Thank you for this rare coverage of the prestart in pit lane along with the head units and power meters systems. I was not aware how many teams are equipped with Shimano groups components. I really enjoyed your press pass POV.
I would be fanboy-ing so hard if I was in Ray’s position. Just being able to walk around and talk to the riders would be a dream come true. Really cool!
Great insight into not only the gear they have but what it’s like before the start of the stage and how massive the convoy is that supports the riders. Thanks for this!
That was really great, Ray. Really good supplemental stuff since I was able to Skip/Quick watch most of the tour this year from about Stage 7 (missed your home rides 🙁) What a great competition it has been, Jumbo-Visa has quite a team. It is pretty amazing the amount of money that goes into the teams and the production for this event, considering there is no money being paid for viewing or attending it. It is all coming from advertising (TV) and sponsorship.
Thank you so much for doing that - over here in Oz we don't get access to these sorts of events. So after following it online we never get to see the huge entourage that supports the Teams - so much infrastructure and so many personnel are involved its amazing.
Excellent behind the scenes footage!, very interesting to see. Impressive how you identify most of the gear in 0.3 seconds 🙂Best not to get the calculator out, there is some serious budget on these support car rooftops 🤯
Thanks for the was an extra special behind the scenes look at all that goes into supporting this race, how exciting it must be to be there as they roll out for their long days. Also nice to see what the pros are using.
I like the lack of phasedness of both you and riders for mutual presence. Oh, no biggie - just Vingegaard/Pogacar passing by. Oh no biggie - just a dude weaving between our bikes with a GoPro mumbling our headunit models under his nose.
It was nice to see the 130 there (130+ maybe?). I recall an annual review with you and Des, Lama, where both of you said that 1030 is the best bike computer, then Des said he liked the 130 a lot, and both of you were "oh yeah!". One of my favorite moments 😀
Thanks, Ray, terrific video as always. That said, I can't believe you had your back to the Shimano crew give your prior, um, let's call it "candid feedback" about their PM accuracy. Don't risk yourself for the UA-cam hits, Ray, it's not worth it!
Not sure I understand. Shimano is a vast company with many employees. These guys could have been the cycling shoe team for all I know. No idea who they were. I’m testing the new Shimano PM separately and will report accordingly.
Very interesting, you should do this quite more often, even in other cycling sports: MTB XCO and Marathon WC, Triathlon Short and Long Distance. In Triathlon the preferences between difference in computers and watches etc
At 14:13, number 175 Bauke Mollema does have a bike computer in his backpocket, but only to record data for his trainers, doesn't like/care to have the numbers right in his face while racing ;)
Wow, Great look behind the scenes DC! I just arrived in Paris to watch the stage. Trying to figure out the best spot to watch for tomorrow. Any pointers welcomed!
what's even more surprising with the Israel rider is it was Froome with the Garmin, which he used on a couple of stages. He used to be an investor in Hammerhead til SRAM purchased it
Nice video. Would love to see some insights like what’s data fields the riders use and what’s features they have active ( bike crash alert probably not but perhaps nutrition reminder..)
Great video, as always. I could not see, are the spare bikes labeled? Wonder how the mechs pick the right one off the car in a change. My Edge 500 cheered when it saw a rider using the 530!
The bikes on the racks are placed on the racks in a particular order. GC an important riders will have the bikes placed on the outside so mechanics can easily dismount them in a hurry. Most mechanics will have a sheet of paper which helps them to locate each rider's bike on the rack. Mechanics usually stick the cheat sheet to the back headrests.
If you had to guess, when would you pencil in the release of the vector 4’s? Ps loved your casual approach, and that you spotted he didn’t have a course sticker….love it…..keep it up 👏
Nice, very nice coverage. Very late now but I would love to see how the team cars use the veloviewer route highlight product in future. Maybe you could get together with Ben from Veloviewer and explain it.
Thanks for the video.. .really good stuff and your humor always.. BTW, I was wondering.. towards the end of the video, while you walking through the line of the team cars... I was wondering has anyone done any reviews on why team select the brand of the team cars? I noticed, Audis, skodas, Volvo and even Benz.. and there was even Citroen for the french team... As always, looking forward to your next video. Keep up the great work!!
14:12 Bauke Mollema never uses bike computers, he prefers riding on instinct alone. Also, I believe Alaphilippe only switched to powermeter and bike computer in the past year or so.
Great access. Nervous till the end, I really thought someone was going to try and kick you out. How about the way you can sniff out those computers. Just by walking past them you can tell the Make and Model.
I can't think of a more important Press credential than one to promote the products that these Sponsors pay a ton of money to have the Teams use. The Tour should pay him to do Behind the Scenes 😀
How crazy is it that the GoPro Session is still being used but hasn’t been updated in years? Seems like that is the perfect form factor for bike races.
It's been 8 months since a video on cycling computers has come out. I love my watch, don't get me wrong, but I'm ready for cycling specific stuff and talking about power and wattage and cycling training. I really wish you did a video on Beeline's new cycling GPS at least until Garmin comes out with the 540/840...
Just now seeing this, great content. Just curious on your thoughts regarding all those Shimano power meters since your last video talking about how poorly they work. Do you think they can/will/have changed due to the issues the Dura Ace power meters seem to have based on your previous video.
@4:12. I see the Vision 4D bars and a mount for the bolt as this bar is an aero bar. Where are these!!!! Wow nothing from stages either for headunits or meters. From last year being on the winning bike!
Love your behind the scenes looks at the TDF! One specific question: during one of the stages a rider (UAE?) broke his chain with implied cussing at the Italian manufacturer. Can you give us some background info on this, please?
That was one of Pogacar's key lieutenants, Rafal Majka (from UAE) who had a muscle tear when it happened right as Tadej was trying to get the Yellow jersey back. I do think they did say on TV that the swearing was for the manufacturer which was new to the team, although Ray is probably right that it was more likely an installation problem or even picking up something from the road. I can't imagine a chain at this level just failing.
The main camera (facing me) and towards most bikes, was a GoPro Hero 10 (5.3K Linear @ 30FPS). And then there was a handful of shots from a Panasonic GH5 with a stock lens. Maybe one or two iPhone 13 Pro photos in the mix.
Impressive level of access you had on this walk through. Thanks for the info.
Gosh, I'm blown away that i have never seen a casual behind the scene, focussed on their tech.
great vid!
So cool the access you had that you could walk right up to the riders!
Thank you for this rare coverage of the prestart in pit lane along with the head units and power meters systems. I was not aware how many teams are equipped with Shimano groups components. I really enjoyed your press pass POV.
Wow, impressive walkthrough, would love to know what rack system the team cars use. That would be interesting
Great behind the scenes video. Really cool to see how it is all organized right before the start of a stage.
Holy shit that was a fascinating behind the scenes look at the tour. Thank you 🚲
One of my favourite of your videos! Fantastic behind the scenes.
I would be fanboy-ing so hard if I was in Ray’s position. Just being able to walk around and talk to the riders would be a dream come true. Really cool!

Flash back with the Tour. All the tech that you are outlining is fantastic. Thanks for getting into the equipment's detail.
This video was way cool. Thanks fir taking us along. Logistics are insane.

more content like this, love it!
I just got me a garmin 530, planned some routes and can't wait to try out next weekend!
I like the lack of phasedness of both you and riders for mutual presence. Oh, no biggie - just Vingegaard/Pogacar passing by. Oh no biggie - just a dude weaving between our bikes with a GoPro mumbling our headunit models under his nose.
Great access Ray and great video 👍🏽. Oh btw your mask was upside down 😆
I love these tour videos!!! 🙌
Thanks Matt!
You’re a mindreader on top of your already impressive credentials. I was asking myself this exact question as I’m in there market for one.
Never mind the washing machines, what coffee machines were the teams using? Great vid, very insightful.
Great vid. Gives a real flavour of the scale of the tour. Cheers
Great video to watch! 🤍🫶
Portuguese 🇵🇹 fans wanted to talk to you and take a photo 😃! Cheers Ray
One of your BEST - and that's saying a lot! Thnx DCR 🙂
I loved the behind the scenes walk through! Thanks!
Wow you got some really impressive access. Thanks for bringing us along!

I love my 130!
130 is good for racing, very light and small. But battery is small too, needs to be charged before every long race
Amazing choreography of cars and riders!
I really enjoyed that walk through it just show how much gear is taken on a tour.
So much gear!!!
Thanks, Ray, terrific video as always. That said, I can't believe you had your back to the Shimano crew give your prior, um, let's call it "candid feedback" about their PM accuracy. Don't risk yourself for the UA-cam hits, Ray, it's not worth it!

@@Dcrainmaker Well, it COULD have been a Shimano Hit Squad 🤣
Wow! That was so cool. Thank you!!!!
Great idea for a video. Thanks for giving us access!
Brilliant info being put out, loved that walkthrough. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Ray, that was a great video 👍👍
I really loved this video! Great on site video. I love the tour and am so happy to see all this info. Thanks
Thanks!!!
9:56 Jonas Vingegaard casually rides by.
How exciting to be that close to the behind the scenes action!!! 🤩 Thank you!! Garmin HU but no Garmin power meters?
Pros probably prefer 1 pedal and the Garmin Rally just wouldn’t feel right
Fantastic job Ray!
Very interesting, you should do this quite more often, even in other cycling sports: MTB XCO and Marathon WC, Triathlon Short and Long Distance. In Triathlon the preferences between difference in computers and watches etc

Such a cool video, great seeing an insiders perspective, thanks for sharing.
Thanks that's a great insight into what's involved as well.
Dude yes so awesome you got to do this!!!
Very exclusive access. Well done.
Wow, Great look behind the scenes DC! I just arrived in Paris to watch the stage. Trying to figure out the best spot to watch for tomorrow. Any pointers welcomed!
Fascinating information! Thank you.
Thanks for the details and commentary
so almost wonderful beautiful video friend
This was great. Thank you.
what's even more surprising with the Israel rider is it was Froome with the Garmin, which he used on a couple of stages. He used to be an investor in Hammerhead til SRAM purchased it
Great video! Very interesting
Sweet BTS footage! How often do you get recognized by fans? Ever by the pro riders?
Really liked this one! THANKS
Nice video. Would love to see some insights like what’s data fields the riders use and what’s features they have active ( bike crash alert probably not but perhaps nutrition reminder..)
At 8:49 looks like one guy has 3 second power, Km per hour, RPM, Kilometers (distance) and watts
Great video, as always.
I could not see, are the spare bikes labeled? Wonder how the mechs pick the right one off the car in a change.
My Edge 500 cheered when it saw a rider using the 530!
Each riders spare bikes are in specific spots on the rack so the mechanic knows which one to grab.
@@BoxsterPB Makes sense, thanks!

awesome!!! Thank you for your walk through!
This was so cool Ray! What stage was it? I’ll watch the trainer version then, liked the walkthrough and behind the scenes
Trainer one was from Stage 1. This video was shot on Stage 5 I think. I got a bit behind with Eurobike stuffs.
Whoa this was awesome! Is that how loud the helicopter is all day for the riders?

Sponsorship
I can’t wait to see what they are using for 2024 tour
I’m lovin it, Ray.
Interesting to see 2 top teams (Ineos and TJV) still running 9100!
14:12 Bauke Mollema never uses bike computers, he prefers riding on instinct alone. Also, I believe Alaphilippe only switched to powermeter and bike computer in the past year or so.
Much appreciated!

this level of access feels insane
How crazy is it that the GoPro Session is still being used but hasn’t been updated in years? Seems like that is the perfect form factor for bike races.
It’s in need of an update badly! Such a great use case the Tour
I would love to know how they are keeping them powered. I think DCR hinted that this might be coming back?
So funny how the Shimano PM is by far the most used while also being the least accurate out there 😂
Indeed.
Makes me wonder if some teams stealthily use non-sponsored powermeters during training
I can remember the days it was SRM power meters across the peleton and of course no Garmin and Wahoo, bike computer just the SRM PC head unit ...
Interestingly (or not!) Chris Froome also used an Edge 830 at stages throughout the Tour according to his Strava uploads.
It's been 8 months since a video on cycling computers has come out. This masking at the Tour de France is absolutely unbelievable. In any case, thanks for the walk-through
Are the teams using the R9100P crankset also using 11-speed drivetrain or are they blending between the crankset and the rest of the drivetrain?
Should have gone over to the Shimano guys and asked them ' What would happen if a shimano sponsored team is also sponsored by hammerhead?'
merci monsieur !
Just now seeing this, great content. Just curious on your thoughts regarding all those Shimano power meters since your last video talking about how poorly they work. Do you think they can/will/have changed due to the issues the Dura Ace power meters seem to have based on your previous video.
Jumbo-Visma! 👍👏
@4:12. I see the Vision 4D bars and a mount for the bolt as this bar is an aero bar. Where are these!!!! Wow nothing from stages either for headunits or meters. From last year being on the winning bike!
My dream bike and bike computer set up would be the canyon bikes with full sram red axs at 7:55
Looks like most of the teams like running inaccurate power meters from what I heard about this shimano power meters. Plus my own experience with them.
I’m genuinely interested in the logistical nightmare that the event organizers of something massive like TDF.
I just realised that Bahrain Victorious team cars are plated from Zagreb, Croatia!?
Do you know or any idea of Hammerhead will come with a Karoo 3? I have got the Karoo 1 and I don't know if i should buy the Karoo 2.
Why Rainmaker speaks so fast? It looks that he has speed up the sound so it can fit in the time slot!
Love your behind the scenes looks at the TDF! One specific question: during one of the stages a rider (UAE?) broke his chain with implied cussing at the Italian manufacturer. Can you give us some background info on this, please?
Hard to know there, but generally speaking 95% of the time it’s a mechanics error, not a manuf one.
That was one of Pogacar's key lieutenants, Rafal Majka (from UAE) who had a muscle tear when it happened right as Tadej was trying to get the Yellow jersey back. @@Dcrainmaker Amazing editing/color matching then. Love your vids. Thanks again.
"one of the guys" on Israel using the Garmin 530 was surely Chris Froome.
So are there isn't a compatibility issue with using the old 9100p crankset with new 12s groupset?
DC is Campagnolo no longer a viable manufacturer and sponsor of the tour?
feels illegal wow love the vid
Are you going to be covering the Vuelta stages in the Netherlands next month?
Would be cool!!
The brand they have just depends on sponsors. I’d be more interested to see what data fields they use and why
