Omg it would be such a good idea for you to do a series where you redid each assignment that was in your portfolio and see how you would approach them now
“This is Karl, the designer who can’t get his life together” _Karl is a lanky ginger dude with glasses and a fringe. This is great inspiration for anyone looking to get into graphic design! You should do a video where you revisit some of the work from this portfolio and show how your style has progressed over the years.
I started teaching myself how to do graphic design when I was 15, I still do graphic design as one of my main sources of income and have kind of lost interest in designing for myself and as a hobby. After watching this video I feel inspired again, thanks, Kel! Love your channel.
Oh no! So sad you lost that spark but happy that this video inspired you! I hope that you can enjoy that passion again - some other design UA-camrs I watch for inspiration are Abi Design, Will Patterson, MADE Channel, The Futur, Flux, and more!
I took a 4 year art program and majored in illustration- I just landed my first entry level designer job (over a year after graduating) and i am PUMPED I feel like since I focussed mainly on illustration I still have a lot to learn about design and improving my work as a designer and I cant stop binging your videos while chillin and sketchbooking. You are great I love you
Portfolio videos like yours really save people who need portfolios, like me, but don't go to a portfolio school or have a portfolio class (that I know of) to take. so, THANK YOU
i’m an interior design student and honestly watching any of your videos helps my digital work improve now that I’ve seen your advice and knowledge !!! a legend
Seeing this is the first time I really feel like the schooling I had did anything with design? The name of the program I graduated was Illustration And Design, and a good chunk of our projects were designing posters, we did a vinyl album, a board game, a magazine cover and spread, I think a beer label? And other stuff. And all those things at the time I saw as “illustrations, with consideration of the location of text” but huh. I guess that really was graphic design. It’s really amazing what a shift in perspective can do for your understanding of past experiences, which is v bewildering. So here’s a very deeply confused, but just as appreciative, thank you. PS love the logo redesign vids.
I recently started a new job as a graphic designer at a print shop. I wanted to thank you, I found your channel through your soda logo redesign video. Watching your creative process has reignited my love and passion for graphic design! I’ve been really out of practice until I started this new job. Thanks for sharing you passion and creativity!
you should do a video series redesigning your work in the portfolio!! it would be so cool to see a then vs now comparison and see how your skill and style has changed over the years
I'm putting together my portfolio for my resume and its killing me. I judge my stuff so harshly and it's hard what to pic to put in it. I just hope my portfolio and resume is good enough to get me hired as a video editor at Tesla, wish me luck 🤞
'Im assuming your wanting to go into graphic design which is why your watching' Me who has no creative intentions whatsoever but is just here to look as aesthetically pleasing things: Yes
each one of these designs are so wildly different but they are all amazing. Have you ever talked about your portfolio you used to get into college? the process and tips to help people transferring from high school to college. Thanks Kel for all the awesome and helpful videos!
the 1975! that magazine spread is gorgeous, even if it is different from your current style, which i also adore. (and you had wonderful taste in music). also for borns, same.
Your portfolio are actually so good! I graduated Fine Arts major in Advertising earlier this year, and I hope to continue to improve with my designs. What I think with my designs are actually kinda basic and so-so. Everytime I look at my portolio, I always feel like I could do better.
Oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my ob my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my
I just finished self studying all the basics of design such as color, layout, and typography. I also have lots of knowledge of the software applications used to design, but I don’t really know what to do next. I didn’t go to an art school and no one is guiding me through stuff. Until I saw this video. Gives me a bunch of ideas so I can work my way out and start making my own portfolio. Thank you very muchhh ate Lauren!
this was helpful and calming to watch. Im graduating with an interior design degree in May and finishing up my portfolio and getting ready to start applying for jobs. its nice seeing someone else who knows what they are doing
I'm currently working on a portfolio and I'm so nervous about it. I'm creating pieces and gathering previous pieces and trying to see what is good and what isn't. This vid makes me a lil less nervous because when it comes down to it, we all grow and change as life goes on. I've got time and I will get better as I do more. Thank you for this video ✨
I found your channel yesterday and now I'm binge watching you. I am thinking about going into graphic design and this is so inspiring. Keep up the good work!
what you said about "if you feel nothing from the art, that's part of the art. if you feel infuriated by it, that's part of the art." is what i tell people all the time when they wanna bitch to me about modern art.
I am working towards becoming an architect and I am currently employed as a designer/intern at an architecture firm. Graphic design / architectural rendering is my favorite part of the job. I have considered doing some Graphic Design commissions for extra income. Love your videos so much! Your music taste and aesthetic is impeccable as well. Keep making these excellent videos and hello from Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Thank you so much for sharing this! I love the idea of creating concept work for a whole lineup (like your Passionpit merch & the Northern Market). It's fun seeing the branding shared on different pieces.
This made me go back and look at my first portfolio. Wow.. How did I think that was good stuff. But it's nice to know i've improved. I'd love to see you redo some of your old projects :)
The passion pit album art redesign is sooo cute. I love. I also really love the computer stickers you made for your Karl merchandising. When you go for job interviews now (like in theory), do you bring a physical portfolio or do you just have everything digitally?
this is so cool. you made and continue to make amazing art!!! I also love your thoughts on art. minimal and inexpressive pieces can still be powerful! why don't you have a bigger audience?! AMAZING
ahh.. spilling coffee in a food and drink free design lab.. I never did that, but got chastised by one of my teachers for a bottle of coke on my table. Not an open bottle mind you, but a rule is a rule mister! "And you with the packet of sunflower seeds! Take those outside!!!" Your portfolio brings me back to my portfolio! We had to design a poster for the local chrysanthemum clubs big "Mums 2000" flower show. How many ways can you style a mum for the millennium?? lol.. The head of the club decided my mum was too stylized and didn't look "inviting" enough. "That would not be an award winning species in my book.. we want to encourage only the best flowers!" I also did a brochure for the national parks. I chose the Grand Canyon as I had visited there as a teen. I could not decide pictures to use as they were all breathtaking and my brochure could not be fifty pages long. Plus we had to add in all the Nation Parks' sponsor logos and I could not place them without ruining the beauty of one of the shots, ya know? ugh.. I did learn the simple color matching trick. Why go through swatches of colors to find a complimentary one when you can just use the color picker eye drop tool in Photoshop and use a tone that is already in the picture? Instant match and tied the whole thing together. It's funny how design changes. All the little style rules I followed for myself get broken all the time these days, but yet it works!
I randomly found your channel and I’m so happy I did! Been lacking in creativity and ideas but your vids (and Pinterest boards) are giving me some much needed inspo ☺️
seeing all those black boards and thinking of all the glueing, money and crying I've poured into my projects so far, and how many more I still have to do for the next year and a half...
We had portfolio class in school, while it was very helpful it most of us ended up getting extremely pressured because we were asked to include a specific number of works (which most of us didn't have since we were dealing with our thesis at the time). In the end we had mediocre works since at that point we were just trying to pass the subject. Your portfolio looks really great and I wished I had taken my portfolio class on a separate semester (maybe on it's own) that I would've made better content. Props!
When I heard that you're 100k in debt it made me shiver :-/ Here in Finland University/college is free. Getting an education should be everyone's right, not a privilege, and it's a shame how many countries still struggle with this concept.
This was fun to see, I'm glad you made this video! Also I always love the little artsy clips you put in at the end like with the flowers and the clouds, I think it would be awesome if you made a whole video with that kind of material :)
I'd love to see a video about how to create your portfolio. My graphic design school doesn't teach us and we have to just kinda figure it out ourselves. I'd love to see what your school taught you and what do you still use to create your portfolio now.
This is cool! I surprisingly like the weird collages at the end the best thought though. Guess it’s just more my style. The passion pit project was neat too.
i'm currently in a media course in college (UK so it's before University) and i'm really thinking about what i want to focus on - your channel is genuinely clearing my mind because i think graphic design and merch design is so so interesting and would be an almost perfect mix for a creative outlet. i'm wondering on how to focus more on it, how to really practice and find things to create so i can gain more understanding on it. i have a class for graphic design which i am working on, but it doesn't feel like enough of a project for me to really get into it.
So, where do you live/studied design? Based of what you’ve shown, your old portfolio still holds up! Bonus point for pasting it in hard (?) cardboard to prevent the degradation of the papers. That suitcase looks cool too, my institute didn’t give anything like that. Anyway, since I was unable to get digital drawing materials during and after my career and my country’s graphic design job environment hasn’t given me many opportunities (dozens of interviews that went nowhere), I’ve not been able to update my digital institute portfolio that much (despite doing a decent job with its branding) and I lacked the funds to buy more design tools or to make a new, more professional physical portfolio. Also, I now remember that I once made a physical portfolio with cardboard boxes and some excellent papers halfway through the career, but in the making of it things turned out for the worse in many ways, some I couldn’t prevent.(aka, usb malfunctioning when going to print the materials) It didn’t help either that the portfolio class in the last semester was mostly about digital portfolios. At this point, if I do decide to stay in the art/graphic design world and get part/full time designer jobs, I’d restart my studies overseas, or just try out other art subjects like photo or sculpture. I really think that one’s design skills and knowledge can really depend on the place where they studied. And I’m starting to believe that learning design in a dedicated art/design school instead of a multi-career institute can give someone more knowledge of the subject and job opportunities. Cool video! Glad you’re uploading more often :3 Btw, one of my home’s 2 cats looks very similar to yours, only much younger and smaller (she’s like 1.5 years young, the other is a 7yo ginger male that loves to eat and ask for food XD )
you could make a video about how to actually put together a portfolio i know its for school to teach but im only in high school and i really like your style i'd love to listen to your advice❤️😄
i feel like this is what pam beesly would be like if she had stayed in art school lol

YOU'RE SO AMAZIIING FOR COMMENTING THIS, you'd still be awesome if you didn't. This is jskahwikak
