If you were paying attention, you’ve seen this coming down the pike. I remember reading about their Oceania experiment, they’ve been preparing for this. I can see TikTok’s relationship with the music industry becoming increasingly adversarial as they become more of a threat to the status quo. Will we see a fully fledged TikTok record label grow into something that can compete for market share against UMG, Sony and Warner?
if they can buy more lobbyists than those music companies it can definitely happen

Music is not off a short supply in fact music is so saturated that many talented musicians have quit music due to not being able to break but with the usage of the internet artists who would in traditional sense struggle or be blackballed have found success. Tory Lanez is an example. Despite going to jail and the whole Megan Thee Stallion drama Tik Tok revitalized much of Tory Lanez music giving him enough of a fanbase to get him a billion streams while in prison for a whole year

I’m not buying that the music industry is trying to get more for their artists, they’ve been known for being predatory towards artists all this time…now that they’re losing ground in the financial department they want to spin the narrative that “the artists aren’t getting what they deserve”. So my label is with the orchard who is owned by Sony and I can tell you for a fact tik toks payout for master usage is disrespectful. An artist I distribute did 548 million on tik tok and that paid out 8k. To put that into context 548 million on Spotify pays out about 1.6 million.
Spotify is a paid music app with ads, TikTok is not, also a lot of the time songs aren't the songs played for under 30s? Not to mention tiktok has to pay out the creator of the content as well.

I was just asking because when it comes to mainland China and companies in China they normally have a different set of rules for how they interact with overseas (international) companies like Apple, Amazon, Microsoft etc. with these companies usually bending the knee to be able to operate in China. It just makes me curious about say a Chinese artist in China whose audience is mostly Chinese but they are under UMG, does this effect them if they are only using the Chinese version of Tiktok?
