I honestly thought Gorr was the creepiest villain we've seen in the MCU. I said it on a previous video and I'll say it again - the scene where Gorr is talking to the Asgardian children he's kidnapped gave me major Hannibal Lecter vibes. Christian Bale did a phenomenal job in that regard./ The problem was that it felt Christian Bale was putting in an oscar-worthy horror film performance, and everyone else was doing a full-Taika comedy performance, and there was a massive disconnect between the two.

I think you are confusing creepy with menacing. James McAvoy in Split was creepy, because he acted in a very strange way and you weren't sure what he was going to do next. Lecter was menacing. Every time he was around someone you knew that person was in danger, even when he was locked up. When he did things that were out of the ordinary it wasn't because he was weird, but because he wanted to get a rise out of someone to study them and get in their heads. Gorr in the comics was proper menacing. Gorr in the movie, significantly less so.

You can't do the same with Thor because the narration of Thor and Gorr is that of the audience, the audience has to see that this is actually Gorr and develop both the character of Gorr and Thor. Just got home from the theatre. If I completely discard the comics I had a lot of great laughs. Unfortunately, a two hour movie felt like 30 minutes of true story. I enjoyed the way they did Jane and Gorr as far as origins. However fitting the entire Jane Foster comic line in one fast paced film felt off. I loved Christian Bales acting, but again the MCU struggles to implement the sheer POWER of these villains. How are we to take Celestials and God’s seriously going forward if they can’t truly scale they’re power correctly to unstudied viewers. This is my raw thoughts immediately after the film. I only know what I know about Gorr because of this channel, and I think I carried that with me into the film and it had pros and cons. On the one hand, I understood the tragedy of Gorr's backstory a little more and so I could extrapolate more empathy out of his character and relate to him more, which made for a more compelling villain for the first act. But the con was, knowing how much more powerful he was in the comics, I kept having that feeling of like "I should be more afraid of him than I am, he should be way more of a threat and this should be drawn out across multiple films not just the one" which lost all the momentum generated in the first act. I didn't think Bale was bad, thought I have a gripe with the makeup, less for the accuracy thing though that is an element..more just because I'm tired of aliens in movies not looking like *aliens*. I'm tired of various shades of pink and blue and grey humanoids, it feels lazy, uncreative, and like a cost-cutting measure more than artistic direction.

Thor 4 is a waste of a movie. I knew right away they were going to waste Gorr considering Jane’s Thor was going to be in the movie and Marvel didn’t do anything amazing with Gorr in the movie. Why cast someone as Bale to just kill him and that’s it… it’s pretty much Malekith 2.0. Malekith had more screeentime and if we are going by evil characters in the MCU then Johann Schmidt aka Red Skull played by Hugo Weaving was the most evil character besides Arnin Zola and Baron Wolfgang Von Strucker played by Thomas Kretschmann which were also wasted characters.
Thor in his solo movies is terrible and a complete clown. The Russo brothers were the ones that did justice to Thor in Avengers Infinity War & Endgame.

They honestly could have just made it into a tv show, making it like invincible, with the comedy, but slowly getting darker, with us learning of the God’s, from Thor, and Jane’s adventures, as the comedic side of the series, but also through Gorr. Gorr could have been telling the stories of the God’s he’s killing or torturing, with us hearing of how mighty they were, learning of their pros, and cons while seeing them at their lowest point, with Gorr, and his army just humiliating them.

Gorr, I'm going to be honest, I wanted his comic book accurate appearance, because when you have aliens that look just like humans, it just seems too boring, because even though you know that they are NOT human, it just seems like a human vs human fight, with powers, so for an alien to have a unique design, it kind of drew me in more, and personally I wanted that, however he was changed, and since I can't do anything that I can do, then I just accept it, I won't exactly like it, but I will accept it. Now I'm not saying that changes are bad, like Darren Cross, being YellowJacket, instead of Hank Pym from the Comics, I'll be honest, that was awesome, I really, really liked it, at least that is my opinion, so not all changes are bad, but when you have a big Comic thing like the story with Gorr, that just drew people in, and had a lot of hype, like, "Oh my god, he is slaughtering thousands of Gods, what can Thor do !?" You want something like that hype, and so you stick to the original.

This story actually gave Gorr some character growth though and showed exactly why Thor is worthy, he understood where Gorr was coming from, he received the same treatment from Zues as Gorr received from his god (which imo was a better introduction for Gorr than the comic, in the comic he seems like a moron getting pissed at the gods for being too busy getting killed than helping his people) and Gorr realized not all gods are the same, Thor is the type of god he could believe in.
While the movie wasn't true to the source material (wasn't expecting it to be that true with Taika directing), but it definitely felt like a comic book movie and was on par with Thors cosmic adventures. It felt like I was actually watching a Thor comic in live action, with the exception that Thor comics usually lack comic relief (and it's usually provided by an outside character not Thor, I wish we would have gotten the Hall of Murder scene with an entire wing devoted to Odin scene) and have a couple big moments, I think they completely overlooked the reason for Thor being able to defeat Gorr is because his powers mimic the sing of the anvil and fires of the forge, which the earlier/earliest (the all back) versions of symbiotes are weak to.

That when Doom or Galactus or Apocalypse etc. someone on their level (even though Kang is great, I personally dont think he's THAT guy) finally appears, that they'll be taken care of with the utmost respect to their comic counterpart.
The MCU can be funny, because for those that it seems they don't deem worthy, the writing tends to be very sloppy and thrown together, instead of working to make that particular character BETTER, they try to make them make the audience laugh (case and point, Thor, Hulk, War Machine etc.)

Gorr needed the same treatment this movie should've been HIS STORY with Thor (Chis Helmsworth) being someone who really only makes a hand full of appearances just to establish what Thor is doing while Gorr is laying waste to all the other gods and I personally think Chris Helmsworth could've been cut entirely. It would've been far more interesting to have Jane Foster: The Mighty Thor being a scientist almost AGREE with Gorr about the uselessness of Gods like she doesn't know the horrors he committed but travels with him because he seeks to restore the life of his daughter which Jane finds noble.

Marvel should really try to write a movie in a similar way to how Taxi driver, Memento or even You the tv show was written… it would be super interesting to see and feel the struggles and the tragedy of a villain like gorr for instance where it’s more ambiguous about where the character we are following stands in the greater context of the universe. For example, you don’t realize that you’re following this villains origin story until the end when you and the character become privy to new information that reveals a huge answer about where they stand in relation to the rest of the established universe or even less subtly a hero you recognizes shows up in the third act or even in the final scene that connects it to the rest of the cinematic universe. From there you can even have a sequel about the clash between this villain character you actually care about to a degree (because you followed them for a whole movie) and another previously established character from the universe that you already know. It would have so much for emotion and conflict having both sides so fleshed out without their purpose being so reliant and dependent on the others existence. The codependency of hero’s to villains and villains to heroes is old and stale. Too often it seems like villains/characters are created simply to be an obstacle for an already established character and to me that’s starting to feel cheap.

I understand what you mean about being comic book accurate when it comes to appearance, especially with someone looking as unique as Gorr, but also understand if they're not willing to respect the look of a character, the likelihood of them also respecting the very character itself seems low. Shame, cause Gorr is one of those characters you HAVE to get right.

How is hating on Thor L&T the popular thing to do, when ALMOST ALL popular comic movie review channels are saying it’s good? Maybe the people are tired of the cap. I’m an MCU STAN and I almost walked out of Thor L&T. In the beginning of the movie, Thor literally rode Storm Breaker like The Wicked Witch of the West!!
Please stop gaslighting fans. A blind man can see that Thor L&T was GARBAGE. Thor 4 is the modern day “Batman & Robin.” And I hate to say it, but I’m finally concerned about the future of the MCU.

Listening to you Gor sounds like what would have happened if Job had gone insane from his suffering. I haven't read the comics or seen the movie but I would be upset if they went lite on that. He doesn't compare to Thanos as far as I can tell. They have different motivations and would act completely different. Gor would be more of a horror villain. Dark. Gor should be saying exactly why he feels the way he does and his exacting retribution would be cold and brutal. For Thor to defeat him he'd have to look deep and even then I think it would be very difficult and Thor would end up in bad shape. He wouldn't be the perfect glorious hero at the end of that battle. There'd be damage.

You’re spot on Rob! Spot on! I felt with Gorr they had the potential to make a two part movie, where the first ends with Thor being beaten or captured by Gorr to give a cliffhanger to Thor 5. And that’s where he over comes Gorr and has a newfound understanding of what it means to be a God. Would have been a great way to end the Thor character arc. But Marvel doesn’t know what to do with villains.

I agree. After watching your videos and breakdown of Gorr, I was really excited to see him in live action and thought Marvel was going to make him one of my favorite villains but I never felt like Thor was in trouble but rather felt the focus of the film was Thors relationship with Jane…which was great but Gorr felt like a back story. I wanted to be on his side while at the same time feeling like he had to be stopped, but rather I felt he just had bad luck, went crazy and needed to be stopped. More scenes of Gorr from his perspective along with him killing gods and why while still building on the relationship with Jane and Thor probably would have been great. I didn’t really connect with Gorr like I thought I would. Like I did with Thanos until End Game. Hope that makes sense.

Marvel should introduce their villains in their own separate movie before facing off with the heroes, just to give the audience the feel of how big of a threat they really are, then have them face off in a hero movie. Would be nice to see how they got so powerful and menacing before they get killed off. Christian Bale was amazing with what he was given in this film.

When he was in the movie, Gorr was quite good...The problem is that he's not in the movie enough. Also, as good as Natalie Portman was in this movie, Jane Foster should not have been in this movie. That should've been its own movie. If they had focused on setting up Gorr's backstory a little more, instead of reintroducing Jane, Sif, and Valkyrie (and introducing a new character in Heimdall's son), then this movie could've been a great movie. As it is, I enjoy this movie a lot. I'm gonna go see it again before I give it a score, though

I totally agree Rob. I came out of the movie thinking the comedy aspects just felt weird in relation to the concepts they're showing on screen. I would have liked to see Gorr going around killing more gods sure, but I think you're right in just showing him killing more god's wouldn't have helped. They needed to show how Gorr and Thor are opposites.
Also I was REALLY hoping they wouldn't kill Gorr and I was even more surprised/confused how they just blew up the necro sword.

Your right Rob, I hope the makers of marvel are not losing their creative steam. I always thought that the mcu overall story, and trying to keep all its connectivity between stories, would eventually get to hard, and they could potentially fail. It wasn't a bad movie just wasn't what I expected.

This film needed another 30-40 minutes to build up Gorr and the storyline more. I honestly didn't mind the comedy, even though it was a bit too much. The main problem was they sacrificed story and character building just to spend more time on comedy. And that made the film unfulfilling. They theoretically could have done both had they made it 30 - 40 minutes longer.
But also , Taiki is clearly not the best at blending moods.

The problem for me is ever since the first iron man film is that heroes are killing off their villains. My favorite villians that I really like that felt like badasses in their own way are 1.Thanos 2.Killmonger 3.Hela 4.The Vulture and 5.Green Goblin

You NAILED every single complaint I had with this movie. I had a good time with it, but Gorr is not the type of villain that belongs in a comedy simply due to his backstory and ideology. That’s why the film felt kind of jarring to me.

I really respect Rob approach to saying everything he can possibly say without saying “I didn’t like it”. I’ve basically have taken the same approach anyone asks me because everyone I’ve talked to is excited about Love and Thunder. I remember watching this movie last Thursday and thinking to myself 45 minutes in, “They’ve gotta take Thor out of Taika Waititi’s hands”. Now, I read comics as I’m sure most of Rob’s viewers are also comic book readers. I never want to be “Well in the comics” guy because they’re the worst kind of people. You should enjoy these movies for what they are because it’s a separate universe. With this said, as a comic reader, this has to the one time we’ve gotta be disappointed. This video by Rob was well done and to add to it, Thor also had a history with Gorr. If I remember right, Gorr was captured at one point in Odin’s Dungeon when he was a kid and Thor snuck down there was Gorr creepily spoke to Thor and it actually scared him. I hope I’m remember this right but that’s the kind of seriousness and creepiness I wanted to see because Thor’s not really scared of much.

Random idea that I had: you could actually have Gorr return, and he be the Gorr that no one ended up taking seriously and he wiped his universe of the gods and goddesses. Then he learns about the multiverse, and that is the Gorr that is more along the lines of the comics version and it takes everyone Thor knows and more to stop him

This should have been 2 movies. Within the 1st movie tell two stories. The story of Gorr and the story of Thor. In that story maybe have the giant GOd that was Thors friend involved more in this story. This movie could have been fun and lighter. But I would say Involve Beta ray bill and maybe the enchantress. That would be on the Thors side then on the other side develop and see why he is called the God Butcher and actualy show him slaying some gods. Maybe have the 1st movie end when they meet and end just as Gorr killed the Giant God. Thor in a Rage rushes at GOrr and the movie ends just before they clash. Thor 5 would be the bad ass clash we've been wanting to see. Thor gets his ass handed to him and barely escapes with his life. He realizes that He could actually die. That tone should carry throughout the film with Gorr seeking to use the God Bomb. Then eventually he and beta ray bill and some Gods from thor 4 gets massacared trying to take him down With Thor ulitmately winning but at the cost of the life of Sif and Korg. All that would be left would be are the two brothers in arms.,Beta Ray bill and Thor. or something like that. its 12 am and im hitting the sack. Sleepy thoughts. Just saw the movie today and while I liked it just fine They should have had more gravitas and less jokes. I think Tiaka should step down and do the FF or antman which would be more his speed at this point.

I loved Christian Bales design. The final battle felt a bit more realistic than it should’ve been. I think the comic book design would’ve been a bit distracting. He actually looked terrifying. And his emotion in the beginning and end was just perfect.
