Tour de France 2022: Which smart trainers do they use?

- Here's your behind-the-scenes look in the team warm-up area at Tour de France 2022 and which smart trainers each of the teams uses.
When it comes to the massive logistical challenge that is transporting a team and all their cycling gear across 21 stages and four countries for the 2022 Tour de France, one perhaps unexpected bit of gear is their smart trainers. Each time brings a slate of trainers with them, and in some cases, multiple types of trainers - and often enough for all riders, depending on the year/stages.
That was certainly the case this past weekend at the Tour de France when opening stage was an individual time trial, as it often is. That means that each rider typically warms up on a smart trainer ahead of that stage for perhaps 25-40 minutes, before competing the relatively short 13KM stage. This will play out again later in the Tour de France on the 2nd to last stage, where a much longer 40.7km individual time trial is set to happen. There are no team time trials this year (unfortunately, they make for spectacular photos).
As is often the case for many years, I’ve outlined which trainers and power meters each team uses, as well as lots of interesting little trainer tidbits along the way. For this post, we’ve got the trainers up first. I’m skipping the bike power meters on today’s post, because power meters on time trial bikes are very often different than their road bikes they use for the rest of the Tour (which accounts for like 99% of the milage). Same goes for bike computers and such. More on that later.

Next year I want an episode on washers and dryers alone - which are the most reliable, what brands are used, what detergent etc
Thanks Ray.. Great insight to the behind the scenes washing machines of the TdF.. Surely with all the save the world stuff going on, we should have those riders attaching their trainers to the washing machine.. 🤔 See who can sustain an 800rpm rinse cycle for the longest.. 😀
Haha...a fun transfer/rest day test!
Exactly! You KNOW those guys could generate enough electricity to run that motorhome!
The vibrations in the spin cycle that’ll prep them for Roubaix
"Which smart trainers do they use" The ones that they are given by their sponsor.
So awesome to be there and behind the scenes! Thanks for all you do, your content is so helpful and makes it easier to make informed purchases. So fun! :)
Yeah, my Elite Suito smart trainer is still a very capable one then. I still think this isn’t probably the top of the range trainer but by far the sexiest and prettiest. Thanks for the behind the scenes Tour de France showdown. Great content as usual.
Thanks for giving this type of insight!
Amazing behind the scene information , thoroughly enjoy your reviews on road cycling equipment , I actually use your in depth reviews to buy items to enhance my cycling hobby.
Keep up the great work 👍🏾.
Excellent behind the scenes, never knew I wanted to see this. Thanks!
Thanks!!
Loved to see this video 🤩
nice one Ray, hope ur doing this all tour 👊🙏 ps more laundry machines please 😂
Cool video! Thx
The three day prior to the TT were glorious, so of course the heavens opened up.... 🌧 Thanks for the look at the ancillary equipment Ray.
Indeed, it was so nice till TT day!
Is nice to see what happens behind, thanks for sharing
Thanks!!!
thanks, very interesting. Great 👍 Amazing to see all the technic and organization and equipment.
Do you plan to do some more videos during the TdF?
Love your work Ray. Enjoy the Tour
Thank you 🙏
Awesome video, love the washing machine touch
great video Ray. Brilliant perspective on a topic no one thought about. How did you get access like that ? From Ray
GoPro should bring a new mini cam Session, would be nice!
Thanks for the nice behind the scene review!
Have a wahoo kicker, used about 2-3 times a week about 1 1/2 hours per. lasted a year 1/2.
BUT, they replaced it quickly with a reconditioned model. Included free shipping label. When I put the unit in the original box, you could hear ball bearings rolling around in the housing. Still for $900 come on, you would think they would last longer than that. Good service but someone needs to do a long term, like 2 year comparison.
I interested this video. Your review so good. I like you,see you next video
DC Tourmaker!
Nice insight, thank you Ray :)
Haha...thanks!
Great review my man 💪👆❤️👍
Thanks!!!
@@Dcrainmaker one of the best, keep up d good work man
So cool! Will you be posting more coverage if the tour as it rolls on? (Pun intended 😁)
I kind of expected you to come by DK, which I had to chance to buy you a beer 🍻 but was camped out on the route. Hope to come down to the cave this year (if COVID allow)
Keep up the good work!
Aww, bummer! Yup, we're hoping to have a DCR Open House as well. We might try for late summer, or maybe hold it for hopes in December like usual. Though, maybe we should just hold it earlier!
Cool to see that’s the teams jussing smarttraingers
Fantastic! can you please check what helmets are riders using please? Thanks
Good one👌, no one thought of this
Laundry machines at the end looked like they were winking at us!
Interesting video to see what the riders are doing. Would be nice to know which warmup protocol they use.
Yeah, sometimes we see it better at the longer TT stages, written out on their handlebars.
Ineos is public. They use the same regardless of the length. They came up with it by scientific studies.
I think my output FTP would jump 10% on the EF education first trainer with those colors 😆
Cool video
Can't believe you didn't have a closer look at the washing machines. What brand and setting is best for high-end clothing?
I’m getting myself the Elite smart trainer after watching your video. Simply because most of the team I’m cheering for are using the Elite.
Would love to see what they use for bike maintenance care. Morgan Blue? Muc Off or Dynamic Bike Care?
very cool
Press badge 🙌🙌 Hope you’re having fun buddy!
I’m only here for the laundry machine coverage which is on point. 👌
Thanks man! Always having fun! More fun tomorrow!
Any leaks about a new version of the Wahoo Kickr Bike this year?
Great video and nice to see what trainers they use! Do we not have to worry about our smart trainers getting wet? Watching this video it seems totally unnecessary.
I wish I had included more coverage of them getting drenched in a downpour. It got bad at times, even for ones supposedly under the awning!
7:50 Did I miss something? Is that Kämna wearing the jersey of the german champion? :D
@drachenschweif I see, honestly didn’t know that TT and Road Race are differentiated during the tour 😅
Wish gopro would re-release the sessions camera. Update it a bit then its form factor is perfect for me.
Me too!
The mask was a cool touch; did wonders for the audio.
Very nice 😎🤝🤟🏼
Thanks ✌
Favourite insight was the washing machines!
Haha...will add more washing machines in next video!
I'd like to see a retractable washing line with all the team kit pegged out once they get down to warmer climes.
Now I need to know which laundry machines all the tour team use!
Now I want to paint my Kickr pink ;-)
greenedge, what a throwback hahaha
It still even says it on the front of their team busses!
I like the washing machine cut
I noticed that both EF Education and B&B Hotels use the power2max NG ECO model, and not the NG. Why would that be? Is it just the convenience of the battery life?
Hmm...interesting question. I'll do some poking.
What's the washing machine model again? hehe just kidding. Thank you for the coverage.
I would like a review of the laundry machines on the team buses.
Id on cooling vest?
I bet elite give UAE the new trainers just to get some photos of Pog on it...you can imagine the advert, we help riders win the tour 😂
Were there some new UCI legal TT bikes (Movistar with a new Canyon, DSM with a new Scott)? Scott and Canyon don't have UCI legal disc TT frames afaik
Canyon makes a TT version of the new Speedmax (not sold in the US). Scott riders used the old Plasma 5 TT bike
@@darthjohn0 If it makes a TT version, it isn't sold in Germany either (minute 1:44). And the Scott TT bike at 5:12 definitely isn't the old Plasma 5. That one doesn't have discs and the tube shapes are very different.
I would like to see a washing machine as a flywheel on a trainer. I could watch that all day 🥰
I am so used to the shed talk where Ray talks at a normal pace
speaking of fast spins
wouldn't it be interesting if the washing machines were powered by smart trainers
Would be very eco, get the sprinters to di the Spin cycle, 1700 w for 1100rpm
Haha...sometimes I just gotta fit it all in!
@@dystopiaisutopia I do try. But, there's also a very simple reality that if I talk slower, the video is longer. And at a certain point, people simply don't click on a video to watch it. For a video like this, it only ended up 9 mins, but I shot for 90 minutes, so I had no idea how long it'd end up.
I wonder if you could use a waterproof mic under the mask to help improve the voice sound?
Perhaps. This was actually pretty good. What hurt matters was that my mask was entirely drenched from the downpour rain. So it kinda sucked up against my face.
Are any of the teams using a battery to power individual smart trainers? I believe sky were doing this with wahoo a few years ago. If so any ideas of s good battery solution?
They just plug it into their RV/motorhome. For the Tacx NEO, they can operate them sans-power if they want to. In fact, so can the Elite Justo trainers too.
@@Dcrainmaker Have you ever seen any good battery solutions? Not just here at the tour but anywhere?
Ay…it seems like Saris is not sponsoring. I was expecting at least one team like bike exchange with Saris. I’m enjoying my H3, no issues with this trainer..thx for the vid and insights!
They've historically only sponsored a single team (Trek), and that was mostly just a case of them sponsoring another Wisconsin team. I wouldn't read too much into it.
thank you from Truckee California, 4th of july from a loyalist
Hello from Sacramento!
Happy 4th to you too! Truckee is an awesome place!
Next time, can you ask the riders to stop pedaling and unclip to check to see what pedal power meter if any they are using. Might be an IQ2 in there somewhere as well, you never know. Sound.
Hang tight....
@@DcrainmakerUpdate 76
That’s the equivalent of asking Lebron James to stop his pre game shoot around to ask him which socks he’s wearing.
Having a washing machine while traveling Europe is underrated.
Pretty sure the Jumbo person is Roglic
It depends on who they are sponsored by?
No Saris sponsorships? Is that typical or perhaps due to their current dire financial situation?
Pretty typical actually. Historically, Saris has only sponsored one team (Trek), and I'm not even sure they did that the last few years (restrictions for the TdF were a mess in 2020/2021, so I didn't cover it).
Wow, the Tacx travel bag is actually cheaper then the motion plates 🤣
Hahahahaha! I never noticed!
Big price drops on the kickr v5. Something new coming up?
The KICKR's have basically been on perpetual sale since last Fall. Like most brands?
I’m not a fan of wahoo trainers had a kickr snap which packed up after 2 years only used in the winter months . I have a elite directo XR now which is much better
0:22 - hmm, which are the big 4 smart trainer companies here? There are only Elite, Tacx and Wahoo in your video?
Saris, they didn’t sponsor any teams this year.
👍
that washing machine looool
They should connect those smart trainers to the laundry machines to save power.
GCN who??? DCR killing it!!
Haha, thanks! Fear not though, GCN is awesome too!
Was a Dutch company
Technically, Tacx still very much is (legally/officially). They're just a fully owned subsiderary of Garmin (which, if we want to get real technical is a Swiss company). Nonetheless, all Tacx products continue to be made here in the Netherlands, by Dutch people, with the top person at Tacx still Simon Tacx.
no saris : ( i cri
nice washing machine. that's what i personally use for my "training"
The teams are missing out on another revenue stream. Washing machine sponsorship 😀
What about 2024?
We'll see next Friday at the first Time Trial stage (they don't typically use trainers on normal stages). Stay tuned!
I‘m surprised that only 4 Teams uses Wahoo.
Ultimately comes down to how much Wahoo wants to spend. $100K/team adds up quick!
why are so many having paper stuffed up their nose during warmup?
Next up ⬆️ Formula One drivers, what cars 🚗 do they drive. That’s how far away I’m as a 50 year old dad is from the TdF tech. But I love ❤️ my Canyon Endurace, best bike for me. It does pavement and packed gravel with 32 mm tires. Nice behind the scenes anyway. My next upgrade will probably be the 105 Shimano carbon wheels.
...wait... they use the sponsors gear ... 🙃
I asked myself… do the riders really care for the trainers? Probably not…
Not much i sight to be gained as they will use whatever they're sponsored by.
Nice video - very interesting, but slow down your speaking speed. You're slurring some of your words.
Thanks for sharing. This ridiculous charade regarding masks has to go!
Dozens of trainers sitting beside washing machines spinning away…and no one figures out how to put that wattage to real use. Come on…wash your own kit, you hamsters!
easy guess:
they use those they get paid for using them…….
Can’t watch mask videos
Can’t deal with people who can’t live in reality of respecting athletes that have trained their entire lives for this moment.
@@Dcrainmaker it’s nothing personal it’s just,
Painful memories
Someone asked- best way to wash their kit… try this:
Jump right into the shower with kit on, lather up the outside of kit with body wash or gentle wash detergent, take off kit- wash the inside- squeeze out then roll up in towel to get excess water out- air dry- boom, best way that I’ve found! Gets everything super clean 🧼 😃.
