    The AH-64A Apache helicopter simulator, released by Microprose in 1986.
    The graphics are nice, sound is OK and the level of realism is good.
    It is one of the best simulators on the Commodore and was very popular when released.

    This game was magic. I spent so many hours playing this on C64. The manual was so in depth it practically taught you to fly a heli, never mind play the game.

    Despite the clunky graphics compared to today's games, it was leading edge in its day! I spent a lot of hours playing it and even got to the point where I was keeping a mission logbook and videotaping some of those missions as well. I even won the Medal of Honor when all I was doing was trying to save my a$$ after flying into a trap where all I could do was fight the best I could and limp back to base hoping no one would shoot a spitball at me cuz it would've knocked me out of the sky! Played a lot of games over the years but this memory sticks with me.

      Ah yes, the memories... Even with the rudimentary graphics, this game did simulate wind and the general rule was stay below 100 feet, better yet stay below 50 feet. Also, if you had succesfully 'jammed' an incoming missile, you still had to take evasive action otherwise the 'dead' missile would keep flying straight ahead and you'd fly 'into its path.'
      And when confronted by a ZSU-23-4 "Shilka" just turn away, low low low and get the hell out!
      Later I found out that using unguided FFAR rockets for most targets offered better survivability because all you needed was shoot, get down and low low low. With the Hellfires, you had to keep the target in sight else the infrared targeting would lose the target and you'd waste a missile.
      The Russian Hind-D helicopter was a nightmare because first warning you got most times was something hitting you with its 30 mm cannon. Think of a *flying* Shilka and you get the idea.
      My general tip for a succesful mission: in reality, you would have scout helicopters (Kiowas or MD-500s) to spot targets that you could then engage. In this game you're on your own. Just fly a bit too high to attract enemy fire and search radar. Once they start firing, get down low low low again and fly towards your own lines. On your in-flight map, your gunner will have plotted the enemy targets and batteries spotted.
      Then it's a matter of flying in from a compass angle where the least fire is expected. Take out the Shilkas first, then the guided missile launchers. After you've succesfully destroyed the dangerous targets (hopefully without a Hind-D joining the party), you can destroy the now defenseless tanks!

      It was mine too. I consider it the best C64 game of all time. It was great that you could change the loadout of your weapons as well as choose from so many other options. You could also fly a different mission each time instead of only get half a dozen canned missions that most sims would give you.

    I still remember getting the Medal of Honor in this game only once. During the European campaign, the primary mission was similar to this video, a tank column and the secondary was A&A emplacements. I even downed two Hinds and destroyed a base with an HQ, Bunker and other structures. Lost one engine, was out of ammo and getting chased by a third Hind on the way back to the base. The Hind hit me at about 100ft in the air during my landing taking out the other engine and causing me to crash land from a decent height, which usually killed you. I survived and the chopper has a ton of damage and I got a Purple Heart and MOH. Could never get another MOH. One of the greatest games ever.

    The presentation was top notch. I became so addicted to this game that I even developed some 'combat fatigue!' I had been playing untill late at night. I was getting sleepy but still wanted to play one more mission. Incidentally, that mission was also a night mission. Being very tired, I didn't pay much attention to the targets and other indicators. All I knew was everything east of my airbase was enemy. So I started firing away but then got the message: "Cease fire! Friendly troops have been hit!"
    Not amused, I turned my chopper around and headed for home. My post mission debrief read more or less:
    "The Primary Objective was *untouched.* The Secondary Objective was *untouched.* Other enemies took light casualties and the enemy was overjoyed by your cooperation."
    Ouch. No medals that time but a permanent reprimand in my service record...

    Still way better than Fortnite. I've emulated this game before and ignored the graphics, it was truly a fun experience, but since then I've gotten the official 5.25 disk game for my C64, and I'll tell you it really is magical playing this game on true hardware like a C64. Would highly recommend anyone who loves retro tech to play this game.

    I have so many memories of watching my dad play this when we had a Commodore 64. I would sit in the room where he'd play the game, and be all fascinated while my dad played this. Unfortunately, I wasn't that great with games at the time, and this was months before we got a Nintendo (as in NES) in 1991. I miss playing games on that C64 we used to have, as it bought the farm in 1994 :(

    A great example of how strategy and mission prep mechanics made-up for the graphical limitations. The debriefing at the end was simple, but added to the realism. It felt like a serious military simulator. Not a quick pick-up cartridge game on a Coleco or Atari system.

    The C64 version is simply the best. I was so excited by the Amiga version when I got it. Improved graphics and sound. Then I fired it up. Oh cool, a rotor sound! But.....that's it. A rotor sound. Constantly droning at the EXACT SAME PITCH ALL THE TIME. It gave you no sense of speed. Not like the "growling" of the engines in the C64 version. I was SO disappointed. I always felt a detachment and fog-of-war because of this playing the Amiga version.

  • @MrApolloTom

    Possibly the greatest game ever for its own time. I've been playing it for 30 years on and off and the complexity of the enemy weapons models and the random mission generation still keep it interesting. You have to use imagination with the graphics but an accurate perspective view for 1986 is so impressive. I've still never quite figured out how the medals are selected though - 5000+ is a high score for one mission!

    • @MrApolloTom
      @MrApolloTom 5 років тому

      Also most emulation versions have problems with missile firing. The best version I have found is this csdb.dk/release/?id=100655

    • @MrComputerRetro
      @MrComputerRetro  5 років тому +1

      Yes, it's quite an impressive helicopter simulation for the 8bits. As far as the medals are concerned, selection is dependent on the player's military rank. Since this was my first mission and I was only a Sergeant, it didn't give me a better medal despite the score.

    • @MrApolloTom
      @MrApolloTom 5 років тому +2

      @@MrComputerRetro Yes you appear to be right. The manual always claimed rank has no effect on medals but I tried looking at the code (surprisingly, the after-game code is in BASIC) and the rule for the Medal of Honour seems to require minimum rank of 1st Lieutenant.

    My first ever video game. I was 6 or 7 years old. I remember my dad couldn't figure out how to take off for nothing. I remember sitting on the bed next to him reading the manual as best as I could and him just trying to hit all kinds of buttons for what seemed like hours. The next day when he was at work I walked into the computer room (his bedroom), opened the giant ass box, put the keyboard overlay on. Dug into the manual and got the game booted it up with a fast-boot cartridge (Or perhaps it didn't, this might have been one of the games that wouldn't load with command+run/stop... maybe I pulled the old Load"*",8,1 as I saw him do it at least 10 times now) and when he came back from work (He was an aircraft mechanic working on helicopters at what is now JBLM), he caught me not only on our brand new commodore 64 computer, but also flying the Apache and blowing up enemies. I never got permission to touch the computer, but to be fair I wasn't necessarily told that I couldn't touch it either, as he assumed it was all beyond my understanding anyways. But, here I was playing the game and didn't know if he should be mad at me or impressed. Very fond memory. I was in love with simulators ever since. RIP Dad.
    The manuals that came with these Microprose games had so much detail, I was so immersed, I thought I was really a pilot with military technical manuals getting ready to do some crazy biz.

    This was was amazingly brilliant! Unless you owned the tape version like I did. From when you chose the weapons on your hele, to when you actually took-off, was 46 MINUTES!! And that’s no including the time it took to load the game in the first place. It was still amazing tho. Loved it

  • @Frostie3672
    @Frostie3672 4 роки тому +2

    Great memories this video brings back, the hours I spent playing this game (I'd even go as far as to call it a simulator as it was way ahead of it's time!) , god knows how many of those hours were spent waiting for the game to load between missions though lol.
    The amount of times I managed to make it back to base despite having a ton of damage, upon landing you really felt like you'd accomplished something because it took all your concentration to keep the apache in the air & flying straight & level. The simulation aspect of this game was brilliant, popping up from behind a hill to launch at targets then ducking behind to dodge incoming fire, using auto rotation in case of dual engine failure, in the end I became really good at this sim & was awarded the medal of honour numerous times. Despite the awesome visuals and accurate physics you have with modern pc simulations like dcs world there's still something very special about gunship on the C64.
    Another memory I have is taking the game back to where I brought it from because every copy I had always failed l to load after the mission was complete, I think after taking my copy of the game back 4 damn times I finally gave up and borrowed the game from a friend & copied it on my twin cassette deck, that copy worked flawlessly, whether the shop I brought it from had a bad batch I have no idea.
    I remember getting hold of an action replay mk4 cartridge, when I brought a 1541 disc drive, which had the ability to rip nova load games to disc, that literally cut the loading times down to seconds which totally transformed playing games like this and airborne ranger.
    I had the mk7 action replay cartridge at the time but datel electronics removed the ability to rip nova load games from future version of the AR cartridge, I guess due to pressure from microprose etc but luckily my mate had an older AR so I borrowed it to convert all the nova load titles I had to disc.
    Probably would have brought the game on disc if I could but in the uk finding disc versions was difficult as tape versions were much more common in the uk & Europe, I think disc copies were more common in the usa.

    I loved this game but something went wrong with it on my C64. After playing it for years, one day I took off and had my rear rotor blown off (causing the chopper to slide into a death skid in one direction until I hit the ground). I started again and the same thing happened, then again and again. Basically as soon as I saw an enemy they would shoot my rotor off and I would spin in circles with no way to recover, it was a bummer. There, I said my peace.

      +jmorris023 Too bad! Was it an original disk? I had a similar problem with Falcon on the Amiga. After years of gameplay the original disk got corrupted, triggering some copy protection code which would let you take off and then damage your plane.

If it hadn´t been your first mission, you certainly would have gotten at least a silver star if not a distinguished flying cross for that performance. Unfortunately it was your 1st mission and such high decorations are not given to sub officer pilots.....you just got promoted to WO 1st calss =)
