In Sri Lanka, price of a pair of shoes will be around RS 3000. There are some people trying to scam foreigners. Even some times they scam Sri Lankan people too. If you are buying some thing or hiring taxi, first thing you have to do is ask for price. If he doesn’t say, better thing is to leave him. Since you are a full time traveller, getting caught on those scammers is very low compared to other foreigners. But, some foreigners get caught on those scammers. There are alot of genuine sellers. But this is definitely disgusting.

This is unfortunately widespread in Sri Lanka. Tuk-tuk riding can also be annoying. Even when you agree on a price, you may find yourself in an unpleasant situation. Higher prices for tourists is a standard. A smile on people's faces means trouble very often. The solicitation attempts take place on the train, beach, shops, tuk-tuk, name it yourself. It's a pity it looks like that. Non-trade people are very nice and friendly. Watch out for the scams.

I visited Sri Lanka years ago and enjoyed many things while there - but things like this do happen in almost any country where there are many tourists. This is unfortunately widespread in Sri Lanka.
Tuk-tuk riding can also be annoying. Even when you agree on a price, you may find yourself in an unpleasant situation. Higher prices for tourists is a standard. A smile on people's faces means trouble very often. The solicitation attempts take place on the train, beach, shops, tuk-tuk, name it yourself. It's a pity it looks like that. Non-trade people are very nice and friendly.
Watch out for the scams.

I'm sorry for your experience. I mean, it was a funny video for what happened with your shoes, but I can imagine it must be annoying. I visited Sri Lanka years ago and enjoyed many things while there - but things like this do happen in almost any country where there are many tourists. It's life I guess - sometimes people get desperate and do all sorts of things - it's not an excuse, but good to see you've been very gracious about it.
Can't believe the shoe cleaner did that think he charged you for the next 10 customers too.
