Wood Turning A New Inside Out Ornament
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 гру 2020
- I decided to turn another Inside Out Christmas Ornament. Made from Cherry and finished with shellac based sanding and the sprayed with lacquer.
These are fun to do and with a little practice they are not all that hard to do.
You can figure out what the shape will look like before starting but it is fun to see what develops.
I did one once that made a heart shaped window and that is fairly tricky to get right.
I used Zinsser Seal Coat and Rust-Oleum lacquer for the finish.

Lovely turning Gary thanks
Thank you Michael I appreciate you watching.
Gary
Very good video, and I’m glad I stayed until the end , taking notes, bc I have plenty pieces of 1&1/2” strips, but they are not 1&1/2X1&1/2, but rather 1&1/2”x 5/8”
Happy you watched it all. the pieces can be anything your have. It will just change the overall size of the turning.
But the do need to make a square when all 4 pieces are together.
So 1.5X1.5 for the each of the 4 pieces. 1.5X.62 will not work.
Hope that makes sense. i should have a drawing showing that if needed.
Gary
Very nice. Thanks for the hint to use brown paper on glue up

Very nice! I’m understanding better why gifted individuals are creative and have to get all that stuff out in one way or another. Prob feels like your head will explode. Kinda like an over pressure failure or something.
Thank you Danny. Actually doing these keeps my mind busy and keeps other things out of it.

@@ThePapa1947 I've been wanting to buy a lathe, I used to have one and I'm no stranger to woodworking. I am however struggling financially. I was hoping that you could point me in the right direction for a decent one, I definitely want to try to make one of your inside out ornaments and small decorations to sell.
We live in an are where it's mostly us older retired folks like me. We own our homes, cars and furniture as well, and if you could recommend small things that I can turn and sell. I hope you don't mind me asking. I recently came across your Utube channel and I've been watching and enjoying your videos, and the fact that you explain what you're doing better than the others.
Thank you for your kindness and you're Wonderful Videos.
Bob
For what you want to do a smaller lathe will do.
Ornaments, little round boxes and small vases for dried flowers (called weed pots) would be a good start
Not sure the price range you are in but something with electronic speed control is nice
I can recommend more based on price
Gary
Very beautiful, nice finish, 👍👍👍👍👍

great tutorial,im going to give this a go this weekend, thankyou
Thank you Lee and best of luck. Just take your time...enjoy!
Gary
Hi Gary......another beautiful turn! One of the things I appreciate about your work (and others of course) is your ability and talent of looking at wood as sectional...not just one piece of solid stock to be turned or hollowed. This kind of segmentational (new word!) crafting opens up a whole new horizon to wood shaping and carving...many thanks. Best wishes and stay healthy my friend.
Thank you so much Dr. Skip and I like the new word.
Take care,
Gary

@@ThePapa1947 gonna have a do at that but in mahogany.....
Gary, I am amazed at your talent, I am 65 and in high school I took workshop and loved working on the lathe and I never imagined the type of creations that you come up with. You are by far a real master at your craft, Danny.
Thank you very much Dan. I am a bit older than you and remember my first turning in a grade school shop class. I fell in love with turning on that day.
Then as an apprentice wood pattern maker the first job I made was turned on the lathe. Could not be much better than that. Needless to say I still love wood turning.
Gary
Hi Gary, that’s a beautiful ornament Take care dave
Hi Dave thank you very much!
Cheers,
Gary

Really creative and beautiful, I love the finish
Enjoyable video as always, thank you for sharing 😉
Thanks so much I am happy you enjoyed the video.
Thanks for watching...Gary
love it
Thank you very much!
I am intrigued by this inside-out business. It just twists my mind to see the form once it get inverted and what you can still do with it. This one is no exception Gary. Cherry is one of the most beautiful woods - simple and pure - and I am happy you chose it Gary. Thank you for sharing this beauty with us🙏 Stay safe. -Mike😷⏳💉
Thank you Mike and it is a very interesting process. Very fun to do for sure.
Yes Cherry is a pretty special wood. I used the shellac to deepen the color just a little. Clear lacquer would not have done that.
Hope all is well with you,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 We're doing fine. You and the clan ?
Deepens just a little for now though it will darken with age, eh?
Very nice Gary!!!! Always wondered how these got made. Thank you!!!
Thank you Chris and it does seem tricky but actually not all that hard to do.
Take care,
Gary
there beautiful ornament
Thank tou very much.
Gary
I always look forward to your new videos, Gary. This is another example of why I and so many others enjoy watching you work. Your turning prowess is wonderful and your explanations really set your videos on a much higher level than most of the other turners. Beautiful inside out turning, my friend. Really enjoyed watching you bring this piece to life! Thanks for sharing, my friend. Stay safe and healthy!! 👍👍👍
All the best,
.....Gord
Thank you Gord I appreciate your comments. I do enjoy turning and am happy you and others enjoy my videos.
Very happy to hear my explanations came through clear enough as sometimes I wonder if they make sense.
When I explain it to "someone" around here I just get a "Oh That's Nice" LOL
Thanks for watching my friend and take care,
Gary
Very very nice.i learned a few new things for my next one.i sent my first one to turners warehouse for st.judes action.it sold for 20.
Thank you and you sent yours to a very good place.
Take care,
Gary
Hi Gary , Brilliant ! and superbly demonstrated mate , I love the extra mile you went on this with the finishing touches on the stem.
Take care mate, Bram
Thanks so much Bram happy you liked it. That small amount I took off made a mile of difference!
Cheers my friend,
Gary
Hey Gary, great ornament and wonderful sharing. The sharing is something I've always loved about the craft.
I've made smaller inside-out ornaments in the past and I was inspired by your older video to make a few larger. Things I have learned from these vids:
Larger works great.
Strapping tape and big jaws for turning the inside. (I've used hot glue in the past and it worked "too well" -- the wood fibers would sometimes tear. Also hose clamps.)
When gluing up for the inside, just glue and brown paper on the ends. (Head-slap)
I've posted one on The WoWs site (World of Woodturners). About to post another. Don't know your last name and I will give attribution as Gary from Oregon. And your UA-cam name.
And thanks for sharing!
Thank you Greg happy to hear you are having fun making these. I do want to make a much bigger one but it will not be an Christmas ornament. I will check the WoW site and look around.
Someone posted one of my turnings on World Wide Woodturners and had his name for credit on it. Could have been an honest mistake but it was fixed after I questioned it.
I will be great to see yours and appreciate the attribution you will give.
Take care,
Gary
Pretty amazing Gary! I've never considered an ornament and knew nothing of the process. The method of turning the inside as you did is very interesting to me. Excellent result as always. Thanks for this!
You are very welcome Gil and glad you liked it. It is a fun project and with a little work you can control what the inside will look like when flipped. I did a heart last year and it was much harder to do. I like the surprise of what it will look like this way.
Take care,
Gary
Glad You made this video earlier, Gary, becouse I planned to turn something with this technique and You helped me a lot 👍 In one moment I thought that You made too thin walls and turning it forward will be very difficult but I forgot that You are keeping the chisels so everything is under control 👌 Beautiful ornament and great work 💪
Be safe my friend. Rav
Thank you Rav and those walls are about as thin as I wanted to go. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
Take care my friend,
Gary
Hi Papa, I made one after your last video, and the management loved it. It's been hanging in the french window ever since with a battery tea light inside. Seeing this might inspire me to make some for Christmas gifts. Thanks I really enjoyed it. God bless, stay safe. Tony
That is awesome Tony and if the management loves it then you can not go wrong. I am going to try and get 3 more done for gifts but will not do videos of them.
Gary
That really looks great!
Thanks so much Santo.
Take care,
Gary
I've made four last month, all in the learning mode, with different style windows in each. I use hot melt glue and tape on the beginning glue up, seem to work well. Have a good day, Gary. Bill
Thank you Bill and I have thought about using hot glue. Maybe the next one.
Take care,
Gary
Very nicely done!! Will be using the brown paper/glue AND strapping tape.
Thank you Gayle. It works very well for me.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

Большое спасибо, мой друг, я рада, что ты посмотрел и получил удовольствие.
Да будут вы благословлены миром и счастьем Бога.
Гэри
It looks really nice, I'm going to try it with white maple
Thank you I am happy you liked it. By all means white maple would be beautiful.
Gary
Thanks Gary, I will now use your 1/2 thickness tip. Still on learning curve. I perhaps made a mistake by using my "cheaper" wood to start out. Now will progress to some quality hardwoods cut into precise blanks.
Hi Bill, yes if you go much past that half point there will not be much to work with. Check out the video I pointed out in your previous comment. I think it is a great way for someone to get the hang of this. Although I did not use it on my first one. I came up with the idea when others were asking about inside out turnings.
If you have any questions feel free to ask.
Best of luck,
Gary
Always impressive your work my friend it's so beautiful christmas ornament, take care.
Thank you so much Sagar happy you enjoyed it.
All the best to you my friend,
Gary
Very nice Gary, as usual you succeed in another beautiful project.
Many thanks Tim! Happy you liked it.
Gary
Hi Gary... beautiful inside out ornament... I have never tried this... I must give it a go... I hope that you have a big tree to put it on ... lovely work...great video as always...take care... all the best.....Andy
Thanks Andy and you should give it a try. I am sure you would do just fine. We do not get real big trees anymore but these ornaments tend to hang somewhere all year long.
Cheers,
Gary
Lovely ornament Gary, and finished to perfection! I have made several of those but did a little different by adding a small figure of something in side the opening using a different colored wood! Now I have a problem as it has been several years since I made them and can't remember how to get the figure inside! Thanks for the great video and keep them coming!
Cheers Al
Thank you Al I am happy you liked it. I have not put anything inside but you need to do that after the first turning and before you glue the pieces together for the final time. One of these days I will put something in one of them.
Take care,
Gary
That turned out so good and it’s very beautiful love it take care Gary
