As we continue to celebrate 100k, here is a "then and now" of my shellies. they started in a 10g, and ended up in their permanent tank of a 75g. What do you think? Do you like looking back at the various display tanks?

Rachel, you get so much enjoyment from these shellies why would I who doesn't care for them nor live with them expect you to get rid of them?
The only way I would suggest that is if you are ready to move on to another type of fish. 😊 Regardless of the fish you have, I enjoy watching them! 💞
Gate video! I can hear the excitement in your voice when talk about your fish
@Rachel O'leary
I'm using "whales eye" shells for my multies. I got varying sizes from 3/4" up to 2 1/2", with most in the 1 1/2" range. They look more natural with the different sizes and they won't go green like escargot, "land snail", shells do. They are a bit more expensive, but worth every penny!
Love ya girl, keep doing what you do and love!!!
Yay thats neat
It’s nice of you to ask us what we like to see, BUT I think 💭 the more you love the animal the more we do! So my advice is to do what will make you happy 😃
I LOVE when people geek 🤓 out over their animals knowing almost everything there is to know about them! It makes me so much more interested, because you’re so interested in them! Much love ❤️
Agreed.
Watching you talk about your experiences keeping shellies over the years has not only made me aware of a species that I hadn't heard of before, but made me almost certain that my next tank will be stocked with these guys. They seem so full of personality and I can't wait to spend hours watching my own grouping develop once I get them.
Thank you so much for sharing.
Im soooo happy you didn't quit the hobby 🤗😊
Keep the shellies. They are really fun but I do appreciate what Joey is doing by changing things up to keep us learning new things. So there's a good argument for that as well. I personally learn a ton from you and truly appreciate it. Still waiting for membership option.
I love the shellies, keep them!!
The time travel videos are turning out very cool. They give a great idea for folks to see what needs their little fish may need in the future when they continue to grow or multiply, as well as how to update tanks for the fish's changing needs. The only problem I have with them is that I'm going to go bonkers when I finally get a place with space for more than a single 5 gallon tank - how to decide which fish to get without overwhelming my ability to take care of them all. But one thing's for sure - your videos & species highlights will help me make much clearer decisions. You rock.
It's obvious how fond you are of those Shellies so keep them 😊
Great chronology of their evolution in your systems. Thanks for sharing Rachel.
"livin' their best shellie life"
So glad you still have a colony of Shellie's! I've been spyinging on your multies for two years and hope to order some up from you in the future.
Those fish are little stunners.
You keep inspiring me to continue In this hobby ,
"Shit!"- Love the organic flow of your videos even the bloopers.
Love your then and now series
Heal well my friend
I can see that you love keeping these little guys. I enjoy seeing them, too. Its a unique approach to fish keeping. I think you should keep on trucking!
I love these fish, and look forward to watching the tank and it’s population evolve.
Rachel stick with your heart, you love shellies so no contest.

Seeing this growth makes me want to continue with my tanks, Thanks Rachel! ❤️❤️
I LOVE these shellies and it's all because of YOU Rachel!!! If I were ever going to try cichlids, the multi shellies are what I'd want! They are so freaking cute! And they nest in shells! And they spit sand! How could I not love that??? I hope you keep them. That green on the shells reminds me of the patina that develops on copper as it ages. Weird.
I love these Evolution history videos...it really helps those interested in them to see what they can achieve in their tanks.
The tank has certainly evolved over the years for the better, It looks great!
As long as YOU are still enjoying the shellys you should keep them. I really like them. In fact a few weeks ago I was at Wet Spot in Portland Oregon and saw some. I haven't been able to get them out of my mind. So I am seriously comsidering going back and buying then. I have a 29 gallon that would be perfect.
I absolutely love these videos and seeing how your aquariums evolve over time. Thank you.
I've been wanting to keep these guys for a while now I just dont have the room. I will have to live vicariously through you Rachel. Good video keep up the good work
Oh... The Synodontis and the Cyps are beautiful as well!
Cheers,
Chris
Thanks for the update Rachel. Nice Lemonade.
Yes continue. Love these guys!!
Love the Shellies! I hope you keep the group going.
I think it's pretty neat to have you explain so much then have a chunk of the video just of the fishies... I'm not in the hobby but you and Joey have such passion and enthusiasm and knowledge that I'm always glad to see what YOU guys come up! Your text on the video really, really helps! Thank you for adding in the words when they're appropriate. LOL im a sucker for babies in all shapes and forms so to see them grow would be my choice instead of moving on?
Love the shell dwellers 😍
Thanks for making videos they teach me alot about how to give fish the best life they can have
I think you should do what you want, not necessarily what viewers want, because you will be more passionate about it and that's what makes for a good video.
It makes it more enjoyable for you to produce the videos as well.
Thanks for sharing
Great then and now video
Good to see before you do changes to the tank
Shells are small but from my experience too The more space they have the better they do and breed
Love your shellies! Thank you for sharing them with us.
I am new to your channel and look forward to your informative posts ....... so for me the then and now series gives me a look at how your aquariums have changed and grow. 👍👍
I have been seeing these fish all over lately. I've sent a few people asking questions to this channel for info. I think you should keep doing these fish as they seem to be becoming more "popular" or more widely available and people will need info. And damn you have great footage with all those fry, nice. (man I want those sardine cichlids though).
As always, GREAT Video !!...especially the historical comparisons. Keep 'em coming.
My favorite tank! I would be sad to see them go but would understand if you do to make room for something new. Concerning the change of decor I wounded if the would enjoy a few of those huge seed pods you have. Ty for your videos!
Please keep the Shellies. They are so adorable and are a lot of fun to watch. I'm interested in buying 6-8 to start my colony if and when your ready to sell.
I’d love to see you continue with them.
Love these species! I aspire to Shellie’s, and have fallen in love with the beautiful sardine cichlids!
I am getting this type of shell dwellers today I am so excited
Loving all your hard work. Thank you for sharing everything with us 😍
I love the Shellie's!
0:48 seconds - Demonetised Haha.
Great video as per!
hahaha
She whispered it so softly they musta missed it! Ads still running =D
😂 it’s a good job I’m not a UA-camr, I’d starve to death! My language could make an entire Navy blush 😂😂
That was totally an air leak!
Great video😁🐟
I love these fish. Keep working with them!!! I’m sad that there’s only two sardine cichlids in this tank as I really enjoy them.
I like the looks back idea. It gives us long term perspective as to how these different tanks evolve. Fishkeeping isn’t a set it and forget it hobby.
Also just where does one get shells like that?
Love all your videos! I'm a sucker for small fish in big tanks, so I say absolutely keep working with these guys. I've been considering getting some myself. I actually really love the color these shells turned into as well! Looking forward to more of your then and now update videos. :)
Nice! I have group of them. Fun to keep.
I LOVE the shellies!! :)
great choice of music! :D love it!
Love these fish you inspired me to start my own colony of Multis! I would love to see an update.
Honestly, i am not a fan of those shell dwellers. But i think you shall continue to keep them because you seem to enjoy them a lot. That is always a reason to continue, even though some people might not like it ;) Sometimes you need to do what's best for you. :)
I think you should keep doing shelly fish. You do so well with them.
Thank you so much
Those are cool fish!
I love it. Please keep it going.👍✌️💯
Just do what you enjoy doing, you are never going to please everybody and you're just chasing your tail once you start down that road. If some people aren't interested in what you do there are plenty of other channels they can watch instead. You will attract people who like your approach, there are 112K of us so far and the number is growing.
I love ur videos they r so educative. When I’m watching it I feel like freaking newbie in fishkeeping tbh. Keep on going with ur videos it helps me so much with everything and just hope u have a nice day there and loads of fry haha!! ❤️❤️
Good video to watch after coming home from the big fish deal and getting some new shellies from one of the stands there! You should definitely get a hold of some neolamprologus ocellatus and bring back the species spotlight!
love this tank i would love to get some of those multies when you get back to shipping!
Enjoyed this Then and Now update. With this reproductive rate, I wonder how long it will take for the tank to reach capacity of these little guys? I’m guessing not for a while, it’s a big tank! Love those sardine cichlids in there as well! Beautiful colouring. ❤️
Yes pls! Continue but also try something new like other wild betta species or other stiphodon species like the blue neon goby for the hillstream or maybe a community tank of rasboras like the neon greens or the neon blues or maybe give the betta sorority another try? Anyway whatever it maybe we’ll look forward to it!
I agree. maybe try the betta sorority again. I would love to do that myself
Why do people feel that they have to move on from a species that they are successful with? I have friends that rarely keep a species for more than a few months. I also have a friend who keeps fish for decades! One species since 1982! Guess who's fish keeping skills I'm most impressed with. Keep your shellies Rachel. They are great!
Cheers,
Chris
Hi Rachel, what is it that makes the shells turn green like that? It’s actually a pretty colour if you enjoy aquariums that aren’t scaped to look completely natural. They’re definitely unusual.
As to whether you should keep them or move on; I think that you should do what makes you happy and what you enjoy doing because that is what makes you want to keep making videos and what makes people want to keep watching them. 😊
I would love to buy some of your fish, thank you for keeping what you do best, sometime bad things happen!!
lots of small shellys :)
Cichlids❤
Nice!!!
If enjoy them, keep them. One thing I like about your fish room is that you keep fish long enough to mature and live out their lives.
The multi's are my fav little shellie! If your looking for a little more challenging shellie look for lamprologus ocellatus they are a little bit on the feisty side and not a colony breeder like the multi's>
I like your videos and seeing how you maintained it! Definitely keep these fish, although I really want to know more about sardine cichlids.
Please keep the Multies -- it's half the reason I subscribed to your channel! :D Okay not half. But they ARE the reason I bought multies♥
Was looking back at some of your videos. Just ordered some of these. Supposed to arrive tomorrow. I hope mine do well. Hope you and your family are ok. Take care 🙂 💕
Thanks Terry! They are great fish! You can get the escargot shells on Amazon, boil them though as they are not always very clean
I love the Shellie’s. What other species can be kept with them? I have one fifty five gallon tank and would love to stock it with Shellie’s and a few other fish.
Shiitttt... Amazing!
Not a cichlid fan myself but I really wanna try shellies
Definitely keep them going! I really enjoy these fish and I feel like they are just uncommon or maybe just not popular enough that most people don’t get an opportunity to see them. What are your theories on why the shells are turning green? Are they plastic? Or are they natural shells and that’s just what happens as they decay over time?
will the catfish predate on fry at all? Julies would look amazing in that rock pile but might force the cats out. Multi - cyps - juli is a pretty common setup to fill every zone in the tank. it looks good especially in bigger tanks like that massive 75g. Now I am gonna have to fight that itch lol
@SininStyle
I have a 40 breeder with multies, Julies and lucies. Yes, the lucipinnis will predate fry of both the others, but that just helps keep the populations in check and I don't have to "rehome" fish all the time. Nature at its best!
I adore the NeoMulti's, and it's fantastic to see their development and growth by looking at old footage (be great to see others too).
A little question: for my own reference (because I must get shelleys), do you think there'd be probs with limited genetic diversity given they breed like rabbits and if so, would it be a good idea to thin the school and introduce fresh/new shelley's from time to time to broaden the genetics?
I also have to say the Ciprochromis(?) sardine cichlids are a perfect match and are looking stunning.
*Edit: I love seeing the babies, they make me smile and make silly giggle noises. lol
Love this tank. Maybe try and get some more sardine cichlids otherwise it's great how it is.
Hi Rachel,
Do those catfish not eat the babies? Great video. I like to see you grow fish to adult and breed before you focus on new species but variety is great too. Thanks to your videos I have been able to get Hillstream Loaches, CP Danios, Pygmy Corys and Bumblebee Gobies. These are species I would have never known to ask my lps to bring in without your videos. I love watching these fish interact and my family and friends are amazed by the diversity in my tanks. Everyone has seen an Oscar but not everyone has seen gobies and hillstream loaches. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience.
keep workin with them plz .am trying so hard to find theses fish ,
Love the info and tank. I have several tanks but I’m branching out into shellies. The rest of my tanks are planted and controlled by me. I’m looking forward to relinquishing control to the fish to create their own world!
I am curious though. Are you replacing the shells just because they are “ugly” or do they pose a health hazard for the fish?
I wish I could find these! I want them so badly but just cant find them
Do you think I can keep a group of cyprichromis leptosoma blue Flash in a 55 gallon aquarium
I think you should put a second tank of gold shell dwellers in your fish room,, and keep the ones you have.
0:46 I caught that! lol
0:47 😃
Another comment from me ye xxddd. Idk if u ever done that but I’m really interested in how would u maintain a tank with almost no need to change anything in it. Full sustainable tank with loads of species that can sustainable themselves
Hehe. I giggled when the camera went wonky.
..shit...
Lol
hi, what brand and model of lighting is on this tank?
I've heard that they don't need a ton of vertical room and that the footprint of your tank is more important. However, they do seem to be enjoying the vertical space in that tank, and based on the videos in the wild it seems like the "group venturing upwards" behavior is typical. Do they use all of their vertical space, or would getting a low long tank like 1foot high and 3 feet long make more sense?
I'm not very familiar with cichlids in general. Bit I have been researching the multis for a while now. Did you say the top water fish is a sardine cichlid? Are they any other cichlids that use the top half of the aquarium and would be a good pairing with the multis? I have a 55gal that I just picked up and seeing this video just made up my mind! Thank you for sticking with UA-cam thru all of your ups and downs and making a big impact on the vast majority of your subs. Me included😁
thank you! as far as the cichlids go, the sardine cichlids or herring cichlids are best suited to not eat the fry and fit in a 55g. If you are not concerned with keeping them from teh same region and sticking with cichlids as tankmates, then a lot of folks really like to add rainbows, or even danios forthe topwater region of a shellie aquarium.
Are the original multis still there ?
Do the cat fish prey on the fry ?
hi, what light brand is on this tank?
I thought this was the tank that broke and they all died? Guess I’m wrong- glad to see they’re all doing well!
That was my sumbus, paracyps, and cyps :(
I am so sad that this tank is no longer around. It super sucks.
I think that after the fishroom shuffle a new 75g of these guys would be incredible.
Its around. the other 75g lake tang tank broke
@@RachelOLeary oh phew!! I'm so glad it's not this one. Not sure how I got them confused. Lol
