Nearly a year afterwards, and this is still a great tour. So many great shellies that I didn't even know existed. ...but what I really want to know is if Chris now has a 17 year old puffer. So amazing! What a great tour!
Nice. Any tips on breeding these guys. Have 7 for about a year with no breeding. I may have too many males so I separated some that I think are males. Who does most of the diffing is it the males or females or both? Any advice is greatly appreciated thanks
@@carlosnavas7070 I got 6 similis on a 60x30x30 cm aquarium. I made 3 spots of shells with some stuff in between to pre-form territories. It was about 1-2 years ago, there have been fights among males, one jumped out of the cuve, later another was standing all the time submissively hiding behind the filter, I killed him. For now my colonie looks fine, with a very big dominant male, 5 seems to be females but there may be 1 or 2 little males and 5 babies of different size. They reproduce very often but the population stay at 10-12, I guess the boss may eat the babies, that's ok its a small aquarium 11 or 12 similis is the maximum they want to be. Someday a new male will challenge the boss and be ejected, or the boss may die, ou they may go along, that's the pleasure to be a similis owner, you never knows but it all turns well in the end. My advice : watch them, and if a fish need to go, let him go.

He and several other great fish breeders regularly attend the local fish club meetings. If you want to learn about fish and have access to neat species, I'd highly recommend attending.
Hey just wanted to comment that my green spotted puffer is 12 years old. Found your video trying to find the oldest one :) Mine also has never had his teeth trimmed. I keep a few nitrate snails in his aquarium, they are large and clean the tank and he does scratch his teeth on them. I feed bloodworms mostly, and shrimp. Congrats man! 16 is crazy!!

The ones in my fish room are called "Breeding House XL" but I don't think they make them anymore. Fluval also make them called "Hang-On Breeding Box". I think you can get them off Amazon

I'd like to have 2 species in there, not two shell dwellers, but maybe a shell dweller species and then a rock dweller for the rock pile, or some other cichlid. What combination do you think would work? I'd like to have some nice color also, or behavior that makes up for it. Thanks!
@@rifraf6135 Yeah you will be able to have shell dwellers and rock dwellers in a tank that size. If you want colour in your shellies, I'd suggest Lamprologus Ocellatus Gold. Then, if you want colour in your rock dwellers, you could then also get Neolamprologus Leleupi. If you also want something in the mid water then you could get some Leptosoma as well, that would be a very colourful tank AND have lots of interesting behaviour. If you don't want shellies as agro as Ocellatus, you could always try Multies or the more striking Neolamprologus Similis, they may lack colour but are very interesting fish to watch.
My water is hard I think on the 8.0~ range do you think I should get shell dwellers? I was thinking of setting a South American Community Tank but I think their color shine in soft water which means I would spend a significant amount of time (and money) chasing numbers and would definitely remove the fun in the hobby for me. Quality content here!! 👌
Most South and Central American cichlids will thrive in hard/alkaline water. They might not breed well in it, but they will be healthy, happy, and beautiful. However, Rift Lake cichlids, like shell dwellers, LOVE hard/alkaline water and breed in it just fine.
