In this acoustic guitar lesson I will show you how to play the finger-picked Fleetwood Mac classic "Landslide".
Guitarist Lindsey Buckingham has long been recognized for his incredible fingerstyle guitar technique and his work in "Landslide" is no exception.
In this Landslide guitar lesson, I will demonstrate how to play the main acoustic fingerstyle part to this Fleetwood Mac classic.
The tuning for "Landslide" will be standard tuning with a capo at the 3rd fret. Any fret numbers I mention in the video lesson will be referring to that number of frets above the capo. So essentially just treat the capo as the zero fret.
There are actually a few guitar layers going on during "Landslide", but I am sticking with the essential parts in this lesson so it will sound great with just one guitar.
For the entire song Lindsey Buckingham employs the technique of Travis Picking. There are also many songs on GuitarLessons365 that use this picking technique.
After you get the fingerpicking pattern in your hands, you will basically need to just learn the different chord progressions in order to play the entire song.
The verse uses a short 4 chord progression but is broken up every once in a while with a short pause on the A minor 7th chord. Make sure you know the sound of the song very well and you shouldn't have much trouble figuring out when these short pauses occur.
For the chorus we have a lot more going on both with the amount of chords in the progression and the extra embellishments that are thrown into the chords. These embellishments vary each time around, but in the lesson I will demonstrate a nice a relatively consistent way to approach them.
The main focus throughout all of these guitar parts for "Landslide" is in the consistent Travis Picking pattern. If you can keep this pattern going smoothly, and can play all the chords in time, you will sound great no matter what embellishments you may or may not add to the chords. :)
So I hope this song will give you a nice challenge and also a great song to play at the end of it!
Carl...
Anytime I want to find a song played the right way-I go to Carl. Thanks for all the great lessons! You are making us all better players!
Forreal, Carl really breaks it down but at the same time, doesn’t waste time and drag out videos.
As a former clubbing guitarist, way back in the 80s and 90s,...I must say you are one phenomenal guitarist. Much respect. I am surprised one of the big name acts hasn't grabbed you for their tour or whatever.
Anyway, thanks for making excellent vids.
Carl played in a rock show revue in Vegas for years
Carl, I just found your lesson to this beautiful song. No one could have explained it more concisely than you did. You're simply an amazing guitarist and teacher. Thank you so much!
I’ve always loved this song and my mom requested for me to learn it and this video helped a ton! I’ve been strumming mainly but now I’m starting to pick up fingerpicking and I love it...thanks so much for this vid!
Thanks for all the lessons Carl, i am retired with disabilities but i can still play and these lessons give me something to look forward to.
keep on rocking !
God bless you
You’re awesome
The song isn't pretty hard itself, but those hammer on and pull off were driving me a bit crazy. Now, thanks to your exhaustive explanation, I got the whole song. Thank you very much!
Thank you so much. You made this easy for me. I have found that the Travis picking pattern will mess you up if you think about it too much. I like how you show the chorus can be somewhat random as long as your chord and bass notes are correct. I play that part different everytime :)
Thks Carl for this highly pedagogic and accurately shot lesson. I'm grateful
I've had this song bug playing in my head for a few days now. Decided I should probably stream it, and lo and behold! - an old 365 lesson on it! Thank you!
Thank you for this lesson on Landslide. You are an excellent teacher. This was very helpful. I am currently trying to learn his song, but working on my Travis picking is a little shaky. Once I somewhat master that, the remaining chords will follow.
Stellar lesson. You have SUCH good taste in song selection. Thnx for this one - much appreciated.
Thanks for posting this. You make it look so easy! I know that learning this fluently will increase my skill, not to mention my repertoire will grow with the addition of this great song.
The BEST lesson for this tune on UA-cam! THANK YOU CARL!
Thanks for teaching this song it’s very beautiful I’ve been teaching guitar for four years now , so this would be awesome to learn .
Thanks! Good work with the tri-screen. As usual, I am also grateful that I can pause and change playback speed. I appreciate it.
Thanks for taking enough time to explain this classic relic by Fleetwood Mac!!!
That acoustic sounds amazing
Great lesson Carl!
The BEST lesson for this tune on UA-cam! THANK YOU CARL!
You are a great teacher. I am just learning guitar and found a lot of your videos very helpful. Appreciate it!
Hi Carl, Wow a real winner here! Loved it. Fleetwood Mac is often overlooked for their guitar skills by many. Great lesson.
Thanks, my guitar teacher is teaching me this. I am supposed to practice it this week and your video is helpful.
Juanita Thomas u could just watch UA-cam videos
This song makes you change some of you chord fingering habits. Very good practice. Thank you.
That acoustic sounds amazing
Hey Carl- heard this song today and decided to learn in. Thanks for the lesson on this great song!
Great lesson and arrangement. Best I've seen for this song! Thanks!

Awesome lesson. I learned best from this guitar teacher! He is the best!
Really appreciate these videos and your time❤️🙏
Dude, awesome tutorial! I love this song so much
Always great easy to understand/follow lessons thanks so much!
Thank you so much, I’ve wanted to play this for so long. ❤
Another great video. I love your attention to detail. Thanks again!
Carl, you rock buddy! Thanks for the tunes!!
Very skilled finger picking, Thanks for sharing this. Guitar World has a version with Lindsay Buckingham himself playing this on a Martin Acoustic, tuned 1/2 step down, and he does a slow instructional 2 minutes at the end of the 8 minute video. Shows an alternate ending to what he explains as the "live" version - you will love it.
Thank you so much!! Super interesting and perfect arrangement
Such a nice job and explanation. Thanks!
Hey dude, this was amazing. Maybe sometime in the near future you could possibly do a lesson to the landslide solo. Thanks man!
great lesson - great one to learn some travis picking - thanks for sharing!
This is such a great lesson!
You broke this down in sections very well.
Thanks so much Carl. Great lesson
Great lesson as always thank you so much
Great lesson Carl!
Nice video. Clear and simple.
Dude you've laid down a great resource of learning Fleetwood Macs Landslide. Providing good chords along the way. Cheers.
Really nice. Thanks, brother.
Nice one mate, first time Ive played this one here in 2020
Awesome lesson, thanks
you're a sick pup! keep the Jeremiah lessons coming.
Most Excellent demo
Hey Carl, nice video! thank you so much I've been looking for a great tutorial video and yours seem to helped much more than the other videos! but, I would like to know what type of acoustic guitar is that you're playing with the video, much helpful thank you!
Your lessons are fantastic!!! Any chance you have a lesson on These Days by Jackson Browne?
Great lesson thank you
Great sounding guitar
Excellent. Thanks.
Thanks for the lesson handsome!
thanks for the lesson broski
I like your playing it's more precise and articulate 😇😊
I had to Sub..👍
Could you do a lesson for The Chain by Fleetwood Mac?
Did anyone else get absurdly lost when he went over the bridge / chorus? I really wish this video were a bit longer and broke down the centre bit a little slower. I felt like the beginning of the video was much more detailed than the rest. Everything after the intro just feels rushed. However this is still BY FAR the best and most beautiful tutorial I've found thusly. Overall great job!
It sounds wonderful! I wish you had given us the tab, as I am a beginner.
best tutorials
Hi Carl. This is the first of your videos I came across and I eventually became one of your Patreon contributors. Do you think you can do a video for this Landslide solo so I can finish the song? I am struggling with other people's videos and tabs.
Thanks!
Great lesson! Could you do Buckingham's Stephenie in open E as he played it? Would pay for that lesson as can't find the tab or lesson anywhere
That is a beautiful sounding acoustic, I can’t make out the type though. I’m looking for a new acoustic and I would like to try one like that out, but I need the name
Great Divide
I appreciate the tutorial. However, I was really confused about the chords. I feel like it was explained well maybe a visual as well?
I agree
I thought I was dyslexic while trying to read this sentence

Can you do a video on big love (the live version)
It's been my ambition to learn Big Love (Live) for many years. I actually started to learn how to finger pick because of that song. Would love a lesson
I absolutely swear I can hear something else going on in that picking pattern! Gonna put my guitar down and come back to this later on!
Thanks fo much for the lessons just looking to perform it live with a female singer I was looking for little lead and fill Lindsay does when he plays it live would you be able to come out with that I would really appreciate that as I use your video all the time again thanks so much Gabriel
You could add some variation on the chorus by using a F#/D7.
Thanks for all your effort. Could you do any Tommy Emmanuel song for the next one? Thanks again.
you play great
Thanks Carl, that was brilliant, and I can now play it without having to blufff it ! ha ha
any vids on the electric solo portion of this song? im having a ton of trouble finding it.
Would love to get a lesson on lindseys version of big love
Will you teach the solo to this song on the acoustic guitar, not up the neck where people play it on the electric but down the neck
Nice 👍🏼
Make the solo please Carl :)
Jack frost feels
One of if not my favourite movies of all time, I can watch Jack Frost over and over again
Carl taught me everything I know Carl rules
Badass!!
@ counter marker 4:46 Lindsey Buckingham doesn't play that particular chord arrangement. He plays e flat on the B string instead of the F note and the B string. That's the only mistake I can find in the whole lesson. Thank you for such a great tutorial.
I’m confused about the picking after the Am change?
I’m confused about all the picking lol
BTW what guitar are you playing in this video?
Thanks Carl!! You're D Man!!! and a fabulous instructor. Thanks for sharing!!!!!
Hey can you do a lesson of So Alone by Radio Moscow
Can you please do ten speed from Coheed and Cambria
nice one.,can you pls do smashing pumpkins version..thanks
What make of guitar is Carl playing here?? It sounds great
Not sure if you will see this. Is there a reason you play the 2nd string with you let middle fingers? It feels more intuitive for me to play it with my index finger.
0:50 -verse
3:40 -chorus
Oh my God thank You! Will definitely be learning this when summer begins 😊
+upcauseway Don't wait! Do yourself a favor and put some mileage down on those neural pathways--muscle memory!
+Patricia Harding Might be handy for end of school exams!
upcauseway Best of luck to you! I did the best on exams when I let my mind go blank when I didn't know the answer right away, and then wait for the information to find its way to me. Haha! My cat is helping me type this by lying on my arm!
Could you teach Sorcerer by Stevie Nicks?
Can you do never going back again please
I feel like you could’ve explained the finger positions a lot better. I’m stumped. You’re a great teacher and other videos don’t get close to what you’re doing but I’m just not getting one part. Thanks though
Can you make a lesson on Lindsey Buckingham's acoustic version of Big Love.
How come my pull (on the B) off doesn’t sound like yours? I even double checked that my guitar was in tune because it sounds so much lower but it all checked out so I’m wondering if maybe I’m doing something wrong?
If your using a capo sometimes it will pull the strings to be sharp or flat. It could also be intonation or the nut could be sticking
Are you going to tackle the solo ?
does it matter if you do thumb alternating or can I just use my thumb and index using middle and ring on the g and b strings? that's much easier for me to do!
I tried too but it sounds better with the thumb in my opinion. It's easier but believe me with some practice you'll succeed :)
Thumb bro, only the thumb .... and you will learn a new muscle skill as a bonus.
Is this any different from the smashing pumpkins cover?
