Brilliant overview Martin & for me who's spent their working life around custom vehicle bodywork/paintwork I think you covered just about everything. Sadly my airbrush was lent & never returned but I've been toying with getting another to add different finishes to some of my turning & you've given me the 'nudge' to get on & do it !!
Thanks for taking your time to share with us ........ Geof Harris

I think I need to find a friend with a set of these, and give it a try before I commit to getting myself a system, but it sure is a useful piece of kit I would love to own one day.
    Thank you for sharing Martin!

Nice video Martin. I use my airbrush to apply finish on open segmented pieces. Makes it easy to get into all of the open areas. Keep up the great videos.

That is really neat. I have one of those on my wish list for painting designs on my van. I need to learn the best way to protect it and also need to figure out what I want. I may buy some stencils already made but I also make my own. - Heidi

Very close, but I managed to restrain myself a bit. I promised myself the next tool purchase would be a new set of bowl gouges. I picked up a cheap model airbrush several years ago to paint some light switch covers which had some detail in them I didn't wish to fill in with a brush, so for moving colors a little, I might be okay for a while. But I don't think it would give enough control to accent a small bead or similar on a turned piece. For what it's worth, looking at a Paasche dual-action siphon feed which comes with bottles and a small cup which mounts on the bottom. Very similar to a model I spent a full summer using to touch up several thousand injection molded components which were part of a huge rework. The thing was bulletproof for more hours than I wish I could recall clearly :) I've just been working on modifying an external regulator and water trap so they'll mount onto the lathe, maybe a day this week if I can find some dye I'll be ready for attempt #1?
      Have a great week,
      - Bill

A very thorough look at the airbrush Martin, and it looks the dogs mate. I wonder if I could somehow use my large air compressor and just get the brushes and bottles?
    Great video mate.

Hello Mike, Martin makes this look like a lot of fun doesn't he? I've been looking at this an awful lot recently to replace a really cheap model that manages to find its way into the shop occasionally. Take a look on youtube for single action vs. double-action, as well there are siphon feed models which include a a paint cup as well which can be handy such that you don't have to dedicate a jar to an odd color you dream up for a particular project. Your large compressor can easily be used, in mine I've setup a separate regulator on a board which could be clamped onto the lathe bed I suppose. Goes like air nipple -> ball valve -> regulator -> air brush hose adapter. This way I can leave the main air hose hooked up, but turned off at the ball valve and still disconnect from the airbrush (or airbrushes) easily. The other advantage is that the extra regulator has a water trap (clear bowl on the bottom) which may be useful in areas of higher humidity (Seattle here, completely understand rain), where the regulator built into my compressor has no such device.
Will be watching, can't wait to see what you might come up with!
      - Bill

Hey, Mike! Looks like you already have an answer, but I have used my 30 gallon (125 PSI) compressor successfully with a variety of airbrushes. It comes down to fittings, water traps, and pressure regulators. The water trap aspect may not be too important when spraying wood with water/alcohol based products, but if you're trying to spray hard surfaces and get a wad of water coming through the air hose, it'll pretty much ruin your day. Cheers!

Any compressor can be used as long as you drop the pressure.......most have a variable regulator.....to an independent outlet and a regulator

Thanks Martin, I'm running out of excuses not to give it a go - just need to finish painting my bathroom (hopefully tomorrow !) and then I can get back to the lathe - item 1 a light pull (idea for the beginners series ;-). Anyway, my question - can you store the spirit stains in the bottles with open tops or do they evaporate ?

Do u have to buy a small compressor or could you run one with a small 3 gal pancake compressor?

    • @jameshailey3028
      @jameshailey3028 3 роки тому

If you can tolerate the higher decibel of noise, you can use the pancake. The compressor type Brad shows has a 60 to 65 decibel range. The pancake compressor are probably 85 to 100.

Hi Martin, I forgot to ask you if you use the spirit stains undiluted or if not what ratio of colour to 'thinner' you find best. It's been a long time since I had a brush in my hand & back then I used auto refinish paint. You'll guess by now I invested in the compressor & brushes. Many thanks, regards ..... Geof

Hi Martin, I enjoyed your airbrush video and your sycamore bowl projects. I have just purchased (Amazon) a very similar compressor to the one you use, which came with 3 airbrushes, but not the auxiliary tank - do you know if this tank is available as a separate item? I can certainly see the benefits of using this. Looking forward to more videos and great ideas from you, thanks. 👍

Hi Martin...great video as usual. You say you prefer to use the suction type airbrush. I also have that type, but after using each colour I wash the jar. I see that you have several for each colour, which makes more sense.Do you store the medium in the jars? or was that just for demo purpose. Just thinking about evaporation etc. And is your airbrush compatible with solvent based paint/stain? Thanks Martin

    Hi Martin,
I've fancied having a go with the airguns for a while, no wet edges or any nasties like that with an airgin.
Is it possible to make your own colours etc with the spirit and pure 'pigments'? the pigments I emailed to you! the pigments would be much cheaper and you have the choice of making your own range of colours! Your set up looks brilliant, eveything needed to have hours, nights and day's of fun.
A very handy and interesting video thanks for sharing.
    Take care mate.
    Cheers
    Andy

      Hi Andrew,
Yes, you can mix the colors of the stains to make new colors.... For instance, you can mix the basic red and yellow to get orange, and so on. You can also dilute the alcohol based stains with .. more alcohol. In my experience, I have found it easier to just spray a lighter color, then an additive color, to get the hues I want - i.e., a light coat of yellow, then a light coat of red... if I want the orange to be more red, I just add another light coat of red...
      Good luck, Matt

They are, yes. I developed them to work through an airbrush. They are not metallic or iridescent though.

This was very useful indeed, thank you. as you know, I'v been thinking about going over to the dar... well, 'coloured' side for some time but wasn't sure which kit to buy so that problem in solved now. Question please... I noticed there are no caps on the spirit stain bottles... does the stain evaporate much?
    Best Wishes, Brendan.
PS I haven't forgotten about the pic I was to send, I'll do a Whatsapp video instead and send it to your phone because, if I put a 'Private' video up here I get lots of people message me to tell me I forgot to unlock the video.

Many thanks for this video Martin, I'd like to get one at some point so I've been looking forward to your video and this has been very useful indeed.
Is there a reason why you prefer spirit based over water based stains? I've been looking at both, but I'm not sure which way to go. I imagine the spirit ones are possibly more vibrant than water based ones?
