    Greenworks Dethatcher

    Which dethatcher is better? Greenworks?? SunJoe?? This video is a rematch that has been requested between the two. But I decided to throw a third contender in the mix to see if there would be a "Cinderalla" upset. In this video I use all three on my lawn side by side and compare the performance outcome of each. I also have other people (other than myself) to weigh in on how easy it was to use the product and how well it performed. I also go to three additional homesites to try the 3 products on their lawns. My lawn had been recently dethatched in the spring as had my neighbors. But the final two lawns have NEVER been dethatched one for over 20 years. So it will be interesting to see how they perform.
    None of the products used in this video are sponsored in ANYWAY. I purchased each unit, and borrowed one, and used strictly for a straightforward comparison. I created an even playing field in regards to each machine using the tines only cylinders that come with each machine. (The Sun Joe is the ONLY machine that has an additional scarifier cylinder option,) I also made certain that each machine had equal space in which to work. Since NONE of these machines are sponsored I used the machines as ANY homeowner might, I did set each at their LOWEST settings that the manufacturers created them to go, to make the comparison as equal AS POSSIBLE. I am VERY AWARE that the SUN JOE states that the tines cylinder should not be used at the lowest setting. But I believe that if a machine can go lower than it's competition, so much the better. I do warn you that when you go "outside" the Manufacturers recommendations, that you do (like myself) risk causing harm to the machine or yourself. (NOTE: I have used these machines at all the lowest settings and have experienced NO adverse damage to the machines.) I do suggest mowing your grass to the lowest height that you feel comfortable with. Longer grass can tend to bog down the machines. I would suggest no taller than 2 inches in Height of Cut (HOC). Always read your instructions and follow them. I am a rebel and would hold NO COMPANY liable if I CHOSE to "DO IT MY WAY".
    I and the others in the video have been in need of cleaning up debris in our lawns, much like the average homeowners and wanted to see which could produce the best results. I wish you the best of luck in your experience with ANY of these machines. ALL of them work and do the job at certain degree of performance. Your choice should be based on which you feel will work best for you.

      Thanks. I know that the video was pretty lengthy but it did have 3 different products being reviewed, and included 4 different lawns and 6 people's thoughts (as you referred to). I think it is important to hear not just my opinion but if I can, get others involved in the process!

      Thank you, I greatly appreciate the feedback. I had a great time putting it together and I hope that it helps people in their decision making . I think you will truly be impressed by what the Sun Joe can do. It definitely does a great job and with having the option of the scarifier unit, if you have a ton of debris, it will really clean all of that, so that your lawn can get all the water and nutrients that it needs without the debris choking it out. Thank you for the comments, I hope to hear from you in the future.

    I just came across this video and I'm glad I did. Congrats on doing a thorough job in testing and comparing. One criticism I would offer is confirming to the viewer that the depth settings had not changed from location to location but all in all a great video. I am surprised this doesn't have more likes you deserve it. I have a lot of work to do to my lawn and cleaning up areas that have been killed off due to dead grass build up. Thank you for giving me more info to better inform my purchase and potentially avoid frustration with this phase of my restoration.

      Thank you very much I greatly appreciate the compliment!! And in regards to the "criticism" I can take that type of thoughtful and very well intentioned correction, ALL DAY LONG!! I did set all the machines to the lowest setting in the video, but I did fail to mention that during the test runs!! I will definitely do so in the future. Restoring a lawn can be a long and frustrating experience! But it sounds like you have the fortitude to stick with it!! Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

      @@TheHighlanderLawn Hey, I also want to thank you for this comparison video. I just bought the SunJoe and wanted to ask you a question. I have never dethatched my 2-year-old lawn, and I have had problems with thinning lawn and poor lawn growth. My question is, what is the rule of thumb to set the height of the dethatcher? Would it cause damage to the lawn if I set the height too low?

    • @TheHighlanderLawn
      @TheHighlanderLawn  2 роки тому

      Jill, I am in need of begging you to forgive me for not responding until now. I am usually pretty prompt on the responses to comments. But for some reason I missed yours and I am very sorry for my failure to do so. Congrats on getting a dethatching unit. In regards to height of the unit, SunJoe states that the "dethatcher cylinder" should not be used at the -10MM setting. but I have used it every time on this setting at my own risk of course. I think that they key to being able to use it at the lowest setting is that a person should cut their lawn to the lowest point that they are comfortable with. This will keep the unit from bogging down from long healthy grass, and having it wrapping around the cylinder and thereby causing problems with the unit. If you have some thick debris in the lawn I would even suggest applying the scarifier to extra thick turf. I hope this helps and again I am truly sorry for the delay in my response. Thank you.

    Fiskars StaySharp Max Reel Mower ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend This is what all push mowers should strive for. It was easy to push. It cut the lawn. The blades are sharp, very sharp. The one minus that everyone should be aware of is you need to be very careful taking the cutting unit out of the box. There’s a plastic guard so you don’t cut fingers as you take the main unit out of the box but it’s not taped down. As I took the unit out, I ended cutting a piece of my shirt. The plastic guard moved and my shirt touched one of the blades.

    Great video! Bottom line all three will give you a better looking lawn than before. I have the GW for two years, an my lawn never looked better. I am sure the other two would do the same. Big edge with the Sunjoe is that Scarifer attachment for seeding.

I am glad to hear that you have found great success with the Greenworks. I love getting feedback from those who have actually used the product. Yes it is a fact that the Sun Joe does edge out with the additional option of the scarifier. Sun Joe just came out with an updated model for this year of the dethatcher/Scarifier. Thank you. The Sun Joe wins out in my opinion, when you have the additional scarifier option. If I had used that in the mix, it would have completely blown the others away. Now that I have reviewed the GW twice and it has failed each time versus other machines. The Greenworks will most likely not be part of any future reviews. But there are a few other machines out there that I would love to see their performance versus the Sun Joe!! Thanks for the comment Andy.

    Thanks for the video. My lawn is a disaster and I found these tools. I was torn between the Worx because I use their other tools and love them, and the Sun Joe. I'm thinking a dethatching lap, then scarifying lap, then seed and water. Maybe my seed will take better this year

    • @TheHighlanderLawn
      @TheHighlanderLawn  2 роки тому +2

      Jason. you are most welcome! Both are great tools and should serve you well. I too have done the same dethatching then scarifying laps. It will beat your turf up pretty good, but with some good watering and some good fert, your grass is very resilient and will rebound quickly, even more so with a good overseeding, I would suggest throwing down some top dressing (either soil or peat moss, etc.) and your seed to soil contact will be better, and it will help keep the birds from "snacking" on the seed that you put down (I speak from providing them plenty to feed off of LOL!!) Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

    I've just been letting my mower mulch and return the grass, but maybe that is the worse thing I could do, adding more dead grass to what needs to be removed by dethatching. We have about as much weeds as we do grass, and we are renting, so not much going into the yard. But this was a great lesson and something to seriously think about.

    • @TheHighlanderLawn
      @TheHighlanderLawn  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you, I hope that you enjoyed it. In regards to mulching. I am a proponent of it because it returns some nutrients to the soil as it breaks down. Now I live in a higher altitude area (about 4300 ft above sea level.) Now because of that the grass clippings do not breakdown as quickly as they would in lower elevations. So I usually only mulch in the hotter times of the year 85+ degrees. Due to the heat being able to easily accelerate the decomposition of the grass in such high altitude. If you are in a lower elevation it should allow for the grass to decompose fairly rapidly. But if the blades of grass are super long when it is cut (like cutting hay in a field LOL) then you would find that longer blades take longer to decompose. I have a great mulching mower and it does very well at chewing up the blades, but when the temps are dropping below 80 degrees is definitely when I stop mulching and bag it up. Because yes if they do not decompose it can potentially add a layer of dead debris that can choke out your lawn. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

Use that Worx until it gives up the ghost, or "donate" it and get the SJ!! LOL Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

    I have the WORX myself and found it very easy to use AND effective. A neighbour across the street has the SunJoe and we tried a fun switch last Spring. The bottom line... we both felt the machines performed equally, but that WORX was easier to use. I think it's the open front of the WORX unit that lets it move more freely.... it doesn't jam with thatch and just rides over it. The only thing to remember, as you point out, is the SunJoe doubles as a Scarifier.

    • @TheHighlanderLawn
      @TheHighlanderLawn  3 роки тому +1

      Adrian, the WORX was definitely a very effective machine. In fact after the review was posted, I was speaking with the gentleman that stated that the WORX was his machine of choice. The subject of the open front came up and we did come to the conclusion, much like yourself, that the open front may allow the machine to not "bind" up if there was a significant amount of debris, A closed front like the other machines may, if the debris level is high, allow it to build up and bog down the machine and cause damage to it. Which with as light and kind of FIsher Price toy like these machines can feel like, I wouldn't be surprised that they could do so and overheat the electric engine rapidly. So I think that WORX may be on to something there, although it still freaks me out that the tines are exposed while it's operating. I guess it's the "dad" in me that thinks "oh no, what if my kids were out in the yard, and it got them" or "dang, did I just catch the neighbor's dog in the tines!!!" I know super gruesome, and way OVERTHINKING it but weird accidents happen all the time. LOL.
      The factor that obviously tips the scale in such a close race, is of course the additional option of the scarifier, which if a person is doing an overseeding project, is an absolute bonus to the SJ.
      Thank you for your comments and insight. I hope to hear from you in the future.

    Hi. Watched your first video and got your reply. After that video I got my new Sun Joe, and I want to say that I love it. Easy to put together, easy to adjust height, easy to start and easy to push. I’m 75 years old and love yard work and got mounds of thatch out of my yard. My 100 ft cord restricts me from going further into my back yard. My yard is 16 acres, not all grass but too far for any thatcher except power ones. I’m debating on getting an additional 100 ft cord with the same weight. I’m wondering if it will damage the motor with the extra length extension cord. Thanks again for your video.👍👍

I have not used anything past 125 ft of cord, 100 + 25 12 gauge cord. I had no issues doing so. But if you get to 200 feet well then it may cause an issue. But I have not used it at that length. I would imagine that you could give it a go and if it is performing differently.....stop usage prior to any harm to the motor. You are most welcome for the video. Great video! Just one correction. When you're adjusting the Greenworks height at the beginning of the video (about 2:50 mark) you have it backwards. The machine was already set on its lowest setting and you were raising it up. You can physically see it going up with each twist of the knob on the wheel if you look close. This confused me too when I first used it but the height is actually reflected by the setting on the bottom of the wheel that you can read upright, rather than the setting at the top of the wheel that is upside down. I learned this the hard way and want to spare you viewers from the same fate! Cheers

    I think you guys messed up the height on that Greenworks one? as you set it to "low", the wheels went down, NOT up. You even see the chassis go up. That's why it didn't do anything when you ran it on your lawn. I have this unit and it works very well (if you use it correctly).

    • @TheHighlanderLawn

      Bertminator, Thank you for your insight. I will refer you to page 15 of the Greenworks user manual. Here's the hyperlink if you no longer refer to the paper manual: www.manualslib.com/manual/763082/Greenworks-27022.html?page=15#manual. I am glad to hear that you have had great results with your Greenworks. That is great. I always do my research and I am a freak about making sure that all settings are where they should be to ensure an equal and fair comparison. Unfortunately the Greenworks did not perform in my lawn and others when each time it was checked and re-checked before each app and used correctly. For the Greeworks, the portion is always the number towards the grass. It's indicated on the handlebar. I'm sure you had it at the highest, which is Position 3, which is for Transport only. Position 2 or 1 would have been better.

    • @TheHighlanderLawn
      @TheHighlanderLawn  3 роки тому

      Charles, thank you for your comment. I think that you will enjoy the versatility of the SJ. In regards to the GW, according to the manual ( page 15 on the model with which I used and I made sure I was thorough in my research), it states that the Position 1 is for Transport and that Position II is at approx. 1/8" (3mm) and Position 3 is at approx. 3/8" (10mm).
      To make sure that the comparison was as equal in opportunity to all machines, I made sure that all were set to the similar setting of "height"/depth, and that they all had equal areas to work in. The outcome however was what was visible in the video, and the same settings were set at all locations that were used.

I did see that Amazon has them available, but not directly through there warehouse system, it appears that some independent merchants have them for sale through Amazon, but I will say they are asking some inflated pricing i.e. $225.(Supply & Demand) I will say that last years’ pricing got completely out of hand units were listing for $350 plus. Jim, thank you for the comment. I am sorry that I did not respond as promptly to your comment. My settings in UA-cam show new comments, but do not show additional comments added to the initial response. So I apologize for that. The settings are set exactly as the user manual shows, I check and re-check because I have in previous years made plenty of mistakes before. Yes several have stated that they have experienced great results, and they are very passionate in their defense of the GW unit. If they are having awesome results, then I couldn't be happier for them, and I would back their results. However I have tested the GW twice and the results in my lawn and the others involved were not what I was hoping for, and funny enough each of the folks using the unit asked is thing set right, so it added a 3rd check on the setting. Thank you for the comment. I am again sorry for the delay. I hope to hear from you in the future.

    Excellent video. I moved into my house five years ago and have yet to dethatch it. I have no idea if or when it was ever done before we moved in. I have been looking at dethatchers since last year and have watched a lot of online videos. I have an acre of property and wish they came in wider models as 13-14 inches wide is gonna amount to a lot of time. May look into a rental at our the local hardware store since their commercial models are wider, but if I decide to purchase I will likely go with the SunJoe.

    • @TheHighlanderLawn
      @TheHighlanderLawn  3 роки тому +2

      Bob, Thank you! I had a great time making it. My guess is that it may have never been done. A lot of people do not understand how and what grass needs to thrive and develop stronger and healthier roots. An acre of property is a lot to take care of and can it be done with an electric unit, yes....but it will take some time. Rentals can work really well especially if it's gas powered. If you do, I would recommend washing it down first so that you won't spread any weed seeds, or other lawn related disease that may still be "lurking" from the person's lawn who used the machine prior to you. The good news is that you won't have to worry about COVID-19 in your lawn....and won't have to mask up!! LOLOL!!
      Collecting all the dead debris can take as long if not longer. I have about 5000 sq ft to deal with. An acre is a little less than 9 times that area. So you get the "SUPERMAN CARD" on getting that all done. The Sun Joe will really bring up a bunch of dead debris. Especially if you use the scarifier attachment. I never used it in the video because the other 2 machines did not have the option, and for the sake of a level playing field and comparison, I did not use it. I do use it in my video where I help my neighbor who lives across the street in helping him "Fix my Ugly Lawn" Vid. It is crazy how much it brought up. The scarifier will also help if you are looking to do an early season overseeding.
      Good luck in your efforts this coming season and I would love to hear how it is going. Thank you for the comment, I hope to hear from you again.

Just to be VERY clear, ALL units were set to the lowest settings in the portion of the video discussing the height settings, and they stayed at those settings through the ENTIRE video. I can completely understand the thought that it wasn't set properly, I even triple checked it when it was not pulling up anywhere near the same amount of debris, thinking that I had done something incorrectly as well. Fernando, I must admit that I don't have any experience with warm season grasstypes. I mainly deal with cool season grasses like Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Rye, Tall Fescue, etc. When you ask about what to start with, I guess that I would need to know where you live at what your goals are for your lawn. (For example, are you looking to cut it short with a reel mower or something else?) I do know that warm season grass types do not do so well with a dethatching machine, due to their stolon root systems (the root system grows and spreads above ground, basically). But cool season types have rhizomes which work beneath the surface and do well with dethatching. I would be very interested to know what your plans are and I would love to help from there.

      @TheHighlanderLawn  3 роки тому

      Thank you. I had a great time making it. Sun Joe just came out with an updated model that should be arriving at my home soon and I will be doing a Old Lion vs Young Lion comparison. I didn't show them in the video, but the machines do come with very inconsequential bags, that to be honest, should just be burned the second you pull them out of the box!! They don't do any good in my opinion.
      But you will absolutely need to collect and remove the debris. This can be done a few different ways. Either use a leaf blower and get all the debris in one pile and then either dispose of it or turn it to mulch in a garden bed, etc. Probably the most effective way to collect the debris, is to use a rotary mower and bag the dead debris and then do with it as you see fit. I hope that all goes well in your efforts to make you lawn top notch this season.

What happened is that I had used some music that I was told that it could be used in the YT vids without the threat of having it copyrighted. This video has been up for sometime and the initial YT checks stated that everything was fine, no problems. Then about 2 months ago, I get a copyright strike and they give a solution to "replace" the song. But they fail to tell you that when you do, it lays over the top of EVERYTHING, voice tracks as well. Now it's like that and they will not let you revert it back.

      Paul, I truly believe that the WORX dethatcher can do I great job just like it's closest competitor in the video. I was not using the bag in the video, nor have i ever used the bag since my initial trial of the Sun Joe. Unless you are doing a very minimal (and I mean very minimal debris removal) then the bag is pretty much rendered useless because it cannot hold anything more than the amount of debris that is pulled after about 10 feet. So since then, I have never used it. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
