I've learned that in Northern climates (I'm in Idaho), this dead grass buildup is a huge problem in most lawns. Not only is there more Winter die off, but night temperatures here often dip below 55F, where the Microbes that usually break down this material slip into dormancy. That makes bagging preferable to mulching until well into Summer. The Sun Joe has been my secret weapon.
just dethatched and scarified mine in 2 directions yesterday using the sunjoe corded tool. i filled up 4 bags worth of dead material on a 1000sqft lawn.
I remember when I got mine they were tough to find for a reasonable price. They are good rakes but not $100 rakes. I finally found them in stock on Amazon and jumped on it for around $40 if I remember correctly.
renting a gas powered one time is barely cheaper than buying a corded Dethatcher. Got the Sunjoe this year and bought 100 foot cord. I've used it 3 seperate times and couldnt be happier. Also much easier than dealing with transporting gas powered rentals.
Sun Joe dethatcher works better than the greenworks version. I tried both and sent the greenworks back. They'll both do the job easier than the rake though haha.
I have the same Greenworks de-thatcher and it works great. I use it every year in late August as I clean up the lawn just prior to fall aeration and overseeding. It can be very aggressive so I only use it on thicker areas of the lawn and manually rake out the thatch and debris in areas where the turf is thinner and more susceptible to damage from the machine.
@@mattb9664 ahh haha I figured that’s what you meant 😆 yea it def crossed my mind but I understand it’s a process. The lawn was def ruffed up but it’ll recover and come back stronger. The dethatcher worked just like in the video.
The tow behind models for riding lawn mowers are great for big yards. I moved two years ago to a house with roughly 20,000 square feet of grass. I bought a used riding lawn mower and later a few tow behind attachments including an aerator and dethatcher with a few bags of sand as weights. With only a year of aerating and dethatching (fall and spring), I’m getting great results.
I may have manually dethatched 2500 square foot of my yard... I'm learning things the Ryan Knorr way. Sweat and tears. Also my whole town probably thinks I'm crazy for raking my yard at 10pm.
Thanks for the video, really informative. The other video you did on soil softener was good as well. I followed the instructions on the bottle and it made a world of difference. I was able to aerate the front and back yard with a hand tool in about 90 minutes, 30 minutes of that was taking a soda break and talking to my wife, so really about an hour. All I did after that was fertilize and the front and back yards are filling in the thin areas on their own and forcing out the few weeds I had. One more thing, the Groundskeeper II is a great alternative to a thatching rake, plus it won't kill your back. Same time frame, front and back yard in about 90 minutes including soda break. Thanks again.
I purchased a earthwise dethatcher it has a 16in path and worked really really well. I couldnt find a greenworks or sun joe. I wanted that sun joe but I think the earthwise worked just as good as either one of those would have
It’s kinda nice to see how this guy loves his job. And probably thanks to UA-cam he can get a much better pay for it too. It’s a win win situation from where I see it. Without mentioning how much some of us are learning as well.
I relate to the "work out" for the detaching or removing dead grass... I made a raking machine and call it a "Hard Raker"... It is nothing fancy, but it worked very well. I made couple of videos for it on my channel. My channel is all about the projects I'm working on and most of them are lawn care related. It is nice to put the videos out for friends and family at once as opposed to explaining each project many times :)...
Hey Ryan. For years my lawn was so thin. But it's 4 acres of grass, and it never gets irrigation...only rain water. Looking over the top of it, you can definitely see bald spot. Thisyear (2021) is wayyy different. Here in Michigan we've experienced soooooo much rain, that my lawn is thick now. For the last two years I've hit it with 100% nitrogen to green it up, but this year, same nitrogen, and sooo much rain it's like I reseeded it. It's TTTF. Also, this year I'm cutting at 3" or more height now. so the blades are greener. The lawn looks great. Next year it probably will get back to normal. I think most lawns just need a good amount of rain to turn it around, and cutting taller. This fall I will reseed with a slitseeder, more TTTF.
I just mentioned you to a guy at work who just purchased a home. He told me his new neighbors were lawn guys and he needed to start learning some tricks.
Hey ryan, wanted to get your opinion. When is it to the point when your lawn is so full of weeds and its so bumpy and you have so many high and low spots due to trees and other things that have been in the back yard that you just kill it, level it with a big machine and just start over.
Great video. I think you saved me a bundle. It’s only July 18 so I guess I’ll ride this out until mid-sept and then go through the process. Thanks again!
Ryan, really appreciate all your handy tips. Gotta tell you, you have to get a Groundskeeper II thatch rake for small areas. It uses tines like the electric dethatcher. Soooo much easier to use then those old fashion thatching rakes and does a much better job too! For larger areas I have the electric SunJoe dethatcher but again, get your hands on that Groundskeeper II dethatching rake, you'll toss your older one out so fast after using the new one. Great video's, Stay well. Anthony
I power raked with a rent gas powered machine 1 week ago. followed up with overseeding. Should I use this electric detatching rake in the spring before my fist mow after the grass has begun growing?
@@ZekeMagnum I definitely would NOT . If you thatch in the spring, you'll rip up that new grass you just planted in the fall. Just fertilize and reserve power thatching to the fall if needed again .

@@ZekeMagnum If you thinking about thatching even every 2 years, consider purchasing the inexpensive electric SunJoe Thatcher, For a little over $125 it's a worthwhile investment and pays for itself. Do you plan on over-seeding that area? If not what kind of fertilizer did you use.. did it have anything in it to combat any weeds that may be dormant?
Check out the Sun Joe brand because it has the scarfer attachment as well which is more aggressive for moss. I have a problem as well and the brand I own You can search for videos for that compare both brands.
Another thing to talk about WRT pulling the dead debris out is airflow. Great video Ryan! It is around 100 degrees in Utah right now. Would it be terrible if I de-thatched right now?
Not a great time unless you have warm season grass
even a regular rake gets a lot out, not sure if it stresses it out more though
Wait a minute. At the end of the video there's a shot where you're spreading fert with a mullet, and others where the mullet doesn't appear. Did you dethatch the mullet? Great Vidya.
I put down fert and Mil last week, can I dethatch this week or will that pull up all of the material I laid last week?
What's the dethatcher you are using?
Just realized that Ryan is cutting the grass different height in front and backyards?
