- Let's talk about Otherworld Legends, a beat em up game that does so many things well, but also does some very important things wrong. Namely, it has a couple important gameplay flaws and mobile game monetization. So let's review this action roguelike/roguelite and see if it's worth your time and money.

as a mobile game this was pretty good. but as a PC game it has a lot of things to improve. love the review btw.
Yeah slightly different standards. I do think it's all fixable, but tbd
Chillyroom has an issue with their ports mostly being left behind when it comes to updates, take Soul Knight for switch. The mobile version has been through a lot of updates with new heroes(+Beheaded), new biomes, new weapons and updated level designs. But the one on the switch is way behind with 2 years worth of udpates. Though I hope Otherworld Legends is not too left behind on steam.
I think, mainly the microtransactions are just for the pay-to-look-good stuff. all of the characters and their abilities can be gained via grinding. most of the things you can buy with real money doesn't guarantee you of winning at all (especially if you're playing 'the real mirage' difficulty. and if you're throwing in some real money, it doesn't even cost much.
those enhancement tickets, doesn't 'guarantee' the success of modifying the weapons. it just increases the chances of success (especially if you're upgrading yellow and red tier weapons).
I think armor regeneration was never an issue, ever since day 1 (mobile version release) that it came out and have played it. it's supposed to be like that. back in the earlier days, we'd even play the game 'bare-handed' no items, no weapons on 'Epic' difficulty and it's still do-able.
Having issues on squishy-ness proves that there needs to be upgrading on your 'Power of Asura' which can be grinded without spending money which I've done in my experience. get movement speed and atk speed at atleast 25% and it would make the experience a lot better.
Having movement and atkspeed are some of the mechanics that are not explained enough as it reduces frames needed to execute some of the skills and dodge animation.
Honestly, this is a very nice review for newcomers and some beginners, however I had some problems about some aspects of the review because I feel like they are deceiving and may end up being hurtful to the game:
First, I think the Daily Tasks system deserved more attention, as that is one of the easiest ways you can get more resources by playing 2 or 3 runs per day, it is also the way to get free Pet Food for your pets, it also was recently upgraded so it can now give you Forge Enhancement Vouchers, though I agree that the vouchers are completely unnecessary and give a bad look to the game.
Second, I'm sure you missed out on a lot of systems and didn't progress enough on the Treasury, because most of your grudges about the gameplay have been fixed via either items and/or power orbs, as an example:
Waiting for the shield to regenerate between fights might be fixed by getting the Bionic Armor, which let's you pick up potions to recover armor on top of recovering health, there's also the Armor Conversion items which transforms your HP into armor and doubles the regeneration speed, or the Meditation power orb which doubles the regeneration speed of armor and grants health regeneration!
With time and experience you won't need them anymore unless you play on the highest difficulty, but they hinder on the experience early on as they can limit powerful builds due to exchanging damage for survivability.
I do have to agree that ranged characters have problems hitting the enemies, that clip of you trying to hit the Fairy with Hannah's rifle really validates your point and that's something that can only really be fixed by the developers.
Third, about the whole "Pay to Win" debate, I can say that the developers are willing to make massive changes to the monetization system, because when the game launched on mobile, all characters except for Quan and Ginzo were Pay to Play, and most skills and even some skill styles were gated behind a paywall, this was changed the next day due to massive backlash, so if we are vocal enough they might feel obligated to make a change!
This game being mainly single player, I feel like calling the ability to pay for in-game currencies "Pay to Win" is not fair, as it can only really speed up the progression of unlocking characters, skills and skill styles, this doesn't make you more powerful in a run and the game is as challenging as it was before spending real money on the game.
The only systems that may count as Pay to Win might be the Power of Asura, which take *thousands* of Soul Stones to make an impact on gameplay, or the recently added Chakra, which is the equivalent of the Power of Asura system but, as of writing this comment, is only available for the Naga Sisters.
If you manage to max out the Chakra and spent a massive amount of Soul Stones on Power of Asura, then you probably already completed all the other progressions, maxing out these systems by paying can cost you up to hundreds if not thousands of dollars, as one of the last Chakra upgrades costs 280 *Rubies*, so the game encourages to play, as spending money is not worth it.
Being powerful can only be really hurtful in the Online Co-op mode, as the most powerful teammate will be the one able to carry the entire team without many items and the others might not be able to enjoy the run.
Lastly, the VIP membership is worthless, as you can buy drinks anyway with Soul Stones even if you don't have enough ingredients to make them, though it costs much more Soul Stones when you don't have enough ingredients.
The VIP membership is similar to the Forge vouchers in the way that they are there only to make the game look bad and deceiving to new players.
Either way, thank you for making this review! It was nice to be able to see the game as a newcomer after so many updates, I've been a fan of the game since it first released on mobile and I think the game deserves so much more because so much care and passion was poured into it!

Hello friend \:D/
Maybe you just havent unlocked the op items yet such as the elf king and the forgotten relic, although depending on rng it's really hard to get all the items to craft them plus their unlockable through the lore system in the game which I found cool.
That's definitely possible! I know there is a decent amount of item unlock progression that I didn't see yet
@@InsertReviews also you can unlock ban slots, choose your favourite item type at oracle and ban all unwanted items from that category. This guarantees to get that sweet build you want. Sometimes with your first shopping.
@@InsertReviews there is an Insane amount of progression and "hidden" stuff in this game. It's like the game doesn't even start until you beat it once and even then you have forever to go. I played it a few years ago when it was no where near this fleshed out. I downloaded itast night out of curiosity and damn I'm glad I did. It is such a huge improvement over launch when I played it.
After the latest update on mobile, Assassin's Blade is the new OP item. Just stack abnormal stat and have at least one disable, everything falls at your feet on Real Mirage, even with Pandemonium on. Doesn't have quite the same effect on imba mode though, but in that mode you're either god-like or suffering by scene 3.
@@InsertReviews just play through the game on higher difficulties.
You'll get the good stuff since you didn't play the initial build
Nice to see a new video so "fast" after the last one. Or maybe it is just me being busy and losing track of the time...
Good video. I noticed the gameplay and name in your last one but was not interested after a quick research.
Having a review provided by you surely confirmed that decision, but there is more to it than I thought.
Thanks for the review. Good video and nice to see that you are getting some support by the developers through provided keys.
Thanks! Yeah back to back weeks is rare for me these days unfortunately. I should have a little more time for videos in the next few months, but there is always something that can come up lol.
@@InsertReviews I'm amazed that you have the time to produce videos of such length quite regularly. In some weeks I den't even have the time to watch my UA-cam feed except on the weekend.
And reviews are a good way to not waste my time on games I don't want to play in the end.
@@newuardfkt Yeah it's a challenge at times. I always split up the video making process over at least 3 days just to make time, but it's a nice change of pace from my normal work.
That title is a bit of a mouthful, I must say.
Lol fixed it. Forgot to save the updated title so it defaults to the file name
You should make a review of soul knight some day, it's from the same developers and also a rouglite
Here are my thoughts about the game since I've been playing it since, pretty much release and I can somewhat fill you in with stuff that hasn't been said in the video.
About the shield regen mechcanic, there are this things called ''power of six realms'' there are 3 common ones you can have equipped and a rare one, adding up to 4 per category (you can only have 1 category selected out of the 6 there are) . They are usually dropped by bosses.( along with cassette tapes and other stuff )
One of this powers that has to do with shield is found in the Deva realm, that, when standing still for a short duration will make any regenerative effects stronger. Your shield will regen faster and so will your hp, making they wait for full shield shorter and and will also gain some hp as bonus. But I do agree that shield regen is not the best mechanic.
About the revival system, on mobile you get the option to watch an add at the end of your run or use a resurrection card for a revival which for a mobile game I feel it's fair, but for a roguelike not really optimal.
The gamble mechanic is not that big of a deal since you can now get weapon enhancer ticket by completing daily tasks, witch before the Steam port was not a thing.
The drink system is a complete joke, a drink cost about 50-ish soul gems without any ingredients and by winning the game you gain about 500+ gems this really just brakes the whole reason behind buying the membership or ever worrying about ingredients.
In the end if you really want to spend money on the game I only recommend the supreme pass since it's cheap and pretty much a complete steal, you gain everything from skin fragments to hero fragments.
P.S - liked the vid
I like your videos, I would be interested in seeing you explore more roguelike mobile games. I'm sure you prefer Steam games, because they are almost always better, but its nice to get a wholistic perspective.
Thanks! I've been considering reviewing a couple other ones that are both on mobile and on steam/PC like Shattered Pixel Dungeon or Slice & Dice. I think it would be hard for me to review mobile exclusive games because I don't have a good way to record those game hardware wise, and I basically only play mobile games when I travel.
I have been realizing there are a lot of mobile exclusive roguelites/roguelikes that I didn't know existed until recently, so I might keep that in mind for the future.
Hope you enjoyed the video! Hoping to get a review of Rogue Tower out next week if everything goes as planned.
Edit: Forgot to update the title before posting so it was the SEO word vomit file name. Should be fixed now!
Also the game has crazy builds and nice ways to play characters. It just sounds like the reviewer hasn’t fully explored the depth, which I understand since the review sounds like it’s really scratching the surface of the game. It’s a mobile game and it’s free. It needed micro transactions to make it survive. Knowing this, if this isn’t your type of game, you can’t knock it knowing what it is and wishing it was a game YOU want it to be. It’s crossing into another platform and it’s just not your type. It sounds like you’re playing at a casual level anyway and wouldn’t appreciate the higher scale difficulty of this game or the broken setups so players like you won’t be missed.
Pay to Win is no near present in this game, everything is grindable by effort, and skins here are grindable as well too, Armor regeneration is not necessary since dodging is the main survival mechanic, this adds to the fact that it is both a fighting and roguelike game, the fighting part makes sense as to why it prefers dodge, it makes you learn more of the enemies and their powers and attack patterns, thereby not necessary to have armor regen.
And in Items there's more to come for a beginner to judge the system, there is a progression for items you gain per wins you have and the more you push through the better items you get, plus we have a wiki to help out about items and how to create your favorite or suitable builds for a run
That is all :)
Great video!
Man your videos never disappoint! Great work man!
Thanks, glad you like them!
I'll give my two cents on this, and add my own opinion. I have played this game for a while, although frankly I'm quite bad at it. But hey, I've beaten rm once, for what its worth.
Its really not true that building doesn't matter. Building matters... a LOT. Its the difference between winning and losing. Slime-Meteor-Cross-Sac Dagger builds, follower builds, crit builds, etc, there's plenty of building options. If anything, the game is too build heavy- its pretty much impossible to beat real mirage without getting one of the above builds to completion.
As far as enemy and boss design goes, I honestly didn't like it. There's the stunning problem as you said, and some groups just feel unfair. Attacks don't seem like they are telegraphed very well, and in a cluttered room this makes dodging hell. Not to mention, enemies often sync up a bit too strongly- one may end up taking up half the room, while the other chases you around, leaving you with nowhere to go.
For bosses, some of them are reasonable, but others, particularly chen and Ibis (?) have some incredibly bs mechanics on harder difficulties.
Sure there's a lot of variety, but in essence, they all sorta fall into a few categories doing similar things. Not that this is a problem, but the variety almost feels artificial sometimes?
I absolutely despise the armor thing. I almost always play regen builds for that reason.
I'll heavily disagree with you on the progression part, but thats likely because I play mobile. The ad thing is perfectly reasonable for a mobile game, in fact its quite generous. As for the weapon buffs, I frankly never had an issue with them, as I always had more items than I needed. Although, I dislike the concept. With that being said, I think the p2w aspect isn't a problem at... all?
Rather, the real problem with the progression, imo, is that it doesn't really exist. It was REALLY bad on release, but its still sort of bad. All of the progression lies in a bunch of really meaningles stuff meant to keep you engaged, but the issue is that its... meaningless. Theres no huge character balancing issues, and you dont need to unlock any other ones. The character unlock thing just feels like a system to keep you busy- if I had paid for the other characters, I would have quit quicker because I ran out of things to do.
I’m a mobile gamer, ima indulge in this game & check it out
The mobile monetization is only for players who can't wait or are impatient at grinding dailies. I'm pretty sure they've implemented the dailies from mobile which lets you earn shards of specific heroes; you even get to choose which one, although it's from three in rotation. There's usually plenty of time to earn all three heroes, even if you only play three or four times a week, as long as you finish all of the daily missions. There's also more rewards every season on top of the hero shards. If you buy a season pass on the mobile version (1.99 USD), it grants you roughly 25.00 USD worth of stuff, albeit over time.
Granted, this is basically free if you have Google Rewards, it will still cost real money if they ever get around to adding season pass to the Steam version. I also have been playing the mobile version for the last year and have unlocked everything just by playing whenever I have break, and as a filthy casual who detests paying for content on mobile, that's saying a lot.
I think it's still well worth it. The game has a lot of polish for something from a relatively small dev.
How far have you gotten into this game? The builds get increasingly more complex as you progress and unlock more items and enemies started to gain new patterns and attacks too. The game is NOT p2w because you can unlock hero shards and gain everything just by playing. Unless you want to support the devs, paying is not needed at all. I have cleared Real Mirage under Pandaemonium mode plenty of times without paying a dime. This is one of the best rogue like games out there on mobile imo.
Man that title is something
Yeah forgot to update it so it was the file name lol. Fixed it now
Any review for Nightmare Reaper?
I like the naturally slow regen - aways a part of these rouges is the annoying handicap to overcome with a cool build. Standing around waiting for bars to recharge is the worst option by design, one I barely use anymore with all the cool item unlocks associated with regeneration.
i am once again asking for you to play the Consuming shadow
Chain bind + suck item (silver planet) + aoe attacks is already super strong vs groups
With other items like lightning elf, oreven better elf king it's op
Vampire fangs and the mirror are OP AF.
I have never died with that load-out, especially if I get the shield that turns armor into health.
A bit late on this vid but there is a good way to cut down the grind further by just selling the ingredients for soul gems. This allowed me to have more gems for trade and Pretty much have infinite gems on hand
Anymore tips for a beginner?
@@zurhonehamilton8874 never stick to a singular build. Each character can have multiple item builds especially since certain items need more of the same item type to be even more powerful.
Complaining about waiting a minute to regen your shield is crazy. As someone who played ragnarok online in its prime, leveling and regaining without potions is nothing in comparison.
This sounds like a first world gamer problem that newer casual players complain about.
Can we get a Noita review?
I don't think the armor is a problem i think its just better to not get hit
Considering every attack or anything that deals damage has hit flinch, the fact that one of your main reasons for not playing the game is for waiting when for shield regenerate when you dont even need to conserve that much hp and shield still regens even when fighting
its weird how we've generalized the idea that the mobile game market solely exists to make money and not to create and provide enjoyment through games. I guess that idea is slowly seeping into many studios outside the mobile market though. Good review!
This has always been a thing outside mobile games too. Typically, to make good games, you need to make it a job. If you make it a job, the main goal will always be to make money. Literally all major studios treat games just as a way to earn money, and simply have different ways of doing so. Naturally, some individual devs in larger studios will have lots of passion for what they're doing, but even then their main objective is to do their job because you need a job to live ffs.
Main difference between mobile vs console + pc games development is how they monetize it, and that's entirely a market behavior thing and not a matter of the devs' passion.
Best game for Android very fast and intense action
The New year event is so FREAKING UNBALANCED. The fact they got 2 Chen for final boss with High Attack, Attack speed, Unflinched, Continueously spawning. Really the reason why this game lost all hope for me
Chill out
their recent New Year Event is better as expected, its a chess like minigame that gives out a lot of new year tickets
its a mobile game first and it focuses on being that and its really great at it with its simplicity as mobile screen cant have too many buttons and feels good to control as a mobile game
and why should i play this on pc there are countless other aswm complex roughlite u can explore in pc and its not that its justn a simple game that is very well optimizzed for mobile device
They definitely make more money this way but if it were a B2P I strongly believe this game would've solidified itself amongst the greats in the roguelike genre like Slay the Spire, Dead Cells, Hades, Isaac etc.
Instead it got buried due to the monetisation model that requires you to put in MMO time to unlock content. Shame because this is a quality game even compared to pc titles.
No where near the titles you mentioned even as a B2P
i have online problem with this game its hard to connect to other players
the game is already good as is nothing is wrong with it. i never single dime in this game, its not a pay to win game it a roguelike dungeon crawler like their other games. it took me 10 tries to get to asura and its fine. the items are random every run, changing the item in the weapon is base on luck, but thats the best of it its fun. you lost, it fine just try again, you didnt get the item you want, just adapt. the shield thing is perfect that way you'll learn how to survive more. honestly it took me a year just to get all the hero in the lobby exept the new one, i only rely on the free wild pass fragments.
this game dont need your full time and attention, its a past time. i only play two times a day and its fine. this game is not like fortnite or league or roblox that have a pay to win or even genshin who is heavily pay to win on all the characters.,,
this game is just there for fun, there's nothing else to it
The mobile version is fine.
But I have to say that this game is overpriced. And there's also way too much DLC. So I just stick to the mobile ver.
Yeah the shield mechanic in this game is too long to regenerate. Compared to their other game, Soul Knight.
This game is not pay to win. The smithing tickets you complained about are not necessary, those are just shop items that give player a little bit more control on fusing items to weapons. If you think this is pay to win then you have clearly not experienced what other mobile games have to offer on that front. Your complaint about the armor regen is not valid, the point is to have enough skill to not tank too many hits if your not equipped to do so. There are several items and abilities that cost nothing to unlock in the game that can either shorten or completely bypass the wait time altogether; many or most of which existed since the games release if I'm not mistaken, items like hearted shroud or hot blooded heart.
I dont think this review painted a good picture of this game. In fact even its monetization is really well done. You can get everything by playing for free in this game, altough I preffer spending a few £ every once in a while for battle pass or a new skin. Its really cheap compared to most mobile games, so why not to support a game I enjoy:)
Oh and gem system makes sense - red gems are used for hub upgrading. Once u done with that - exchange to white gems for asura power dump. Same with blue ones, but its used to unlock new skills. Its not necessary i guess, but why not.
Enchanting fail chance is quite annoying, so i keep playing with blue weapons which have high enchant and upgrade rates. Well if you really need to you can restart level after failure - not a biggie.
Armor regen is not a big deal, since the idea is not to get hit. With spamable dodge and enough pratice its not that hard to do...
Ranged characters are op. Actually every character kinda is in its own way. The rifle girl you played + reverse fart skill (the one which sucks enemies in unlockable by grinding gold rush boss) is the best room cleaner imo.
Item builds matter a lot and there is easy ways to manipulate shops - item bans and oracle.
Thats all, a shame most people will not try this gem after watching your review. It just got multiplayer coop update:(
This riviewer just needed something to complain about
What the hell is that title
Lmao oops I forgot to save the updated title
@@InsertReviews yeah, the new one is much better lol
Fenomenal as a mobile game but only meh for pc standarts tbh
I love THIS GAME. TRUE GOLDEN, don't care of what the nay sayers say.
Thats why the Mobile version is better than the PC...
I hate that this game has so much plagiarism, or how they call it "references". I found a lot of items taken from risk of rain, the binding of isaac and enter the gungeon. I understand when you have 20% of items as references, but when it is more than half of the items (and the other "original" items are just stereotypical rpg items) i just can't stand it
make your own game then dude
@@joeltaylorthethird5443 making my own won't solve problems with this one dude. Before saying something think about how it applies to the current subject
