people here seem to be misunderstanding something. he brings all this gear because he uses all the gear. its very clear when he actually shows you what he is doing, how he is doing it and the gear he is using to do it." Live" in electronic music is a misleading term but this is as live as you are going to get. this guy is a great producer and excellent performer and all round good-guy
+fitzjay01 i wouldnt say its a misleading term because hes not playing every note/instrument in realtime, the term live can be used for any performance, which doesnt need to be musical at all.
+Aaron Wilson like, what? People created the house music. Aira is more or less hated by most. Aira will bring back the real house producers ? WTF. Im using a Casio RZ 1 so that means Im totally a real house producer or a fake coz Roland invented house ? Think twice sometimes, or even once, but do it.
that's pretty naive, thinking that roland is reinventing anything.. there are muuuuch better hardware options than this software in hardware boxes which roland is releasing, but yeah they are cheap, so a lot of newbies can join the joy of using hardware.
I will never understand how anybody can hate on this dude / true fan of music - gave away what other charge for / droppin science for free / just now answered like 10 questions I had / kink we need you in hip hop - much luv for all the pros that take the time to help us amateurs
One of the best, most high energy live shows I've ever seen - kept getting random crowd members to come press random buttons on the launchpads to create sequences etc, and would just run with it. Played close to 4 hours and didn't look tired at all, but the club had already exceeded their licence by 40 minutes. Friendliest guy ever to top it off.
I've been listening to electronic music my whole life. And I was always amazed how people can create music live out of nothing. He only needs a few devices and his own endless imagination. It's just incredible to me.
this dude needs a Master's Class .... great producer/dj and able to tell you exactly what you need to know within a very complicated and easily overwhelming field
Its absolutely impressive how good he is at live performing. For me the hardest part is to get the right setup and to basically set it all up with ableton, some loops and all that stuff. And thank you four sharing your setup, it will definitely help me :)
This series is one of the most engaging ever, I don't get so much out of Against The Clock, just some Techno being banged out in a sweaty ten mins. This shows the mechanics of live performance and reassures me my own approach, however limited by economics, is right up there with the best.
To help backup the opinions of everybody here who believes this guy is awesome, the original meaning of DJ is disc jockey, he had applied this classic concept of crossfsding between two vinyl decks instead to his digital laptop situation, incorporating loops and different samples and percussion, KiNK is one of the endless amount of guys who persuaded me that my laptop and I myself wasn't useless when it comes to creating this genre of music, he goes about his music in a unique way, not always brining in the the right loop at the right time, yet, this sort of mistake/intended action brings about diversity in his pieces, hope you see this KiNK so you know that you definitely have some well believing fans out there :D keep it up, especially love your past boiler room sets, get on there again mate! :D
Impressive. This is a well thought out setup, with a bit of chaos factor thrown in for good measure. This guy knows his gear and executes some very dynamic sequences on the fly. I really enjoy these live p.a. type of sets.
So happy i got to meet this man, fuck everytime i see this bloke i get fate in humanity, his attitude is awesome! #fanboybehavior, but no seriously, Kink you do inspire me as a producer and writer.
If you think about it, these sounds are about as new as an electric guitar was in the 90s. That's nice IMO, because they are classic instruments already.
+Walter Uncles Possibly the one distributed by novation. Also, theres launchpad95 and LPC2 which are really cool too which gets around it being purely locked to the step sequencing function.
the idea of what the ring does, is very similar to what the "D-Beam" used to be for on the roland mc-505. and that was GREAT fun! he cracked me up when he said "make it nice for NORMAL people in the club" ha ha ha... eyh... i think we know what he means there!
he is soooo talented, and he is totally Immersed in house and techno music. U can see AND hear that he grew up with it. besides his gifted talent for the leploop (which I envy because I am beginning to make music with it) he uses some boxes (not the most expensive, not the shiniest ones) but what comes out is the whole range of club sound from ca. 81 to 98 in perfect style. AND it is as live as it can be. Made for the crowd to dance. Better than most of this LIVE guys with CDJS and TRAKTOR. Absolutely bloody amazing and NICE:) I will book him to VIENNA as soon as possible.
Man my hats off to you... you are amazing do you know how to play keyboards or did you just pick it up as you went along...and what cool is all that equipment is not that expensive...the most costly thing there would be the laptop then the mixer
I don’t think he uses VST plug-ins. Even with current MacBook Pros, using VSTs on live performance is a little risky. Considering how many different sounds he use, he probably chose ABL instruments instead of VSTs. He might have a couple of dedicated plug-ins of course, but putting tens of VSTs in a live set is pretty dangerous.
I don't get the "tape on the record" trick - how does this cause it to loop so perfectly? Isn't this bad for the needle? Cool trick, just have no idea how it works.
It's a slight miscommunication; he does make it sound like the tape is the reason why the record is looping, but it's not. It's a looping vinyl, usually used for scratch records. The trick with the tape was more an indication of where the loop is located and where the sample starts on the vinyl.
The tape makes the needle jump, going to the beginning of the groove; when the tonearm is well balanced, the needle doesn't have a tendency to go forwards or backwards, while the grooves on the vinyl are pushing it further towards the center. When the needle bumps the tape it goes to the beginning of the loop because the groove is not pushing it further anymore. You can see more examples of this on the Mechanical Techno Demonstration video by Graham Dunning. It doesn't have to be a scratch record, in this case you can actually hear the click of the tape making the loop. If it was a scratch record he just needed to cue it normally and put the tape on the label instead of the grooves. I'm not sure about the damage, but thats the nature of things especially in this case because even if you play a record normally, the needle is slowly wearing the record out, and the needle itself is already a very sensitive thing not expecting much resistance. Best regards
I wish they would show , for example" what is the the main Midi Clock" ? Is it the Tr - 8 ? or is Ableton slaved to the clock of the TR-8 and which Novation launch pad's are going to which channel in Ableton. .That would be interesting Thanks
kinky here, accidentaly came back to this video. I`m still using similar system, 3 years after this video. Main midi clock is Ableton, the other way around TR-8 introduces jitter and totally fucks up the sound of the audio clips, especially those, stretched with the Beat algorhythm. Launchpads - I use one to launch pre-recorded clips, the other - to start recording midi clips. Launchpads are not assigned to channels, as I have over 400 channels now, the launchpads are my "browser" through them. i got about 20 midi channels for recording, launchpad 1 stays in that area. the other i use to browse through the few hundred channels. Each track / loop is a channel, cause i want to be able to mix anything with anything, any moment, with no preparation. Yeah, we missed many details, but I need 5-10h video to explain all.. and im already forgetting a lot of things.. i can remember when people actually ask me..
anyone know what is this max patch that he talks about for the launchpad to control the 303 emulator plugin? i know that the plugin and the max patch sequencer are independent. so it could be used with any other plug in.

So musical. This is a pretty mindblowing example of using midi and midi controllers in a live environment. Thank you for sharing

Anyone familiar with the M4L patch he's using to make his launchpad act as a sequencer for that 303 sound @ 9:40?
+Walter Uncles Possibly the one distributed by novation. Also, theres launchpad95 and LPC2 which are really cool too which gets around it being purely locked to the step sequencing function.
It is the old step sequencer from Sonic Faction that comes with their 303 emulation rack for ableton
Yes
@@michaelbosch7565 wrong. It's on the maelstrom patch in reason
@Theo Lauder he is using Ableton and I have the m4l patch myself it is the old version of Evilfish 303 from Sonic Faction

fayekhelmi any luck finding the Max patch?
Wow, that was seriously impressive and enlightening.
the tape on the vinyl for the vocal loop! genius.
True, it is a genius idea, but it's one that goes back around 25, 30 or 40 years, by hip hop dj's, mainly for battles and turntablist routines
What a talented and nice guy...bravo

what is he using for a string synth/sampler ? anyone know?
