  • It appears that Delta lost my journals :( I also show you what my journaling looks like with very minimal journaling supplies and a couple things I have picked up in Germany.
Have you ever lost any of your journals?
And have you ever journaled in a Leuchtturm1917 notebook?

You are handling this like an absolute champ Maike. I don't think I would have been so calm and collected about this whole ordeal. Not only losing your memories but also how expensive Hobonichi brands journals are that you lost....I'm so sorry this has happened to you. How long will Delta continue to search for? And if they can't find it in the end will you get compensated in some sort of way? (I don't live in America so I don't know how everything goes there)

    • @MaikeOatley
      @MaikeOatley  7 місяців тому

Aw thank you for your sweet comment. As far as I understand it, Delta searches for the bags for 21-31 days until they are declared "officially lost", at which point we would then be compensated for what was in the suitcases and I would think/hope to get my money back for all of the Hobonichi items. We already had to fill out a form in which we listed everything that was in our suitcases and their monetary value. Luckily I have all my Hobonichi receipts. If Delta finds the suitcases after the reimbursement, they will still reunite you with your belongings. So yeah, I'd love to get my suitcase back, but if I don't, I will at least get my money back.

@@MaikeOatley If your suitcases won't be found and you get the money back, which was also a question you asked in your video: If I were you I would buy all the journals and stuff you have lost and start again. The reason why is that you had such amazing ideas for them and it would be so sad that a stupid airline would ruin all of that. A little story of my own: I bought a bullet journal last year September and I was planning to make it my best journal yet for 2024. I only was able to prep 15 pages when it suddenly completely fell apart. It was not a cheap journal either but the binding was terrible. I was massively disappointed. However I did get my money back and instead, I bought a Kinbor, which is a dupe of Hobonichi and looks almost exactly the same and I'm honestly so happy now that I'm using this one instead of the bullet journal I've had first. I'm having so much fun and it's even prettier and better now than my last one! I understand if there is a lack of motivation, but I believe everything happens for a reason and maybe the Universe had different ideas for you.

@@demycrafts thank you for sharing your story! It's good to hear that things turned out better than you had even expected. If you were disappointed with the binding, it makes sense that you decided to buy a different kind of notebook. Are you still using the Kinbor as a bullet journal? Or did you also change the way you journal/ plan? I am trying to be really mindful about what I am going to do with my journal lineup now that it looks like I am going to be starting from scratch. I don"t want to rush any decisions and really take this as an opportunity. I don't want to just buy the next best journal and let the frustration of the moment keep me from having a meaningful journaling experience in 2024.

@@MaikeOatley Very understandable reasons! So I have been keeping a daily diary for 3 years now, and this will be my 4th. And I always used only 1. But since you have a business and a way busier life than me (I'm autistic and I have chronic fatigue syndrome so I cannot work) I can understand you wanting to use more than just 1 journal. For the first year I choose an A4 weekly agenda, the second one a page a day agenda and last year I used a Paperblanks notebook. All I did was document my days and what the weather was like. Now I'm using my Kinbor A5 as a mix of daily diary and bullet journaling for the first time and I'm enjoying it way more than the previous diaries! I have a habit tracker which the Hobonichi Cousin also has. I also have the monthly pages that I use to plan in appointments, birthdays and other events I need to take note of (however I liked your little month doodles as well!). And in the page per day pages I use the little vertical box for Dailies, To-Do's, and Gratitude journaling which you also have in the Hobonichi with the timestamps. And the rest of the space I use for my daily diary entries. My Kinbor has 16 empty grid pages and I use 3 of them for my book log, music I discover in 2024 and swatches of new pens and highlighters. If you would like to see what my pages look like, I have an instagram called demyleighdiary where I post my pages and spreads and I'm also willing to send photos of them if you want! I already follow you on there too hihi. Kinbor is an amazing Hobonichi dupe, however it does not have the weeklies, so you'd have to buy them seperately. But in the next year or 2 I'm planning to move from a city to a town which will make my life way more productive and when that time goes I'm definitely investing in the real Hobonichi Cousin!

Oh my... I am feeling so angry and frustrated with Delta on your behalf! To take passengers cabin bags and not ensure they are tagged correctly is really unbelievable... The last trip we made, we did actually put airtags in our checked bags and our cabin bags (for the first time), and we also put a slip of paper in each bag with our contact details (name and email/phone only to preserve some security) in case of loss. I hope the universe aligns and your journals make their way back to you one day; I totally understand why you might not want to replace like for like. At least you have the techo kaigi videos to remind you of the work you had put into them. Keeping everything crossed for a happy resolution 🤞

Oh Maika😢 I am devastated for you. I can see and hear how hard you are strong to be strong and (typically German) about being so polite and collected about what Delta have done to you - sorry my anger is slightly coming through. Hindsight is a wonderful thing for next time but it sometimes make looking back very bitterly painful. It is a pain and yes you can replace most of the journals but I agree the 5-year is priceless. For me I feel it would be too painful to replace like-for-like journal covers as I would still feel the loss of the originals each time I looked at them. I would take some time to journal each day about my feelings; what hurts and what I need to feel better and hopefully you will find the answers from within you. I would look at other covers to see what comes from it but don’t buy any replacement yet. I really admire your inspiring courage to make the best of what you have and making space to bring in new things that are coming your way - including being thankful for the free planner - even though it is not what you want. My heart breaks for you but I am also sending the universe some of my wishes for your case and journals to find their way back to you. I never write my details in my journals but the lesson I have from your experience is that I should. I am very moved by this video and how you want to share your vulnerability but also to help other to be more prepared to do-differently to also learn from your experience - this is very much my ethos behind being a mental health coach - if someone else can benefit from my life’s hard lessons then at least there is a bit more money’s-worth coming out of my pain. Anyway I am going to stop my essay but wish and wish and wish your journals back to you. Here’s REALLY hoping I get this one wish 🤞🏽🤞🏽🫶🏽 Varsha

I am leaning towards not replacing everything one-for-one, but I am definitely giving me (and Delta) time with this.

@@MaikeOatley some people may not get it but this is still grief you are experiencing. You invested a lot of your emotions into those journals, it’s ok to give yourself time to go through all the stages of grief, “disbelief” or denial is one of the stages so take your time to work through the processes of each stage. I tend to fall apart and not journal - even though normally journaling helps me, then when I come forward a little and find some of my inner power, I regret not writing about it. Thank you so much! I really appreciate your kind comment! Yes, from now on I will definitely pack my journals into my backpack and what doesnt fit, will stay home.

Thank you, I hope so too! It is quite upsetting... and it feels vulnerable too! Who knows who is reading my 5 year journal right now...

I bought that same origami book last week when I was in London! That is a great shop. I wish we had them in the US! I’m so sorry for your situation!!

The shop is so beautiful isn't it! I'm very much enjoying the paper! And who knows, maybe they'll cross over eventually :)

@@MaikeOatley One can hope! Thankfully for now having family and friends located in the UK will give me an excuse to visit this lovely place somewhat frequently. 🙂

Wow. That is crazy. I was getting ready to ask how you lose a carry on. This is exactly why I pack minimally and make my carryon a backpack that I can slide under my seat. I watch my bag like a hawk. That really sucks. I would be pissed. I hope they find it. You really are rolling with the punches and you seem to be handling it well. Maybe this is the universe simplifying your life.

Thank you! Yeah I am definitely becoming more and more of a minimalist with every time I travel.

I know it is kind of unbelievable that they'd be able to lose carry-ons... *sigh*

I can't believe it! I went to Spain from the Netherlands and they did put a tag at the gate when boarding but they lost my stamps, 2 Sailor fountain pen and a portable printer. 😢
I hope they find your stuff.
Nevertheless I wish you a happy new year.

A happy new year to you too! Oh no that's sooo sad! Especially fountain pens feel so personal, don't they. Are you at least getting compensated financially?

I love the word Resolute for your year. I haven't picked my word for 2024 yet, but I've been choosing a word for each year too since at least 2017. And it's such a bummer that your journals are missing... I hope they come back to you! I've been hoping to get back into journalling and your videos have been helping me to remember how important and fulfilling that practice was.

Thank you! Yes the word 'resolute" just sort of popped into my head one day and I thought "That's exactly it". I had been thinking a lot about what my struggles were in 2023 and what/how I could improve for 2024 and I guess my subconscious did the rest. Do you have a process for finding your word for the year? And I'm so glad to hear that you're finding my videos helpful :)
