Me, who has never even considered going into design: ✍️price✍️by✍️whole✍️hour✍️

Not unusual is to also use days (7.5 hours) or half-days (3.75 hours) if the work is labor-intensive. I've done this. Whatever works and gets you closer to how much the project REALLY took your time when you're finished. It's tough to make estimates. So it's super-important to save the REAL hourlists of how much you actually spent on a project. Just my 2 cents. Cheers!
you actually shouldn't price per hour lol - value based pricing is ideal because what if the project ends up being more work than anticipated and then you have to go back and ask for more money lol - or what if you charge $100 for logos but the logo is going to a big corporation like amazon or walmart when the logo itself could be worth millions; check out chris do's videos on the topic on The Futur channel
it only takes you 4 hours to do all of the preliminary work, design, and revise a t shirt?? that is so shocking to me as an amateur!! thank you for making this info accessible!!!
In this example of working for Miley, would you ever consider how high profile the client is when setting pricing considering they’re likely to make hundreds of thousands of dollars off it? Or millions if it’s an album cover
Girl... I hope you know how much you are helping students and new designers. I have learned more from you in 30-50 mins than I have from my 60-year-old professor in 4 months. I appreciate you so much and if I can recommend anything I hope that you can become a teacher for designers in the future :)
wow what a smart way to reel in the clients. never thought of making a simple brief like this before. i just send an estimate lol...but this is a great strategic way to show them that you are more capable as a committed and passionate designer than a sheet of paper w an estimate. thank you so much for being resourceful !!!!
as a branding student who wants to do exactly that, its these type of videos that make me wanna carry on !! the transparency and the truth !! and I can agree, I've dipped my toes into the world of freelance and I definitely wasn't ready for it. It is a very specific field and I definitely agree, you need at least a few years of experience in your field to be successfully able to do freelance
Are the prices you listed including usage rights? From my experience as an illustrator, I would imagine a merch line like this (for an artist of that caliber) usage rights should mutiply your working fee serveral times, paying you a much higher amount than pure working time fee.
I think she only sells the design on the garnment. The design will not be free to use to the client. Some clients get confused over that but it gets waaaaaay more expensive when you sell them the design to use for anything they want. This is why you only show them the design on mock ups first.
Thinking the same thing. I've heard that for some (high status) clients it's okay to price the work based on how much VALUE it brings to the client - not by hourly rate. Not sure how easy it's to include to the slide deck, though.
@@bvgaboo3572 I wouldn't say "never". Also yeah, her price was pretty fair but tbh she ONLY takes 4 hours for a garnment. That is amazing. If she took 2 more hours, on garnment would cost like 500$ which is quite alright.
7:20 can't believe you've designed ariana's merch now! you're incredible and the merch looks SICK! I've been missing your youtube content and rewatching it as I've been considering more design work and it's so helpful! good luck with work, it's clearly paid off!
I love your transparency in this process. A lot of people are super secretive about designing, and being completely honest is very helpful for young/new designers
This is so kind of you and so helpful to young designers. Thanks for being so detailed! I’ve been doing freelance on the side since I graduated from college ten years ago. I never considered going freelance full time because I knew it probably wouldn’t end well, lol. I don’t take that many clients now because I want to have some free time, but it’s still nice to design outside of a company’s restrictions, try different styles and practice different things whilst getting paid for your efforts!
this was really helpful, i have a question though, what if you get rejected but they somewhat use a coincidentally similar design to what you pitched, had that ever happened? is it normal? can we do something about it?
That's why deposits are a great way to safe guard yourself but I think deposits are normally around after you pitch. That's why in the pitch you don't give initial mockups or ideas regarding design but rather moodboard and keep it basic :) This is from my experience.
Not sure if it’s a common practice but I think some freelance designers and clients use an NDA. it protects both parties from leaking information. But unfortunately sometimes, you cant keep stuff like those from happening ☹️
I went to MGMT's Little Dark Age tour back in 2017 and I didn't have enough money to buy the apparel, so I ended up getting a Nalgene with the fucking cool tour logo on it. It is my baby and I take it everywhere with me. Nalgene water bottles are 100% the move in the merch department
I freaking love your videos!!! I’m a graphic designer in art school rn and your videos give me so much insight and help for the real world of my career, thank you! Your designs are so amazing they always have me like 😱🤩I look forward to watching your videos all the time!💚
I’m really obsessed with your videos! I’m an art student, and although graphic designing isn’t my specialty, I started studying it on my own while watching your videos.
I love your videos so much. Please never stop making them. As someone who is fresh out of college and trying to make it in this industry, you are incredibly helpful.
good advice on freelance - people think right out of college they will be paid for their visions, but largely you can expect to be underpaid in an office or wfh setting and your opinion is of little value - they want content, branded in their way, not a new whippersnapper. the good thing is that you get to be paid to make mistakes and learn how a true art dept should work and how to meet tough deadlines with impossible creative briefs. you can learn about freelance contracts, etc online with gig work on the side and once you have a solid 2k+/month coming in then you can take the less risky jump with a solid portfolio that isn't just filled with classwork
Thank you for sharing and your transparency throughout the video. Hot take. I believe your work is worth a lot more, especially for well established artists. It might be an idea to charge per entire projects instead of charging hourly. Your work creates a lot of value for these artists and you should be compensated properly. I enjoy your videos 👌🏾
What I like to know. How you write your orders. Like how you math your expenses into your price and taxes. So that your client sees where the money is going to. Had some who were pretty picky about it. And when do you send the order? Before, during or after your work is done? Or do you start with a deposit?
I don’t think the client should be seeing a breakdown of costs at all, it should be your charge for your service as a lump sum. The client doesn’t have to see any of the overheads etc, that’s none of their business
you inspire me so much!! after watching alot of your videos and trying my hand at some tshirt designs i've realized i want to design merch :D before then i hadn't really known what facet of graphic design i wanted to do. thank you so much for making your videos and being awesome
this helped me so much, currently im learning adobe programs to start graphic designing, i'm scared but I'm hoping for the best, I love graphic designing so I'm praying it goes well, so thank you so much for your videos, they seriously are a life saver♡♡
Loved loved LOVED this video, so inspired and so motivated. Thanks for posting the best graphic design content around, you’re literally introduced me to my dream field of work
what a great and educational video. love it! you make such great content and as a baby designer, i am so grateful for you and your dedication to educating and democratizing design. 🥺
This made me realize maybe I need some more working experience in an agency or something before going out into the wild wild world of freelancing lol. Great video !
Regarding hourly rates, when you are an experienced designer you are pretty efficient , and you would do the design really quick compared to someone’s who’s new, so hourly rate might not be the best
Wow Kel this is such an informative video, thank you so much for sharing this! It's always so interesting to see how others set up their pitch decks and I love yours!!
Thank you for this! I was recently let go from my job in advertising. I'm ready to dip my toe into becoming a freelance designer and this is amazing guidance and advice! :)
I'm one-year into freelancing just right after graduating college. It's not planned, it just happened. I also made a lot of mistakes too. I appreciate you sharing this. I just got the freelance and business and stuff book yesterday haha.
I love your videos! I don’t know why but they’re super satisfying for me. Also I Stan Miley’s new album so i can’t wait to see your work in the next video
My god, im taking a design degree and im so worried because none of my teachers explain anything about design. Thank you, Kel, for these kind of videos... srsly
freaking love your videos! You are so generous with your knowledge and you have inspired me so much to pursue an alternative line of work in graphic design! Also, I would love to watch a video on mockups... Thank you kel :) lots of love from chile!
really appreciate the transparency on your pricing. gives us smaller designers more insight on how to price our work.
