    I am 62 years old and have been playing for 45 years, and I have to say Justin is probably the best teacher I have seen

      Hendrix is the best teacher I've seen.

    • @firefeature45
      @firefeature45 9 років тому +18

      Shamrockrancher Yes, because Hendrix went out of his way to record hundreds of free and accessible lessons, break down basics, techniques, notes, strumming patterns, etc., and present it in a structured curriculum for other players of all skill levels to learn from, right?
      I think I get what you're saying, that Hendrix is one of the greatest guitar players ever, and people could learn a lot from watching him, but seriously, he's the best teacher you've seen? Give me a break.

    • @Shamrockrancher
      @Shamrockrancher 9 років тому

      Eric Martin No, because he approached the guitar with quite the unorthodox style. He had the balls and instinct to make the guitar work FOR HIM. He played it upside down. He LISTENED to what he was creating, not following some book. What I wrote may be too hard for you to comprehend. He was a wild mustang with both his life and his guitar playing; unrestrained. Peace.

    • @firefeature45

      Shamrockrancher It's not too hard for me to comprehend, but thanks for the ad hominem attack (the first tool in a kit of someone who wants to argue but has no basis for their argument).
      I don't disagree with what you're saying about Hendrix. I understand that part. I disagree with what you're saying about Hendrix being a better teacher. Perhaps you'd like to offer some context as to why you disagree with all of the things I listed, but I suspect not.

    • @Shamrockrancher
      @Shamrockrancher 9 років тому

      Eric Martin My context 'lesson' is simple: Be unconventional. Be yourself. No constraints by society, guitar lessons, "guitar teachers". I do appreciate your not so cleverly disguised attack on me. Nothing like getting the rabble roused.

    Justin, I actually learned most of this watching him in concert, but watching your lesson puts the few pieces of the song I was having a problem with into perspective. I don't move my fingers when dropping into am7, that's how I watched Lindsey do it. Great job on this one.

    hmmm.... have you actually listened to this song Justin? That "flick off" which you spend so much time describing how to do, isn't part of the song. It may happen now and then accidentally, but you can clearly hear that it's NOT an intentional part of what he's playing. Watch Lindsay Buckingham show you how to play it... ua-cam.com/video/v_P2KO05YZc/v-deo.html right about at the 6:40 mark

  • @yourworstfan
    @yourworstfan 5 років тому

    I know this video is quite old, and I don't know if you still read or respond to comments here, but I wonder if you have a suggestion to fix a problem I'm having. I can make the C shape well enough to strum the chord, but when I pull my second finger off the fourth string, my third finger mutes the now open string. It is virtually impossible for me to get my hand in the right position so that doesn't happen, and when I do, I get a good bit of pain in my left arm. Angling the neck up higher makes fretting the chord easier but everything else more difficult, and with the size and shape of my guitar (it's a smaller acoustic-electric), it feels like a really unnatural way to hold it. How would you deal with this?

    e: ---------------

    D: ---0---- 0---
    A: ------------
    E: 2------2-----

    i went to justins web site to purchase one of his song books.
    in the sales video that talks about the book he holds up a
    soft cover, spiral bound book and even says "we ship anywhere
    in the world". when you click on the link you find out you've
    been lied to and its an eBook. and he isn't the one you have
    to purchase the book through. instead he directs you to some
    third party site that requires you to download their software,
    which doesn't work. i've tried three different times and nothing.

      The time it takes to learn something all depends on how much technique and knowledge you have in your head and in your fingers. Thank you so much, Justin! What a GREAT tutorial. This is so gorgeous, gives me so much joy and pleasure to play! My first time really committing to finger picking, so worth it. I have been working on this for hours and even woke up early on a Sunday excited to keep at it. :)

    It's so confusing without a tab, you could change one note in the song at the end and the tab is yours legally.

    Hey Justin! Is the more detailed (or unnecessarily complicated) tab available for us who did not purchase your songbook?

    You made this so much easier than I thought it would be thank you! You're awesome! Could you possibly do Cocoon by Catfish and the Bottlemen (Acoustic) as seen on /watch?v=OZTsxbrDPTo I've seen many people ask about it but there isn't a good tutorial on how to do it. I believe you're the man for the job.
    Thanks!

      on all the youtube videos sometimes the fingers are either just hovering or resting on a string already pressed down the neck. its a little frustrating at times. but its par for the course. I recommend getting an app/add on that will slow down the video to help get all the details. I use video speed controller on my mac. it works fine. Justin is one of the best if not the best teacher overall. I'm just a beginner but the frustrations are slowly improving. it takes alot of patience.

    Very good lesson, Justin; really enjoy the way you exemplify the playing. I have two requests for you: one is ‘leader of the band’ by Dan Fogelberg; the other is: ‘song for a winter’s night’ by Gordon Lightfoot. Thanks a lot for your lessons!

    Hey Justin, I have a simple question. Why are only two fingers used on the picking hand (i.e thumb and index alternating vs using thumb, middle, index, ring) I am a beginner guitar player and I find it easier to use my four fingers, is it wrong to learn this way?
