Woodturning: My First Christmas Ornament! (2019)

- A huge THANK YOU to all my subsribers and viewers! This is my 12th filmed project, and I finally got around to making something Christmas related! This is my first Christmas ornament, and I'm pretty happy with it! Let me know what you think!
I want to thank Frogblanks.com for sending me these samples! I was very impressed with the quality of the pieces, the vivid colors, and the workability. Since these are laminated veneer sheets, you'll find that tools dull fairly quickly, similar to turning exotic wood species with high silica content. However, these blanks have potential for a natural high polish without adding any finishing polish. Altogether, I am very impressed with these blanks, and I would definitely recommend this company to anyone interested in engineered wood.
I really like how this ornament design turned out, since the ribbon is held with a knot at the bottom of the hole to keep the snowman centered and free floating. The ribbon itself is adjustable in the hole and can be twisted to accommodate any hanging angle. I did have trouble installing the eyelit in the top hat. Given the hardness of the katalox, I had to drill a 1/16 inch hole in the hat and then CA glue the eyelit in order to get it to work, but it turned out ok in the end. Let me know what you think!
I really appreciate all of the comments and feedback. I am always willing to learn. I'm also trying to become more efficient with my finishing techniques. If you'd like to help me out, feel free to comment and let me know how I'm doing! Also, let me know what you'd like me to make next!
If you're not a subscriber, it would really help me out if you became one! Also, comments, likes, and shares really help promote my videos, and I always enjoy reading and responding to them.

Lots of good things come from Maine!
So very pretty. In regards to what I’d like to see you make is any pieces out of the burl or living edge pieces. Thanks for your talent. Don’t stop making videos. I’ve almost finished watching them all!
For your first Christmas ornament, you did a great job. Well done. I wished that laminated ply was available in Australia. I have tried every where but no one stocks it here. I will have to see if I can make my own.
Great David! I don't know whether your talent is woodturning , video production or both. No, I really do.
You are very talented. Thanks, Charlie
Wow, thanks Charlie!
Very cool, never tried an inside out with only 2 pieces, going to definitely have to give this a try. I think I have some laminate pieces in reds that would look great. Thanks for sharing.
This one choked me up, it was so beautiful. Great trick turning the two pieces together then flipping them.
Thanks John! I appreciate that! This was a super fun experiment. Cheers!
I really enjoyed the outside part and love that blank. I could see a large one of these on display on a shelf or mantle
Thanks Kyle! This was a lot of fun and a good concept to challenge the brain. It was interesting to figure out how far to go on the inside in order to get a tapering effect on the profile. I'll definitely be doing more of this! Cheers!
Excellent work, David! Really like the 2 sided ornament vs the more usual 4 sided. And love the way you suspended the snowman in the center.
Thank you, Jay! I am starting to agree with you there. The two sided designs have a lot of potential for practical items too, like bracelets, pendants, etc... Cheers!
Very impressed . I would love to make some of these for my family , only two problems though ,the first being that I only saw your vid .on Xmas eve. And the second being that I must find a source of the timber here in the. U.K. Looking on the bright side , I’ve got twelve months though . Good work , I look forward to seeing more.
Thanks very much, John! Good luck in your turnings! Cheers and Merry Christmas!
David your orniment is awesome and spectacular I love the skateboard wood you used en the amazing little snowman, it really is stunningly beautiful.
Thanks so much, Kobie! Cheers!
Love, love, love the music, watching you create art is so mesmerising to me. Beautiful to watch. Hi from Australia 🇦🇺
Thanks so much! ✌️
Great, great piece of Art. Watching you creating those jewels is relaxing. Brilliant!
Thanks again, Carlos! I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Hi David...that was a very relaxed and beautifully filmed video....the ornament and Santa are great...I've been trying to get some coloured plywood but couldn't find any...great job...All the best.....Andy
Hey Andy! Thank you so much! Yeah, I had not even heard of frogblanks before, but I'm pretty impressed with the material and options. Cheers!
Take a look at Frogblanks.com and give me know if I can answer any questions cliff@frogblanks.com
I am very pleased with the job David did making our material stand out in his project
Thanks Cliff ...I'm in the UK...seems you only do pen blanks over here...nothing the size David was using
Awwww! I love snowmen! :)
You make such beautiful artwork in wood, thanks for sharing your gifts!
Thank you Karen!
Love, love. Love the wood. Very beautiful. From the UK.
Your 1st video for me to see - totally impressed by not only your skill & techniques, but also by your video production, topped off by the smooth soundtrack which completed the experience.
Have not started turning yet (tho I did a vase form in wood about 50 years ago to mold a copper spinning projuct), I have been learning via these many videos. As a retired jeweler/metalsmith, thought I only wanted to now do larger pieces - bowls, etc., but this may draw me back to smaller sculptural pieces, especially for Christmas. Many Blessings.
Great!
really nice im a sucker for these christmas videos . i love this time of year . you can just feel the magic in the air . this ornament is just part of that . really glad you gave the snow man a top hat cause you know there must have been some magic in that ole silk hat you found . merry christmas my friend merry christmas .
Thanks so much, Dark! It was a lot of fun to make this little guy. Merry Christmas!
Very, very good! Very balanced . Notting too much, Notting less!
Much appreciated!
I’ve been watching your channel for some time now but I’m always mesmerized with the amount of care put into your projects (especially this one). It has inspired me to get into bowl making in my free time. Thanks David!
Thank you so much!
I like the way you put the snow man inside the ring😀
Thanks Tony!
Beautiful Piece, thanks for sharing
Wow what a great looking ornament. Nicely done. The first time i have seen something like that. Thumbs UP.
Thanks Hendrik! Cheers!
Lovely work, David. I wonder how colourfast the plywood is - it would be very sad if those beautiful colours faded after a couple of weeks.
Thanks Robert. That's an interesting point! Time will tell... Cheers!
I think you'll be ok, here's a photo I took this afternoon of some color sample "Pogs" that Cliff turned in October 2018. frogblanks.com/img/2019-12-15%2015.21.33.jpg They have been sitting in my office since then, not in direct sunlight, but not hidden in a drawer either :-)
What an absolutely adorable piece, I'd love to have these on my tree
Thanks Donna! For now, this is a one-of-a-kind, but hopefully I'll have time to do more of that. Cheers! And Merry Christmas!
David wat werk je toch sierlijk. Je danst met het hout. Het is als een meditatie. Het is zo prachtig wat je maakt. 👏
Hartelijk bedankt! Je bent zeer vriendelijk. Houtbewerking moet ontspannend en artistiek zijn! Ik ben zo blij dat je ervan hebt genoten!
Apart from the incredible work you present to us, the combination with this enchanting music is something fantastic !!!! Well done !!!!
Thanks so much!
AAAA the little carrot nose! This piece was just pure love.
This was just awesome! Great job, I really enjoyed watching this video! Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones. I hope you have a great 2020!
Thank you very much! Merry Christmas to you and yours as well! Cheers!
Never seen a 2 piece in side out turning before. I love it
Thank you! It was an exciting experiment, since the curves influence the opposite side differently with just 2 pieces. Cheers!
Very nice work. Maybe late for Last year: Merry Christmas and stay safe.
I enjoyed watching it so much i watched it twice. Even shared it with my mother. Turned out nice. Enjoyed the music too.
Thanks so much, Joy! Cheers and Merry Christmas!
Fantastic turning
Thanks Richard!
Happy newyear to u and your family xxx luv ur vids xx 🏴
Thanks! Happy New Year to you and yours as well!
great video thanks for sharing!
Thanks Jeff! The tape is purely to prevent the two pieces from flying apart. To some degree this was superfluous given the even contact from the steb center and the tail stock. It was a safety precaution at least...
You have a wonderful imagination.
Thank you!
I love finding a channel like this, bc I know this time next year it will be well over 100k subs. Beautiful work as always, and Merry Christmas
Thanks so much! One can only hope! But one week at a time! Cheers!
Very nice idea
Thanks!
Great work David. Colors and shape are beautiful 👌The snowman is funny 😁
Thanks so much, Rav! It was lots of fun to make! Cheers!
Beautiful, beautiful, David!!! I think the proportions are spot on...and that nose! Great job. I hope you had a wonderful and very Merry Christmas with your family!
Thank you! Same to you and Happy New Year!
Watched the video and loved every second of it. Your work and skill is fantastic. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year .
Thanks, Richard! Merry Christmas to you as well!
The video is perfection, professional quality. The music is so soothing and relaxing I almost fell asleep. The ornament is just wonderful, and so creative. You are awesome, David Adamsen..
Thank you so much!
I like it, very nice.
Thanks!
thats very nice David and thanks for the ideal for next year! Keep it going!!!!!!
Thanks Larry!
Very nice. I'm using the same wood and wood from my wood pile to make some ornaments.
Thanks! Very cool and Merry Christmas!
We would like to see pictures when you a finisted cliff@frogblanks.com 🐸
Very nice.
Thanks! Cheers!
This was a beautiful turning. one of the things I learned from another turner is when using the Yorkshire grit is to use the sanding sealer after the Yorkshire grit . This helps on the overall shine. Just thought I'd let you know. Have a wonderful new year.
Thanks Richard for your comment and feedback! I haven’t heard of sanding sealer being used after sanding grit. In my mind the sanding sealer makes the grain stiff enough to smooth evenly and then a wax or shine process begins. I guess the possibilities are endless though...
Love love love it.
As always with your videos, I am transported and transfixed. Perfectly suited music. Great angles for your recording and no missed steps that I could see.
A delightful creation says it all. Arty and still practical.
Merry Christmas sir.
👍🤗🎄🎅🎄🤗👍
Thank you so much! Merry Christmas to you as well!
David.... that was a great job you did all around, and also very unique concept in using the colored spectra plywood. Awesome showcase in your turning abilities, and also how your mind is working. Just truly a beautiful ornament David!!!.. job well done. Your comming along amazingly!!!👍👍👍👍👍

Hey John! Thank you very much! It was a fun turn to try! Merry Christmas to you and yours! Cheers!
Hi John the colored laminated wood is Frogwood not Spectraply. check out our website frogblanks.com or contact me if you have questions cliff@frogblanks.com Happy turning 🐸
One of the best ornaments I e seen on UA-cam. Nice form. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much! Cheers!
That is the cutest ornament I’ve ever seen, and it’s all handmade. Fantastic work! I love these items you make so effortlessly. Bravo!!
Thank you! At least for me it’s not effortless yet. Perhaps someday it will be!
I don’t know what’s better, the craftsmanship or the video editing. Both an art in their own right. You execute taking us through this journey SO BEAUTIFULLY!
If I could have injected my smile into the video when the snowman took a face I would have.
I love this ornament.
Merry Christmas!
Thanks so much, Maimsy! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I look forward to seeing more of your work too! Merry Christmas!
Well done, David. I love everything about this channel.
Thanks so much, Dan!
Peça magnífica, muito delicada.
Parabéns... 👏👏👏👏👏
Muito obrigado!
Thanks I love the color wanted to be sure before ordering.
Thanks TJ. That color is actually called Bluebell, not Tardis. My mistake...
TJ take a look at frogblanks.com and give me a shout if I can answer any additional questions cliff@frogblanks.com 🐸

Ornament looking great 👍
Thanks so much, Chris!
Your talent is off the chart. How do you come up with all that you create. You don’t just make a bowl, you go way beyond that. I love watching your videos. Do you sell you artwork?
Thanks Judy! I do sell on Etsy and should be getting the shop updated this week. Cheers!
Very pretty, very well done.
Thanks again, Bob!
Love it.
You’re a good man.🎄🥰
How can you have ANY dislikes??? This is a great video !
Thanks Stacy, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Cheers!
That looks awesome very nice.
Thanks Allan!
That was very nice. I have saved it for something to make for next Christmas. I really like it. Keep up the good work.
Why wait for next Christmas, Valentine's day is coming up and you could do something similar with a heart in the center. Frogblanks.com
Thanks Terrence! I also have some plans for next Christmas too! Don't want to cram it all in too quickly haha!
Very true, Cliff!
@@cliffstetson4402 I already make inside-out hearts for ornaments. I would be happy to send you the instructions I use in demonstrations, if you want them.
Amazing turn and build.
EXCELLENT!!!@!
Thanks John!
Really awesome work!!👌🏼👌🏼
Thank you, Gavin!
That is beautiful.
Thanks James! Cheers!
David, that is one beautifully filmed video - I hope you don't mind, I embedded it in our Christmas message box right on the front page of FrogBlanks.com! One little thing - that is our Bluebell color - the Tardis color is a combination of Blue, Black, and White (looks a bit like Blue Jay colors). Love how your decoration came out!
Thanks so much, Peter! Sorry about the color name mixup… I'll try to add a card in the video somehow to note that. Cheers!
@@DavidAdamsen Definitely our fault, we just have too many colors :-D - especially now people are ordering their own custom colors! (See the Custom Color Mixer widget on our Colors page)
@@frogblanks5970 I actually love the color customization y'all offer! So many options, and the custom mixer option is something I haven't seen before.
@@DavidAdamsen Thanks, I had a lot of fun making it! But I couldn't have done it without the several pyramid blocks Cliff cut for me.
Thank you 😊
Really enjoyed this video, great job...
Thanks so much! Merry Christmas!
Very cool David, nice job!!
Thanks very much, Jordan!
