In real life, Ida was not the haughty gold digger that she is depicted to be in this film, nor was Lucille a clingy, controlling, overly anxious wife. They each were, respectively, Stan’s and Babe’s soulmates, their perfect matches, and this film does nothing to show why they were so. Considering how they are far more obscure than their husbands in the script of history, it’s a shame the filmmakers chose to depict them as cartoonish stereotypes rather than make an effort to depict the real women who kept Stan and Babe going, and saved them from years of misery, loneliness, and horrific marriages.
