This movie is a masterpiece. It is a magic view into the world they were living in so long ago. From the first moment, I feel I have gone back in time. I forgot this was a movie, and I forgot that the people were actors. I think this movie works so well because it shows the duality of those two men.... How intelligent and serious they were about their craft, and how they could instantly become their personas and perform. And finally the love they had for each other throughout the years... Through their fame, aging, and realization that even they were finite. Bravo to the actors of this movie, as it will be watched as a historical movie for many years...
Masterpiece is the right word!
John C. Reilly really was stunningly like Oliver Hardy. Hope he gets an Oscar nomination.
I cried when watching this movie, my Dad died last year and Laurel and Hardy were his favourite film stars, he would have loved this film.
Grew up on Laurel & Hardy. The likeness to them is uncanny and looking forward to seeing this :)

I am no movie critic, but will say that I enjoyed this film. However, I am not quite sure I can pinpoint what it was that was so enjoyable.
It just made me happy.

Maybe it was enjoyable because it was well written, acted and produced and maybe it made you feel happy because you very rarely see nice, caring compassionate characters on screen any more
Went to see it earlier today. Have to say it was fantastic.
The acting by both was flawless and Nina Arianda and Shirley Henderson were fantastic as their wives.. they matched up terrifically. Together the whole film made me feel happy and it was just great!
Loved the film tears of laughter and sadness. The boys did the lads justice with mannerisms and synchronisity and we'll just all of it. And as for the wives they were brilliant. Gonna watch it again. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
A beautiful film where Stan & Ollie are portrayed to perfection by Steve Coogan & John C Reilly. I did however leave the cinema feeling great sadness that my favourite comedy duo were hawking their show round the smaller theatres in the UK in the end. Their desperation to secure one more movie was heartbreaking to watch. Irrespective of my sadness, it's a wonderful movie that all Laurel & Hardy fans will adore. Go see it!
I genuinely believe that they were just happy to make their fans happy. The movie implies the tour starts at Newcastle - but I believe it was actually Northampton. If that's the case, not sure why the movie would change that fact.
Not at all..the U.K. has been the home of comedy for the last fifty years...just imagine, a young Eric Idle or a young John Cleese could have been in one of those small theatres watching L and H.
I see what you mean. But it might help to know that Laurel and Hardy were idolised everywhere they went in the UK, during that time; and were really bowled over and thrilled by how people remembered and loved them. Even in Ireland, in Cork, the church bells rang out 'the Cuckoo March' on their behalf while the streets were thronged just to catch a glimpse of them. To know towards the end how loved they were by so many must've been a great thing for them.

@@terrythekittie "Hawking" wasn't the right word on reflection. It's more accurate to say that given their age, Ollie's health & the physical demands of travel at that time, it was like watching a aging boxer taking on that one last fight he shouldn't. I found that sad but I know that the love of their fans would have been what kept them going.
the beauty of this movie is.......it will make "younger" people go back to watch the original duo...

Lovely film. Everybody should go and see it especially at this time. Shows no matter how much the Chips are down your love, laughs and loyalty will get you through it. RIP to the loveliest, funniest and most genuine Comedy duo ever.
It made me cry listening to his review. Timeless comedy from the two most charismatic double acts there has ever been. Simply beautiful.
What's beautiful about this wonderful tribute to them is that you'll go off and watch some original L & H films, or re-watch them in a fresh light. Superb!
Just got back from watching this, loved it the whole way through. Fantastic film, beautifully done
Steve Coogan was brilliant, not just at nailing the naïveté of Stan Laurel’s onscreen persona, but he really nailed that driven, creative spark to the man. And Reilly was an absolute delight and so endearing, as were the wives - brilliant bickering act. Honestly on the whole I thought it was a fairly predictable and formulaic affair, but the performances were all rather grand.
Two peas in a pod. Belongs in the canon as a lovenote epilogue. It transported me to another time. Haven't felt like this since I saw The Cavern tribute band when I thought (being a bit drunk) I WAS watching The Beatles play live. Love love loved it.
Just a pity that Hollywood had to manufacture tension between Stan and Ollie, when the truth was just as entertaining. There was never a sense of betrayal when Ollie made a film without Stan. These guys were model professionals who loved and respected each other throughout their careers together. Stan was involved in the technical side of the business whilst Ollie took a more relaxed approach away from camera. They NEVER argued in public.
Spot on, that argument in the movie, never happened, in the movie, Stan and Ollie are arguing about Ollie doing the film Zenobia with Harry Langdon, in real life Stan actually sent Ollie a telegram to wish him good luck with the movie

BRYAN BELSHAW movies are fiction, you are on a hiding to nothing expecting accuracy from a movie theatre. They should be entertaining, that’s their sole purpose.
@@MitzyAndSadie Fair enough but if you read my initial post I did state that the truth in this case was just as entertaining. They had no need to change it for any purpose.
BRYAN BELSHAW movie goers expect dramatic tension, that’s a good enough reason. If the starting premise is ‘take everything you see with a healthy dose of salt’ then it’s more satisfying than a film about two people who never had a cross word
So glad Mark liked this, I've been looking forward to seeing this ever since I saw the first (wonderful) trailer!
Really looking forward to seeing this tonight. I grew up watching my dads L&H vhs tapes and watching all their movies with my grandma so they have such an emotional attachment for me. I will say though, most die hard L&H fans know that this 'rift/betrayal' is partly fabricated and and exaggerated for film purposes really, yes hal roach kept them on separate contracts and yes ollie mate seperate movies such as the fighting kentuckian with john wayne but stan was never bitter about it, it is know stan sent ollie telegrams congratulating him on the movies etc, so the 'argument' and betrayal portrayed in this movie is done for movie purposes because in reality they really were the perfect couple, so with no tension there wouldn't be much to the movie. Im glad to hear it focuses more on their admiration friendship and love for each other though. There will never be another pairing like these two again.
As a dave young reading this, your comments resonate with me. I havent seen the film yet, but I love Stan and Ollie and both the lads playing them. I hope it gets the reception it deserves dave.

I saw it myself last week I think. Had to see it, a movie about the greatest comedy duo ever, Laurel and Hardy. I think it started a bit slow, but that could have been me settling into it. It was hilarious and most importantly, touching. Spot on. Yes, I did shed tears at the end and am proud to say so. Well worth it. Amazing how it took so long to make a film about these guys.
I almost had an aneurysm trying to hold back my sobbing! What a film.

Great performances all round
I've been a huge fan of Laurel & Hardy since I was a kid in the 50s and have watched their films all my life over and over. I saw "Stan & Ollie" last night and absolutely LOVED it! Amazing acting by all, a terrific script, and great attention to detail in every possible artistic area. Also, found it very emotionally moving throughout. I thought it would be quite good - but never imagined it would be THIS good!!
I cannot tell what this movie is (it’s comedy nor drama, biography nor documentary) but I can tell it is a trip in first gear through the last performing years of two beautiful entertainers with hearts of gold. It was very recognizable for people in show business and heartfelt throughout. An ode to these legends.
It also very much reminded me of the quality BBC has been known for, even though I know British people complain about the BBC of today. This was good old quality akin to The Singing Detective or Robin The Hooded Man.
It makes me long for another film the BBC could make: the life of Sister Rosetta Tharpe and her comeback in England making her a musical legend and spawning modern rock.
I sincerely hope that if they would make a film out of her story they ask none other than Rrrrrrruby Turner because she has such a powerful voice too.
But I digress.

Seen this film twice once on the big screen and at home. It’s a lovely take on a period of there life that I think not many people will no about. Coogan and Riley are superb and the last scene before the end of the movie moved me to tears. It’s feel good, it’s sad just a lovely lovely film.

I saw this movie this evening. It’s a fabulous bit of cinema history. Both Reilly and Coogan are magnificent. I loved them growing up. To see them on stage. Being absolutely funny without saying a word bought back so many childhood memories, sat in front of our old black and white tv, watching two of the funniest men in comedy ever. Today’s so called comics can’t come close.
This review has made my mind up for me - off to the flicks i go!

It's a beautifully crafted film, full of charm and so endearing and leaves you with a warm glow inside.Coogan and Reilly play the legendary duo with a warmth and realism that is both moving and celebratory.l would highly recommend it ...it's a bittersweet story full of heart and soul , and a fitting tribute to the memory the comedy geniuses......loved it
Hope the blu ray version comes with a black and white 4*8 grainy version.

I really liked Mark's summing up of this great movie! I watched it on Saturday afternoon at our local Odeon, and was delighted to get away from the madness of 'this world' for just a brief 100 minutes! Must say, I'll have to watch it again soon, due to missing so much because of all the laughing and crying I did all the way through! What a wonderful film, depicting my favorite comedy duo!
Lovely film and I felt like applauding at the end. I've never seen so many people watch the credits at the end of a film.

Unfortunate the movie has such a limited opening. It should have opened everywhere. I hope I get to see it. Might have to wait for DVD.

Thought it was great and the two leads perfectly cast. The double doors scene is done like a ballet.
It's a great film and a beautiful tribute to, arguably, the greatest double act of all time (arguably as I grew up on Tom & Jerry also!). Kermode - as always - is spot on with his review, picking out aspects that I hadn't even considered, only to be reminded again what a great film this is...

A friend of mine - he’s approaching 90 now, worked as a youngfella in a Dublin restaurant back in the 50’s. Stan and O. were appearing in the adjacent Olympia Theatre and so they were in having a meal. As my friend tells it, there were revolving doors between the kitchen and the dining area. A waiter leaves the kitchen carrying a tray with several bowls of soup, but coordination wasn’t this best, and he gets hit from behind by one of the doors. Waiter/ tray/ bowls of soup end up on the floor. The maître d’, upon seeing this, charges down the length of the restaurant, and it was clear to all, that the waiter was finished. But a man gets up from his table, walks over to the scene of the crash, and starts helping the waiter. And smiling at both the waiter and the maître d’, he said: you know, I get paid an awful lot of money for doing what you’ve just done, but I’ve never seen it done as well as this. And Stan made a point of smiling at the maître d’ again, his coded message: leave-this-man-alone. Class act. And that was a great, great movie.
I can't wait to see it I grew up on laural and hardy I remember flying dueces was the first one I seen back in the mid 90s
I loved it, thought it was a warm and gentle film with a great feel good factor. One issue I do have though is, when are film makers going to sort out continuity? As a born Londoner I can tell you that the scene on the train crossing the Thames and looking at Tower Bridge is soooooo wrong. The next bridge down river is London Bridge and that is not a railway bridge, so where were they supposed to be? It happens time and time again in films featuring London scenery. Mary Poppins was particularly bad as was the opening scenes in the Hitman's Bodyguard. Sort it out, we're not stupid!!!
Robin - Yes and Ne Je Regrette Rien wasn't written until 1956. Hardy could not have quoted it.
The original and the best. Ask any comedian, comic actor or comic partnership who has influenced them the most, and their answer will be Laurel and Hardy.
Morecambe and Wise said it repeatedly. When they were uncomfortable with comedy sketches that had the two comedians sharing a double bed together, the writer reminded them that if it was good enough for Stan and Ollie, it was good enough for Eric and Ernie.
@@frglee Someone once asked Eric Morecambe what he thought they would be if they were not comedians. Quick as a flash he replied "Mike and Bernie Winters!" Classic!

We agree with everything Mark said. It was the best bio-pic we've seen bar none. Full of laugher and pathos in equal measure. Well cast and well acted by everyone.

My grandad and my Mother were living near the cafe where Stan and Oli had a after show party one night......they kept him awake all night so he went outside and started up his Triumph motorbike and just kept revving it hahahah
Just back from watching this. It's a great movie, a great story, with sad parts and the acting is outstanding. You can imagine the real Laurel & Hardy there when it's the actors. If you haven't seen it yet - do!

Saw this movie twice and absolutely loved it. I was nervous that this might be a Hollywood hit piece, bringing negativity into a story about two comedy giants and was pleasantly surprised. Stan and Ollie is a lovely tribute to the boys, who were brilliantly portrayed realistically. If you enjoyed the pair, please see this movie!

Probably the best film I've seen since Pride. It was superb. I genuinely couldn't fault the film at all, except that it had to end.
Thoroughly enjoyed the movie as an examination of how the two men interacted (rather than as a historically accurate documentary). One puzzling scene for me, though, was when Oliver Hardy was in the jeweller's store and made up a story about not being able to afford the bracelet. This suggested he had expensive tastes but not the income to match that. That theme appeared suddenly and wasn't developed. A surprisingly clumsy way of alluding to this, I felt. I only nitpick as the rest of the movie was of such a high standard. 9.5/10.

I've just managed to see this film and it is magnificent, love it, love it, love it!! I am a big fan of John C Reily, but I think sometimes Steve Coogan can be a little irritatating and grating - but in this case he was superb.
Stan and Ollie were happy for each others success. No jealousy involved but this is the movies, why should truth get in the way?
I saw the movie here in USA, it's great. You end up really cheering for them in your heart. But they deserved more, while they were alive. They practically reinvented slapstick and comedy for the talkies, and created the two most lovable and recognizable characters the entire world. Their type of humor transcended language barriers and time. Kids who see one of their film shorts for the first time still laugh like hell. Especially the Music Box. You'd think after all this time has passed they would award their descendants a lifetime achievement, as a comedy team. Yes there was the Music Box Academy Award, and Stan Laurel's honorary Oscar for comedy pioneering in film in 1961. But never for the team. It's at least high time for a lifetime achievement this award for them. In my opinion, comedians like Will Ferrell, Jerry Lewis, or Peter Sellers and many others would not have had a career or at least the same one, if it weren't for Laurel and Hardy setting the standard along with Chaplin and Keaton and a few others. They would probably have a boring job like President or Congress or Parliament (just kidding) or something. Well, there seems to be a lot of comedians running the governments anyway. "Isn't that right Stanley?" "It certainly is, Ollie...say Ollie, what are we talking about anyway?"

I really hope this film doesn't bomb...I keep an eye on it in Wiki...As a fan of stan and ollie...I have been to Ulverston and to Stans grave in LA...the Hal Roach site and the 'Perfect day' house (you can check that out on Google earth too...its almost unchanged)...and of course the Magic Box steps...Big fan here
I live in Bishop Auckland in the UK, and Stan's house that he grew up in is at the bottom of my street. Also he has a lovely statue on the site of one of his father's theatres and also his old school is in the middle of being rebuilt after a fire there a while back. =)
It's doing really well at the cinema. I loved it and it's had great reviews from pretty much everyone who's seen it 😀
