As a Service Advisor who used to work 4 Chrysler, one of the most common themes I found with the customers who drive Chrysler, were their blatant disregard to maintenance. I found owners who maintained their Chryslers, had vehicles that were more reliable than even the Japanese makes and many of them would go more than 200000 miles on them with nothing but replacing normal wear and tear items. I have also owned many Chryslers and they seem to run a long time as long you maintained them. That is the key even with the most unreliably rated vehicle.
Shahji Mangalam Well you must be talking about me. Just turned 250,000 this week on my 97 AWD Town & Country. That’s my 4th Chrysler Minivan. All 5 have made it over 100,000. In Two days I pick up our 6th a Pacifica. Best vehicles I have ever owned regardless of brand. Strange to see Consumer Reports saying anything positive about a Chrysler product. Generally I expect to read the worst on all American Auto Brands.
I have a 2019 with 70k on the OD. I feel like all I do is maintain the vehicle averaging $2,000-2500 a year in maintenance repair… two years ago it was door actuators and batteries, last year was fluids brakes tires etc, this year its alternator, engine mounts and main gasket seal…. And batteries which were still under warranty. Reliability is not a hallmark and it’s showing.
At work we have transit Vans for moving our crews. We got a few Pacificas in and now no one will even drive the transit Vans anymore if the crew Is less than 6 people. It is the first time I considered buying a minivan. It is great.
+jarforsythe Yes, but most cars designed 9 years ago do just as bad. It's not that 9 year old cars didn't meet crash standards back then, it's that safety has moved on that much further.
+jarforsythe go google the whole crash series. That is a 40mph overlap which JUST came out not too long ago. FCA responded by putting airbags down by the feet of the driver in recent models... but not much you can do about the chassis. ALL the other crash results were very respectable. That said, if you really want to be horrified, go check out the Nissan Quest crash. I cannot believe they still sell those.
+jarforsythe It does well in the other crash tests, it's just that specific one, which is relatively recent and quite a difficult test. Lots of vehicles have not done well in it.
As an owner of an older Chrysler minivan, reliability is not an issue. The minivan saved Chrysler one and it can save them again if need be. This is their bread and butter so it gets all of the special attention to make it reliable.
So i've owed one for exactly three weeks and in that time....one of the stow and go seats stopped working (dealer fixed) and the UConnect Theater hasn't worked since I purchased the van. I have been promised Chrysler is working on an software update. So one of the main selling points for the van (the one that satisfies the kids) doesn't work when purchased. I am not very satisfied at this point.
I hope that the 9-speed in the Pacifica is better than the 9-speed in the 200. Worst transmission I've ever driven, by a mile. If they put the ZF 8-speed from the 300 in it, I'd sleep a little better at night. Definitely excited to try out this new van though.
***** -- right, of course. What I meant to say was that, I hope Chrysler did a better job with the gearing on the Pacifica than the 200. Still though, I would have preferred the 8-speed. I can't imagine that the MPG is really that much better.
wiibaron -- the nine speed gearbox presents two problems in the 200: 1) the computer has no idea which gear to be in half the time, and 2) the car changes gears constantly, and unfortunately for Chrysler, the changes are not smooth. From a stop, the 200 almost always jerks to life as it quickly springs through four or five gears. It just feels unrefined.
wiibaron -- from the perspective of someone who drives a six speed manual on a daily basis, the 200's ZF gearing feels almost broken. No, it's not broken, but it's an insulting gearbox.
Supercar Kid Because of the Stow N' Go seating the AWD option is not available. I just don't understand why they couldn't make it an option without the Stow N' Go seating. But because of the weight of the vehicle, these vans do pretty good in snow and muddy terrains!
I find the Chrysler minivans aren't reliable at all but they are durable. We had an 88 Dodge Caravan and it had several issues like fit-and-finish and electronic problems. The biggest problem it had were all the fuel pumps it went through. 4 total. But we had the damn thing for 15 years. More than a big part of my childhood this van played a part in.
This new Pacifica will more than likely be laden with issues. I own a 2014 Grand Caravan and I have had more issues within 40,000km than an average vehicle with 150,000km. My transmission was out twice within the first 10,000km. Chrysler makes a nice looking product however the material quality of the components is poor. Hope this new van is breakthrough in quality and reliability! Good, honest review.
I always laugh at Chrysler for their stubborn looking, dated, and unreliable cars. But when I first saw the Pacifica, I was blown away. I was a bit skeptical that it could be just a fancier Town & Country, however I found it's all-new and was built from the ground up. No wonder it's well designed. I have zero complaints about the styling and interior. My only concern is reliability. If this is as reliable as a Sienna, Odyssey, and Carnival then the Pacifica is a hit!
Our Pacifica is too low to the ground. In 6 months of ownership, we had to repair/replace 2 bumpers and these computerized air shutters that break off when you scrape the front bumper. Cost us over $2000.00 to fix both times. This last time the shutter thing rubbed through the air conditioning condensor-we have no air conditioning. Don't buy if you live in a hilly area! Or get a lift kit for it!
+Luke Hoisington ok, so the word, "pacifica" is not new. You are right. Heck, Pacifica is a city in Cali after all... so yeah... it is not new. What they said was, this van is all new, from the ground up.
Back then, Chrysler DID make reliable cars and engines. Examples of one of their many reliable engines The Chrysler Slant 6 for example, their HEMI V8's in general. Usually their SUV's, pickups, minivans, and larger sedans are reliable. And that all before Fiat or Mercedes owned them.
i have a 06 pacifica, horrible, have to change motor mounts once a year, changed transmission at 55000 miles, front suspension, fuel pump was recalled but mine was not in that batch although i had the same problem that was recalled. Have a family member who had the same vehicle he caught on fire while driving on the highway. So for 2017 I’ll pass. I’m sure this car will be fine for the first 10-20,000 miles.
you all need to get off the Sienna high horse and face reality... recent recalls for electronics that will catch on fire in the visor to seat belt adjusters that WILL separate in a "severe" crash... you know... when you REALLY need it most to the 60-90K water pump breakdown is not what I would consider, "near bullet proof". Not to mention, shutting the front doors on a Sienna reminds me of shutting a door on a Geo Tracker (for which I DO have one). Sadly, there are major issues with ALL of the minivans as the lack the respect they need from their own makers. FCA finally breaks that mold. Sorry Kia, you are all show and no play.
yeah. which is a highly inaccurate test for reliability for a vehicle. A 12 month test is more accurate. Still, they should really measure it off a typical 3 year warranty.
When this guy is driving and stares at the camera and talks all I can focus on is his hand constantly moving and making stupid gestures to a emphasis to what he is saying. It's infuriating!
What a disappointing review from Consumer Reports. This is a new vehicle from the ground up. He mentioned the transmission has had problems but in what vehicles. No that V6 is not a high revving engine like the Toyota or Honda but it is still a great engine that you can easily get two hundred thousand miles on it. Please tell us more about the transmission problem it has had in the past and what Chrysler has done to remedy this. That is if journalism is not fully dead yet.
My Chrysler van has been a nightmare. Been in multiple shops nonstop for about a year. Replaced Cylinder heads, sensors, wiring.. and now waiting for a new CPU. Chrysler denied to cover the warranty at only 36k miles since I used Jiffy Lube. Sad, but True. Worse vehicle experience I have every had.. Compliments of Chrysler.
Chrysler had Reliability problems before FIAT (Fix It Again Tony). If you look at the models that are direct from FIAT they are even worse! Often American vehicles have reliability problems in the first year of Manufacture but the Chryco/FIAT vehicles just don't seem to improve. Take a look at the Jeep Cherokee and Scrambler or the Deisel engines in the RAM 1500 as examples of their problems.
0:15 Chrysler invent the minivan ? false : in '84 the first mini-van was the Renault Espace . And it 's funny to see that the rear of this new Pacifica look like the fourth generation Espace . In fact if AMC was not sold to Chrysler in '84 , AMC intend to bring the Espace in the U.S. . ( ok the espace was not a real Renault at first but a Matra which was affiliated with Simca, the then French subsidiary of Chrysler )
Sienna Limited (FWD) $46,900, blindspot, rearcrosstraffic alert, backupsensor +camera. Dual moonroof, Rain sensing wipers, etc. Pacifica (Touring L) - $44,000. - missing all those features listed above + others. (Touring L plus) - $48,000 - 2nd row heated seat, Stow 'n Go® Assist (Chrysler feature) , bright roof rails. Still missing the safety features listed above and others. Your buying the flagship model (beside awd option) of Toyota for the same price between two pacifica models with more features.
+95thRiflesOCI Chrysler has dominated the minivan market in sales since its inception. Chrysler also created the segment (30+ years). Not sure what your definition of "winning" is, but the Toyota Sienna has not in that regard.
The Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey are more reliable than the Chrysler minivan and Toyota is known for their good quality, something Chrysler is not good at
Thank u Chrysler, but because of your HORRIBLE reliability reputation, people should not risk buying one. That's how serious an automaker's reliability reputation is taken. U junk up and folks will pass up to a more reliable purchase.
Well Chrysler continues to sell cars, so obviously it doesn't matter to everyone. +FudgeRevolution I would hate to own a German car as much as you, but the difference is that at least they SEEM to be put together nicely and no one can really deny that they DRIVE beautifully. They don't RUN well, but that's another story. Chrysler generally doesn't even give the impression of quality, and for the most part their best-driving vehicles are Mercedes derivatives anyway.
+victreebel you really don't follow along. FCA used a different 9 speed tranny after about 2014... at least the part number is different so we are inclined to think they fixed the bugs in the original version. Numbers prove that to be true.
+Alex Rodriguez Chrysler didn't build their cars after 2005. Mercedes-Daimler did; and that corporation has terrible reliability. The Chrysler town and country has their platform and design. if you don't believe chrysler good reliability then mercedes doesn't either. with the chrysler 300 and the new pacifica chrysler believes they car escape that trap mercedes- daimler put them in.
+Johannes Stoppler what about the new 200? My mother in law has one and it's been awful. It had problems with the rear suspension, noises when you brake, transmission went unresponsive a few times, twice it didn't wanted to start. It's been in the dealer five times in less than a year. They though that with Fiat they would make better cars. I'm sorry but, it doesn't feel that way.
+Alex Rodriguez Keep in mind that the 200 is... rather WAS built in Detroit. The T&C is built in a very very prideful Windsor plant up in Canada... i mean, they are VERY proud of the T&C -- Most Canadians that I have meet are.
They recommend mostly Japanese. The Chevrolet Impala topped their full size vehicle list, beating out that Toyota Avalon. As well as other makes and models.
2016 Toyota Rav4 40k miles. Not a single issue. Not even a flicker on the check engine light. 1988 Dodge Caravan, three years in, 4 fuel pump replacements. I won't even mention the myriad of other electrical issues it had. 1994 Plymouth Voyager, also 3 years in, transmission doesn't engage 1st gear and leaves you stuck at a traffic light. a CLEAR difference in reliability.
Clueless car reviews. Only seem to get top of the line models, only drive them couple of times around a track no one else uses and no long term testing in the real world. You buy a car today they recommended, only to find out next year the car you bought is no longer recommended because the reliability of your model year went bad.
they need to bring back Lee Iacocca the maker of Dodge Caravan Fiat is going to kill Chrysler Pacifica is full of Fiat junk it's nothing but a piece of junk looks like my family is going to be buying 1990 - 2000 Dodge Caravans
Probably an infection spreading out of Jeep. The reliability of Jeeps was described as abysmal back in the 90s and it doesn't appear that anything has improved.
I'm not a minivan fan but this Pacifica would be first on my list if I were in the market.
Wow that interior is surprisingly very nice!

Very nice looking features (stow and go, blue ray entertainment, vacuum). The one word that killed any interest was transmission reliability.
Chrysler is the king of minivans.
I love the "BUT WHATEVER!" moment in the video. Not something you expect in a Consumer Reports car review.

It's always that annoying reliability but not bad looking for a Chrysler :)
You got that right.
Revenue Ranger Any problems?
what reliability problems? I've never had problems with Chryslers
Grant Jones I find that hard to believe but I believe you :)
+Grant Jones me either
Praise the van gods it looks good. Crossing fingers it can break FCA's bad reliability streak.

Does it come with AWD?
Not at the moment but it most likely will in the near future.
Supercar Kid Because of the Stow N' Go seating the AWD option is not available. I just don't understand why they couldn't make it an option without the Stow N' Go seating. But because of the weight of the vehicle, these vans do pretty good in snow and muddy terrains!
Currently no, but the new architecture is capable of housing AWD technology.
"If FIAT Chrysler can get over their reliability daemons" -- Not if FIAT has any say in it.
+mountainhobo My brother bought a Fiat 128 back in the 1970's.
F I A T = Fix It Again Tony forty years later. Nothing has changed.

Chrysler has a history of making great, unique vehicles, but reliability has always been their biggest problem.
This is a much better looking minivan than the way outta date Town & Country and Caravan.
I always laugh at Chrysler for their stubborn looking, dated, and unreliable cars. But when I first saw the Pacifica, I was blown away. I was a bit skeptical that it could be just a fancier Town & Country, however I found it's all-new and was built from the ground up. No wonder it's well designed. it should have went along the themes of the Chrysler 200 which in my opinion is the best car ever
They did the front end on the Pacifica is the same styling as the 200
Our Pacifica is too low to the ground. In 6 months of ownership, we had to repair/replace 2 bumpers and these computerized air shutters that break off when you scrape the front bumper. My chrysler vans have all been mid level, no power sliding doors ect...
I put 200,000 trouble free miles on both of them.
is the music in the video necessary, I don't think it should be that loud if you really have to have it
You think that music is loud?
Kia Sedona had those safety features like the surround view camera first
Who chose that jazz? Nothing wrong with it, just curious.
keyword: the Leader, follow up the leader of the segment !
the Pacifica is a great minivan but I feel like there isn't much commercialization as compared to the sienna and their term "swagger wagon"
Richard Joash Tan wut
Keyword: RELIABILITY
Amen.
DaddyIvo it's a Chrysler so it will be the best.
Since when is average good?
Great review and insights!
the name is not new. it was a SUV years ago.
+Luke Hoisington ok, so the word, "pacifica" is not new. You are right. Heck, Pacifica is a city in Cali after all... so yeah... it is not new. What they said was, this van is all new, from the ground up.
Ah good one mate.
Looks like a Toyota Previa/Estima/Sienna, Or whatever you call it in your part of the world.
Chrysler provides a optional Bumper to Bumper lifetime warranty
Such a nice van! But I’m freaked out over their reliability issues. Enough to rather prefer buying the Kia Sedona.
This thing is going to be $20,000 more than the outgoing Dodge Caravan. I can't speak for America, but this is going to be a tough sell in Canada.
such a cool van
Chrysler can not make reliable products! Its never happened
+DoubleD 613 numbers say otherwise. Chrysler cannot however make cars.

Why does it look like the Chrysler 200?
Chrysler, Fiat - reliable? LOL ... great looking vehicles, but FCA wouldn't know reliable if it bit them in the rear.
At work we call these Chrysler 400s. LOL
you all need to get off the Sienna high horse and face reality... recent recalls for electronics that will catch on fire in the visor to seat belt adjusters that WILL separate in a "severe" crash... you know... when you REALLY need it most to the 60-90K water pump breakdown is not what I would consider, "near bullet proof". Unique dial shifter ? Looks very inspired by JaguarLandRover
+sebxx "Unique" for the minivan segment. Nobody else is doing it.
+sebxx actually it is durango inspired ;)
We got one!!
Beth Piper has it been reliable so far?

Sienna again wins hands down in this market. Guess no one can compete with a flagship minivan that Toyota has offered for the past 10 years.
+95thRiflesOCI have yous seen the sienna interior?? BLEHH Xp. especially in the lower trim levels.
Have you seen the starting price for the Pacifica, Its even more expensive then the Sienna by almost $10k

my mommy drove a toyota so I will too. derp derp
But can I pick up girls in it?
Girls, boys. Depends on how many you have in your family...
they need to bring back Lee Iacocca the maker of Dodge Caravan Fiat is going to kill Chrysler Pacifica is full of Fiat junk it's nothing but a piece of junk looks like my family is going to be buying 1990 - 2000 Dodge Caravans
Chrysler and Fiat. The two most UNRELIABLE car companies join forces. Am I missing something?
+Revenue Ranger The average of something bad plus something bad is...something bad.
+Revenue Ranger Thanks Obama
Of GM, Chrysler & Ford, Consumer Reports says Chrysler is the least reliable domestic automaker
Probably an infection spreading out of Jeep. The reliability of Jeeps was described as abysmal back in the 90s and it doesn't appear that anything has improved.
Shit..that leather is disgustingly ugly.
This looks too much like the Toyota Sienna
It looks better.
Frederick Rothe III hell no ! Toyota looks better plus it's 100x more reliable
Danny Medina Not true. Not all Toyotas are all reliable.
And you seem to conveniently forget most Toyotas are equipped with Deadly Takata airbags.
+Danny Medina darn straight and much more powerful too. i just read Toyota a 8 speed and 3.5 v6 in that can produce 296hp.
Frederick Rothe III please name one Toyota that is not reliable? And every car manufacturer uses that company for airbags it's not only Toyota
Why would they name it after a terrible SUV? Is it just that unreliable lol
Somebody loan me moneies so I can go out and buy this car. Thx you
Chrysler=Junk
This minivan will be discontinued in 4 years.
