  • In this video I use an airbrush for the first time, on anything, ever! Come see what I did right and wrong and let me know what you think of the finished product. The airbrush was just a Mastercraft kit from Canadian Tire but it seemed to work well. The Hampshire Sheen intrinsic colors I used came from Woodslee Summercraft, the link to their online store is in the description below. Please leave a comment and a thumbs up or down. I hope you enjoy this video, thank you to all who watch!

    Never been a fan of painted bowls or the form you chose but that’s me. As long as you’re satisfied, that’s most important.

      I chose the form to give me some surface to colour and that wood as it looks terrible on its own. Was good practice I guess. Thanks for watching!

    Turned out very nice for your first air brush project, im glad you are enjoying the dyes, not paint 😉, and yes seal the dyes in after, and before Hampshire sheen, you can actually use Yorkshire grit and Hampshire sheen after sealing. Thats how i use them anyway.
    Take care

    Lewis, for your first airbrush attempt, you did great! I color all my bowls, and use Fiber Reactive dyes. One thing I do is to raise the grain before applying the color, at least twice. It works well for me.

    Great 1st crack at it, Lewis. I just got an air brush a few months ago, and it's a cheap one, but it works. I understand what you're saying about the sealing. I used mine, after I was done colouring, to run wipe on polyurethane through it To seal it and then after that I used the polishing pastes and waxes on it. I'm still waiting to try shellac in it. I have as much left to learn about it as you do, but I'm quite excited to keep seeing in which ways I can incorporate it into my embellishing.

    Dyes, stains, inks, and paint each have different characteristics when it come to applying them to wood. Water based dyes (like Intrinsic) go on first so they will solidly penetrate the wood, then get sealed with sanding sealer. Same with alcohol based dyes. With stains, sanding sealer goes on first to insure an even absorption and reduce blotching. Same thing with paint, sealer first. Water based dyes can raise grain, so sealing, then using a sanding paste gives a good surface. Please take time to let your viewers know that paint, stains, and dyes are all different, and have different procedures for application. There is a lot of confusion out there when it comes to applying color to wood.

    • @TheKlondikeCraftsman
      @TheKlondikeCraftsman  2 роки тому

      That’s what I thought on each as well. When I use different product I’ll get into the steps. Better to not confuse viewers or myself with too much info at once, haha. Thanks for watching Valerie, I appreciate it!

    • @ahpdebeer
      @ahpdebeer 2 роки тому

      Thanks for this info, it's really good to know. Not to sound ignorant but what is the difference between stain and a dye? Also if you have applied the sanding sealer and then the stain or paint, must you then seal it again for protection and what would the best choice be here or would that depend on the finished look you want to achieve? Thank you

    • @valeriehenschel1590
      @valeriehenschel1590 2 роки тому

      @@ahpdebeer Dyes are dissolved colors, no solids. Stains and inks have pigment and solids and are semi-transparent, soaking in just a little. Paint is made of solid pigments, and sits on the surface of the wood with very little absorption. You want dyes to be absorbed, so don’t block it with anything. Stains can be absorbed unevenly, so a sanding sealer helps even out the absorption. Sealer under paint gives a consistent layer for the paint to rest on. Sanding paste is usually oil, wax and a grit that breaks down with friction, you can use any wax or oil based finish over it. If the finish will be something else not compatible, then the wax can be removed before the final finish is applied. Hope that helps.

      @@valeriehenschel1590 Yes Valerie it's very informative, I really appreciate you taking the time sharing your knowledge, I'll definitely rethink the way I apply stain, I never used dye before and very little paint but I use stain a lot and have found using a cloth for application works best for me in minimizing blotching but with this new knowledge I'm sure I'll get perfect results. Thank you so much.

    • @valeriehenschel1590
      @valeriehenschel1590 2 роки тому

      @@yellowlillylilly1088 With stain, sanding sealer is particularly good for making end grain less thirsty. Sometimes it helps to do a second application on the end grain (or the whole piece) if the wood is very thirsty.
