Aluminum Gate Build... I won't make another one | JIMBO'S GARAGE

- I wanted to make an aluminum gate for my backyard, but think this will be the last time I make one out of aluminum. It ended up being about double the price, which wasn't the biggest issue, this thing was very hard to keep square because of all the heat distortion. Perhaps a tig gun would have made this easier but the amount of heat made this more difficult than it was worth. The end result was nice but I will still with regular steel.

Nice job looks amazing
I've learned a lot watching your videos
The upside to aluminum- it doesn't rust like steel eventually will. Looks great!!
Cuts and drills fast, I tell you what!
Very nice job Jimbo. Fab On. Weld On
Good build! Aluminum is a type of metal though, as is steel. A common mistake I hear a lot as a fabricator myself, people using the words steel and metal interchangeably as if aluminum is not metal. But good work none the less! Keep it up!
Also, like Jimbo stated, aluminum DOES corrode/oxidize, unless it’s anodized, that would make it more durable.
@@peteryeung111 what’s that gotta do with anything?
@@peteryeung111 As far as I know, aluminum oxidizes forming a white-ish, very hard layer which is quite tough to remove and prevents further oxidation of the material.
So, if you want to call it corrosion (I don't), it's limited to the very first layer and it's more like a paint film; plus if you scratch the film it recreates automatically!😉
I dont recall him saying that it wasnt a type of metal?
A friend of mine used to work for a aluminum distributor so I was able to get a large quantity for the same price as steel. Welded a 25ft fence. Took a long time and Many bottles of argon
That little clap 👏 after figuring out how to get the ginger tacked in place! 😂
Nice work as usual Jim!
Another great job Jimbo👍
Looks fantastic great job as always 👍👍
Nice job Jimbo 😊
what a lovely gate nice one👍
Great video.
Good job Jimbo,s grage
Insetad of using a fixed spacer and then adjusting measurements with the last few pickets, I find it better to measure the complete length, and use the amount of pickets, width of pickets to determine how big the space should be.
Sick! Now do one with the 26 series mig gun
Jim,
Why did you choose not to use spreader bars to keep your horizontal frame rails parallel, rather than trim the pickets?
Why not just use the aluminum mig welder??
Yeah, a spool gun would have been quicker. Good practice doing it TIG, though.
Spool gun would definitely eliminate a lot of time.
👍👍
Nice job ! Jimbo, how do you like the invertig 301 ?
😍
Ive got a13 ft double swing wooden gate which Ive built and rebuilt 3 times in the past 2 years due to high winds. Last time it ripped the entire gate off the fence and left only the part that the hinges were attached to. Im planning on building a metal gate to replace it. Im planning on using 2" square tube is 16G thick enough or should I go with 14G steel?
Hello, great vid, as always!. Doesn't the HTP Propulse weld aluminum without a push/pull?
Yes a push pull is only for a long distance. Its an option vs spool gun.
How much was the aluminum materials cost? I want to build a 24ft aluminum rolling gate as my first real welding and gate because it’s light weight around the kids and pedestrians. I don’t want heavy steel to accidentally fall in them. I have very limited of skill and welders I know it’s cost a lot to start with aluminum
❤️👍💐
Very nice work on those AluminumWelds Jimbo ! MyGrandparents had another method for keeping the Grand children doing what we were supposed to do and not do they just Openened Cans Of Whoop Ass !
They would break out the Fly-Back paddle or a section of Hot Wheels track. Ouch!
Can’t you weld your short pieces of filler rod to a full piece so zero waste? I do this with my silfoss I use in brazing in my hvac work.
Nope
A good way to do the picket would have been to use round bar and cut them about 1/2 inch longer than you need and lay out your top and bottom frame sections and drill holes just a bit oversize and then you just slide one end in and then the other and one you had them all in you cold have tacked all the bottom and the gone over and tacked all the top.
