I know exactly what you mean, and I'm almost 75 (and a bloke!) Beautiful song, I've still got this single in my collection somewhere (was it coupled with reason to believe on the other side? Can't remember) Such a tragedy he left us so young.....
It's now 2022 and this song still haunts me after all those years.. 💯I feel it in my bones in my soul... When I am listen to this song, there will be always a flashback coming from a period in my youth that hitted me deep inside..
I still feel an anger at a life full of pain cut short by an early death. It's our loss, beautiful writer, beautiful songs, beautiful singer. This track is one of my all time favourites from the 60s, a time for many beautiful songs. Tim, thank you, you're never forgotten.
+winemeister Let's get one thing straight, his life was not full of pain, Tim loved the shit out of life with a disarming smile a quick sense of humor, He was introduced to hard drugs in the service when Viet Nam was still only referred to as Laos, it was place and circumstance that got him hooked on drugs ,not sadness , not pain.It of course it did not help that he was for awhile Lenny Bruce's roommate in LA, .But he was a poet and as such very in touch with his feelings and wrote out loud what many felt but could not express-as beautifully as he did.Yes he left way to early, but left us with a veritable treasure trove of great songs. It pisses me off all this pain, and misery trailing his contribution as if he were a junkie who wrote two amazing songs and died.Tim' wrote many more songs and great songs recorded by, everyone, for this feeble sad ,lonely junkie image people latch onto which is not who he was , did he have problems with drugs?, he and at least half the musicians of that day had the same experience, you bet!! Timmy crammed a whole bunch of living and great music into his 39 years. You imagine pain when you think of him, I remember his quirky sense of humor and beguiling smile and a writer of mostly gentle , private personal songs that other singers knew full well and recorded them, have you any idea just how many artists have covered his song If I Were a Carpenter? thousands from Johnny Cash, to Leonard Nimoy, to Cher , to Birds actress Tippy Hedrin, to Ricky Nelson, Scott Walker of The Walker Brothers (The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore fame),the list goes on and on.A pain riddled junkie can't produce so many amazing songs ,covered by so many famous people, why, because stone cold junkies are not in touch with their feelings, and Tim's music was all feelings his heart on his sleeve, for all to see.I did an armature living room with an old tape recorder ,rocked up version of If I were a Carpenter, somehow his widow Susan got my e mail number and said she loved it, boy that blew me away, we have remained e mail friends. There is a book about Tim and a movie being shopped around as I write this.
A painful life, that's your assumption,Tim actually enjoyed life was a cut up and loved to laugh,He encountered hard drugs in the army abroad and brought a liking for it back home and right into the drug infused 1960's music scene and I suppose being Lenny Bruce's room mate in LA, did not much help.
Eddie Black actuator I was referring to how his catalog had a lot more depth and genius than most people know from just being exposed to a couple of 'hit songs' that seeped through to fame. I really have no idea what Smith's personal life was like (other than the well known facts of his addiction); all I know is that his writing was extraordinary (IMO)
In the early 70's Tim was hanging in the UK. I saw him play a small college gig, I'm not even sure he was headlining (Jonathan Kelly ???). There weren't that many people there and I just wandered up to the front of the stage. I don't think I fully realised at the time that I was in the presence of genius. I'd like that evening back.
Tim Hardin...how in the hell has one of our greatest songwriter been completely forgotten? Reason to Believe covered by Rod Stewart, If I Were A Carpenter covered by Bobby Darin. And of course...this bit of love and romance.
You do, she would want you too, its so hard but you hold her memory and will pass it on to everyone you meet and thus she lives in your heart and the hearts with whom you share her memory. Shine on ❤
Tim Hardin; a unique voice in an era with tons of talent. Such great writing, so emotive voice. No matter who sings his songs, he really owns them on stage or in the studio. Rip Tim. You were great!
With the excellent taste You all have expressed . I will hope You listen to 1 of 2 of my lifetime faves Ralph Mc Tell " Who wrote the classic "streets Of London " Also wrote My #2 favorite song "The Grande Affaire" Which never got much play in the Philia area. I have attempted to cover it for almost 50 years and 20-30 seconds into it I stop .I feel like it is a sacrilege For anyone but Ralph McTell to do justice to this gem. It is on U Tube
Gads everytime I listen to him, I can't believe he was so good! He brings a tear to my eye, I would like more people to hear him and recognize the talent he was.
Tim Hardin was my idol growing up in Cambridge Mass where he played at the Club 47....he inspired me to play and sing his tunes. A great artist with such emotionally charged lyrics...sad he is gone.
I first hear this song as the theme song of a German movie. Neither I knew the song title nor the artist, took me months to search on the internet for it in vain . Lol Think it was released before my parents were born but here I am.... Loving it
Voice is mellifluous.Words scream from heart.Music is akin to "moonlight sonata" in tenderness and treatment.Music is caged in these soulful words and sets the silhouette of a vulnerable lover who reels under many questions at a certain crossword of life and wishes to untangle it but lost .Music is piercing and unforgettable. Never heard a male voice so sweet ,so subdued and yet incredibly powerful despite vulnerability.Actually its strenghth lies hidden in this insecurity.
Ill feel the same Petra.i lost mine son and 12years young. Drunking and drugs car drivet hit him.He was driving to the red light and my son wash green.I will never for give this guy.Don't drive drunk god deamned.
I understand you, lost my daughter in 2001, the 24th may. She was 3 years old. This period of the year is just horrible 😥. I think of you Petra, really.
I was searching through some 60s Dutch Pop (which was my own little protest back in the 60s when the Government told us that we could no longer listen to Radio Caroline, Radio London, Atlantic and other 'Pirate Stations'. Instead we were forced to listen to effing Radio One by the BBC. So my little protest was to find a Dutch 'Pirate' - Radio Veronica where they played loads of British, American and some European stuff. Most Dutch stuff was crap (to me) but a few groups stood out. Coincidentally, Brainbox copied 'Reason to Believe' and I have to say it is brilliant (as is their Album cleverly called Brainbox). Have a listen to it on UA-cam. The album's also worth a listen. I'm now 70 but still regard myself as an everlasting South London Mod. Mick C.
Radio Veronica was the best Pirate sender and wellknown all over Europe, It was devastated news to hear the government decided to pull the plug out of this popular sender. We listen to this semder almost day and night. So that was a immense loss for us not hearing this great music all day long. There were artists who became famous in those days like: The Golden Earrings, Hans Vermeulen & Anita Meyer, Robert Long, Kayak and many others. All Dutch bands and singers. But there are others I learned to love like: the Moody Blues, Cat Stevens etc. Nowadays we do have a music sender Sky. We also have the television music sender like Xite to watch music and video's. Last but not least we are able to watch UA-cam for our fav. music from long ago.
What about "the Golden Earings"? Ever heard about them Mick? They were well known in a lot of countries also in the USA & Canada I heard from a very dear friend who lives in Canada. Songs like "Radar love" & "My grand piano" etc....
I remember Ann Nightingale had a programme on Radio One when a celebrity selected their 10 favourite records. In 1975. Twiggy chose Hang on to a Dream' as one of hers and I liked it.
THIS IS MY FAVOURITE PIECE OF MUSIC OF ALL TIME. But only 5 years or so ago I allowed myself against my better judgement, to fall in love one last time with a greek goddess of unimaginable beauty while dancing Tango with her to this piece of music. It was for the short period of time that lasted the most powerful and enchanting love affair I have ever had. Sadly she decided to walk away just like the protagonist of this song.
in 1987 my father was about to be dying in the hospital. for a short break between waiting, a girlfriend took me to the movies. this song is the key in the movie looking for eileen. thank you Martje, still love you dad.
I haven't heard this song in over 30 years and it still makes me cry.
Provoques the deepest feelings of melancholy...yep, its timeless...thank you Tim Hardin..😢
I was trying to think back, when. Thank yoou
I know exactly what you mean, and I'm almost 75 (and a bloke!) Beautiful song, I've still got this single in my collection somewhere (was it coupled with reason to believe on the other side? Can't remember) Such a tragedy he left us so young.....
Yes it does bring back the memories.... what a time that was to be alive.... ❤
His loss...our loss. Incredible musician.
Beautiful!!! A dream from other times. With a sadness....
"She" being the lost reality of humanity.
This song is beyond perfect.
Yes i agree, used to be played a lot on Radio Caroline.
It is the 2021 and this song keeps on given me the chillls. A song never to be repeated.
I always follow this up with Sisters Of Mercy by Leonard Cohen. One saddens, the other soothes.
this is when I was a teenager .. Gandalf - Hang on to a dream = almost the same song but slow .. nice too
The song has been successfully covered by many artists
It's now 2022 and this song still haunts me after all those years.. 💯I feel it in my bones in my soul... When I am listen to this song, there will be always a flashback coming from a period in my youth that hitted me deep inside..
Tim Hardin never forget this great songwriter and "Hang on.." is a masterpiece!
Bob Dylan once said Tim was America’s greatest living songwriter. I met him a few months before he died. Will always be a favorite.
I still feel an anger at a life full of pain cut short by an early death. It's our loss, beautiful writer, beautiful songs, beautiful singer. This track is one of my all time favourites from the 60s, a time for many beautiful songs. Tim, thank you, you're never forgotten.

Eddie Black
I feel like I could have written a very similar comment about Elliott Smith.

Eddie Black Any more news about a movie or book about Tim? I am waiting because I know it will happen. He deserves it!
A generation of sublime singer songwriters. Nothing now comes close.
In the early 70's Tim was hanging in the UK. I saw him play a small college gig, I'm not even sure he was headlining (Jonathan Kelly ???). I have never forgotten
Thinking of losing my mama, my Jean, to Alzheimer’s disease. I didn’t find this song. It found me. Thank you to Stella for this gift. Rip, Tim.
This song, played a thousand years in the past or a thousand years in the future would have the same power, impact, beauty.
Thank you Tim Hardin for giving us this beautiful song. Still gets me emotional.
Still as touchingly beautiful and poignant as it was all those decades ago.
I lost my mama this morning. How do you live life without both of your parents? 💔 I will always miss you mama.😭
You do, she would want you too, its so hard but you hold her memory and will pass it on to everyone you meet and thus she lives in your heart and the hearts with whom you share her memory. Shine on ❤
Hahahaha
This song is so hauntingly sad yet beautiful 😥❤
Tim Hardin's moment of perfection!
He had lots of moments of perfection.
Tim is so underrated. I love this beautiful masterpiece. What a songwriter and what a voice.
beautiful no other word
"You can sing it with a cry in your voice" Neil Diamond said that I think. A brilliant example of it in this song.
The most beautiful piano intro ever..Pheww what asong.
Tim Hardin; a unique voice in an era with tons of talent. Such great writing, so emotive voice. No matter who sings his songs, he really owns them on stage or in the studio. Rip Tim. You were great!

Incredibly beautiful
This guy ,though apparently influential, is so underrated!
Beautiful Song ♥️ From Italy
Tim Hardin was one of those people born with an overwhelming burden of unrelievable pain.
heel erg mooi.dank u wel.

A forgotten classic.
An amazing piece of music that is part of the film Fever Pitch. Beautiful.
From the Dutch film ' Zoeken naar Eileen'.... Thom Hoffman main actor and Rudolf van den Berg (sort of family) as director. Great film !

Ahh, melancholy. Hmm, so nice.
Don't miss the touching version from 1979 - Tim alone with his (Mum's?) piano. You'll find it here on UA-cam.
Hardin was a genius all over.
+Per Theander That is his grand mother who helped raise him , her name was Manner Hardin, what a strange first name huh!
Per Theander I loved that version but sadly it’s been removed! 😭😢😭

Mamma mia che canzone...
È di una bellezza (e tristezza) esagerata!
such a pure and vulnerable voice. what can we do in this world we now have to address?
Quelle finesse et sensibilité!!!!
J'accord.
C'est vrai.

In love sacrifice (letting go on a certain level) is the gift you offer the departed. As on an old cowboy once sang: happy trails (to you)!
On this moment i miss someone. This song makes me cry
