I recently did mine and it makes your skin crawl pulling up that much thatch! I then fertilized and reseeded my lawn and now it looks absolutely amazing!
Ray your story has me excited for my next 3 months bc the last few years have been bad
@@DaBears08 Glad I could help. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
It's so weird but one of my favorite things is watching people pull all the junk and debris out of their lawn
Vacuuming the lawn is always fun
you ARE the lawn whisperer though so it shouldnt be that weird.
@@victorvaca2606 true 🤷♂️
Its damn satisfying lol
Checkout driveway sealcoating videos!
I have this exact same electric dethatcher that Ryan Knorr recommended. I was very pleased with the results and also kind of shocked how much dead debris came up. In a 2,600 sq ft section I pulled out over 1 and 1/2 barrels, imagine how much of my herbicides, insecticides, soil amendments (think GCF and Simple Lawn Solutions), fertilizers, and fungicides I wasted by letting them get trapped in that.
Nice! I just did the same thing and its amazing to see how much thatch it brings up, meaning the GreeenWorks and I now feel that my lawn is able to breath again. Now, just need to make sure it recovers, which I have no doubt, but I think I might need to pump a little seed into some of the bare spots, it pulled up. Thanks!
I did mine with the gas powered thatcher and got 8 full packed bags, then aerated it,,overseeded and top dressed it with good screened soil...best on the street
You have yourself one GREAT looking lawn and place there. Very nice!
Thanks. I really enjoy it
The flowers in the front beds are poppin'!
Great stuff Jimmy! Thank you for taking the time to share your vid!
Thanks for watching
Jimmy I dethached my lawn last week end it didn't look like much when doing it but had to empty the bag every 2 trips back and forth.I did use the E on the TM. I have someone coming to aerate this weekend and I'll overseed my tttf👵🤞
Dethatching. One of the most satisfying things to watch on UA-cams.
Love the Greenworks dethatcher 👍
Love it
I just did my front yard with my greenworks and got 3 and a half cans of thatch. I went over the yard three times. The last time at the lowest setting
I’m doing my first dethatch beginning of October, and I’m not looking forward to it. I raked a few areas and my goodness! Awesome video! And God bless you, all that material must have stirred up all sorts of stuff.
Looks great Jimmy.
Always crazy to see how much is hiding in there
Nice yard, nice hat and nice scenery!
I’m always shocked at how much dead grass is buried in there. The lawn is looking mint!
Its because it sits flat on the ground then gets wet and sticks to the ground like wet paper
Just bought a home, already obsessed with the thought of my lawn looking shitty. I’m coming for tips! Keep them coming. Good content. Easy walkthrough for someone who’s not owned property before
Thank you so much. And congrats on your home!
Good stuff my bro. Love it
Nice video mon! Looking good!
I just purchased this dethatcher and it worked great, reasonable price and easy to use, just watch out for those sprinkler heads.
I just buy it see how it works I am so excited 👊
Nice edit bro!
Beautiful lawn, not sure id want that kind of hobby, but looks great
Thank you
Tip for your green waste bin... as I dump into mine I follow up by using a 2x4 and compact the material. You'll be amazed how much more you'll fit in there. Almost double the amount.
Love it. Gonna remember that
His yard looks great so he must be doing something right. He also probably has an irrigation system:) What the heck is that song? LoL kinda cool. The words sound like they are playing them in reverse.
A little off topic but damn… that is an awesome view of the mountains you have!
Thank you! We love the views here especially when they’re covered in snow.
Awesome Jimmy, would of loved to have seen the final spray for the finish of the vid. I find the lawn stands up shortly after spraying the goodness:)
Look at Connor Wards lawn, it practically bows to him as he feeds it a healthy diet of every mineral and fertilizer known to man.
Looks good. Also informative! Why did you leave that sneeze in the video at 4:05 😂
Be prepared to see those 14" stripes for a while! I've mowed twice since and they're still more pronounced than my mowing stripes.
Haha yeah you're not kidding
The stripes are the added bonus.
Bless you!
Thank you! 😉
@Striperman 😂
Man, that train track is close.
My first thought was "ouch unlucky"
Never understood the short-mow craze. Increases the amount of irrigation needed, as well as mowing frequency and overall maintenance.
Love Utah!
I just bought an electric Dethacher to improve my lawn. It's Fall, so I was thinking of reseeding afterwards. Good idea?
Woaaa cok iyi video olmuş anlatm iyi
I Dethatched my lawn and got 7 jumbo black garbage bags of moss.
It’s time to start calling this what it really is lawn care folks. Power raking.
@4:06...bless you!
Thank you 🙂
Wow! what type of fescue is in your lawn. Green lush looking lawn you have.
Thanks. No fescue in my lawn. 80/20 bluegrass/rye mix
@@JimmyLewisMows awesome!
Hey Jimmy! Newbie here and so far i love the videos! Question though can you detatch St.Augustine grass? Mine was freshly laid around 6 months ago and went through the coldest winter we have had in 16 years in Florida then cold hits after that. Lots of dead grass (could also be thatch) still trying to understand what that actually is but i have some spots that are super green and nice looking but mostly dead grass with no life to it at all and it's sad looking and driving me nuts. I have no clue what to do. I did put on an fertilizer about 7 weeks ago and it greened it up some but nothing major. Any advice for a girl? I have never used any products you have recommended but definitely need something safe for kids and pets. Any help on which direction i should go would be amazing! My brain hurts as I have been trying to figure this all out while raking out all the dead stuff since I wasn't sure if detatching with the machine would make matters worse. Thank you!
I want that shirt 😂😂
What height was the dethacther set at?? People never mention that!
Whats the height of your greenworks dethatcher, 1. 2 or 3?
Hot damn.
I also have the Greenworks dethatcher. I did my lawns two years ago and pulled out 8 big bags of dead stuff. I have St Augustine grass. As it uses stolons to spread, you have to be careful not to rip the lawn out. Therefore, I removed every other row of tines, just to leave a space. That works much better.
Hey Jimmy--great video! You earned a new subscriber--glad I found your channel! Quick question: I see you have sprinkler heads in your lawn -- can you run over the Sprinkler heads (when not in use of course!) without doing any damage to the Sprinkler head or the tynes on the dethatcher?
Hey Tony. Thanks. Yes I don't find the tynes aggressive enough to do any damage to my sprinkler heads. My front yard has only one that is a factor, and it's been fine.
@@JimmyLewisMows Thanks so much for the quick follow-up Jimmy...really appreciate it! That's what I was hoping for...it'll save me from having to pull out my marker flags each time I use the dethatcher--I'm hoping to use it on a bi-weekly or monthly schedule starting this Spring. Thanks again and I look forward to catching up on your previous channel content.
I have a 10,000 sq. Foot lawn and got 12 wheelbarrows full of debris. I only did about 7500 sq. Ft. I did 2500 sq. Ft. Earlier and got 3 wheelbarrows full. Crazy!
Yes it’s pretty incredible!
Which grass catcher fits trhis model ?
Thought I’d be a tough guy and buy a hand dethatching tool. Just bought this dethatcher on Amazon. I’m spent and only got 1/5 of my front yard done!
I went the same route. Those rakes are awful.
@@JimmyLewisMows thanks for the well done video. I wanted some validation it would do what I needed before I bought it.
3 questions:
1 - How well did your mower do vacuuming up all the thatch you pulled up? Some people have been saying that a mower does not do very well; that their mower only vacuumed up about half of the thatch and the rest got blown around and re-entered the lawn. (Bought a Greenworks de-thatcher, haven't used it yet.)
2 - What kind of grass do you have?, ie, how hearty and thick is it? I have common Bermuda.
3 - How well did your lawn recover? Is it thicker/more hearty with the thatch removed now?
1 - My mower vacuums very well. Not all mowers are the same. I’ve used friends mowers for the same task and those mowers couldn’t handle it because they had poor suction. If your mower didn’t have great suction you can just use a plastic leaf rake.
2 - it’s a mix of bluegrass and rye
3 - lawn recovers fine. Just takes a couple of weeks or so. Bluegrass spreads so it does thicker up over time.
Jimmy were you not reel mowing at this time in this video?
Thinking of buying this model instead of the cordless Ryobi unit you reviewed awhile back.
My lawn is 4100sq feet, and feel the inclusion of a power cord pulling it along in the yard is worth it for a smaller yard like mine.
What are your thoughts?
Hey Troy. Was just getting started on my reel mowing journey here. Was in the process of lowering the HOC. I think I would rather recommend the SunJoe because I like the scarifier option that's included, and it's significantly cheaper than the Ryobi.
amzn.to/3sGxOnG
You didn't over seed your lawn after Dethatching it??? TIA
Should I dethatch now even though I dethached last October? The grass looks good now but the last 3 years my lawn builds up a lot of thatch in the summer heat. I just want to use it as a rake so the seed gets better soil to seed contact. Thanks.
You can do it every month.
Hey Jimmy!! I love your insights. When you did the second pass with the dethatcher, did you adjust the height of it or keep it the same?
Thanks! Same height on both passes
@@JimmyLewisMows Thank you for getting back to me!! I'm excited to be able to really take care of my grass the right way with your help
Just curious. I live in Massachusetts and usually rake my lawn in the early spring to get as much dead grass up as possible. Have you used this Greenworks machine in the early spring to do so?
There have been a couple or large, matted-down areas in the backyard coming out of winter that I've hit with this on a less aggressive setting and it was helpful.
@@JimmyLewisMows awesome. I was thinking about purchasing to save some time and energy raking.
Would it be possible to attach a car Jump Starter/Power Supply with a 110 Volt Outlet to the Dethatcher to get rid of the LONG Extension Cord?
Maybe? 🤷🏻♂️
I have a Zoysia lawn. The amount of Thatch I take out is ridiculous.
"not doing real mowing"
Proceeds to make his lawn into a fairway. Seriously, your lawn looked amazing by the end. Without any video set up how long would you say it took you to do the front lawn? Also, this is my first video of yours so you've probably stated in other videos but what's the specs of your own mower? Width, horsepower, etc. Thanks again for this video 🤌🏽
Does your timemaster have bog when you mow below level D? Mine doesn’t like it unless I side discharge. If I mowed twice a week it probably wouldn’t but it’s too damn hot for that mess.
I have only tried mowing below D the one time. Going to try again this weekend I think. Haven't had any issues with it bogging. Just started hitting the thatch layer. So I'm hoping the dethatch will help with that a bit.
Jimmy Lewis I think my problem is my grass is Bermuda and is too thick.
Ya Bermuda is a beast. Really tough stuff.
What model#/kind of toro lawnmower is that...looks very nice
Thanks. It's a Toro TimeMaster. I really enjoy it.
My greenworks detacher is too strong. Looks like its pulling out grass and thatch
It Needs to be much lower to properly de-thatch.
Wait.. are you from utah? If so I am wondering how you get your flowers to stay alive to well? My grass and vegetables are great but for some reason my flowers are only eh
Yes, from Utah. This video was published last Sept. Those flowers are watered daily. That's about it. Nothing really special other than they get a little fertilizer that doesn't make it onto the lawn. We enjoy those a lot.
Curious as to what height you’re at? You listed like 3 or 4 different height settings. D on the TM is 2.75” and E is 2.25”, yet you reference 1 and 3/4 inch? It would help your viewers know exact heights if they want to replicate
I'm currently at setting D. 2.75"
Jimmy Lewis got it. So you’re going to go from 2.75” to 1.75”? Definitely breaking the 1/3 rule there. My guess is you meant 2.25” which is where I’d like to land as well
Man, sorry you have a train RIGHT behind your home. Bummer.
What song are you playing backwards
ua-cam.com/video/dQw4w9WgXcQ/v-deo.html
Is the Greenworks machine "self-propelled"?
It’s not. But it doesn’t take much effort to move it. The tines spinning underneath help it along.
@@JimmyLewisMows Thank you!
You bet
There's a cop over there. He's looking at me it kinda appears
Music makes my sinuses hurt
Can you please share the Make/type of fence you have on your yard
Sure. It’s a vinyl fence. Ordered and installed from a local company.
@@JimmyLewisMows Thanks
is this safe over sprinkler heads?
Yes
1st GREAT MUSIC, 2nd I’ve been trying to get the Sun Joe cos reviews seem to say they are better but the sun joe is in short supply across the country.
So how your Green Works doing so far, thx, 👍🏾👊🏾✌🏾🇳🇬🇺🇸
Thank you. Have a video coming out next week to answer your question 😉
I did manually, and I could barely type this comment 😣
Oof. Yeah I’ll probably never use a manual thatch rake again.
Same! Its awful.
The “Rake of Death”, no thanks.
RCMike65 literally lol’d ^
Does it cost you too much on electric bills ?
No not at all. I only use this machine maybe once a year, too. So no big deal
its early spring how well does the greenworks work?
Works great! Highly recommend. There is a link to the product in the description if you want to check it out. The nice thing is the price isn't unreasonable and it gets the job done.
@@JimmyLewisMows after dethatching do you just let the lawn grow after racking up? Or do you overseed. I'm NC and its starting to get hot here. Your yards beautiful btw.
Thank you. I just let it grow. If your lawn is super thin you might consider an overseed.
@@JimmyLewisMows Problem with my lawn is I have a crap ton of weeds which I just treated so I'm trying everything lol
Little bit at a time. Just be patient. Once the weeds are gone, in your case it might not hurt to overseed. Just make sure to follow instructions on the label of the herbicide you used. Maybe plan an overseed for fall?
@Jimmy where are you located.
Utah
@@JimmyLewisMows wow lovely weather.
2nd.
Ha i thought that was Utah
Nice Music!
You know grass clippings aren’t recycling right. Read the top of your lid. Grass looks great by the way
I can read. That bin is for the local green waste service.
@@JimmyLewisMows just saying I work for waste management as a recycle driver and that’s not recycle. Dick more for the ppl that has to touch and sort through your smelly ass grass clippings
Interesting way around song copyright lol
First Aussie 😁
First...
The reversed song is kind of creepy my guy
Jesus is that a train in your backyars
That’s a train in my neighbor’s backyard, and don’t call me Jesus.
The machine works great, but if you have a decent size yard forget about it. It's going to take forever and the cord is unbelievable annoying.
Agreed. I touch on that in my next video (out Friday)
@@JimmyLewisMows I look forward to that. I just did my lawn this weekend. Not a huge yard but over 17,000 square feet. I decided to rake up the thatch because my bag mower seemed to be blowing it all over. Took about 16 hrs I would say. I would definitely recommend ppl look at the sun whatever brand that is with the thatch catcher at least. I mean for a $130 bucks can't really complain but vs the time & effort it took to do it...I dunno. Can't wait to see the results though eventually!
MIL TICKET Yeah that’s a lot of area to cover. I do mention the bag that comes with the SunJoe in the video that’s coming (spoiler - not a fan). Pretty comprehensive video I think. Looking forward to sharing it.
@@JimmyLewisMows Ha nice dude! Wasn't sure if that one is any good. I take pride in my lawn so I'm glad I did it & it's so much damn fun seeing that trail of thatch🙂.
Nice video....terrible music.
Good job using synthetic fertilizer on your lawn! FYI you're part of the problem!!
Sorry dude, you had a perfectly great lawn and made it look worse! Not to mention all the hard work and wasted time! If you really think you had a problem, you could have used GC Dethatch liquid with your sprayer. What you did was similar to overworking in the gym and not being able to do your routine in two days. Settle the hell down and have a good shrink on speed dial whenever this mental illness is coming on! Dethatchers are fine in the fall, when you are getting ready to overseed. Probably fine if you have bermuda.
You just proved how totally clueless you are about lawn care. The lawn recovers within 3 weeks and looks amazing. There's no way that a liquid can do the job that this does.
@@joemarchand8313 I use liquids with tttf. Great results and I also use Hyr Brix granular in the spring. Add a little compost every spring. I think its the best grass I’ve ever seen. I also love some iron every 6-7 weeks during growing season.
This dude is straight up removing the nutrients from his yard (in the form of grass clippings) and throwing it in his trashcan. I would almost garuntee he will purchase nutrients from another spot on earth and redisperse them around his yard (in the form of fertilizer). This is a perfect example of things humans do these days that are completely useless and unnecessarily drain our resources and energy without any meaningful result. Hot damn what has the world come to.
Winston Poplin you may have missed the point in Jimmy doing this process. He’s removing a layer that probably won’t break down , causing his existing fertilizers to be less effective because they can’t reach the soil. A few bags of grass must perish for the greater good.
@@sonycrack1 i was speaking of the fact that he was bagging his grass in general. But i do see your point.
If you watch any of my other videos, you'll see that I mulch when I mow 99% of the time. The only reason I was bagging in this case was to remove the dead material that was surfaced by the detacher.
@@JimmyLewisMows in that case i fully retract my comment and apologise for my ignorance. Get lit stay lit eh.
Winston Poplin 👍🏻👍🏻 “ the more you mow “ 🤘🏻🤘🏻
There's a cop over there. He's looking at me it kinda appears
