milk has calcium to strengthen the bones and help in growing up and its usually promoted to young children to drink milk so they dont stop their growth. The milk drinking is a reference to that fact
Plus it's probably a nod to the anime trope of girls drinking milk in a vain attempt to increase their 'size'; in this case showing Ruby's naivety in why they drink milk.

Jaune accidently demonstrated a pro level of attracting a top tier girl. He acted completely unimpressed by the extremely impressive girl, which she is totally not used to. That always works, it makes him stand out from everybody else.
she's not well known as she's only a student he just called her "red" because she was wearing red and as a hint to the fairy tale she's based on (lots of main characters are based on fairy tales some get pretty big hints).
they aren't the strongest but they are pretty good for their age

Yeah, so, editing RWBY reactions has always been uncalled for. RoosterTeeth is down with everyone enjoying their hard work. Even if any videos of this series get hit by UA-cam, just appeal or message RT. I've heard no one has had a bad time with them.

Also fun fact: Each character is based on a Fairy Tales, Historical Tales and Mythology characters. So keep that in mind
Just in case noone mentioned it yet: Almost all characters are based on either a character of a fairy tale (Team RWBY; Ruby is Little Red Riding Hood, Weiss is Snow White, Blake is from Beauty And The Beast, Yang is Goldilocks; Prof Ozpin is the Wizard of Oz and Glinda Goodwitch is the Good Witch from the same tale) or mythology (Team JNPR are genderbent versions of Joan of Arc (Jaune Arc), Thor (Nora), Achilles (Phyrra) and Mulan (Ren))
What is funny is Ruby’s totally "everyday" response on meeting Professor Ozpyn, which is the equivalent of meeting Dumbuldore of Hogwarts. But instead of gushing, Ruby is a simple "pleased to meet you".
In america its a common belief that milk makes your bones stronger and therefore increases your height. Since milk has a lot of calcium in it, it does actually help your bones, but I'm not actually sure if it helps you grow taller. It's like something parents say to kids that don't wanna drink milk, yaknow?
"I drink milk". It’s taken from old American advertising campaigns, which promoted milk in helping build bones and supposedly help you grow. "Milk! It does a body good!"
Context to the drinking milk joke. In America, we like to say Drink milk to make your bones get stronger and so you can get taller.
So RWBY is an amalgamation of many different fairy tales, myths and folklore from around the world, but the story structure takes its strongest inspiration from the children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, published in the year 1900. The titular character's full name from the books is Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkle Emmannuel Ambroise Diggs[1] (also known as the "Wizard of Oz"...take the first letters of all those names and you get OZPIN HEAD(master) [of Beacon Academy] in THIS story (RWBY). Clever, no?
Its been a grannmas take for years drinking milk makes u grow tall and not drinking milk makes u short , its based on the fact that milk strenghens bones

The milk joke is an USA thing. The reason for it is because the milk industry has a huge chokehold in the USA and advertized buying milk products like it was our god given right. US kids grew up with commercials and posters with the slogans 'Got Milk?' and tv ads constantly telling us 'milk will make your bones strong' etc. We grew up with the mindset that we need milk to be big and strong and healthy. Its interesting to see a non american react to that joke haha

For the milk comment, it is an American thing, milk commercials would advise in humorous ways that Milk is good for growing bones, and important for kids to grow up big and strong. So some will joke about it being linked to shortness, though Ruby was just making a joke that's a play on words. 💙

And yeah. Vol 1 has really short episodes as they just started as youtube videos, not a full fledged show or anything. They get longer as the seasons go on.
Once tou get real deep into the series, it is REALLY fun to look up fan theories and ships for RWBY. Once everyone has been fighting together and grown to truly care about each other. The character dynamics are so beautiful, and the diehard fans make spectacular head canons for this show.
I've started watching this show recently, and I'm up to the last 4 episodes of volume 5. I also started this show along side with One piece (11 episodes in) and Digimon adventure 2 (7 episodes in). I started this show after finishing Blark and Son.

Many get hooked on RWBY by the fantastic action scenes early on, but it's the wonderful characters and storyline that really make this show so unique and liked!! Just my opinion, of course.... LoL
Take in everything in each episode as best you can. And welcome to the FNDM......or the RWBYverse!! Call it what you will. It is very lovely, very opinionated, but mostly quite loyal to the show!!! Please take us with a grain of salt.

Yeah the short episodes and shadow people are a result of V1 having like... no budget lol
If you're enjoying V1 despite its rough edges, you'll be happy to know V2 improves on it in every way. Longer episodes. More detailed backgrounds. More fights. Better fights. Better jokes. More plot. It's a big step up. Still very low budget! But you can really see them gaining steam in V2
