    In response to the "Squatting requires a lot of confidence..." question, I would say 20 rep sets of squats at 65-75% will get you over that hurdle. The squat is my absolute least favorite lift because I hate having a bar on my back. That said, I began incorporating 20 rep sets about 2 years ago, and not only have my squat numbers gone up drastically, I can now walk into the gym on squat day and not hate life. 20 rep squats develop confidence and character FAST!

    My first weightlifting coach in high school used to require each of us to get under just a little more than we could squat and get crushed to the safety bars under control on purpose at least once. That way we could have the experience and realize it's safe and it's not that bad. It got us past the fear first thing.

    Man, your dad's advice hit me hard. I grew up in a very stressed/tumultuous household, and have a very stressful job with stressed people, and tend to get overwhelmed. I have used the "head down and execute" mantra, and feel like it's changed my ability to block the idea of stress, as I am now only focused on the goal not the extra inputs from other people's emotional state. Just felt compelled to thank you, and your father, for this.

    Brian, I took your advice about chin position during front squats from a previous video - It made a night and day difference in my rack position! Another tip for front squats that helped me a lot, although slightly different from how Brian recommends is to really focus on protracting your shoulders forward as much as possible, and have the bar sit between your front delt and trap area on either side. Try to think of pushing your elbows up and as far forward as possible. You’ll know you have the bar in the correct position if you can completely remove your hands without the bar moving or rolling off of your shoulders. I personally try to get my neck out of the way as much as possible and leave the bar rest on the shoulder area because I have always felt the passing out sensation no matter where the bar sits on my neck. This is slightly different than how Brian recommends but it has worked well for me and can hopefully help someone else. The rest of Brian’s tips are spot on, you need an amazing brace and start by pushing those knees out. Front squats are amazing and you should figure out a way to do them that works for you

    one thing I have figure it out with squat deadlift or even bent over row that helps with feet and knee placement is when I am at the starting position and have my feet where they need to be, I put my body weight toward my heels for a moment then Flex my butt and it puts my feet in the perfect starting position. that is also before being under load. it only takes one or two seconds and it helps keep the form perfect. truly informative and awesome video Brian, always tremendously helpful and informative content bro

    For what I understand about the Rippetoe style it's basically the same thing you say. He words it very differently but the core of it is "don't have a vertical back, don't lean too forward either, sit back just a little bit and push your knees out". Then there's the hip drive thing and that's controversial but the purpose of it is to mantain back angle which is not anything weird.

    I completely agree with the breathing and bracing. Even with my most recent PR my spotter was surprised with how quickly I got out of the hole. I did slow down about half way up but it was even cleaner than my a few of my warm up reps. That's because I know I didn't brace fully enough with the lighter weights.

      I'd say your core and lumbar need more work not to mention your breathing and bracing but your B and B is hugely influenced by how strong your mid section is in the first place. Even more so It sounds like you are not using a weight you can command. You are putting yourself in a very bad place when the weight tells your body what to do instead of the other way around. Leave the ego at the door, lower the weight (even if you can lift it you should also be able to control it on the way down) and the add various core and lumbar in everyday and you will see a major differences.

    Question for Brian and anyone else really: Is there any reason to do hip abduction/adduction exercises if squats and deadlifts are already staples of my program, with Bulgarian split squats, sumo deadlifts, and lunges thrown in on occasion or as accessory movements? I'm wondering if weak hip abductors/adductor muscles could be a weak link and if training them more directly would have any effect on increasing overall strength. Thanks everyone.

    I have an sbd belt but i feel stronger squatting and deadlifting without a belt because the belt really throws me off. During the squat the belt causes me to lean forward more and i struggle to hit depth while during deadlifts the belt just throws off my technique. Isit because the belt is too thick for me, not seasoned enough or my leverages favour beltless lifts? I have more of a lanky limbs and a shorter torso

      No it´s not!
      As someone who has had spinal discs rupture on him 4 times and spending upwards of a year lying on a mattress on the floor without ever knowing if I would ever walk again narrowly escaping having major spinal surgery and my vertebrae stapled together until I could finally recover by the aid of a competent chiropractor during another very long year I can tell you that it´s NOT ok.
      If you can´t do it with perfect form you´re just not strong enough.
      Go one point down and that will be your actual PR,- everything is else is bro lifting.
      Leave your ego at the door.
      Your spine should last you your entire lifetime,- not just during your youth until you crash it.@@BrianAlsruheOfficial

    • @joshjohnston7388
      @joshjohnston7388 5 років тому

      I'm right in the middle, baby. If I let my lower back round too much, I pay for it. Maybe that's worth it in a competition but I gotta work tomorrow. But yeah man, PRs ain't gonna be perfect. Cat-backed? Nope. I let that baby go at an inch off the floor. Not gonna do it. But on a PR or top set of the day, I'll (personally) allow a small amount of rounding, but not enough to hurt myself. I know when to say "nope." When I am actually testing my PRs, I often test to failure, but my "failure" is when I go "nope" and put the bar down, or set it on the pins, or say "nope" to my spotter. I don't "ditch" a squat, I set it down. I'm fairly conservative about it. I still make progress. But that's me. I'm not an ""exciteable" lifter.

    What is your biggest tip for keeping your butt from shooting up in the beginning of the deadlift?

    • @99brug
      @99brug 5 років тому

      Arnie Lack it sounds like it’s a setup issue, Allan thrall has a great video about this very problem think it’s called, fixing your deadlift. But the basic idea is to set the bar over the middle of your foot, then by pushing your hips back get your shoulders just over the bar (slightly in front of the bar) with your elbows right next to your knees. Try setting up like that next time and record your set and it shouldn’t be an issue. Let me know how it goes

    • @bdlfitness7994
      @bdlfitness7994 5 років тому +1

      One thing that helped me was thinking of the deadlift as a leg press. My hips used to shoot up first, which turned my deadlift almost into a stiff leg deadlift, so the movement was mostly a hip hinge, and I was using all hamstrings, glutes, and low back. When I started to cue myself to leg press the weight up(some say push the floor away), my quads were activated more and my hips stopped shooting up. Also, focus on making sure your hips and chest come up together. Keeping your chest up and back/lats tight helps with that. When you lose tightness, you lose postural integrity.

    My front squat and back squat are both 340. Is my front squat disproportionately high or is my back squat just too low? I also primarily front squat, and max out on back squats every now and then just to see how it progressed.

    • @BrianAlsruheOfficial
      @BrianAlsruheOfficial  5 років тому +5

      Your squat should always be more than your front squat man, even if you rarely do it. It just sounds like you don't get enough reps of it to be proficient at the movement compared to your front squat.

      I have that on my lowbar squat as well and I believe that it's because of the hip mobility because my frontsquat works fine for me. If the squat hurts on the lowest part of the movement than you should know.

    • @deepakmahale7778
      @deepakmahale7778 5 років тому

      It could be because of your lower back and pelvic muscles are tight and that leads to rounding. As Brian said, not enough information, so just guessing. Record a video and send it to someone knowledgeable. Barbell Medicine (friends of Brian) channel on UA-cam does reviews for such videos, so you'll get good advice there for sure. Tip: Record from the side for squats.

      If you have an inguinal hernia, there is only one way to "fix" it unfortunately and that is surgery. (But of course defer to your Dr.) It'll only get worse over time. I had a double earlier this year and heavy (for me) squats were always very painful. It messes with your bracing as well since that's also part of the area where the hernia is. At the same time, I might have had mine for years and they were too small to affect me negatively. It wasn't until I felt them actually tear that I was forced to have them surgically repaired. You can keep going of course, but it will get worse over time until the inevitable.

      LCMcBain thanks man..so basiclly you can lift and train for strength now?Nice to hear that.its cool to know that you can continue atleast after you recover from a surgery.i stoped dong squats and deadlifts and im just working lil but of pressing and isolations beacuse im depressed not to workout but i think i will stop completly until i go through it because i dont want to make even more damage.its shure problem bracing i even think that it happend to me because i overthightened my belt during a squat.and couldnt brace properly.what a stupid mistake.im searching all over the web and yeah unfortunatelly only surical operation can fix it so you can get back to normal.Hope you are fine now and dont have problems with training.Hoping the same for myself.

      @@@jjstrength1846 Yes, I am back to full training. I did zero training for a total of 12 weeks; 6 weeks before and 6 weeks after surgery. Then I started slowly and I was back to full strength after about 6 weeks. As for you "mistake", that might not have had anything to do with it, so don;t beat yourself up. From what I've read, hernias are pretty common and are generally from wear and tear, not one single event. Some people are just more susceptible to them. You'll be fine and back to healthy before you know it.

    I'm 16 squat around 370 for a max, been lifting for a little over a year and recently I've been feeling weaker and could barely get 355 up for 1 today when I can usually get it for triples I've never done a deload and almost always go heavy 😅 do u think its time for a deload ? Btw i squat twice a week

      You're quite young so probably worth easing up anyway, but it could be anything, could be diet or new stresses. Most heavy strength needs a well working central nervous system rather than the muscles themselves, so you have to look after all of you. As your body is still growing be careful not to overload yourself either. You could just do some hypertrophy work for a while just to make a change and give your nervous system a rest. As it's only a year you could have just reached the end of your linear progression and will need to start changing up your routines. Just some thoughts, it's not going to kill you to take it easy for a little bit anyway :P

    So you're saying no barbell in hands on the front squat? that's contradictory to whats taught in the sport that has arguably the best front squatters, Olympic weightlifting. You cannot argue their technique is inferior when a 65kg chinese girl is front squatting 300+ pounds.
