Woodturning Inside Out Triple Fascination

In preparing for a remote demonstration, I guess I went crazy with some inside out turnings. An inside out turning can be fascinating. For an inside out turning, staves are temporarily fastened together while a profile is cut. Then each stave is rotated and permanently joined before turning another profile. The first turning is then on the inside while the second turning is outside.
Usually an inside out turning uses two or four staves. A two stave project is flat with an inner cavity. A four stave is more 3 dimensional with four windows into the interior. Sometimes, another object is placed inside the final turning.
A three stave inside out turning is a little more complex because the initial stock must be cut at a 60 degree angle. After that, the process is the same. However, a triple stave turning has larger windows into the interior. I like the larger windows.
While I was at it, I made two turnings with a captured sphere inside and one with an LED tea light inside.

Great idea and fun to boot!
On my sled I put a piece of clear plastic over the box so that I can see the blade. The box is long enough so I can see it before it sneaks out the back side!

It took me forever, well not quite, starting and stopping the video, to get a good look at the end profile of the individual pieces. #@*## fast forward. But I finally got a good look. Do you have a formula to determine length of the diagonal faces vs the diameter of the piece? You did such a good job of defining the measurements on your sphere video. Unfortunately not so here. Still the finished product is very nice. Good tip about protecting the ball during the outside turning. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay healthy.
I've tried to do some math here. it turns out to be very complex. You have an interior diameter and an external diameter. then the big variable is how thick you want the remaining stave. On this one I pushed the limits on the first turning for poplar. to go further, I'd have to have more confidence in the wood.

Neat idea. I’ve done a six segment inside out, but I like the open look of the three segments. I also like the sled for the table saw to cut the segments. Question, what brand was the small chuck (for the 3/4” hole)? Thanks. Stay safe and well to keep the videos coming. Cheers, Tom
That was an apprentice chuck (Craft Supplies USA) that I have for my small lathe. It has a 1x8 spindle so I also use an adapter.

I would like to see if the inside could be filled with resin. I’m thinking of a Christmas ornament with battery operated lights embedded in the resin. Possible? I have tried and failed. Alen, is it possible?
I am not sure why to do an inside out and then fill it. I guess you would have to create a container to hold the resin after gluing the staves together. More info required.
An easier approach would be to insert your resin piece up thru the bottom.

@@AsWoodTurns .. Ah, I see what you mean... i think. Turn the inside, then, turn the resin piece to fit the inside, then glue it all together with the resin piece inside, and turn the outside...thanks Alan, that might work.

I have done quite a few eccentric turnings over the past 9 years. All still available.

If you fold over the end of the duct tape to make a tab, the tab will hit you before the clamp. It will let you escape before you hit the clamp itself. At least it does me :)
Great tip but I will add that the tab needs to be longer than the clamp is high say 2-3x
