Dude the SKILLS of that first person! Man their ability to design appealing character designs is so incredible!
Why is nobody talking about how great the second artist is? The stile is just awesome, and i would love to know more about tbe characters!
I really like these videos. I'm not an illustrator, but I love art and drawing as a hobby and find these videos super interesting.
Same!
Same haha! I doodle just for fun but absolutely not as a career or anything that I'm super serious or ambitious about. But it's still super cool and interesting to see these videos
Mhm same!!
Lord I loved Eszter's (the first artist) work so much! I love how they vary so many aspects of their style based on the characters they're making. The line weight, color palettes, and the characters. I personally have a big problem with spanning away from human characters and would love to see some more of their things or a social media on their portfolio. Overall obsessed with their stuff
ikr
I luv the style ❤
Their short film 'Over the Washing Machine' is really good! I saw it twice at different animation festivals, the animation and also the music is still stuck in my head. I'm not sure it's uploaded to youtube or vimeo yet tho. But I don't know why, I really didn't expect to see them here :>
i love their work, it's made me really inspired to go design some funky little guys
(personal notes)
- make ideas all be related to eachother
- storytelling elements
- expressions, poses, outfits
- adaptable style
- name and email to every peice
- position(s) you're aiming for
- ref / turn around drawn out / turn around animation
- line-up of all characters
- dynamic poses
- sketches
- dont repeat expressions
Appreciate you for taking notes! I shall screenshot now! Thanks!!
Thank you sm for sharing! You’re videos are soo helpful especially for someone who is very interested in working in character design such as myself 👀 I never went to art school and the college I’m in doesn’t technically have animation courses. So, I was wondering in terms of applying and building a portfolio, do larger companies look for people with experience? Like should I have gone to art school? I want to say no but I’m starting to second guess myself…
agree with @poodled7794, it's not about what school you went to, it's about your portfolio! for entry level positions, experience isn't important, it's about the type of work in your portfolio. good luck!
thank you so much for the feedback @poodled7794 and @JackieDroujko!! It means a lot ❤️ I’ll definitely check out that video. I feel a lot better to keep working and improving on my art 💪
@@JackieDroujkozzzzzzzz😂😂😂ç I zz
Thank you so much for your gentle roast. As I mentiones already I think it's very helpful and so amazing with how little brushstrokes you can tell so much. Really appreciate it and as soon as I find the time I'll addapt some of these great advices. Already trying to implement better poses and storytelling in particular into current projects and I really think having seen your previous tips on how to build a portfolio has helped me a ton. So just wanted to send a humble but big THANK YOU your way :) Congratulation on the job.
Hey, just wanted to say that I really enjoyed watching your portfolio. A lot of great designs! Cheers
I absolutely loved your portfolio!
How is it going with your job?
! Your portfolio is looking really good! And I checked it out myself, if possible, pray tell what website or tools you used to create your portfolio website?
All these amazing artists please I am getting stressed.
I know I am still in college but like... Daaam you guys on a whole another level
I’m feeling the same way lol, but we all start somewhere right?☺️
I know you didn’t ask and i’m so sorry if this comes across as rude or something but as someone who dropped out of college and is now in cosmetology school and thinking of getting back into art as a casual hobby, and from someone who gets very envious of other people’s art. It’s your own race and it’s only you, do it at ur own pace, be sure to practice and don’t feel like ur not talented!! cannot stress that enough it eats at u very easily!!
(also ur art on ur page is AMAZING!)
@@fruit4evr you spoke some very wise facts tho!
Try not to get stressed! I’m like u honestly I’m 15 and I’m nervous if I’m even gonna get a character design job, BUT even with all these artists out there u have ur own unique style and it might be just what someone is looking for! Even if someone has way longer experience ur art has just as much chance as their style to get picked :)
CONGRATS ON THE NEW JOB!!! also these videos are super helpful!! It really helps me know what all is missing or what i can incorporate to my portfolio
something so important in dynamic posing is opposing line angles. if they’re in action, especially like the brandolf the hero character, put the shoulders to a massive slant and make the hip line go the opposite way. you can see this in the re-draw jackie did but stepping back and paying attention to those energy-centric lines can help you push easily (arms and legs, elbows and knees included! if one is up make the other down)
lowkey with these videos i was half expecting something mildly condescending like how criticism seems to be conveyed a lot on the internet but this was so sweet, positive and productive! and so real. thank you so much for sharing and good luck on your journey
Congratulations on your job at Disney!
Thank you for these videos, they are so helpful
omg congrats on the new job! I love your work and your portfolio critique vids, film making tiktoks, and just studying your work in general has helped me improve my art a lot. I'm so so happy for you, you deserve it!
I enjoyed your video.
If I could offer a bit of advance, if you want to impress the heck out of a long sword except, animate the swings that use both arms differently then the swings that use the top hand as a pivot point. It was when you mentioned the sword as heavy that made me think of this. A long sword in motion often looks weightless because one hand is near the center of mass at the top of the handle and the other is near the counter weight in the pommel.
It might not directly apply to character design but it does indirectly apply for deciding what kind of posses to put the character in. Of course fights don’t have to be historically accurate. I just wanted to offer it as a option that would be appreciated by a decent sized demographic of people that feel unrecognized.
I just want to clarify. I am not saying that it is wrong to do the “baseball bat” long sword thing. I just see a lot of people get criticized for trying to do it historically accurate. There is an amazing amount of grace to long sword combat that does not get represented in most animation.
random, the first portfolio the artstyle looks so like cruchy and taste i love it so much it looks like it would taste like whip cream and waffles i love it sm

This is a bit random but can you do a video on your UA-cam banner? Like the process of you designing it and all the details like the canvas sizes, etc.? I just think it is so beautiful and it would be so helpful for people trying to come up with a banner idea not only for UA-cam but also for other platforms like Twitter 🥺💕 please 🙏🏻
definately looooooooooooove so mush your portfolio review, hope to see more!!!! :)
This is wonderfully helpful x
Hi Jackie, I really want to tell you that your videos help a lot!!!
This video is so helpful to me!! Thank you❤ Now I can trying to make my portforio better😊
Congrats on 100k !!🎉🎉😄😄😄😄
Love these videos! I would like to see more :)
I'm just finding you. Haven't watched a minute of this but I'm appreciating you for this!
As someone who wishes to go into art/animation (specifically cartoons) This video was actually really fun to watch, and even though I don't have any strong pieces of artwork or anything at all to create a portfolio I'll certainly try to keep these ideas in mind if I somehow end up getting a job interview for disney or cartoon network haha-
your portfolio IS your job interview!! the first one, at least. it's the same for applying for art universities. they want to hear from you, but what they REALLY want is to see your art. your art speaks volumes. it's why artists in the animation and cartooning industry put so much stress on it, and why art schools have portfolio review days. if it's your goal to go into that field and you're getting towards a place in your life where you're wanting to apply, i recommend working on art from the perspective of intending to create a portfolio. make work that shows what you love and also highlights why you'd be the right person for the job :)
(best of luck as well, as someone who wants to do the same! it's lots of work but i wish someone had told me BEFORE i was in college just how important theyd be)
I been really confused of what makes a good character design portfolio is, what to include, etc. And this is video actually makes me less lost, so thank you Jackie!!
Really hope to see more abt character design ^^
Review more! Loved your narrative!
I'm really not interested in drawing myself, but I LOVE character design and animation. I dunno why, but I found your videos so heartwarming! Especially when you encourage the artists.
CONGRATS OMG
I'm still kid but i love watching animator artists or chatacter designer, and i hope i will be in future one of them, and i luv your videos and art
CONGRATS!!!!
This has to be the nicest roasts I've ever seen in a while!!!
i click on this video and after one minute i see a hungarian person! I'm kind of proud...
Congratulations!! Disney is so fun. Love your videos! I've grown so much in my illustration skills from watching your tutorials, they're super helpful!
What a gentle "roast", we need more videos like this ! 😍
THANK YOU FOR THE TIPS. In my presentation maybe I did them too much cleaning out instead of sketching and different views as you said. And if you could take a look at my portfolio it would help me to know my weaknesses.
CONGRATULATIONS ON THE DISNEY CHARACTER DESIGN HIRE NGL MY DREAM JOB!!! 🫶✨
congratulations!!!!
Both portfolios are very cool 🥺🥺🥺
Hey! You probably don't remember me, (since so many people were there) but I met you at Fan Expo today! It was super cool and I just wanted to say that I love your art!
love esthers style so so much omg
I love Eszter's work! I've been following her on instagram for a bit now! I'm not gonna lie hungarian enimation students tend to have the same style i see everywhere. Its not necessarily bad but as a hungarian its particvularly easy to spot the MOME or METU artstyle. Eszter's work is a breath of fresh air. I fall in love with the characters every time
What’s her instagram, I can’t seem to find it
@@EternalEudaimonia_ @ehszter
Do u have her Instagram? Love her art
@ehszter@@Marie-sn7ci
It is @Ehszter :)
its a saturday night and i just found out what i wanna be when im older thanks to this video. Although im not excited to have to learn how to draw animals. But i can draw wolves since i wanted to be one when i was 9.
Congrats on the new job
Never did anything art wise as a job/school just a hobby, always loved character design. Lovvveee this vid
This is really helpful!!!, I’m not going into the industry but the college I want grants scholarships and one of them is based around an art portfolio.
I like the sketches in the background of the second persons
I'm gonna be in 10th grade in September and I'm starting to build my portfolio so thank you for this video
I dont even draw or want to be a character designer but im addicted to ur videos haha
hurray for you !!!
You would be an awesome art teacher!
this is very helpful
I wish I had these videos back in college!
I really like the first artist’s work, honestly this video was helpful
Also what portfolio websites were used for these?
I know im extremally late but congrats on your job!
"have this as your outro, because I really love it." Right...awesome advice
i just got notified that my major change went through and i have officially been accepted into my dream major!! i’m watching these videos for inspiration before the semester starts in the fall :)
hi im from peru and your videos help me to learn english much better :D
Jackie, can you make a video telling how you got accepted in Disney? I’m an 15y teenager who dream to work at Disney someday, and I don’t have any ideia how I can reach that I’m the future. This would be very helpful to me :) And congrats for you’re job! I hope you’re having the time of ur life!!
i'm only a hobby artist but damn her advice is solid, even i can tell!
Welcome to another episode of me looking at other peeps art and my brain going "i wanna do that...why can't i" while knowing why
Hello! I loved this video! So many helpful tips and tricks. Do you have any advice for portfolios past character design? I'm seeking to go into the video game industry and I'd love if you have any tricks for portfolios for different specializations.
OMG PLEASE, DO MORE VIDS LIKE THIS
It's so good to have a critical look from a professional who is just as friendly as you, so we don't get intimidated! Your tips are so on point and necessary, that's great
Esther killed that
This helps a lot thanks! Also, if you're hired by a company as a character designer, are they going to expect your you to copy their style, or do the animators copy yours?
I don't know why I'm here, but I love it
This definitely takes me back to my animation days, i would study it for years and although i gave up fully i did learn a lot and enjoy animation twice as much as i used to.
congrats jackie
omg lmao i never thought id see a TOT sponsor
Even thought I am studying graphic design at uni. I love drawing and at some point would love to study animation and character design and so on. So I find this so helpful, there are no mean comments. I love how there are no rude comments and she's not making fun of people's art😭
