- Sunjoe Dethatcher and scarified | Do electric dethatchers really work? Do electric detacher’s really work? Could they be as powerful as gas dethatchers?
In this video I take the sunjoe dethather to my very thick lawn, did it work? The electric SunJoe has to have to have an extension cord to be able to run. It it is not battery or gas powered. it comes with two modes a detaching mode and a scarifying mode.
I will be answering these common questions:
How do you use a sunjoe detacher
How often should you Dethatch
How do you revive your lawn after you dethatch it
Is removing dead grass from the lawn good
Do you need to remove dead before over seeding
Should you dethach before overseeding
Should I cut my lawn before I dethach
Can you dethach a wet lawn
Do you need to dethatch a lawn

As of a month ago, they did. And in two months they will start rolling back in stock.

Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.
💯
It's a glorious piece of plastic. feels cheap and performs like a beast
I borrowed my neighbors sunjoe dethatcher and it was fantastic going to buy one asap

Bought one figure I’d give it a try you know your getting old when your exited about buying yard tools lol
It’s addicting, honestly. These things are like watching the lawns version of dr pimple popper, cause you never know what your going to pull up! 😂

Just bought the green works dethatcher....
Redid my yard today....
labor day weekend and I would usually be going somewhere. now I am playing with my new dethatcher toy and watching videos now to compare notes.
Wow, what an amazing machine! Thank you for the review of it! I’m going to have to pick one of these up! Love your channel!
They are worth it for sure! You should get one! Thank you for the support and love! Much appreciated!
I really have to try this sunjoe. I have never dethatched my lawn before. Great video! Looks like it worked really well.
You should! If your thatch and dead grass warrant it, you should use it! if your lucky enough to have solid organisms and temps that don’t give u issues, there is no need.
I love my Sun Joe! I've had it for 4 years and use it at both our pretty large properties. It's like a toy but it's a total workhorse. Lawns look fabulous after dethatching, seeding and then aerating and overseeding in the fall. Very easy!
So true.
Thanks for posting this. I am starting to get into taking care of my lawn now and this little machine looks like exactly what I need.
It will def help!
I can't tell if I'm more impressed by the Sun Joe or the incredible Mountain View in the back. Great video. Subscribing now!
I would say they are equally impressive! Lol thanks for the sub! I love the interaction and feedback, so feel free!!
I was super excited to have received my Sun Joe Dethatcher today via Amazon. I felt like a happy child on Christmas day. I look forward to test it out.
They are a blast. When I talk to folks I compare it to watching dr pimple popper, as the thatch just keeps coming and coming out, of what seems like, nowhere. Love to hear your thoughts when you use it!
I bought one last fall. Absolutely worth every penny. Awesome little machine. Yard is looking good Jeremy 👊
+Pacific Northwest Lawns thank you sir! You aren’t lieing, it’s super solid! How many times you used it?

@@TheGreenerLawn no love for the transition zones? When do we dethatch
@@roba168 hey Rob, so the dethatching is not done on zones, it’s done by grass type, cool season or warm season grass. So if you have rye, Kentucky blue, fescue, you have a cool season lawn and you Dethatch in spring. If you have Bermuda, st Augustine, centipede, zoysia, or Bahia are warm season lawns and should be Dethatcher late spring early summer as it begins to actively grow.
There are varying thoughts on dethatch some of these grass types, feel free to ask about your specific one.
JeremyofTheGreenerLawn@gmail.com
I agree, great tool. I used the scarifier on my bermuda lawn this summer. It worked great.
Saweet! Did it have any problems going through that Bermuda of yours? Your lawn is pretty thick!
@@TheGreenerLawn no early spring so the bermuda isn't super thick yet.
ahh, got ya! understood.
Great review! Your grass looks so good. The view in your neighborhood is beautiful! 🏔🏔
Thanks William, this really helped it to breathe! It is a spectacular view over towards the mountains! 💯 thank you
This is an awesome product. I am wore out raking up and carrying away my thatch. Cant recommend it strong enough. Thanks for the vid.
Lots of work, but as you know, your lawn will love it! thanks sir for the feedback!
The Sunjoe dethatcher is now on my wish list. It definitely would beat hand racking the lawn which is my current method to dethatch the lawn. It such a chore. 😂🤣🤦♀️. Thank you for sharing your video and info!🤗
OJ Hoang that raking is a pain, a chore, a no go! When you pull the trigger you will be addicted to the machine for sure! lol glad I could help get ya info!
I've strongly considered manual (hand) dethatching the outlier areas of the lawn before and after using the machine dethatching.
Awesome Video per usual ;) I need to do that!!! Unreal how much thatch comes up, Now your lawn can Breathe, Happy Grass

+niceAZlawn ohh how true! Thank you sir!
Just got mine today, took it out of the box, did the minor assembly and got my yard done all within 30 min. Picked out way more thatch than I thought I had.
CRAZY RIGHT?!? Friggin’ like dr pimple popper with how much there is in there when you think it’s a tiny amount!
This saved me hours of raking. The cord gets in the way. But a must have for the lawn.
It’s a real help for sure!
Just bought one and today is the day I use it can’t wait.
Ohhh ohhhh ohh let me know how it goes! 👀
First pass is done and pulled out 3 - 55 gallon bags of dead grass on the 10 setting. My house was built in 93’ so I doubt this has ever been done.
What I will say is this more than paid for itself for the $116.00 I invested. Going to germinate my grass seed then scarify and lay it down next week.
Will be great when we start seeing some battery powered options surface as well.
zeroibis 💯
Great video, thank you for helping to understand this!
200% glad to help!
I could not believe the dead grass that came out of my St. Augustine. Since I had an area to dump it, after dethatching a front yard 100 x 40, I had 5 large piles of dead grass at least 6' wide and almost 4' high. Well worth the money.
😳RIGHT?!? That’s Nutz! Good stuff tho! How did it perform when it could breathe?
Just bought one. Can’t wait

Just bought my sunjoe, I'm about to try it today..
Let’s goooo! Let me know how you like it, also, since it’s hot outside, use extra water to help it
I just finished using this thing twice on my lawn. Amazing how much this pulls up. I quickly figured out that holding the back flap open maybe a third of the way with some bungee cords made the clumping problems vanish. Makes is much easier to push along.
Jamie, thanks for the comment. It really is a beast isn’t it. Crazy how a cheap flimsy piece of plastic can do soo much!
Don’t take this as a slam (as it’s not), I just don’t see it as an issue at all. This whole video was shot on -10 setting (max lowest), 2 settings below the recommended 0 setting, and it was my wife pushing the machine. As you can see, outside recommended settings and a lady using it, super thick lawn. it didn’t have any issues. I think people really over think this aspect and make it a bigger issue then it really is.
As the tines grab and pull, this machine actually semi pulls it’s self along(but this could be because I’m have it slammed soooo low out side of recommended settings lol).
But with that said, your on to something there, just be cautious of debris, it can get ahold of it and shoot it at your legs if it’s open like that. I know people who have sent rocks through then bag. 😳
@@TheGreenerLawn Good point about not opening up the flap too much. Debris can definitely fly out the back of that sucker. And fast! Good idea to do this with long pants on perhaps.
I also had it on the lowest setting. This may have been a mistake for the first time use since my lawn had never been dethatched before. So I may have been pulling up too much material in one pass. I think that made the machine a bit harder to push with the flap down and trapping so much material inside the unit. After the first cleanup, I did a second pass. With that pass, I raised the unit one notch and held the flap open a bit with the bungee cords. The discharge was much more even than the first pass. Not nearly as many clumps since the material wasn't getting trapped inside the machine then dumped out all at once.
One thing to consider with running the unit with the flap partially open is that the motor will probably be working with less stress. With less material inside the unit flying around the tines, the motor can work easier. I can see this extending the life of the product as well as keeping the unit and your extension cord running cooler.
@@JamieWardHD 💯 spot on! I see the motor
Heat being a prob for sure and in that case; releasing effort /debris is a spot on move! 💯🔥

I've had the SunJoe a few years now. I would suggest finding a way to slightly open the back cover so that the unit is not dragging the thatch. I use a bungee cord, but plan to put in something more permanent, such as a 1/4” all- thread.
smart!!

Thank you, Utah has a beautiful back drop 100%. Where are you from?
I love mine! Only issue I had is that after three lawns last season the gear wore down. So, I have to find the part in the machine and SunJoe will replace it.
Dadding All Day ohh wow, but it sounds like they will handle it? That’s admirable! Really seems like a solid machine for sure! I had worried that it would be flimsy, and not be able to do a thicker, long lawn. It proved me wrong! Thanks for the comment!
The Greener Lawn Oh yeah. Great company! The warranty on that thing is fantastic!
I got the greenworks one and it’s awesome.
Solid stuff! I’ve never used that one, but I hear good things.
Shame I can't get my hands on one of these in Australia 😞. You guys have access to so much more than us Aussie lawn lovers.
Our Aussie fam needs love too! Makes me sad you guys don’t get some fun toys... but then again you guys have kangaroos.... and we don’t 😂

Thank you Qichen, I appreciate the feedback.
Cold me insane but I was not only impressed with Sun Joe but that clove hitch knot you used to hook up your extension cord :-)
lol.... I’m impressed that I pulled off a knot 🪢 that had a name! You have made my day lol! Thanks! Ohh I mean, I know what I was doing knot wise the whole time ..... 😝
I get better results with mine after I cutted1 1/2" off the front lip so that it does not dig in the ground all the time, block the rear door partially open( to let the dead grass out easier) and use not the racking tool but the scarificator.
The scarificator blades add the advantage of creating "groves" in the soil for the fertilizer or seeds to lodge in.
I use mine once in the spring ( I just did it yesterday) and once in the fall.
Do it twice at 90 degrees from each other.
I use my lawn mover to pick up the dead grass.
Solid use of the Scarifier, not its “intended”, but adaptations of tools is key!
I’ve seen and been recommended the open the back hatch up a lot, but I didn’t see any issue with it. Do I agree it would help? Yea, but I’ve never experienced an issue with it yet.
I've used mine several times and its already paid for itself.
They really do, if you figure a good dethatching costs around $10-20 a 1000 sqft... it adds up quick 💰💵💰
SUN JOE! GREAT Machine for the money!!
+James Phillips III 💯 % thing does work, that’s for sure!!
BTW Love your conifers!!!
Thank you! I really appreciate it!
Professional here, use some wire or rope to lift the lid in the back a little so the grass don't stuck. Smoothes the process, but don't lift it too high becouse of stones and other things that can be shooted from blades.
So you have a great idea (and people should prob do it 💯 ), but to be honest, it never really clogged up, it kicked it out really easily, crazy enough. I’m supprised thinking about it after the fact.
The grass seemed to clog so I used a couple of spring clamps to hold the catcher "door" open a couple of inches to allow the dead grass to come out clog free.
Never experienced it on the 801e, but I use a paint stick on the 805e so I 💚 your engineering
Have one works great.

makes it a great place to live, very scenic!
I can attest dethatcting once a year can not be the way. The English, dethatch many of times a year. I believe both spring and fall. For us northern cool season folk is almost a must
All lawns are different. It depends on Care, watering, feeding, environmental, etc. Some, you are very correct, they will need a dethatch bump often, and some others never need it.
My lawn struggled from last year having the wettest spring on record for Utah. It drew all my roots up, causing a lot of drying out issues, causing more dead grass then normal for my lawn. So, that is 1/2 the reason I Dethatcher. The other reason was for a lawn leveling I really need, I didn’t want thatch under a bunch of sand.
Man's favorite machine.... this is better than lawn mower.
SOOOOOO enjoyable, its addicting like watching one of those pimple popper shows.... lol
Nuff said. Gonna order one
Boom! 🔥
?? How soon after dethatching should I set new seed in to the lawn? New to lawn care. Thanks Matt for suggesting the "The Greener Lawn". great video by the way!..
Right away, as you opened up the soil, and your seed needs seed to soil contact. With that said best time to seed is fall beginning in September. Second best is spring time.
You can during the summer, just takes more water and time.
Late to the party. But, I watched the video and was a good one bro!😎👊🍺🍺🍺
Thank you brother! You are never late, just fashionably early for the next one! 😁

Excellent video and beautiful lawn! I was just wondering though. I just purchased this Sun Joe and the instruction recommends not raking at -5 or-10, but I see you used -10. I apologize if this came up in the comments as I didn't read them all.

@@TheGreenerLawn just hope im early enough in the season. Cool season zone 5b. We've had a rough spring so far. Not alot of sunny days a bunch of rain and cooler than usual temps. So i think lll be fine
+Andrew Lee sounds like it I like to use dethatchers below 75, during periods it
Will Not get Above 80 For like 1.5-2 weeks of recovery. You should be fine if you meet those requirements. The removal of thatch in that situation will help with possible fungal issues.
Where you order yours from?
I just bought the green works one hope it works it will be here soon!!
Vinny Pinatelli I’ve heard decent things about it! 👌🏻
I’ve had mine for a couple of years and am very satisfied. If you go slow it gets up more thatch. Next year I’m going to once a month during the season.
I didn’t this year and it was more work. Hint: if you let the loosened thatch dry a little you can blow it with a leaf blower and reduce the raking.
johnnybeanz1 heck ya, thanks johnny for the tips!! Much appreciated!!
Thanks really appreciate it I was getting discouraged Cuz I hear bad things about it all the time

3- reel?
Nope. No reel. Just a vintage mtd Briggs
+Matthew Schorfheide ohh sweet? I
Take it since it’s vintage, that’s the reason it doesn’t have a mulch plug.
Newbie seeking advice from anyone!! Thx for the video. Your yard is nice to start with. I have a bumpy yard with creeping charlie and bellflower starting to take over in some spots. My plan was to use this, then seed and fertilize with Milogranite. Now I'm wondering if I scrape it through the weeds, will I spread it to the rest of the yard. Thank you.
I’d the weeds are not actively seeding, then no, you could alway use a herbicide first on your lawn let the weeds die back then start your process (draw back here is they herbicides will give you a time frame till you can seed, there is one tho that works!)
But using the Dethatcher and then the Scarifier for the seed to have good seed to soil contact. You will be in the right direction.
Feel free to email me at JeremyofTheGreenerLawn@gmail.com for help.

Lol yea, 6k sqft is about max… maybe 10
great video and information. How do you protect the sprinkler heads when using the Sun Joe dethatcher. Obviously go around them but anything else we need to do?
I flag them, but to be 💯 honest I don’t think it could do much damage, machine is light, and I feel it would just bounce off it (lift up not cause issues).
Cord management was tedious. This was the first use of my de-thatcher. Any suggestion for cord management to keep from tripping/tangling the cord?
First pass is the closest then work your way away from it that way each pass is going away from ur. If you notice it was closest to my flower bed first, that’s the closest to the outlet. Then I worked my way away towards my sidewalk. Way easier... first pass or two could be tricky then the cord will stay out of your way.
I would really like to get one of these. The price is right, for sure. However, I would need at least a 100' extension chord to do my, not that large, lawn. As a 50' cord that is needed would run over $80.00, I can't see spending that much more for a cord than I would for the dethatcher. The cord price is from Walmart.
lol I’m using 100 ft on from Home Depot; , that isn’t horrible.
