  • Amazing plum wood. Wait til you see the color. This is another of my woodturning ideas on a wood lathe. this is a good project for beginner wood turning.
    Do it yourself projects are the best way to learn. I am turning a log to goblet from plum wood on a wood lathe.
    I left the log with bark at the bottom for a natural look. the goblet was sanded to 400 grit. I used shellac on the bark and friction polish on the rest. I am happy with how it came out. love the color on this wood.
    I hope you enjoy/enjoyed these new woodturning videos.

    After watching a few of your videos I have now started to use the wing in my turnings.

      I started using the wing because I'm left handed. It made it easier to do a lot the turning. Now it's become a habit for me.
      I hope it works well for you.
      Thanks for watching Bob!

    That came out great. I don't think I have ever seen anyone use Plum Wood before. It has great colors and grains. Reminds me of how Yew Wood looks.

      Thank you John! A friend of mine cut the tree down and gave me a bunch of it. I had no idea it looked like that either. It's beautiful. I'm looking forward to turning more of it. One thing I've noticed is it's prone to cracking.

    Based my personal experience with Plum, it will start to crack in no time.
    Other than that it is a nice piece. 😎

      @@timclosson7166 I agree. What I'm thinking is doing shorter videos focusing on a couple things in each video. I'll probably have it set up as a series. Thanks for the input. I want to do it the way you guys want it.

    Well done. I really like this goblet, at least until I get down to the base. Just my opinion, it is too bulky for my taste. Make the live edge about 1/4-3/16”, keep the detail right down on the base, slim the stem a bit, and I think you have a fabulous piece. Then again, the first potential customer that sees it may pay tip dollar for it. Everyone has different thoughts and opinions. You did a great job with it. Thanks for sharing it.

    • @RcWoodturning
      @RcWoodturning  Рік тому +1

      Ya I agree with you. My plan was to make it taller but I had to cut off a couple inches because of a crack.
      Thanks for watching Doug.

    How is working with plumwood ..I actually never heard of it before this video

    • @RcWoodturning
      @RcWoodturning  Рік тому

      It's pretty much like other hardwood. It's really easy to get a smooth surface. It cuts really nice with sharp tools. There's nothing like having those long strings of shavings come off the tool...gives me goose bumps.😁
      Thanks for watching Derrick!
      I appreciate it!

    I liked this a lot, but how do you avoid cracks???

    • @RcWoodturning
      @RcWoodturning  Рік тому

      Thank you Lori!
      It's best if you can seal the ends of the wood and let it dry. If you turn green wood you want to try and keep the thickness of the walls as even as possible. Also you can put it in a paper bag packed with shavings to slow down the drying process.
      I hope that helps.
      Thanks for watching!
      I appreciate it!

      I changed the mix on it to 2 parts shellac to 1 part oil and alcohol. The shine last much longer.

      It's mostly grown in people's yards around here. I wouldn't say common. I'm not sure where plums are grown for production.
