Playing Gangland: A Mafia Melting Pot
Вставка

- Gangland Trouble in Paradise, a 2004 PC strategy game that I somehow came to own. Paradise is a city where mafia's come from the world over, sharing techniques and combat styles to develop the ultimate made man. Mario Mangano doesn't pick up on this actually kinda interesting aspect of the city that I just made up and is instead here for a revenge plot.
I experimented with a new audio set up and only after doing all the audio figured out better settings, you can tell what is re-recorded cause it sounds way better.
"You can't miss if your gun is touching the fucker!"
Tell that to XCOM troops.
Y'know, that last panel really sums up this game best. Mario doesn't even stop to celebrate his victory or mourn his family's many deaths, as he already hears gunshots of probably 12 more families that have already re-spawned and he has to go to shoot down.
Honestly I feel sorry for the guy, with the big reveal in Escape from Paradise City that he is in fact fighting immortal vampires, it means he is trapped in an endless cycle of combat of which he may never be able to escape, if he is a vampire himself and thus immortal.
Considering Mario never aged a day even after all three of his kids turned into fully grown adults, I think he might have secretly been a lich like El Lobo.
Hey! Now I get how El Lobo was showing up again and again. He just kept reloading the save until he got beaten enough times to rage quit.
@@jor4114 that... makes way to much sense... and for that reason it could not have be intentional
In the grim darkness of 1940, there is only war.
Ok so it was THIS one where the "The Docks" came from. That's been driving me crazy not knowing the origin of that gag
The fact that the game will take away your guns and money, but leave you two dead kids cluttering up your UI, is truly a powerful statement on the tragic nature of crime and violence.
Or this game is just fucking nuts. Major props for getting through this one.
A fun bit of trivia: The "Dino Christian Patti" credited as a programmer on the 1:00:00 timestamp later went on to co-found the studio Playdead and was the Game Director of indie hit Limbo and Executive Producer of Inside. Really goes to show how everybody has to start somewhere.
Well we know where "limbo" got its name from now, fukin mafia murdering purgatory.
@@Snowissnowier Do you are have the stupid?
@@Snowissnowier work smart, not hard, eh?
@@Snowissnowier I don't think so, it's pretty clear both of those games took a lot of effort to make from a pacing and flow standpoint. I would imagine Inside in particular took a hell of a lot of effort to get to work as well as it does from the perspective of animation. The "cinematography" of those games was also a big deal and I'd imagine it took a while for them to nail that down for both games.

16:37 The beginning of one of my favorite running jokes on this channel
I swear every game based around crime is absolutely mental. In this game you wage 150 years war for a stupid revenge plot which also has you kill at least 50 additional mafia families in the endless cycle of violence which even the game ends on as you run into the distance for another fire fight to inevitably kill more families. The reason nobody drives is because there is nobody but the hundreds of mafias living there. You are the only man who knows how to drive on account of not being born inside of mafia town. Probably the only reason the invisible walls change from level to level is that the piles of smoldering rubble and dead bodies gets cleaned out. The us government has declared the area uninhabitable and won’t consider sending in troops because of the large amounts of citizens with rocket launchers. That’s probably more story than this game could even think of as it just tells you to kill more mafias and families. Just thinking about the implications of a city run off crime where small Chinese children can be tipped 50,000 dollars (presumably to start another mafia) is more interesting than playing the game.
2 things:
A: a synopsis of a game, movie, show,or book will always b more interesting than the product itself. Mainly because expectations r never met.
B: reading the 1 reply to ur long winded comment that only points out u missing a zero in ur tip analysis is probably the epitome of comedy.
Read Peter Mass' Underboss, criminals aren't knowing for preserving a moral code for a long time.
wrong ... Alpha mode had cars, much more content and police cars, taxis, lorries,..etc all just driving around. But the developers had issues implementing it properly so they dumbed everything down.
I can't tell YOU how many TIMES I've watched this VIDEO, sometimes even MULTIPLE times in a DAY. 😦
@Marcin Jechorek
why not?
I WATCH this video at least ONCE a MONTH. It's just that good
Holy shit. I thought this game was just a vague childhood fever-dream of stereotypical awareness. It's real.
"Hello uncle..."
"BRING ME BULLETS" XD
...Urrghhh...my shades are...busted, such sad last words
"Is that my blood..?" Also tragic.
I am going to guess that when they capitalize certain words, it is because they make hand gestures to emphasize their point!
"Alright we finally are the only family left in the city! Time to turn in for the night and get some much needed rest"
*4 hours later*
"Boss during your nap 15 new families have popped up and have taken over all our territory"
"I'll crush his scull boss!"
No, not his skull, the bone which contains his brain and gives shape to his head - his *scull,* because he rows crew competitively, and that will fucking annoy him
P.S. Actually yes, spontaneous emphasis is totally a thing with Italians haha... or at least Italian-Americans
The chancellor of my university does the random capitalisation of words thing whenever he hosts public lectures. Tried as I might, I couldn't find any rhyme or reason for it. I think he needs a firmware update.
It is slightly uncanny that when Vincenzo is on screen, he will randomly blink. Even more disconcerting is that at 5:21 he winks at you.
Also I know it's pointless at this point, but pressing V and B actually rotates the camera. I had this game as a child as well and I rather enjoyed it, even if I cheated the entire time.
same xD first thing to do when starting a new game....give yourself tons of cash and ammo. then get yourself a nice army of super units. I remember not actually trying to win it. I rather was trying to take over the whole city and let the money flow. I found that very satisfying.
I know I’m late but that’s pretty fucking spooky
It seems he winks each time you extort a business
I need that Game Over song ripped.
Im going to play it as a midi on my phone when I get shot down by women at the bar....guess I'll be hearing it a lot
"Looking at the picture of the guy, I'd argue it's more about putting him out of his misery!" So true lol.
nice profile picture
Ive rewatched this 50 times already. And so have you.
I have to say, I rather like the Game Over theme. Not a terrible track.
Also, I noticed Jon St. John apparently lent his talents to this game. Somehow, I doubt he was being Duke Nukem, but its always nice to see him doing some voice acting in a game.
+Aedan Clarke _"Also, I noticed Jon St. John apparently lent his talents to this game."_
Funnily enough, St. John along with Minella, Drummond, Biagi, and Corkery were all in Sonic Heroes, too...
Honestly, I thought it was funny to listen to.
I could EASILY see it being the cheesy opener to a super serious 90s animated show in the same vein as Batman the Animated Series.
Just want to say, thank you for this video. It brought me way more joy than it should have.
A video on the sequel should be out within a month or so, only took years
@@Tehsnakerer why is download gangland game in pc
Sometimes I come back to this video and just bask in its glory. Idk why but something about this game and the commentary is just insanely funny to me at all times and I have no idea why its fantastic.
All that telephone ringing throughout this video's giving me anxiety.
Didn't see anyone else mention it here.
"Longest revenge/rescue mission ever" and then that chore of a game "Hunt Down the Freeman" made 20 years look short.
I actually did find a way to turtle up and build up in Conquest 8. You know, the one in the docks where there are 5 other families besides you. It was thanks to a little exploit I discovered, the AI ignores any shops you're extorting. They only care about the ones you actually own, and because they don't even try to claim resources for themselves, there's no risk of them buying those stores from under you. So just keep Mario and all your troops parked in the safe house to make sure they don't rush it (occasionally making runs out to the Bistro to recruit units), wait until you've amassed a sizable force and then go at it. Once you kill the first two families, the rushes get a lot more manageable and you can actually start buying stores and defending them. It takes forever, and I still had to take out the Orange family right away with my initial force, but it is doable.
This setting is anachronism soup but most staggering are the guys running around with Guy Fieri flame tees. 27:57
Guy Fieri fashion is timeless.
What gets me is your dead daughters at the top of the screen for most of the playthrough.
That's how mafia works.
I was a 13 year old when this game came out, I remember convincing my dad to purchase me the digital copy. This game is easily one of the most memorable I've played, good atmosphere.
This is one of the best reviews I've ever watched. And now I've gone through and watched a bunch of your other reviews. Bloody fantastic channel.
It was just a guess, but I always felt that the fact that the advisor dude looks so much like Paulie Walnuts gives us a strong clue as to why this game came out when it did.
Ey Tone, whats with the jank?
At least, from the mention of Mario running up and fighting (and being the first one shot) can explain why his guys follow him LOYALLY. He's in the shit with them!
It doesn't explain why they abandon him after every mission, but it's probably related to him losing all of his money. Maybe the survivors get pensions.
Did you enjoy the meatballs?
+angrybarf76 I will make them someday
+Tehsnakerer The only consolation prize for a long twisted session of torture both mental and physical. Mama's Meatballs (c).

Maybe it had something to do with the Metal Gear Solid series? ^_^ There was some music from MGS in his Sims 3 review. :)
Absolutely fucking WHEEZING at "A beautiful child."
What's a 'scull' and how do you crush it?
It's a pair of oars, and with pressure I imagine
This isn't that bad of a game. Me and my brother used to play against each other in this game alot. It was pretty fun trying to take over the city as you made your way to the other player whilst also keeping the cops at bay through bribery and such unless you wanted to find yourself at war with the police too. Kinda sad there is no other mafia game like it.
Doseku gangsters 2:vendetta
Doseku how can you play it multiplayer??
well it has a Multiplayer lol you can play via LAN or Internet. Sadly no one's around these Days to play ._.
I played this as a young teen and could not figure out why it's one of the few games that I actually finished at that age. Wow. Young me got some serious tolerance to repetition.
Also I found the rampant collateral damage to civilians hilarious along with the resulting police attention. Thank you very much for this video!
You know, I must have watched this video at least 10 times since I subscribed two years ago, and I never noticed Vincenzo on the bottom right telling your objectives in the first few levels before today.
Ahh, Denmark. The creators of Hitman and.....uh....this game. xD
@Viktor Turtle nah, IO's danish
subscribed.. because of his review style..cracked me up.
I loved this game when I was younger, but the whole fun was getting from zero to rich mafia boss, so the part where you beat the enemy always felt like a chore.
From memory all you have to do is wait until you get 4 snipers and then everything dies in seconds.
【Sunglasses Pirates】I really needed this, this game drives me to nostalogia craze and i need to hear for what it is
Mario's in-engine model has _ridiculously_ wide shoulders. Now, this isn't necessarily a problem! You're looking at your units from above and far off; over-exaggerated designs are necessary for details to be readable from your perspective.
It's a good thing the cutslides don't use screenshots of game assets, or it would make Mario look...oh wait.
Wow I watched the whole thing. Awesome vid, dude
Here I am, realizing that the newly released "Empire Of Sin" (late 2020) is like an updated vertion of "Gangland".
Aka a grindy, mafia style RTS (although Empire of sin is more like a turn based rts) about taking over the City.
And that I say, liking Empire of Sin. Just finding the similarities hilarious.
So this is how Mafia works...
Honestly, this game kinda reminds me of this old gangster RTS called Legal Crime, which was set in the 1930's and you were playing as Don Capone, and had to start you empire. This is kinda the same, just in 3D with RPG elements
Am I the only one who hates Impact as a font in general? Especially in a video game, doesn't matter how good it is
Impact is worse than Comic Sans change my mind
@@badger6728 Impact's ugliness comes from being as space-efficient as possible. Comic Sans is just ugly.
Done.
I played this game that 2004. It was addictive! And for that time was great game.
Nah... Half Life 3, Rome total war, GTA San Andreas, MGS3: snake eater or Dawn of War were great for 2004. This was not.
>Half Life 3
I liked the game when I was a kid and I don't think graphics was that bad for 2004.
Had a lot of good hours trying to figure out how to pass those missions.
Really adored all those ways you could manage your empire, like having a fat son going to the restaurant and simultaneously taking over rum distillery, so you would have x4 money from the restaurant and money would be flowing in like you're jeff bezos. Or hiring only ninjas and superbouncers and fucking up anyone who would simply approach. I'm genuinely upset the game wasn't developed further. I was looking for a game like that, but better built, since then and this new "empire of sin" seems to be exactly it.
Actually, I loved this game when I was in school!
Nobody said you didn't...
one of my favourites games, i would like games like this...
Is this how Mafia works?
Oh my god. I thought this game was a fever dream. I definitely owned this as a kid but I’ve always assumed I was just mixing up the Mafia series with Commando or C+C or that it was an expansion to some other obscure game I owned. It seems just as bad as I remember it being but I was obsessed with anything mafia-related so I continually played it anyway.
I may be misremembering, but I believe the god mode cheat code was “greattobetheboss” and it was the only reason I put more than ten hours into this game. I don’t know why that randomly popped into my head while watching this even though I remember literally nothing else about this game.
Why has this guy not got more views ?!
"This video will spoil the game"
Isn't that fairly normal for your reviews at this point? You write amazing essays but by no account would I recommend your videos as reviews, they tend to be bad at explaining the intended audience and giving a recommendation before summarizing the entire plot.
I'm not complaining, Snakerer, I love your videos, but you're just being silly this far in.
Could just be in case this is someone's first time watching one of his videos.
ilove this game when iwas akid
"and for fucks sake vinchenzo stop selling my fucking tommy gun"
this WAS a FANTASTIC review for all INTENSIVE purposes, TO WHICH I am GRATEFUL. sorry FOR my bad ENGLISH
It sounds like this game tried to be a normal RTS, where everyone starts at 0 and has to work from there...but it makes little sense for a game like this as a mob boss. They took base building RTS like starcraft but made it worse and make no sense in the context of the game.
I think I played a Demo of this as a kid. Around the same time I was playing the demo for Total Annihilation Kingdoms and wishing my computer could run Sacred 1.
@14:10 Did you add that music in? Or was that the game. I swear that is from that old animal planet show, the most extreme.
【Shades Finnish Pirates】Thanks i really looked hard to find this, i actually needed to see how the game plays on video before trying and i think i am gonna skip even if nostalogia made this game with cartoony graphics
Mario: *blows himself up*
“Arrivederci baby!”
I had this back in the day too! Or well, my brother had it, which meant I had it, haha. It was made by a Danish crew though so maybe it was bigger here (Denmark) :)
Man, the amount of typos in this game is staggering.
Damn I played this game back in 2006 it was good
Why do you have so many locked slots at the top of the units?
I remember getting the game on at least two CDs packed in with PC magazines. One in Germany, one in Poland. It also got a decent amount of exposure in PC magazines in general. Is that possibly the reason why it's on gog?
I like this game.
I have very weirdly fond memories of this game...
Still waiting for that "Playing Spike the Hedgehog" video, though.
hold on were's the Irish mafias??? they remember theirs was once an Jewish mafias witch only lasted during the prohibition but the Irish mafias still here to day.
1:09 Ok but... Pro Spike The Hedgehog when, Tehsnakerer?
This kinda reminds me of an old game about football hooligans... I think it was called... hooligans
is that music on the credits the ingame music or some other song? either way, does anyone have the name/artist of that song?
If you happen to ever read these comments on old vids, a great follow up would be the equally obscure Mob Rule.. and/or The Sting. Both are non-traditional strategy games with a crime theme. Both I somehow played as an 8 year old..
This game looks fire af
Redownloaded this game as I played it a ton as a kid, but damn I forgot how bad the camera controls are. Totally unplayable for me.
My bestie actually knows the guy who voiced Mario, Bill Corkery, because he went to high school with i believe his daughter? One of his kids anyway, both his son and daughter were in Sonic Heroes as Tails and Charmy respectively, where he was Espio
That's the good trivia
I own this game, with that printed manual. Somehow I enjoyed this game back in 2006.
Oh god I remember playing this, always wanted to find it :D
Holy crap. I played this game back in the day good enough that I remember the combat vividly. Cool find.

Like you, idk how I ended up with a copy either, but I kinda still like it.
You ever fjnd any way to mod the game? Been trying to figure out a way to swap skins of units or remove the hire limit of henchmen/goons. You have any ideas?
you should speedrun this game
+Uldis Gailis I could shave a few hours off of my time and decades off of my life
who cares about decades of life when you can hold a world record in completing a game noone has ever heard about faster than anyone else in the world (tho perhaps you already do since your the only one who ever completed the whole game)
Considering how the recruitment system in this game works, I don't think it's technically even possible to speedrun it. It's all luck of the draw, really.
oh hey, i had this when i was a kid!
the only thing i liked about it was the cool looking car on the cover art
Woah this video just brought back (what I’m assuming were) repressed memories of this game from when I was probably about the same age you mentioned haha
jeez that unit cap mechanic is so maliciously anti player
Nice review.

Have you ever done Abomination: The Nemesis Project?
idk about the map you were on but as of my short time playing the game recently, i noticed there are at times atleast 2 police stations =] perhaps there was another?
