I played this when I was very young, beat it when I was about eight. Really helped hone my hand-eye & critical thinking skills. Was an epic journey when you were so young. Thanks for the playthrough!
@@zazelby In the old Accolade boxing game, Fight Night, there was a sumo guy, so I created a boxer with him and changed his skin to green, and called him The Yamo. LOL
I was 14 when this came out in 1985. Had it on a tape drive. It took 45 minutes to load! Also remember impossible mission and bard's tale. BBS boards were fun. 800 baud modems etc.. Summer games with hackey sack also
Can we all just agree that this game is fantastic? Awesome design for its time, really. I played the PC version back then, and boy did I enjoy it. I never managed to get beyond 12:08 back then. But I played it again a few years ago and managed to beat it.
a fun one. I can't forget the noise the green sumo made when he appeared. I never got that far though. This and Montezuma's Revenge were my favorites as a kiddo.
No problem glad you enjoyed it, check out my Spectrum World Record speedrun video of the spectrum version on this channel, I completed it in 5m52secs :-D
Thanks for the memories. Amazing what they did with KB and not MB or GB. Also amazing you took it to your last fall and still made it, barely. Awesome.
Zeusdaz - The Unemulated Retro Game Channel I'm glad I lived when I lived.. Seeing the dawn of video gaming & being a kid in the 80's was totally rad!!
In 1985 at the age of 10 I couldn't get past the blue room where you had to jump over the little light dots. I never knew I was two screens away from beating the game.
The jingle when you pick up one of the lanterns on the C64 version, will forever be ingrained in my grey cells. As well as the startling sound, when you get zapped. Towards the end, there is a room with four levels of moving electrical fields, each with their own pattern, that frightened me as a kid because of the difficulty. Also, the version I had would often crash somewhat before this screen :( One of my absolute favourites though! When you memorize the game, it becomes a simple test of reflexes and really quite nice and relaxing to play. Perhaps the first game I ever completed. It was also fun to punch the rather simpleminded ninja when he stood above one of those exploding fountains. He would be temporarily stunned and therefore die in the explosion. Just generally fun to pester him really. Which was easy to do, since both the sumo and ninja kind of mirror what you do. But the shortest way to get to you, can lead to their own downfall :) Two player mode was limited fun though. Who wants to be the sumo hulk?
I know this makes no f***ing sense whatsoever, but the cow @ 7:35 scared the hell out of me. I was 4 year old at the time lol. This game gets 10/10 for having a bad guy who shows up and then proceeds to...YAWN at you. And for inspiring my cousin to run up to light bulbs and jump at them while mimicking the stupid sfx :D
I could only dream about owning the mighty C64 (I remember vividly seeing the advert 'elephantine memory' in WH Smiths) I had a good friend in the 80's who had a cousin (yep, that's how protracted it was) who had a 2nd hand C64. It was a privilege to watch him play such games a Bruce Lee, Mission Impossible (speech!!!) etc Not in touch with them now but I have powerful PCs, Xbox Series X's but it still doesn't compare to the jump between ZX81 to ZX Spectrums and C64s
I remember playing this game with two friends of mine who were brothers, I played Bruce Lee and one of them the sumo guy, while the other was watching. The kendo warrior got his arse kicked by both all the time and we were laughing like hell, it was about 35 years ago but I still remember that afternoon.

It's actually supposed to be a room full of gold treasure,...summut I only recently realised a few years back,...and that's coming from the current world speedrun record holder of the ZX Spectrum version! (vid of that on my channel) :-)
I played this as a kid. The levels change somewhat and the monsters get harder after the first playthrough as I recall. I know for a fact that there is NO platform to initially land on in the blue room with the sweepers (as I called them) at 12:07 in the second playthrough; you have to land and jump immediately. That was enough to trip me up as a kid so bad I never finished it a second time.
I had the Apple II version of this game. In hindsight, I'm amazed over how short this game is, considering how long it took me to complete it when I was in middle school.

recently I played it again after 36 years and its still much fun. it gave me chills. I felt the childhood again.
I never liked the sticky controls though in this version, Bruce was hard just to get off a platform, the ZX version however was extremely smooth.
@@ZEUSDAZ Yes agree. Controls were a bit harse.

In this PS1 game you can actually control Bruce Willis, as himself. He is using a lot of his movie cliches, though.
