• The Batmans of the 90s...
I bumped into Joel Schumacher when I was visiting Universal Studios and we were in LA on our way there - I was a child and Forever had just come out and I was of course wearing my Batman shirt. I walked up to him and said that Forever was the best Batman film I had ever seen - he turned to me with a huge smile and said “why thank you little man, I’m so glad you enjoyed it!, that means a lot to me”
I’ll never forget that moment. Rest in peace Joel 🖤

Still want a Director's Cut
I need it
@@dbog5214 How could they release the '05 edition with deleted scenes and not put a Director's Cut on it at the same time? Goldenthal's score for the giant bat scene would've been epic
Nope.
The Version we got had to be pretty close to Joel's vision. He was hired to make it more pop and less dark from the start.. The Writer was acting like the intent was to make it more dark.. That's BS. The studio asked for a lighter Batman..
he is dead
Although Joel got the reception that he did from people, his visual sense of directing was immaculate. What I loved about his Batman films was how colorful, flamboyant, and most importantly FUN. Please don’t forget he himself could only do what Warner Brothers ALLOWED him to do.
RIP. Great Director.
Yeah but WB got too much invold they should have let Joel do his thing

Don’t care what anyone thinks. The batmobile was sweet as a kid, and the sonar suit is still one of the coolest on screen suits. Returns suit is still my favorite.
I didn't like the batsuit in Returns. I prefered the rough scruffier looking abdominal section on the 1989 suit. Returns was still awesome though. It really complemented the original film.
@@silvervalleystudios2486 The cowl was my problem with the Returns suit. I don't what it is, maybe the ears, but it doesn't look right, whereas the first looked great. Affleck's suit is my favourite though.
BVS is my favorite Batmobile, but when I envision Batman having a fan fic race with Dominic Toretto of The Fast and the Furious franchise, look no further than the 1995 or even 1997!
Personally I prefer the ordinary suit over the sonar suit.
The RETURNS Suit was the best-looking... it was Practical(armor shell), Form- fitting(instead of fake musculature), cool looking without looking Over the Top. Edit: My Point?-it was believable basically.
20:48 This is why we need that Directors cut.
RIP Joel Schumacher. I love Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. Those films were a huge part of my childhood.
Me too!!!
Batman Forever was the first Batman movie I seen in the cinema, I was six and I still love it.

Batman and Batman Returns with Keaton, better than Clooney and Kilmer combined!

This actually made me reconsider Forever.....and feel bad for Joel about Batman & Robin lol
I still really like Forever and would like to see a more serious, psychological cut of it.
WolfThornn Holtzklau This^^
It wasn’t Joel’s fault.
Forever was a necessary recovery from Returns. Batman & Robin, on the other hand, I would have preferred the original '66 Dynamic Duo if they were going to camp it up.
Poor Bill Finger, he should've been there.
Well at least he passed long before either of those movies came out, especially Batman and Robin. Although, it would be interesting to see how different the Batman movies would be if they consulted Bill Finger, or even Jerry Robinson, alongside Kane.
He died in the late 70s.
He's got his justice: he's now credited as co-creator with every new Batman creation now.
@@sheski4909 Batman Forever is harmless fun but lacks deeper depth because of the removed Batman subplot scenes about him losing his memory and finding he needs Batman again. Jim Carry is funny from start to finish in Batman Forever and Val Kilmer is fine. Batman and Robin though suffer from the problem sequels get called excess they take everything that was fun and entertaining from Forever that worked in Forever and overdoes it in B And R. Batman and Robin was trying to capture the spirit of the 6os show but also trying to go even bigger with what worked in Forever. What you end up with is pretty much a movie for dumb children. Batman 1989 and Returns are Burton doing his take a Dark slightly crazy loner Batman that is only slightly less crazy than the villains he chases. Then we got Nolan's Dark realistic take and Snyders more comic book extreme dark take. Now we have Matt Reeves's upcoming Detective thriller noir type, Batman.
I REALLY REALLY want to see the Schumacher Cut of Batman Forever.
Although I walked out of BATMAN and ROBIN, I loved BATMAN FOREVER and still do. To take what Burton did and take it into an entirely refreshing direction was amazing. I don't think Joel Shumacher gets enough credit. Would love to see a restored Joel Shumacher Director's Cut of BATMAN FOREVER.
I had this on VHS and my brother and I watched it so many times. Jim Carrey was the best part. "Caffeine will killa ya!"
Nicole Kidman was so gorgeous in Batman Forever. She was first celeb crush as a kid. Loved Kilmer as Bruce Wayne/Batman he was underrated. Jim Carrey was great as Riddler
My crush was Kim bassinger from the first movie 👍
For Christmas two different years I was given the Box Sets of the 4 Batman Movies. I saw every Batman Movie from Batman 89 to The Dark Knight Rises on opening day. Then went back to see them as crowds died down.
I want to see a NIGHTWING movie done.
ALFRED: “Can I persuade you to take a sandwich with you, sir?”
BATMAN: “I’ll get drive-thru.”
Batmobile drive thru prank
To build on that, what is it with the openings of the Schumacher movies and Alfred asking Batman to take food with him?
@@sheski4909 they had marketing deals with McDonalds

Watching this documentary again made me realize where Andy Muchieti was surely inspired for the first appearance of Keaton's Batman Batwing in the next The Flash movie. The way Val Kilmer's batwing is hanging in the batcave is too similar to the way it was shown in the flash trailer, only upside down
4:15 I love that Joel Schumacher asked Tim Burton's permission to direct the film
I absolutely LOVE Batman forever, grew up with it! At least Val took the role seriously and Jim was a great riddler. As for Batman&Robin.. Well, it’s famously bad but to be fair, it only works as a kid’s film rather than a straight comic book movie
It was technically marketed as a kids and comic book film.
Joel Schumacher's Batman series weren't the best, but were definitely fun to watch as a kid, the villians stole the show, thoroughly enjoyed watching the goofiness of how they were portrayed, loved the dark gothic feel to the film's, though for me, Batman 1989 and Batman returns did this very well.
RIP Joel Schumacher 🙏🌹
Schwarzenegger’s one liners are the only reasons I like Batman and Robin
@@CagedSUPERMAN must say, Freeze, Ivy, Two Face and Riddler had some great one liners.. they were having the time of their lives. 😆
True as a kid i enjoyed the movies, but as an adult i hated them
I bought a Mr. Freeze Funko Pop! today.
Forever had a combination of Burton's darkness and still paid homage to the Adam West series without overdoing it. It worked well. Batman and Robin was just a complete disaster. I cant believe it wasnt rewritten. Who at Warner would have approved that script??? The franchise was on life support by then anyway. Three actors for four Batman movies. They were running out of villains. The storyline had lost its luster. It needed that eight year break and Nolan's vision to bring it back.
It's also soooooooooo much better than the follow up, Batman & Robin.
To be fair, it really was.
Tom and Jerry all
I disagree.
Clooney is better than Kilmer. I didn't even remember a single line from Kilmer's batman.

Best soundtrack, best cast, great Director, eccentric and the mood was indescribable in the best way possible.
Batman Forever was pure fun and the visuals were really cool and I love the bat-mobile, it was truly Saturday Night Fever on Acid lol 😂
I personally loved the film and favorite song from the soundtrack “Kiss From A Rose”
#releasetheschumachercut
These 2 Batman films are what got me into acting and entertainment. Most people who diss these films over them not being “dark enough” don’t truly understand that Batman has an infinite amount of layers to him, thanks to the many decades he has of existence under his belt. He had both dark AND light stories such as “The Dark Knight Returns”, and “Rainbow Batman”.
And as for the Batnipples, bat credit card and neon lit Batmobile? The Batnipples still don’t worry me. In fact I think it adds more detail to what the 1989 suit brought, and the card and Batmobile is still pretty badass!
It was my dream to be Tim Drake in a film next to Chris O’Donnell as Nightwing with Michael Gough, Pat Hingle and Joel Schumacher around to help out. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be. Rest In Peace to the latter 3 men. I miss you guys, even though I’ve never met you guys. Y’all are all the reason I have an Associates in acting.
Kilmer's Sonar suit was amazing.
''Micheal will always be Batman'' Right-o, George!
if only tim burton if not lazy when he selected by WB to working make 1989 Batman film and want to cast the actor who was not so well-known at that time George Clooney to become Batman😑😤😑
@Vino from a pure physical point of view, your point is very well taken, I truly would envision Batman being a lil bit taller than Michael was..mind you, tho, when it comes to him donning the cape and cowl, the guy was intimidating af. Why do people hate this movie, i loved it as a child
I've never hated it, but the original script of Batman forever was way better and it got scrapped. I think people were disappointed by what could have been
Batman Forever was the first Batman film I seen when I was kid, having spend Sunday mornings watching Adam West. It was like a soft introduction to a dark Batman story. Really got me into the character, thanks Joel RIP

RIP Joel, thank you for this movie ,it was my childhood
6:26 Michael Gough is the best Alfred. Sure other actors who were great as Alfred but Gough is the goat! I grew up watching him
There have been a lot of great villain lines from these films even the Schumacher ones but for some reason one of my favorites is from Danny DeVito in “Batman Returns” when he takes over the bat mobile n says “Welcome to the Oswald Cobblepot school of driving. Gentlemen, start your screaming!”
I love that these films knew what they were trying to be, unlike the newer ones where I feel like there is a complex to what they are trying to be. In the end, these are carnival comic book films an there is nothing wrong with that.
Joel didnt have to apologize. The executives who green lighted everything need to apologize.
But before the parents do!
May not be my favourite Batman film compared to the others, but the art direction and set pieces are honestly innovative and amazing.
I'm so serious: Release the Schumacher Cut
WB have an nack for ruining directors, Forever is alright, I never hated it, but you can tell it was supposed to be more.
And because Tim didn't direct Batman Forever, we got the year before, one of my favorite films of all time, Ed Wood! It all worked out in the end. Well, until 1997 that is.
A lot of people would only notice and appreciate (or hate) Batman Forever because of what they see on a surface level. Try to mute the over the top performances of Carey and Jones, see past the colors and the eccentric costumes and sets... this Batman one-off is dark, perhaps even darker and complex than Tim Burton's take on Bruce Wayne's psyche. With Burton, the psychological case studies were his villains, though Michael Keaton's performance still outshines the actors that succeeds him.
I always thought the first Batman and the 3rd Batman where the best ones.
I genuinely like Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. My son is 3 and he loves watching both of these movies and I love watching them with him.
I liked them as a kid as well. Batman forever I can still watch and like but Batman and Robin and I can’t do lol.

@@budhengatma9375 I recognize every one of those words as English, but have NO idea what that sentence is supposed to mean.
R_eagan 1939 I agree although I think Jim Carey’s OTT performance as the riddler saved BF from being a total loss
Both were bad
This is awesomeeee
Wish the dark tone Schumacher was going for Batman Forever didn’t get removed. Val Kilmer’s performance would have been more consistent with the film rather than him being serious and fairly dark only for the film to go back and forth between light and dark. Batman & Robin is too campy for me. While that style worked for Adam West’s Batman, by the 90s people were more interested in a serious take on Batman not so much a new Batman done in a campy way. Studio interference had a lot to do with how Schumacher’s films turned out. Of course that’s not to say Schumacher didn’t have any hand in some of the light hearted nature of those films, but it’s clear from the work he did before and after Batman that he’s more of a dark filmmaker and I wish we would have gotten a dark Schumacher Batman. RIP Joel Schumacher.
I loved Jim Carrey as the Riddler, but I always wanted to see him as Joker. I loved Batman Forever as a kid.
What's interesting is that Joel Schumacher did have a darker, more psychological movie in mind for Batman Forever. But WB wanted something campy & light-hearted after the creepy Burton-fest of Batman Returns. Basically, WB wanted to be able to sell Batman-themed Happy Meals to kids.
WB was in a lose-lose situation with the public. Which is why it frustrates me to this day how the public constantly attacks the studio for this and Zack Snyder.
Batman and Robin is one of the few movies I've ever seen where I laugh so hard and so consistently that I'm crying for most of the run time. Love it or hate it - it's always entertaining to watch
R.I.P. Joel

LOL @ Chris O'Donnell saying _Returns_ was too dark...
I liked Batman Forever as kid and appreciate the unique vision as an adult. It really modernized Batman's campy origins and to this day had some of the most fantastical and whimsical performances/ set pieces I've ever seen. Batman and Robin really got away from them, though.
Batman & Robin part 2 with George (Batman) & Chris (Robin) would been great!
