I think you exploration is wonderful, but could also deter people from using this system when it is ideal. It doesn’t need all the things because in the end it’s the words on the page, the cover, and simplicity that makes it beautiful. I’ve used this system with a month, week horizontally, and quarterly book since 2018. I begin with the end in mind-easy to archive, easy to reference info, and cheaper than the Hobonichi Cousin. It fits in all my bags, takes up little space on a restaurant table, and travels everywhere with me. This is an amazing, functional, cost effective method if you go with personal preferences (which you emphasized beautifully) and not try to duplicate what you see on IG. Good video, and good to see your thoughts from your perspective. I love that you share the idea of being sure to follow those who match your style.
First and foremost thank you for your thoughts I do appreciate it . My intention was obviously not to deter people away from exploring the system but rather to invite them explore different planning systems and really ask the critical questions before hopping to a new planning system. I myself have struggled with this in the past because obviously the visual representation can be so tempting that we never look at it from a practicality standpoint if it’s actually suitable for us Im glad that it’s working for you and I truth be told each time I return to using it I do understand why it’s so wildly popular but the fact remains that it’s literally not for everyone Thanks for being here and for your kind words ❤

Love your video! ❤ What a wonderful explanation and demonstration of Traveler’s Company notebooks! 😊 I started using mine last year, about 8 months ago… best decision ever! 😄 It’s definitely a fantastic & functional system, with infinite customisation options… 🥰📔 It inspires me to take better care of my mental & physical health 💃 , get creative 🎨🖌️, take notes of my ideas & learning material 🧠 and even plan better! 📆
First video of yours and thank you for the detailed review/advice on traveler's notebooks. Just bought a grid passport insert to try out, and you gave some solid advice on to check out other creators that match our own style. And as a beginner, you hit the nail on the head of being overhwelmed by the "mess" style of others and not having a bunch of supplies and being discouraged that mine won't come out like that. I'll check more of your channel out!
Really enjoyed this video. This type of deep dive was exactly what I needed. The Traveler's notebook is something I should like in theory, but for some reason it doesn't call to me. I think it comes down to being a one book person and also how the insert don't lay flat.
I appreciate your comment! I do agree that the inserts don't lay flat and it adds to the experience for sure. I also feel this way when I first looked at the TN that in theory I should be obsessed with it but I'm not.
Just remove the insert when you want to journal or add stickers or other things and use a clip to keep pages flat, Small binder clips do not cost alot,
I use a cut down stalogy in my TN cover, along with a pvc folder that I expanded the spine on to wrap my full year stalogy. It works wonderfully and I love having everything in one thicker notebook. So for those who want a standard stalogy and a midori cover, this is a perfect solution 👍😁❤️
I had this setup last year plus a weekly insert because I needed that dated structure. It worked very well. Needless to say, my Stalogy is a monster of a notebook now 😂. I'm back to thinner inserts this year and if I ever go back the Stalogy route, I'll probably just get the half-year version.
@katyagurina1492 mine bulked up like crazy for the first quarter, I to have switched to thinner inserts. I may have to change them out more often but it's far lighter too carry this way. 🤷♀️
I think my issue with TN is that I daily journal quite a bit. A hobonochi day-free lasts me half a year or so and can be pretty thick with all the things I paste on it. And the TN insert is only 60 pages or so. But I still wanna give TN a go, so I might just use it for ephemera keeping? Since it has a lot of pocket inserts, and go from there. Good video, thank you for the explanations!
I write on paper to develop some projects because it helps me delineate and iterate better. The issue is that I like A5, but they are too big to carry around (especially if I'm working on multiple projects simultaneously) and the notebooks have way more pages than I actually need, and A6 is just too small and a bit uncomfortable to write, so I bought a Traveler's Notebook and 3 blank inserts and gotta say, I'm liking it. It's comfortable to hold, the Midori paper is great (I write using black fineliners, and really just write, nothing else), and I can track 3 projects at the same time while having something that's easy to carry around. Maybe I'm a bit of an exception because I don't really do journaling, just some daily annotations to not forget ideas or things that happened, so it's been interesting checking around UA-cam what people use them for. My "system" is just the cover, 3 blank booklets, and a pen being held by the elastic band. And I really enjoy how simple-but-rugged everything looks, compared to the Leuchtturms I have and sometimes still use.
Thank you for such a a thorough dive. I love the lens you’ve taken here. I’ve known about the TN for quite some time now, but didn’t feel drawn to it until recently. A big part of it is Sterling Ink having the TN size in a compact version, which is perfect because I’m a one-book girlie (I found the Hobonichi Cousin too heavy as an EDC but the Weeks too small for my jampacked meeting schedules). I also got into fountain pens late last year, and am looking into using an undated monthly to use as an ink swatch book to supplement my set up. The choices for customization did overwhelm me a bit, though I just had to ground myself on what my intended purpose was for the TN.
I’m also considering this size because Sterling Ink offers a TN size with enough pages to plan (I use a digital and paper hybrid system because of many work meetings and tasks) and journal.
I try not to spend much money on inserts which are just functional and I won’t keep. You can get a set of 4 inserts with decent paper for about £7 from Amazon. For journals I want to decorate, memory keep and do art in I buy a better one or make my own. In fact if you are creative making your own inserts is so fun and gives a great sense of connection. Personal decorations can be so much more individual too rather than buying pre made expensive brass tags.
I totally agree with everything you said ! Except maybe you can use it as a planner with the dated monthly and weekly inserts. I LOVE my TN and always goes back to it but yes, it is expensive if you want it to be, it is a hobby for me, not just a planning/journaling system. But then again you can not get into the hype and buy what you need. I use mine with a monthly, a weekly and a dotted insert (number 26) that I use as my everything (I have ADHD so my use may be different, I use it to write down how I feel, what I’m doing, what I need to do, any information I need to write down, idea… I also use the same insert for memory keeping as I like going back to my inserts and reliving my life 😉 I have a code to categorize everything I write and it works perfectly ! As you said, you cannot refer to what you did or wrote weeks or months prior (One 26 insert lasts 1 month for me) so I have a separate reference planner where I write down everything I had categorized as info to keep before archiving my insert. It works great for me. Also I mainly use my phone calendar for my appointments so I can always go back in the calendar if need be. I hope this video gets seen by begginers to journaling, memory keeping, planning… it is indeed very useful to avoid buying every system there is out there before finding the one that suits our needs (let’s face it… we all kinda buy every system there is out there ! 😂😂)
Oh my goodness what an informative video. I was on the fence about the Diner edition and almost spent over $200 for it. I realized after watching this video that I do not need it. I have a VDS for functional planning and it is chunky. I like Travelers company for its simplicity; a cover I can take everywhere I go. I like it for journaling/scrapbooking and capturing the days I wish to always remember. I want to make sure it does not turn out to be a functional/planning cover because I would have to enter things twice and who has time for that. My husband and I traveled to Paris in 2012 (way before I knew anything about Travelers Company or any method of memory keeping but we sure did keep every piece of ephemera. In 2013 we went to Italy (Venice, France and Rome) and went to several many other places in Europe every year until Covid. We stopped. A couple of years ago I separated all the ephemera by trip and now I have a cover to put it all in (I got the Tokyo edition) for our overseas travels. The idea of having a separate cover just for capturing those days I want to remember and look back upon is intriguing. You mentioned a place that does embossing (the video script mentions bom kuhan) but I cannot find anything on this. I would like one embossed. Can you assist with leading me to the right place please? Again, thank you for this video!
It’s Baum Kuchen….it’s a shop in the USA you can buy from with embossing and or adding leather pockets or send your TN to them to be customised. Ive not done it as where I live I have to pay a fortune in import fees. You go to the Truly Yours section to find out about it. Then when you know what you want you email them and they sort it out for you.
21:33 This is so true. I got my first faux dori years ago when I didn’t plan or journal. Didn’t know what to do with it. Ended up jotting down random notes here and there. It didn’t look good, so I lost interest very quickly. The brand that actually got me into planning is Hobonichi. It’s very well structured but in a way still minimalist (it doesn’t give you boxes to specifically write this and that down like many other planners do. It just provides a loose structure that you can choose to follow or not). I though I would hate the dated system, yet it turns out that I quite like it. I kind of ease in with the weeks, and now I’m using an a6 original without too much pressure (I can fill the page with huge letterings or upsize my handwriting when I don’t have much things to say 😂. It’s actually not that hard to make it look “full” even when I’ve had a boring day) I think I know me better as a planning/journaling person now, and I probably would know how to fit a TN into my writing system (now that I actually have a writing system 😂). The inserts have temporary vibes and I would probably use them as some sort of on the go catch all book. It took me paying for many leather covers to realize that I actually prefer maybe lower grade but robust leather that can still age well. So TN is actually perfect for its purpose. I tend to baby too much the higher end leather and I end up putting them into their own bags just to put them in backpack😂 it kinda defeats the purpose of having a cover. I mean, it IS the cover. It really makes me think hard about it when I found myself deep down in this cover-on-cover-in-pouch-in-bag rabbit hole.
Useful video. The rustic nature of the TN cover and need to change the refills is what attracted me to this system. Haven’t found anyone who matches my style yet tho.
I use one of mine in the same way. Although, my cover is a plain, non customized cover:(. What cover do you use for this purpose? I got the Tokyo edition and I am going to use this one to insert all my traveling ephemera my hubby and I collected while traveling in Europe.
Thanks for this video. It was really helpful. I have been using the passport size which I love. Recently I bought the standard size and it is huge, so I’m still debating whether I have use for it. Your video had some good points. I’ve been looking at inserts and it sure can add up fast. Hmm! 🤔
You nailed all the reasons for and against. I wasn’t new to journaling but last year I decided 2024 would be the year I’ll seriously stick to it.
