My ex-wife was an artist and I used her airbrush some. Never got very good with it. The tips you presented here would have helped a lot. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

New toy! Love it! I almost bought one at the AAW show, but I had already spent a bunch of money...

Another neat toy Mike, even though it takes a lot of practice to get good at it.

Wow Mike I have had the same hesitation as you about air brushing. A club member here in Cookeville TN uses one but he is so good I feel intimidated. I look so forward to your honest learning curve. Love how you acknowledge early mistakes that we can all identify with. I feel inspired by all your teaching. It is painless kinda like Mr Rogers!

Thanks, Ken. I am 75 but I want to keep growing. Sometimes that means doing something that i s not comfortable. Of all of the things I have learned since starting woodturning, using video software to edit was by far the most difficult and frustrating.

Airbrushing is a sophisticated person’s spray paint! Welcome to the world of fine artistry!

If you have not seen Stewart Furini videos, check them out. He has done a number of videos about airbrushing woodturnings.. He just posted a new video on some airbrushes he just acquired. And he is fun to watch!

I do have an airbrush, but I've never used it. I do plan to learn soon.

Great video, Mike! I airbrush almost all my turnings, sometimes just enough to simply highlight the grain. I use Fiber Reactive Dyes which are by far the least expensive option, and make the cleanup process much easier. I have a Grex airbrush like you show in this video, along with the Grex compressor. I have done demonstrations for our local clubs, and wanted to find a very affordable option for people who wanted to try airbrushing without spending a lot of money. On Amazon, I found some airbrush kits for nail and tattoo artists, which include a very small compressor for less than $60. These work great. I airbrushed a small bowl with it, and was amazed at how even the dye was applied. I have a shelf full of different airbrushes and compressors that I have tried. I think the most important thing to point out to people is getting a dual action airbrush, where you can spray only air, then the more you pull the trigger, the more the product is dispensed.

Thanks for sharing. I have not tried my cheap Amazon brush yet. Looking forward to add color to some pieces.

All - FWIW - I'm a woodturner who paints on some projects. I'm not an airbrush guy who turns. 😀

Hi Mike, let us know what you end up using it for . Recently learned in order to make a shock for my grandsons school project. He’s 10 and we’re raising him. It was a great experience but I’m still trying to figure out how to apply it to my turnings.

Great video, Mike! I've never used an airbrush, but I've noticed them being used for wildlife carvings since you can get more subtle coloration and even blend colors a little better (rainbow trout for example). Looks like it will take some practice!

Thanks Mike interesting video. Had to Air Brush in college art classes, haven’t had time to get back into it since (30 years). I am looking forward to seeing how you put it to use and inspire me. This year your Christmas turnings should be could really colorful… 😊 as well as beautifully turned, as always.
