I used to live in the Middle Rhine area (Neuwied/Koblenz) and saw the Nits live in concert at the 'Rheinkultur' Festival in Bonn in the early 90's 😀 Have moved to NZ nearly 20 years ago, though. People here were laughing at me at the beginning when I'd call a hill a "mountain" 😄
I have loved this song since my childhood. A few years ago I consciously heard this song while on holiday in Holland in Zandvoort & it just felt like I just had to do it. Today the song connects me even more with this beautiful place. I'm looking forward to being there again in the summer. Best regards from Germany :)
The Nits are a very underrated band. They did so much wonderful songs! I saw them live in 1992 and I met them after the show. They are very nice people, as much as they are inspired. Hats off to the Nits!!
I too saw them in the early 90's, at the 'Rheinkultur' Festival in Bonn, Germany 😀 They had released their album 'Ting' then, and it was a great show! 😊 Free entry, too! 😁 Lost track of them after their '98 'Alankomaat' album, also because of my move to NZ a couple of years later; They're completely unknown here, sadly
They remind me of The Waterboys! Another great group from the same time frame. Fisherman's Blues was their big song. Adding this song to my favorites list!!!!!
In the late 1980`s the Nits had a big hit with this song in austria , too . Hearing it again , more than 20 years later , it is still , what it ever was : A great piece of music ..... peter
Loved the NITS in the 80''ies. We were dancing the nights through while our fathers and mothers were at work or for any yoga-shops elsewhere. We loved the Dutch mountains a lot during those weekends. Everybody was fuzzed, but there was always an idiot to have a walk with the dogs
I stumbled across them when I was lending cassette tapes from the local library as a kid. Since they only had a few dozen, I eventually tried them all. Good times.
I was born in the valley of bricks Where the river runs high above the rooftops I was waiting for the cars coming home late at night From the Dutch mountains I was standing in the valley of rock Up to my belly in an early fog I was looking for the road to a green painted house In the Dutch mountains In the Dutch mountains Mountains I met a woman in the valley of stone She was painting roses on the walls of her home And the moon is a coin with the head of the queen Of the Dutch mountains Mountains I lost a button of my shirt today It fell on the ground And it was rolling away Like a trail leading me back To the Dutch mountains To the Dutch mountains Mountains I met a miller on the back of a cow He was looking for the wind but he didn't know how I said: Follow the cloud that looks like a sheep In the Dutch mountains In the Dutch mountains In the Dutch mountains Mountains Mountains Buildings
Used to listen to this and Waterboys making wine on Lake Geneva back in the day, listening to the LA Dodger's beat my Oakland A's in World Series 4-1, not a pretty finish for Nor Cal....but I was there and the Nits were there.
'Montes' lol My mom let me hear this song while eating breakfast, right now I'm 14, and now we both know where the sample came from, thanks to wikipedia, and it's making us both laugh Love this song
There is no way in English to write the word Mountains with a true Dutch accent. The only way is to come overhere or meet someone Dutch abroad to really give an understanding.
Billy Joel`s "The Downeaster Alexa" which came out two years after "In the Dutch Mountains", has, in terms of rhythm and harmony, an eerily similar feel` about it.
Actually there do exist mountains even in The Netherlands. Visit Nijverdal, Holten and Hellendoorn. There you will find the Sallandse Heuvel Rug which is a mountain with a rather high view stage to see many nearby villages and cities. (Closest village to the hilltop = Nijverdal)
Since bonaire, saba and estausius are integrated in the nethetlands we have some real (albeit rather low) mountains. Everything in Europe are just hills
No(t yet) Although some loonatics came up with the idea of constructing one a while ago... Yeah, right.. ;) Interpretations: #1: the comparison one can make with going uphill is driving against the (strong) wind, especially driving a bicycle. Ditto downhill of course. Winds can be strong in the open, flat countryside in NL, especially the costal areas. # 2:perceiving the silhouette of a large city from a distance (with its tall buildings) as mountains. #3: clouds (see post below).
Such an amazing song, heard of it because of Heidevolk's metal version . I would love if someone would put together a nice yt video fo that cover too :)
You're right, there are no mountains in The Netherlands, only hills in the south. What he means with Dutch mountains are certain clouds which appear to be unique to The Netherlands. Seeing those clouds in the distance, they look like mountains.
Ahahah... precisely not. Holland is called "Pays-Bas" in French, which means Low Land or Low Country. There are no mountains at all over there. Same for the north part of Belgium, which is often called The Flat Land :-) I guess the title of the song refers to reality as we would like it to be, but is not.
Correction "Netherlands" is "Les Pays-Bas" in french. Holland is "La Hollande" (sorry, it's not the same despite popular belief). Well in the utmost south of the Netherlands there are some "mountains", and when the Tour de France was there it even led to a polka-dot-jersey to be given there (Couberg in Valkenburg), but I guess that's all we got here in the Netherland ;) (Yeah, I'm Dutch myself) :)
+TheRealTricky Oh... I am Belgian and never made a difference between "Les Pays-Bas" et "La Hollande"... But you are right "Pays-Bas" is the equivalent of "The Nether-lands", worldly speaking. Thanks!
Unfortunately many Dutch don't even know (or care) about the difference, but I do. (Well, some people from Nortern Netherlands think I'm Belgian due to my accent. I live close to the Belgian border. Would that have something to do with it?

I was born in the valley of bricks
Where the river runs high above the rooftops
I was waiting for the cars coming home late at night
From the Dutch mountains
I was standing in the valley of rock
Up to my belly in an early fog
I was looking for the road to a green painted house
In the Dutch mountains
In the Dutch mountains
Mountains
I met a woman in the valley of stone
She was painting roses on the walls of her home
And the moon is a coin with the head of the queen
Of the Dutch mountains
Mountains
I lost a button of my shirt today
It fell on the ground
And it was rolling away
Like a trail leading me back
To the Dutch mountains
To the Dutch mountains
Mountains
I met a miller on the back of a cow
He was looking for the wind but he didn't know how
I said: Follow the cloud that looks like a sheep
In the Dutch mountains
In the Dutch mountains
In the Dutch mountains
Mountains
Mountains
Buildings
Many thanks for that!

There are actually mountains in Holland. The highest is Vaalserberg. This 'mountain' is 322,7 meters high. Pretty high for a mostly flat country :p
you cannot cal that a mountain the official term for a mountain under 500 metres is a hill
Wouter Boender yes you can, i just did :p I know, but to me it is a mountain lol. Strange enough, they call it Vaalserberg, nog Vaalserhill.. hehe.
+Wouter Boender No, above 200 meters called a mountain, so you were wrong, you can Google it if you want, so there are Mountains in Holland!!
+Simon K Above 200 meters called a mountain, you were right, and he was wrong!!
+Simon K Actually Saba is a municipality since 2010 of the netherlands and saba is 800 meters high so it's the highest point of the netherlands.
