  • Namor is coming to the MCU! There have been some leaks online recently regarding the character of Namor making his first appearance in the MCU and what that would look like exactly. Are they changing his origin to differentiate him from DC's Aquaman? In this video, "Black Panther 2: They're Changing Namor's Origin?", I go over the Namor leaks and discuss why I think these tweaks to the Namor character are being made. What do you guys think? Are you excited to see Namor appear in Black Panther 2? As always, let me know your thoughts down in the comments below!

I don’t think we need the fully detailed history of Atlantis in the movie. Look at Wakanda for example. We got less then five minutes of their history and everyone was good with it. Having Atlantis in the MCU would be a good fit because most people already have a general understanding of the myth of Atlantis.

Maybe no Atlantis history, but connecting it to fallen city of Tenochtitlan in South America was never in the comics and frankly makes little sense! Why reinvent the wheel, better off leaving it alone, Atlantis was a mythical mystical lost place in human history.

Honestly the name "Atlantis" alone is enough explanation. Basically everyone has at least a rough idea of what it is. Just have other characters react with "wait, Atlantis is real?" "That mythological sunken city?" "I mean, we've met Norse Gods, so... sure..." and you're there.
If you want to bring in some of the history, you can have someone ask why it was really sunk, for Namor to answer with a brief "collateral from when the Celestials stomped out the main force of Deviants...", which draws from concepts already established in the movies. Anything more in depth would only be important if it becomes relevant to the plot, so you can wait with the exposition until then.

What if, instead of a documentary about past Marvel history, you had a show about an in-universe Indiana Jones-type character who went about trying to uncover various pieces of forgotten history? They don't have to be a superhero themselves, just have adventures adjacent to all of these old secrets of the past. Then they could run into Atlanteans or whoever else might be lurking out there. I think that could be a really cool way to expand on the world of the MCU in yet another genre. I've always loved those types of shows/movies. Just a comedic romp through history.
You could make it even more fun by having the character based in the same museum that Steven Grant/Moon Knight works at. I mean, it could even be Layla. Given that I think she was really well received, it could be a cool way to expand on her story beyond just being a Moon Knight sidekick.

But, unlike Wakanda they kept totally isolated and hidden from the world. Never interfering with the affairs of the rest of the world unless they directly threaten Atlantis. Which if I remember correctly was basically Namor's comic book origin. That what humans were doing became a threat to Atlantis so he wages war on humanity. Anyways, that's all you would really need to tell the audience imo.

Rob, you’re trippin. As others in the comments have echoed, you can *DEFINITELY* fit enough Atlantis backstory in whatever amount of time Namor will receive in this movie. Marvel has been getting lazy/sloppy lately with its storytelling. And each time they do they get further away from the source material. What is frustrating is that they expect fans to simply forget earlier blunders (ex: a giant Head/Hand sticking out of the Indian Ocean) and accept whatever nonsense backstory they present to us all under the guise of diversity and inclusion.
    Im done with Disney/Marvel.

Just throwing this out but the “event” (triggered by the Deviants or Celestials) that separated Pangea and the choices Atlantians had to make to go west or east to populate seems like it could carry a couple of movies. One focusing on past (when the separation occurred) and another movie starting at the blip and moving on? Sounds “new” to me. Wayyy to invested in the MCU ugh!

Nah I’d say having Atlantis would still be a good idea. Just have them be an isolationist kingdom with technology more advance then wakanda just hidden beneath the waves. Maybe throw in that the city once resided in the middle between the continents but had moved to off shore of the americas which sparked rumor that it was el derado. Maybe taking a pathway through some underwater lakes (look them up it’s not a typo) or rivers you find hidden underwater paths to Atlantis. Maybe part off it connect to South America and Florida and that’s how rumors of men having eternal life and calanders of death predicting the stars came about. Unlike wakanda, Atlantis did want to help a little while maintaining its secrecy. Only problem was they didn’t give too much help before the colonization of the americas began, so they went back into hiding since the new humans clearly had advanced in technology aside from their American counterparts.
TLDR: atltanis is just wakanda underwater, they moved the city off the shore of the americas secretly. Watched as the humans on land in the americas hadn’t progressed much technology wise. Decided to help them some to get humanity back on its feat “they thought” then as the humans from across the sea which had advanced (in comparison to the natives) came to the americas, they recognized that the human race was capable of advancing on their own so then they duck back into hiding minding their own business again.

Namor goes way back to World War 2. The Invaders team first appeared in flashback stories set during World War II, and comprised existing characters from Timely Comics, the 1940s predecessor of Marvel. Originally, Captain America (Steve Rogers), his sidekick Bucky (James Barnes), the original android Human Torch ("Jim Hammond"), the Torch's sidekick Toro (Thomas Raymond) and Namor the Sub-Mariner were together as heroes opposing the forces of Nazism. When these superheroes saved the life of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill from Master Man, the thankful Churchill suggested that they should become a team, known as the Invaders.
The Invaders fought the Axis powers over the world until eventually finding themselves in England, where they met Lord James Montgomery Falsworth, the original Union Jack. He joined the team and provided them with a base of operations in England.[2] Eventually, Falsworth's children Brian (Union Jack II) and Jacqueline (Spitfire) became members.[3] The team later added Miss America (Madeline Joyce) and super-speedster the Whizzer (Bob Frank), during a battle with the Super-Axis.[4] Later, against the threat of the Battle-Axis, the team was assisted by the Blazing Skull and the Silver Scorpion.

Central America and Africa aren’t exactly “neighbors”. Not to mention the fact that S.H.I.E.L.D. already has Atlantis off the coast of Africa. So unless we’re gonna a long massive underwater tectonic plate shift that move Atlantis across the Atlantic Ocean, it make less sense than undoing history and canon, because they’re worried about a “They copied DC” label.

Interestingly, the earliest account of Atlantis' existence came from Plato's Timaeus and Critias, where Plato quoted a Greek statesman claiming to have found stories of Atlantis from the Egyptians. The Atlantians supposedly had the same gods as the Ancient Greeks, even though their history was recorded by Egyptians. Some claim Atlantis was founded by Atlas, but it's unclear whether the myths meant the Titan or some other guy named Atlas. Robert Graves claimed that it was the titan Atlas, and even claimed that he was Poseidon's son, even though Atlas was supposed to be the son of Iapetus and Asia. Atlantis tried to conquer other parts of the world, and that may have led to their downfall. When Atlantis lost a major sea battle with Athens, that's when the Greek gods sank them. Plato may have made up Atlantis as a philosophical allegory, but it ended up dominating the imaginations of people for centuries. Atlantis' story is still retold in science-fiction, fantasy, horror, and superhero comic books to this day.
I like the idea of Black Panther 2's version of Atlantis being Mesoamerican than Greek. It would've been interesting to see Atlantis as Egyptian than Greek, too. Some stories even had Atlantis be Egyptian, which makes sense considering that the Atlantis legend supposedly came from Egypt. I'm curious how different the Mesoamerican Atlantis would compare to the Atlantis from the Namor comics. It would be far out if Namor's Atlantians started as a fusion of Ancient Greek and Mesoamerican: that would result in one intense deep sea civilization. I wonder what the Mesoamerican equivalent of Poseidon and Atlas could be. Gukumatz of the Mayans, Chalchiuhtlicue of the Aztecs, and Mama Cocha of the Incas sound like awesome equivalents for Poseidon. Instead of losing to Athens, this version of Atlantis could've lost to the Mayans, Incas, or Aztecs before their gods sank them.
I've yet to study the full lore of Atlantis according to the Aquaman or Submariner comics, but I am impressed with how the backstories were told in the comics I've read. The history of Marvel's Atlantis and Lemuria is pretty nuts, even for their early comics. It amazes me to this day how the classic Marvel writers wrote such elaborate backstories for their world. The lore for DC's Atlantis is interesting, too. I don't know how Namor's story will be exactly told in Black Panther 2, but I'm eager to see how it plays out.

You are on point my man. Explaining the universe in a TV series it's just how all the comics got where they are in present day. When I was young and growing up there was no movies there was nothing but TV series. all kids back then were addicted to television. And we didn't even be inside as much as the kids that are in the house today up under a screen. All the movies supposed to do is compliment a story it's not supposed to be the entire story. You either created origin story or you explain the origin later after the movie. Either way it goes expanding the universe cannot be done with just movies that's a huge risk to take. Which is why I don't understand why DC isn't doing any good because they wasn't putting their heart into their TV series content. No way should they have had to scrap all that CW stuff. I just think it's just being lazy. Just like you look for talent for actors you need talented writers. Fresh new riders with new ideas new ways to explore. The world loves what Kevin feige is doing. Just hope he can put it all together right. It isn't impossible to make billion dollar movies if your critically thinking the process out. Everybody is not going to read the comics but everybody will watch TV shows.

I think it's too big a change. Namor is from Atlantis. That's his defining trait. Saying they don't want it confused with Aquaman's mythos is the tail wagging the dog. Namor came first.
Tying him to Central America instead of North America is ok. Skipping the entire Invaders thing in WW II - great. Making his country being a small colony barely half a millennium old, founded by a few thousand people? No.
And if they want to differentiate him from Aquaman, making him the son of a human and a princess? Bad idea.

I don't see how you don't mind them changing the original details of his story, like the ww2 stuff, but then do mind the new stuff they have been trying to incorporate into his story for awhile now, as his character is just extremely old fashioned and lackluster. Also he's frankly neither popular nor well liked, so a makeover to his character is overdue imo

@@LilNika117 We already sae WW2 in the MCU, and he was not there. Kind of hard to insert him now. If they had dropped hints here and there in prior movies, I'd have no problem with Namor being a veteran of that war.
But he's Namor, king of Atlantis. It's like Steve Rogers becoming mexican, or Wolverine becoming french, Ororo Monroe becoming scandinavian.
Namor's kingdom has a lot of baggage associated to the name, and no other sunken city of folklore can match. It's important to the character, if nothing else, to explain his arrogance.
And it's funny that they are making those changes so people don't think he's a copy of Aquaman - that could be dissociated from Atlantis without losing much, by the way.
To expand on the last point for those who are not into comic book history: Aquaman was an almost blatant copy of Namor. The greatest difference was that, unlike the Avenging Son, his original origin (try saying this three times fast) didn't include Atlantis.

I think this might be a red herring for the movie. Like a “Namor discovers his heritage” like an after school special 😂

I was just thinking of the idea of bringing the Atlantis in the MCU and realised, that we got a huge thing with the Eternals. So we know that celestial (forgot the name) got killed, but his birth SOMEHOW??? caused the "awakening" of Atlantis. Maybe there was the time when Atlantis was as advanced as modern Wakanda and something caused the "death" of this land (check out a multfilm about Atlantis). Or at some time there was a war between Atlantis and Wakanda and that's why Namor will be the antagonist of the future movie. I don't know but this thing with celestials got me thinking about this theory.
