there is nothing original and good about mayers playing is plain ignorant. He is very fucking good. I can't tell if you dont realize this because you have never picked up a guitar or just because you dont realize what makes a good guitarist.
Dan D
Guthrie govan is no doubt the best but john mayer is john mayer, he's a bluesman with a sprinkle of jazz and later country. Why are you bringing guthrie in this conversation
Dan D dude those guys are killer, but if you say mayer has nothing special, you really dont understand guitar. Neon and stop this train is really hard at guitar, and he play those songs while singing, and yet he is one of the guitarist who makes complex riff sounded so simple, it is so hard to do.
He’s doing it for the all the Boyfriends in the crowd lmao.

Keith Carlock he's amazing
Unsung hero, his playing was stupid tight the whole way
He's not really 'unsung' - in the drumming world he's considered a monster with unfair amounts of talent. Check him out playing with Wayne Krantz 😃👍
I discovered john mayer through the drummer lol. Keith Carlock was one of my top drummers I studied.
all the 13 year old girls there were like WTF is this??
more of them probably thought he wrote the song
Jack O Exactly.. those lily white bubble gum chewing little girls were all looking at each other in absolute shock.. Who's Jimi Hendrix and what's a Voodoo Child..they obviously didn't get it, they only came hoping John would possibly make eye contact with one of them.. OMG.. did you see that he actually looked directly at me..LOL oh well
Jack O "Like, I feel like I've heard this before but whatever I'm sure it's his." Also, notice how only like 10 people cheered when they heard the wah strum intro. If that concert were full of guitar players they would've flipped out the second he turned the wah on.
Clay Hadley Agreed.. That giant Hendrix Wah Wah intro too voodoo child is so legendary and universally recognized.. You might wanna listen to Gugun Blues Shelter/Gugun Power Trio and Davide Panozzo for the Jimi type of guitars. If you wanna have some of the more jazz, you might like Tom Misch and Melanie Faye. Still a lot of _hidden_ talents in the internet.

He's a monster and any REAL musician would understand that. Listen, joe from down the street, the man made money off of pop hits cause he likes to write all types of music. If you even bothered to listen to his other songs you'd probably be impressed. They're good stuff
I tried really hard foe some reason to be an asshole hater but the more of his stuff I saw live, the more I became a fan. I’ve seen Dead and Co four times now and I’m heading back to Boulder this summer to see two more shows. He’ll melt your damn face off!!
Agree!! And Mr. Eric Clapton loves doing covers. He talks about John a lot and likes him. He plays with him, among others, and there's lots of others. So if U think John is a teen idol, U might want to listen to an unprecedented , 3 time, inductee into the RRHoF, a man who's played with everybody , no attitude , living legend/icon , who not only plays and has played with too many greats to mention, is the best guitarist , barr none, of the 20th & 21st century , and hear what he has to say about John . Don't compare anyone to Jimi or SRV, cause their not here. And it doesn't really matter how they would have turned out if they lived, cause they were pretty awesome exactly how they were. With my musicality, before I will ever take a step forward , I dig deeper right where I'm at. If u realize that there r only 12 sounds in all of western music, and you can internalize them (u probably have them stored in ur sub- conscious brain along with so many other songs, melodies, harmonies that go all the way back to when u first heard music, child songs, nursery rhymes , all generes), any exercise u do becomes that much more powerful. Even singing the sounds after playing them ,to get familiar with them, is internalizing ! And u want to internalize them to improvise (friends,2-3 people, jams , open mic) , so if u walk into a setting where's there's jamming happening, and somebody runs up to u and says "ok, here's the key and here's the chord progression ", and u say , "forget all that. Just let me listen for a minute and I'll follow u." U listen and then u play 1 sound and you'll know exactly where your at and the key and the chord progressions. Me ,I do that but I'll improvise . And that's where the fun is and that's what musicality is all about. Music theory is redundant . Play scales isn't improvising . Play some (which all come from the 12 sounds in western music)at 250 bps might impress ur friends, but it'll do nothing for ur improvising . The concept is how slow u can play each sound , then improvise with them and that will give all the info u need to play in any situations . You'll eventually forget about keys, and progressions and you'll always know where ur at, always! If you've ever been on a plane and u walk thru and ur greeted by the flight attendants and then u glance into the cockpit and look at the dashboard , u probably thought,"there's got to be a zillion buttons on there, how's the pilot know what buttons to push!!!!", Cause he knows what they do.........
Meanwhile Clapton admit that he is one of the best guitarist ever
Joe mama
Yep. Neon is my favorite original from him. It’s pop, but it’s just as complex as stuff Clapton. Hendrix, or Vaughn composed.
what a legend. doesn't even change out of his pajamas to go to a show where he shreds like an alien, and changes his amp settings in the middle of the show, still shredding. and all of it was for jimi. my respect is unmeasurable
Anybody whos used a whammy bar will know how much it puts tuning out of whack, it ony makes me appreciate this set that much more. Say what you will about john mayer he sure is one hell of guitarist...
Abhinav Ramesh lmao if you set up your bridge right(not Floyd Rose style) you can totally abuse it without it going out of tune. Hard work but it pays off
All you need are locking tuners
it's not the tuners dude its a variety of other factors as well. for example if the nut sticks to the strings they over stretch and drop tuning
Abhinav Ramesh if u add two more tremolo springs then ur straight
i did that on my 89 telecaster with a bigsby dropped tuning all strings had to switch guitars
Probably one of the best guitarist of my generation. And I will admit I am slowy becoming a fan. Especially after I have seen the many Dead songs he covers.

He plays more like Hendrix than SRV, lots of feedback and wah stuff. Kinda cool to hear Stevie tone with a dash of Jimi.
And a bit of Bieber's stage presence!
Professor Musica With none of your stupidity.
***** Mayer even has an SRV tat on his shoulder.
he plays and sing like a pusy
nivdavid177 you for real gonna say that after seeing this performance?
People love to forget that musicians are people. They have songs they love to hear and love to play. Somehow people who don't like John's version believe they're entitled to decide what he does and doesn't get to play. Okay, so I guess next time you decide you'd like to play some Hendrix in your bedroom by yourself, I should come in and say, "actually, ur not allowed. It doesn't do Hendrix justice and it just sounds bad. Sorry." Like seriously lol. John LOVED SRV and Jimi. Those were influences. He's not covering them to impress people, he's covering them because he fucking loves playing their songs. Stop thinking you're allowed to decide how people express themselves through music.
He did amazing loved this version of voodoo toooo
Amazing. Some 55 years later and this tune is still juicy delicious meat for a competent guitarist to truly express himself. Thank you Jimi and God Bless you Mr. Mayer for honoring our brother Jimi
This song has so much soul, energy and aggression to it, u gotta dig deep to pull it off. I don't think people realise how good John is, he really is a master guitarist.
Drummer plays, using the "traditional" grip. Badass!
It's easy to hate him! But after seeing this performance I'm sold, what a guitar player!
When Mayer was on the Rolling Stone cover years ago with Trucks and Frusciante, I laughed to myself. Now I begrudgingly accept that Mr. Wonderland is a tremendously gifted guitar player and totally deserved to be on that cover.

This song has always been amazing to watch people play live.
