Honestly, a Lich that uses a city as their phylactery is pretty genius. A character who built the city, deciding to watch over it for all eternity by binding their soul to it. Nothing less than the razing of the burg down to its foundations will have a hope of destroying the Lich. Meanwhile, would-be adventurers keep trying to track down small trinkets hidden in fortified and trapped caches, not realizing they are elaborate decoys.

Lol if this were in a dnd campaign, I could definitely foresee a thirty minute long argument over what constitutes a city. If it’s based off population primarily, PCs would have to decide if it’s worth culling a significant portion of the citizens in order to save everyone, or maybe imposing strict population control to slowly decrease the citizenry over generations. If only the creators had the passion to build on the idea, instead of just throwing it out of an oven that just finished preheating, not even half baked

Actually very impressive and makes me wish the characters were part of a better game because the art is just that good at making the characters seem cool and expressive. The original gangland was popular when it first came out. The problem was they used a fairly insane copy protection on it at the time that involved having to unplug your CD drive in order to defeat. I think that's one of the reasons it didn't actually stick around. It's not sold anywhere, and it wasn't easy to pirate. I feel like I just watched....not a car crash, but rather two cars place themselves bumper to bumper and ease on the gas as the wheels spin in place and the slight sway threatens to result in one actually spinning off into forward movement, before both drivers get bored and leave knowing well that they just possibly just did serious internal damage to a mechanism or three and DEFINITELY wasted everyone's time.
A waste of everyone's time until someone took a recording of the incident and made a documentary about why it's boring to a scientifically factual degree in a process that is paradoxically enthralling.

The most bizzare thing about this game for me is that the way I found out this game existed was through a flyer in an album by german rapper Kool Savss, who was pretty popular when this game came out. Hemade one of the songs from his then new solo album the games title song and he wasn't even a newcomer or in any position where he desperately needed the money. The song also seems to be exclusive to the german version which makes all of this even more jarring because he was also featured in all versions of the Tony Hawk's Underground 2 soundtrack around the same time.

I've rewatched this video more times than Boris has taken additional government funding, and I gotta say, I have a LOT to say regarding how this game was very close to working in concept and gameplay.
The idea of a sequel to a relatively grounded first game adding fantastical elements like technology and magic and vampires... the idea of the leader of a dangerous organization rising from the ashes of a formerly terminally divided crime city years prior, being figuratively and literally powered by territory control and money syphoning... this is quite literally the kind of serial escalation I'd expect from a beat 'em up series, not from an RTS-RPG hybrid. Streets of Rage is the first thing that comes to mind, as the series starts out with the mafia, then the sequels add robots, cyborgs, nuclear warfare, magical ninjas and mind controlling music, among other things. Yet it worked for that series and not Escape from Paradise City, which COULD have pulled the insane premise off if it had better writing and a bigger budget. Or if this was a beat 'em up. Beat 'em ups always have wacky plots in some form or another.
I also find it hilarious that this game released in 2007, a few years after Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, the expansion for Warcraft III, because the bonus Orc campaign, The Founding of Durotar, quite literally is built like an action RPG with sidequests in the engine of an RTS game, and basically served as a prototype for World of Warcraft. Even base Wacraft III, with its RPG elements and smaller army sizes and low population caps, alongside Hero unit skills that you could choose between, some of them being summons that you could amass a small army out of, equipment you can afford and neutral non-faction owned hostile units you can battle for extra goodies, were things that predated Escape from Paradise City. They really stood no chance even from conception alone.
A lot of this really makes me wonder what your thoughts are on anachronistic stew RPGs, like the Dungeon Siege games, which have things like guns and robots and surprisingly modern technology in places amidst a mostly medieval world and setting. You can equip miniguns and grenade launchers in the first game, allowing you to recreate the goofiness of this game by unleashing a volley of flak for surprisingly low damage compared to things like crossbows and shortswords. Maybe in like 10 years you'll get around to reviewing the series.

I've been thinking about these characters and the way they work, and I fee like the best way to go would be for each one to have to play a little differently. With Boris, there's no mercy, no second chances, you kill the current neighborhood boss, put one of your own people in charge, and they take orders directly from you. He'd be the character where you have the most direct control of your organization. With Angel, it's just the opposite, bosses don't really work for you, but you can convince them to lay off you for a while as you go after your real target, that way, stealth is actually useful. And the last guy would just play the way he does now.

It can happen. Microsoft writes something that's supposed to work a certain way, developers use it the way it's supposed to be, and usually this is fine - this is why Oregon Trail II for Windows 3.1 still works fine on Win10. But sometimes Microsoft accidentally subtly changes something, and it breaks a few programs noone cares about for ten years until they fix or accidentally un-break it.
