- Reed Richards made his MCU debut in Doctor Strange 2: Multiverse Of Madness in a shocking cameo from the MCU's Illuminati! John Krasinski had been a favorite fancast choice for years by the general public and now that we finally got to see him portray Mr. Fantastic... the reaction has been mixed. In this video, "We Need To Talk About Reed Richards", I go over my thoughts on John Krasinski's Reed Richards cameo in Doctor Strange 2 and compare him to Reed from the comics. The Reed reveal seemed to get the biggest reaction in my theater. Lots of gasps and cheers. Not sure how much of that is for the actor vs the character, but I’m confident John can pull off Reed in a larger role

@@ryaniswhoiam5695 I saw both opening night and NWH had an energy I haven't seen since Star wars episode 1 premiered. The only time the crowd came alive during MoM was for the Reed Richard's reveal.
John Krasinski has the potential to be a great Reed Richards if they will give him a better script to work with. He was nerfed on about the same level as the Vision, and Reed was basically brought in as horror film cannon fodder as far as the plot of Dr. Strange 2 went.
Fanboys often blame the actors, when many times it's really the fault of the writers and directord.

The ENTIRE Illuminati died in the STUPIDEST WAY POSSIBLE! They each literally stood in place when Scarlet Witch killed them!
He nailed the part, but the story undermined his character's intellect. Theres no way reed would rush into an attack w/o analysing the threat 1st. Also he wouldnt giveaway strategic points that could be disarmed. He is also one to use battle as a last resort, like giving galactus the ultimate nullifier to appease his hunger than trying to destroy him. I think the screenwriters failed in that regard
completely agree, they made stark this way so they should not have had an issue doing the same here

@@PoloFreeman They were a far advanced version than 616, with knowledge of Multiverse and Darkhold, and Vishanti. 616 Wong fully knew how powerful Scarlet is (the one uniter, or one destroyer). Yet somehow the council of this advanced society (who was able to deploy a fully functional and non-broken Ultron army) did not and underestimated her by letting her know their trump card?
I think he did what he could with what he was given. As for the writing, I didn't understand why one of the smartest men in the world was picking a fight with someone with access to a power that defies the laws of science. It sure seems to me like that version of Reed could really use some more de-escalation training 😂
That group of the Illuminati was arrogant and you could see it. The way Black Bolt smiled after Reed said he could destroy Wanda with "one whisper." The Illuminati introduced Reed as the "smartest man" in the multiverse. They also seemed to single-handedly beat Thanos on Titan which I assume lead to their arrogance. Even their world seemed more pompous.

Reeds appearance, along with Professor X we're huge moments, and i love how he played Reed but i didn't like how he told Wanda about Black Bolts power. BB isn't the strongest but he definitely is an Ace in the hole cause you aren't expecting this concussive force from his voice. Had Reed not said that, they might have stood a chance . . But that's just me
I wholeheartedly agree that these characters were misused and Reeds intellect and capability was nerfed in this film for the sake of plot development.
Especially when you consider theyre from a universe which not only has extensive knowledge of the multiverse and magic but is an advanced society with an ultron defense system, yet even their base of operations which should be the most heavily guarded fortress seemingly had no defense systems outside of a few ultron bots.
You mean to tell me they had the technology to completely nullify doctor stranges powers but had nothing prepared to deal with wanda?

I felt this way but then I changed my mind when I thought about how they were underestimating her. And that also was the body of an innocent Wanda they didn't wanna fight.
I disagree with his intelligence being questioned. Again in HIS experience the biggest danger to the multiverse was Strange, not Wanda. He clearly was overconfident in that moment to reveal to his opponent that she has no chance, underestimating her. Being smart does NOT mean being immune to making mistakes, and in that moment Reed Richard’s made a mistake. That doesn’t lessen his role or impact to the story. It’s not a plot device. Over confidence is a real human flaw, which is where this Reed instantly becomes relatable.

The tech Reed uses to teleport in his opening scene looks like a very early version of the TVA portal things from Loki. This makes sense due to Nathaniel Richards, aka Kang being the first to developed portal tech from dimension to dimension as stated in the last episode of Loki.
Maybe Reed knows about Kang The Conqueror?
I feel like they 100% tested him out in this role. Seeing how there is a multiverse now and they can easily recast him in the MCU universe. But I really think he could be good. I really want an approach to him being a strong leader and smart guy instead of this guy that doesn’t everything by himself. Fantastic 4 is a team unlike a lot of other teams.
Really good way of looking at it. I actually didn’t consider it being a test at first but now it makes sense and seems like a hopeful way of looking at the actor and character

Seems like theyre characterising him to be the same as in xmen vs avengers comics where he and the fantastic other 3 are like the neutral party.
mcu is generally known for its epic bombastic fight scenes and cgi everything. so it will be a miracle of getting a reed richard movie that's more about him using his intelligence as the fundamental of the story.

I felt like John did a great job as Reed with the little dialog he was given, I was kinda bummed out that marvel didn't take the opportunity to introduce a new black panther as a member of the illuminati, woulda been cool to see a new black panther and start the idea of a new actor/actress portraying the role of black panther.
Eh, they would have just killed the character anyway.
Maybe their afraid of peoples reaction to replacing Chad. I don't think Chad would even want the role to stop, and imo neither would the fans.
I think someone like John David Washington could be really good as a new T'challa.
maybe Killmonger or Shuri BP and establish the idea that it's more of a title and the consequences of Endgame not happening are maybe not so great.

I don’t think they brought across how influential the dark hold was on Wanda conveyed its impact on her mental state. Do you think this is the reason it felt her transformation was so out of the field in comparison to WandaVision? If you think about it in WandaVision she felt guilt after the events, it was Hard to picture how she went from that person to the person in this movie. With that in mind you have to use the dark hole to justify a lot of the almost absurdity of her drive. Curious your thoughts

I agree. It undermines the resolution that happened in WandaVision. The movie should have been more focused on Wandas transformation back to ‘EvilWanda’ While a second plot occurs where we see Dr Strange sensing this power and we get more visuals of alternate Dr Strange’s
Eventually they see that the breeches in the multiverse are being caused by Wanda and then a conflict breaks out- they go after Wanda- Wanda doesn’t come after them.
It’s Wanda who then retaliates and when she does we see that transformation- maybe they could change her physical look to emphasise that change

I mean that's definitely part of it they mentioned that the dark hold does things to you when you use it it essentially took the grief of her kids an exasperated it.
I agree that first hour into the movie I was left like where the hell did this from from? Like they should have either showed what the dark hold did to her or show us more of the grief the reliving of the nightmare she spoke about like actually drive it home, always remember to show dont tell

I think I myself want to see more of John Krasinski as Reed Richards; I think there’s still potential for him to own the character like Hugh Jackman is for Logan/Wolverine.
I think he was great as the character and that people saying he wasn’t just wanted to see him do more. He wasn’t supposed to be a major character in the story they were telling so he came off as lackluster. It’s just that plot point that disappointed people. I liked it, plus Reed shines best when he’s with his family.
Effron or Edgerton as Wolverine.

@@SuperRONDALE I someone agree but it was a bad scene overall that ruined Reed Richards in it and Reed Richards was straight up dumb in that scene. He tells Wanda exactly how to defeat their best fail safe. That and when Wong sells out the multiverse are easily in the running for the worst scenes in all of phase 4.
Ryan Reynolds is the biggest owner of a comic book role, let's be honest here. He even shares the same interests, sense of humor and country of origin. Patrick Stewart was just obvious for many reasons but as we know he was replaceable, Reynolds is not. Not only will he reprise the role but somehow still be the exact same character as the last movie.
I think he done well in the role, John will be a great Reed Richards when he gets more to do and interact with the rest of the Fantastic 4 in their own movie. So I’m excited for the future and the best we can do is wait.

This isn't the Reed Richards we were expecting, this version has already done things that keep him up at night. The MCU version can be a completely different character.

@@kangtheconqueror8359 I know, I said this because there was some comment in the video about people not being happy with his portrayal of Richards.
That's why I think he might also end up as a different actor, plus having the ability to cast someone younger to have them around for a lot longer. Casting Krasinski for this might have been a nod to all the fan casting for years now.
JK performed really well based on how his character was written. If given the opportunity to provide more to the story, he would've stood out more.
I like that Reed tried to empathize with Wanda saying he had a wife and kids cause thats how he is in the comics very family oriented and tries to understand both sides even though he treats Sue like shit sometimes lol

If Dr.Strange had a nightmare of a version of himself dying you know Reed Richards had one.

People need to understand, this could've been anyone in this role. Him playing was absolute fan service. It was more about seeing him in the role that fans have been pushing for years than it was about his acting. That's aside, he did a great job and I would LOVE to see him continue as Reed Richards. Hope he writes and directs FF

I think his reveal as Reed Richards was the greatest part of the entire movie
i completely agree with your take on it feeling like John was "acting down", but i think the reasoning behind it is probably because he was added in through reshoots. being brought in at the last second, and (i dont know exactly how this shit works, so im guessing here) having to do your takes on your own and have them spliced into the movie, probably affects the strength of the acting. i dunno, just a guess.
it's a comic book movie it's an easy cash in that requires little to no effort as fans will just melt due to the character ... that's why ... most of the MCU cast act much better outside of the MCU Tom Hiddleston is a fantastic actor yet in the MCU he acts like a cartoon character lol
Reed’s reveal was on par to Professor X’s. It was insane for a crowd reaction. Their deaths were actually responded with “No!” And “OOOOF”. People were excited.

I'm hearing some negative opinions about him as Mr Fantastic but come on guys let's be real. He didn't exactly have a very big role to play in Multiverse of Madness and I think what he did do with it was great 👍

I loved John as Richard. He was my first choice. Sounds like people are judging him by the 5mins of screen time he had. John is a GREAT actor! He can make you feel emotions without saying a word. Look at the office or a quiet place. We haven’t seen Reed yet. In MOM Reed showed compassion by warning Wanda. He didn’t realize how different she was from his universes Wanda.

Remember, this Reed Richards is just one of countless other versions of him in other universes. If Ben Cumberbatch can be Dr Strange in all other universes, why can't John Krasinski be Mr. Fantastic? This film was just to test the waters. I'd love to see him and Emily Blunt in Fantastic 4. They have the same chemistry on screen and in real life. Quick, Marvel. Do it before they get too old!
I can't figure out why all of the doctors are basically the same with the same story but other characters like Loki and Spiderrman are so different.
@@jaynekranc8607 well I mean Loki can take whatever form he pleases tbh so that makes sense and Spider-Man is explainable because they brought in the other actors that played Spider-Man before the mcu was a thing
I can say for myself that the disappointment felt was because it was like a tease. I had no idea of the rumors or anything, but he came on screen and it just fit, but it was so very short lived. Time and writing constraints is what left me wanting.
However, the entire IMAX sized theater was silent for the entire movie. Then he pops in and everyone lost their shit cheering. There were -far- more people cheering for him than even Xavier, which blew my mind. I was so sure Prof was more popular, and boy was I wrong, at least on that day.
It was short but I think we can safely say his coming back in the actual FF movie so I can forgive it. Also I didn't John would actually take the role

Same. My theater lost it at him showing up. I think people are pretty used to Xavier, plus we already knew he was coming. But there were way too many of those other x men movies and they didn’t age well.
Damn what theater were u at with all those Morose people. . Everyone was cheering for Everyone and everything at the theater I was at. They cheered loud for Xavier black bolt and Reed. I can't say one was more then the other.

I can't agree with him "acting down". When Wanda asked If the mother of his children was still alive, you can see him accept his fate. He was a man that knew exactly what was about to happen. And he did it with a subtle facial reaction.
Thing is, I’m not entirely sure how they’d handle the Fantastic Four in the MCU, because they confirmed in Multiverse of Madness that Reed and Susan have had kids, which means FRANKLIN RICHARDS is canon. And for those who don’t know, Franklin is basically the Luke Skywalker of Marvel, a mutant so powerful he once recreated the entire multiverse after it was destroyed. And due to this, they’d have to keep him sidelined entirely or else every villain from here on would just give up immediately since basically nobody but cosmic entities like Infinity, Oblivion, the Living Tribunal, Beyonder and the One Above All could beat him.

The smartest man in the multiverse tells Wanda, Blackbolt's power. While knowing what Wanda's powers are. Krasinski was fine.
I think John Krasinski has a great deal more to offer for the character than what was portrayed in DSMoM. Theres a multitude of reasons why this cameo didnt really work.
1. Reed Richard's is an extremely studious and introverted character that habitually gives off a bad first impression. Its impossible to capture his full personality within a short time span due to his reserved nature.
2. The plot scenario used for him was just ridiculous trying to pass him off as the "smartest man alive", yet writing him as if he were the dumbest and most vulnerable man alive. In the comics this was the man whos intellect challenged some of the most prominent villains in Marvel, including Doctor Doom and Galactus.
3. Bringing in a new face to play a cameo character thats meant to be killed off is a mistake. Xavier worked better since were already so familiar with Patrick Stewarts version of the character, so very little explanation is needed. Same can go for Captain Carter and Black Bolt, since they both have references to go off of. If they wanted to bring in a Mr. Fantastic for a once off, they shouldve brought back Ioan Gruffudd. I think bringing in John whos character has a potential future in MCU (and a very pivotal one at that) just to make him human cannon fodder was a bad play on Marvels part.

Totally agree about Ioan! And I am somewhat puzzled why Rob reiterated the same point (and nearly the same sentences) about JK as Reed like 5 times in the video, basically saying very little, without doing a comparative analysis of the three people who have played Reed on the big screen. He's usually better than that. I think A LOT of people would have been very happy to see Ioan reprise his role as Reed.
@@Elurin Yep, it wouldve been a faithful nod to the fans who loved those films despite their flaws (myself included).
Reed Richard's could be a very prominent figure in the MCU, comparable to that of Iron Man and Doctor Strange. I think his inclusion could bring forth the next big overarching premise of marvel with either the Secret Wars, or Galactus and Silver Surfer. And to start this version of character off on such a sour note left a bad taste in the mouths of F4 fans.
This was your chance to showcase JKs capabilities for the role which was squandered and treated like a joke.
he was also only in the movie for 10 minutes, so it's hard to say whether or not he's a bad Reed.

The main post was stating why it’s hard to tell whether John Krasinski was a bad or a good fit for Reed...and that it was hard to tell because John did not have enough screentime to show his full portrayal or what he do with the character.

I have an issue with the illuminati fight in that Black Bolt's first move is his master stroke. He can physically go up against hulk or Thor, and he instead goes for the attack that would atomize her and most likely half the building they are in.

When it comes to Wanda killing Maria, during that sequence, you can clearly see (it is pretty fast though) Wanda pulling Captain Marvels power out of her. Her face mask starts peeling off with red trails of chaos magic pulling power out of her. So yes, Wanda DID take her powers and crush her with that statue. That's why Maria was so surprised when she put her hand up to block it but didn't move. She thought she would just blast through it like usual.
Exactly it was fast and minimal but it's already been established scarlet witch can absorb powers via Wanda vs Agatha. People who didn't see captain marvel's power costume disappeared it's they need glasses.
I dont believe she took her powers away I believe her wandas powers just pulled the mask back. There was no indication she took them away. I dont believe this was highlighted with other characters other than maybe america chavez which she failed at. And it should have been easy for her if that was the case. Plus how come she didnt do this with everyone she came across
That'd be cool IF CPT Marvel's suit was a product of her powers then yeah the face mask peeling off would be a pretty good indicator of Wanda taking her powers...but since it's not...

Nah @Gojira Wins Wanda didnt steal her power, she made captain marvel blowout a massive amoutn of power and basically making hear weak and not rejuivenated hence why she was able to be crushed. Wanda and Captain Marvel are both powered by Infinity Stones, doubtful she was sapping her power

I wasn't left feeling one way or the other. It wasn't a big strong role that required a lot. He looked and sounded like Reed. He had all the hubris and thought he could just talk Wanda down. But this wasn't a big display of the character and his nuances. So I don't think there was anything to love or hate about it
I feel like John did a great job as Reed and I'd personally would love to see him again but next time I'd like to see them allow his character his full intellect.
I'd also argue that you're talking about Wanda killing characters that have been developed over the course of years (in the comics) vs. characters the movie developed in less than than a minute. So yes, the deaths of those Illuminati ARE less impactful on the audience.

Krasinksi did fine. I think the writing/directing for him was underwhelming, and intentionally. Hopefully we will see more him under a more focused story
F4 is the last movie of Phase 4, so we're gonna see them in the next few years. I hope they really do the F4 justice and don't drop the ball.
I'm just excited to see what the MCU can do with the Fantastic Four.
To be honest, the MCU needs to focus on Reed himself, and then slowly introduce the other 3 like Marvel did with the Avengers... rather than all 4 at once. imo

Just appreciate that we got what we wanted, John did amazing! In the role, he had the right tone, he had the right mannerisms. I personally screamed along with others in my theater. I will love to see him in the fantastic 4 movie and I hope I do, as well as playing reed going forward
I think the dullness of Reed matched the world they built within that reality. Beautiful utopia environment, but the citizens themselves seemed pretty dull themselves with their grey attire. Really every character in that universe seems very dull, but I think that was the idea there. When we finally get these characters in the 616 universe that’s when more of their personality will shine.
I think he would be an amazing Reed and I really hope they keep him. I will say tho… the fact that ALL of the Illuminati died in 5 minutes makes me wish they were never in the movie to begin with. No way home was so great because the “cameos” were integral to the plot. I think 2 of the Illuminati should have stayed with strange to help at the end of the movie. They’re appearance should have been more than something to put in the trailers and that’s kind of what it felt like.

He is a great Reed Richards. I thought that he had no time to flesh out the character and we were stuck with a shell of a character but in a 2 hour movie he will have time to develop the character. I can’t think of a better person to play Reed.

Can we all just remember 838’s Wanda likely hadn’t learned about her powers the same way 616 Wanda did. 616 Wanda had to lose everything, subconsciously control and torture an entire city, have Agatha show her what runes are, and fight Agatha in a anticlimactic final episode battle. He was probably thinking she wouldn’t be a threat because 838 Wanda was still on par with Civil war Wanda and didn’t have to learn all the things 616 Wanda did just to survive. 838 Wanda lives in a paradise where she isn’t forced to learn more about her powers because the big threat to the universe, Thanos, was handled by the illuminati so she could just live her life peacefully with her soon to be divorced husband and two kids. Also Reed’s intelligent but not street smart. He can handle a battle of wits, but if he needs to fight someone more powerful than him who he underestimated, he for sure loses.
Reed is smart enough not to give away the advantage he has on his enemy, whether it is through street smarts or book smarts. I believe that was just poor writing on their part.

I read the scene as Reed being arrogant, thinking they were all more powerful than one scarlet energy ball thrower and revealed Black Bolt’s power to threaten her and give her a chance to save herself from her self-destruction, but she gets the most threatening target out of the way before he even knows what her powers are so she can deal with the rest quickly. Wanda is more powerful than most characters in the universes we’ve been shown, so either way she would have killed everyone in the Illuminati

The power I'm referring to here is Black Bolts', not Wanda's. Having no idea about Wanda's powers makes things even worse, because Reed has even more reasons not to tell her how Black Bolt's power works. It's like being assaulted by a stranger and during the fight, telling them when/where/how you are going to punch them. You don't have to be a genius to understand not to tell your opponent what you're planning on doing. This Reed is stupid. That or the writers are dumb.

I think John Krasinski did well (with what he had) and will make good use of the character as tome goes on. I believe you're right if he gets to write or direct it and really put his spin on it we might see the best Reed yet! EXCELSIOR!
John did great in this role, the way he acted was just like how reed was in the comics hopefully we see more of him in later films. Reed and Maria probably shouldn’t have died ofc and even professor x probably should have lived but ultimately makes sense why they were offed.
When the Fantastic 4 comes out, I hope John gets to play Reed Richards once more ^^

He did well with what he was given in introducing the character. I enjoyed his portrayal of Reed. Overall, this film was great.
He was how I expected Reed Richards to be, way too confident and totally aloof to the danger being heralded to him.
Unless Reed Richards in comics can see the threat, he's never prepared for it.

John looks and sounds like a version of reed. I think the direction and writing in this movie may have limited what John can do portraying Reed. I think when the actual FF movie is out we will get a version of Reed that will be close to comic version but with some different attributes and it will obviously give John more screen time to flesh out our MCU Reed Richards.

The only channel I give money to for a reason. Rob may not know what goes into making fine cinema (But he is a connoisseur of comics!) but this is the only review i have seen of this movie that isnt political, it just judges the movie on it's merit. Thank you!
The only issue I had with this depiction of Reed is the fact that he seemed a little stupid. I mean he gave away Blackbolts gimmick like an anime character and he didn't have any precautions preemptively put in place besides Ultron bots. For someone who is canonically the smartest individual in his universe he acted a little stupid.

i understand that in the end wanda could have killed them but they could have made things more believable if reed at least put up last minute magic dampeners and wanda had to fight weakened until she could destroy them
or if reed teleported the ultimate nullifyer to his position but wanda was quicker and got him first but those 2 scenarios would have shown that reed is still a genius and was fully prepared

Maria's mask being dematerialized was a visual clue to tell the audience her powers were either being absorbed by Wanda, or were simply being exhausted. Normally, her powers make provide her with a nearly invincible protective aura. Obviously, if her mask is disintegrating, the protection her power usually provides is failing.

I think Zac Effron could be a amazing Johnny, kinda the same build as the comics, decent age gap (if we get Krazinski as Reed), and bonus he can sing which is another trait of Johnnys (he has the voice of an angel.)

I was never a comic book reader. But I loved Blade as a child. I loved Blade as a teenager. And I have rewatched it couple of months ago and what a blast I had watching it.

I think where they lost me is with that goofy costume that John K was wearing as Mr. Fantastic. It just looked off and he looked uncomfortable. I was really unimpressed with the Illuminati reveal even though I was initially really looking forward to it. Hopefully they will improve upon these character representations in the coming future.
we need to see reed have room to be smarter than literally everyone. Like we know strange, peter and iron man are smart but reed is a whole other level, we've gotta see him be casually the smartest person in every room. cant wait!

All I know is when Reed Richards appeared, the theater I was in cheered. I never even considered Krasinski as Reed, but when I saw him it made sense and it was brilliant casting.

Krasinski as Reed was amazing. He played his part pretty darn well. It is just a shame that the whole movie was a convoluted mess. I agree with your points on _Avengers Disassembled_ and _House of M,_ but this film was supposed to be about Doctor Strange facing the consequences of his actions from tampering with the Time Stone as well Multiverse in _No Way Home._ Yet this film is more like a sequel to WandaVision.
What consequence with the stone? Spider-Man he definitely fucked up there but he didn’t do anything wrong with the stone. In the first movie yeah he almost did what strange supreme did and destroy the universe , but he didn’t. And peering into the future so they can win isn’t bad either

Regarding Rambeau, I think the reason she didn't have a dramatic and clearly shown death like the others was just because she didn't die. When I saw it, I just assumed she was unconscious. They don't spend much longer in that universe.

I'll admit that when I saw Krasinki's performance of Reed in the theater, I felt it was anemic and completely lacking in personality. I felt that Krasinski just lacked any presence or gravitas needed to portray this character in a leadership role. But I've started reading more comics after viewing Strange 2, and I have to admit, that I might have just been ignorant of the character - Reed in the comics I've read comes across just as dry and lacking in seasoning as Krasinski in Strange 2. So, I'm willing to give him another shot. I think the character can definitely played with an angle where he's more interesting, so if JK does end up writing F4, as you mentioned, maybe he'll be able to do a bit more with the character.
The problem was the writing, as John Krasinski is an incredible actor. They knew he was only in the film for like 15 minutes so they didnt really have enough time to establish his character/ they didnt try to make him believable.
On top of that Reed is an incredibly reserved and socially awkward character that would appear to have no personality, especially within the span of 15 minutes. He does have a good personality, but it comes out in subtle ways and through sarcasm and intellect that can't properly be captured within a short time span.
Characters like Charles Xavier already had characterization from like 5 films to go off of, we already knew a great deal about his powers and character, like cerebro, so they didnt need to "make up" anything.
Thats not the actors fault that's the writing. I think if they wanted to kill him off this way they should've brought in Loan Gruffudd.
Like you stated, Reed in the comics has always been kind of bland personality wise. John is a good actor, and his role(in this film) was cemented, nothing more than to be a tease and served his purpose which was to get spaghettified by Wanda. With better material, he can be so much more than the stoic science guy like he is in the comics. I have faith in John, he's been gunning for this role for years.
