It’s safer and easier to have it near the passenger side for guest convenience and on the wheel for driver convenience. Plus one thing I noticed that no one really talks about is the safety features. A lot of Audi models adjust airbag deployment based on occupant weight, height, and even seating position to help adapt the airbag force during an accident. In addition the seat belts tense up ever so slightly whenever someone is tailgating you to help anticipate the “inevitable” rear accident. Furthermore, the rear headrest will increase height and angle to help restrict whiplash during a rear end collision. I own the A5 Sportback. The small storage next to the volume knob is for the key (I know it’s stupid but that’s what it’s for) and the deep storage compartment left of the steering wheel is for the manual pouch that fits perfectly in there. Final note, the volume knob next to the shifter is the best placement. You don’t have to lean forward to change the volume on the dash. If you drive like me with your right hand on the shifter, you can move 2 inches over to adjust the volume or skip to next or previous tracks.
Agreed, it falls perfectly to hand in the natural arc of your arm. The whole centre console has excellent ergonomics and I’ll miss the knob MMI system they seem to be doing away with in the newer models (S5 owner)
I have to say, having owned this car for a week now, that I’m in love with the technology and placement of everything. I never have to divert my eyes from the road, the tactile functions are so satisfying, finger hovering displays the function of your buttons on the climate and radio controls. The volume knob on the right is prefect if your navigator needs to pause or lower the volume to tell you something. You still have your own volume control. I feel like they really went through a lot of realistic scenarios to design this interior.
The Car can only measure Tire Pressure while moving because it calculates it using each Tire's rotation speed, which it takes from the ABS sensors. An underinflated tire has a smaller diameter then an overinflated one, thus it spins faster relative to the vehicle speed.
That was the old, first generetion TMS.... Logic behind these newer/newish systems is that each sensor goes to "sleep" mode after a while, to save the battery (replacing the battery requiers removing the tire, which can be PIA for some people). "Speed" (i.e. rotational force) is needed to wake the sensor from sleep. The (very bigh IMHO) con of these system is that you don't have the info about your tire pressures in the second most important situation you need this info - when you are starting a drive (all you get is info about pressures at the time the system was last online, and that was at the end of your last drive). The most important situation when you need tire pressure info is slow to medium leak during long high speed drives (for example on autobahn).
@@dakibmw Actually the Audi/VW system doesn't use batteries at all. There is no sensor in the tire. As the above comment mentioned, the car uses the ABS system to look at relative wheel speed and measures tire pressure that way. Audi/VW does this in most (all?) their cars. The benefit is that you don't need to order tires with sensors in them.
@@BejanKanga yeah, it seems a lot more reliable, cuzz abs sersors work way longer than a wheel sensor that can be easily damaged. but i believe it will get tricked by different tyre compounds. still good enough to warn you that you need to inflate your tyres.
@@SoulTouchMusic93 You reset the monitor when you change tires, etc. Then it relearns what the proper rotation speed is (assuming you reset it after properly re-inflating your wheels.)
I believe the reason you don't get tire pressures until you're rolling is because of the way TPMS sensors work, not by actually measuring pressure but by measuring and comparing rolling radius across all four tires. The placement of the washer fill might be odd at first but you get to love it pretty fast. You also get used to the volume knob placement pretty quickly if you own any Audi that has that placement. When my right hand isn't on the wheel it's on the shifter and so the MMI and volume are right there..muscle memory. I just use that little storage spot for the fob. Not sure if that's the intent, but I put it either there or in the cupholder slot. And the sunshade...I love it. Every car needs one regardless of whether they have a glass panel or traditional sunroof. Allows air movement without any buffeting. Or bugs. Finally, your phone is still in the car.
The TPMS is the same on my BMW as well (it's a 2004 though, not 2019, no bias, I have owned an Audi before, just facts). I guess it's cheaper than having a separate pressure sensor in your wheel stem for all 4 wheels. Works well enough, telling from experience.
@@sippe3985 If you are responding to me, not really a fan boy, just a fan of good design. Plenty of gripes about my car as well, goes for all of the cars I've owned.
@@mraaaaaaa I'll bet that's it. A system that simply measures the difference in time it takes for 4 transmitters to ping at fixed points and then alert when one or more reach a fixed % based on you setting the system is probably pretty cheap, like a hall sensor in a distributor or an ABS ring. Individual sensors that measure actual pressure might be equally cheap but very few ppl will monitor them, and are happy enough to have the car tell them to tell someone else to fill the tires. I'd prefer to have the option, but I check pressures weekly so I really don't need it. I imagine it's more useful on an M3 than an RS5 as the former is much more a track car. My S excels at eating up highway miles and spirited mountain drives but I wouldn't do more than track days with it stock.
The small slot in the center stack is for the key. The cubby to the left of the steering wheel perfectly fits a glock. And the volume knob is where your hand naturally rests when not on the steering wheel or gear selector..
@@pauls1814 according to audi. you are wrong. its an electronic unit, called a gear selector. not a mechanical unit, witch would technically be a shifter.
@@pauls1814 Nearly all automatic vehicles use a gear selector, and here recently most have went to electronic units for them. They used to be cable operated, essentially just a lever attached to a steel cable that pushes/pulls an arm that either twists a shaft or moves the shaft inward/outward (or both in some cases, similar to FWD manual shifter cable setups) but yeah as Brian said, they hardly ever break and the only way i could see an electronic one messing up is if you spilled something directly into it, and even then it's gonna be moderately resistant to moisture because it's going in an automobile interior
@@tonypechiney6179 The battery jumper terminals, daylights that turn into turnlights, the volume knob right next to the gear lever (the most logical place IMO since that's where your right hand is in manuals a lot of the time), there's a lot of stuff in other videos too. Also the indicator for the turnlights in the mirror is in most, if not all newer cars from VW group.
The volume scroll wheel is for the driver so that you could change the volume without taking your hands off the steering wheel, and the one on the dashboard is for the passenger. I think it's the best way of doing it and it should't be a point to criticize. IMO
I drove an A6 for a week with the controls in the same place. It actually makes a lot of sense. Your hand naturally falls there when using the armrest. Iirc, the A6 had a bunch more audio controls down there too.
Man, when Ferrari puts a bunch of controls on the driver oriented performance car, they get praised, when Audi does it, they get complaints, from Doug DeMuro.
Audi has been killing it as of recent. The new A5 is very nice of itself, and the RS5 just dials up the fun factor to 11. The biggest selling point however is the fact quattro is standard - driving a M3 or C63 in winter in Canada is doable with winter tires but 400hp+ with RWD still is hairy. The RS5 with winter would almost be a non-issue.
They probably didn't think about the quattro badge being hidden by the number plate because european number plates are less tall, so in europe we don't have that problem.
@A real petrol-head Like everyone i think no plates are the best, but the problem with the dutch plates in my country is that they are yellow and fucking ugly, you can't even buy a custom number/letter combination. But i agree with what you're saying
@A real petrol-head same with Australian plates, especially in my state. They are what we call "slimline" plates and have similar dimensions to EU plates. In fact you can buy legal EU style plates, and lot of people with EU cars have those plates.
Jokes aside, people adjust volume via the steering wheel on these luxury cars - thus it makes sense that the volume knob is closer to the passenger side as the passenger is the main person using it!
@@steverapos3904 That's exactly what I was told when I bought the TTS a few years ago, which has the same arrangement: "That volume knob is for the passenger."
Snake Eyes honestly I see drivers of every car maker not use their blinker, I don’t really see BMW drivers using them any less. You just notice it more with bmws because it’s a meme
mancubwwa hahahahahaha so true I told my American cousin about the A45 AMG that has almost 400bhp from 2.0 4 cylinder and he didn’t know what to say because his v8 car(not sure which one) made a little less then the A45
FYI the reason the car can't read tire pressure while stationary is because newer Audi's use an indirect tpms system. The car uses the abs wheel speed sensors to pick up differences in rotational speed to measure tire pressure.
@@silentrocker33 I find AMG cars rather obscene: They have an exhaust note to liven up the dead and kill the alive, overstyled aero bits and rims befitting of a truck. Maybe it is because I am part of the car-people, but they are far from a sleeper, I think. They do not have "the cool" of effortless performance.
@Doug_DeMuro. I've been watching your videos for a long time now. They are near perfect. I think you are missing one little clip from every video. The clip where you start the car. Takes 2 shots 1 from the inside and one from the outside of the car. It's a special feeling for some people when you start a car and it brings a smile to their face.
yeah, move your hand away from the volume knob LITERALLY right there next to your thumb on the steering wheel, and go way further to change the volume. The knob in the center is placed perfectly for people who rest their right hand on the shifter/center console
Douglas, those gas prices are listed with cash and with credit prices. Many gas stations charge more for a credit charge vs. paying in cash, in order to make back the fee they are charged by their credit card processing company to use their charge system. Also, the Audi TPMS requires the driver to be going 16mph or greater in order to take a tire pressure reading because Audi uses an indirect TPMS system, which doesn’t use a sensor on each tire to measure the tire pressure. Instead, the car uses a combination of laser readings and wheel rotation speed readings along with other calculations to determine if any of the tires are rotating at a different speed from the others, indicating that a tire is under or over inflated. This system requires fewer components, is more reliable, breaks less, doesn’t require a new sensor with new battery each time a tire is replaced, and is even more accurate than a direct system.
9:47 if you are the driver, you use the volum controller on the wheel. If you are the front seat passanger, you use the volume knob that is on the passanger side... and this makes perfect sense as most volume controllers are either on the middle of the dashboard or somewhere near the driver which is really inconvenient. To be honest, this is a much more convenient design. Also, the climate control knob gives you a VERY clear indication that this is a climate control knob.
@@cozza819 Right? I see no logic in trying to reach the volume knob in the middle of the dashboard, if you have one on your steering wheel... I guess this is for those who like to live a dangerous life lol.
That they would only work in country the driver is on the left side. What the theory for right hand side driver in other country because the layout stays the same.
Doug, I generally love your reviews and you are at the top of your game. Here, I wish you would spend more time actually describing how the car drives. How is the suspension? Springs too hard for bumpier roads? Feel everything under you or a nice balance of feel and performance. Once we know what this car is, then the conversation about which Audi you would prefer based on Price/Performance is relevant. How it drives is the main thing and I think that was missed here. Remember, the main thing about the main thing is that it's the main thing.
Nathan Holmes Was just typing the same ;) I LOVE the volume knob position this is where I rest my arm (used to a gear shift). The knob is exactly at my fingertips.
I love the Audi sportback models. It's on my future car list to pick up either an RS5 or RS7 sportback. They have EVERYTHING right. Practical, insane performance, good pricepoint... They're just perfect.
Only gripe is that now the passenger can easily turn down the music. Or I brush against their thigh by accident if I decide to reach for that instead of the steering wheel control.
odd middle storage = coin holder odd fold down storage door left of steering wheel = pistol with silencer tire pressure monitor requiring 16mph is because its wireless... so it needs wheels to be moving to generate electricity to run sensors.
The volume wheel on the steering wheel is 100% the better place to have it anyway. It's clearly designed so the passenger has easy access to it as well. I can't believe that is even a criticism. I was expecting you to say, the volume wheel on the steering wheel is how most people adjust the volume anyway so having it on the center console cluttering things is unnecessary and then follow up by pointing out the secondary knob placed near the passenger so they can still control the volume too, WHICH GOOD THINKING AND DESIGN.
it's there so when you are taking your grandma to the doctor she can hit it on accident and give herself a heart attack thus eliminating the need to take her to the doctor
Doug I own this car and here are answers to your questions: -The center air vent can be adjusted. It is in the climate control. It is so that air doesn't blow straight in to your face. -The small pocket on the right next to the gear lever is for the key fob. That's all its made for. I use it for quarters which works well.
Ervlax Steelcool so they basically said there are no discounts but I still managed to negotiate the final asking. The car arrived with a small chip in the rear bumper which gave me the advantage. I almost cancelled it but they dropped the price by another $1900. As for color I did Nardo gray with red interior. I’m loving it except I have been having some minor rattling from the sunroof lately
@@Jigar3333 The sunroofs in all VAG sedans/sportbacks/hatchbacks all have that problem. I think it might have something to do with the glass being so large. I have one in San Diego in Nardo grey. My only complaint is that the seat massage and heater turn off automatically after a few minutes. Also, the dynamic mode suspension is too bouncy. But this is easy to fix in the “independent “ menu, by using dynamic for everything except suspension, where you use “auto”. Can get a mountain bike and 5’9” surfboard in it with the seats down and the privacy cover off. Funny story about the back window. Good point. And the answer to the why does the mirror blink, it's because some of us never see the light on the dash and go down the road 5 miles with the blinker on. It assumes we use our mirrors.
Douglas, the large center air vent in new Audis is what’s known as the "wide-vent," and can be set to either an open or closed position by toggling the same switch you use to change the climate control setting from 3-way/sync/rear-set options. This wide-vent acts essentially as calibration to maintain desired cabin temperature, and when it is set to the open position, a very subtle airflow is emitted. It is also a useful tool on extremely hot or extremely cold days, as you can use it to test the temperature of the A/C or heat when you are just entering the car. To do this, upon turning the vehicle on, simply set the blower to the off position, but turn the wide-vent to the OPEN toggle option, and you can feel how hot or cold the air is getting. When it is at your desired temperature, you can then turn back the blower for the rest of the vents. This way you won’t be bombarded by hot air on a hot day and frigid air on a frigid day when you just get into the car and turn the vehicle on.
There are little tiny kinetic electrical generators in the TPMS system that need to be spinning a certain speed to generate enough electricity to transmit the tire pressure to the CPU. At least that's what they told us at nissan many years ago.
12:11 This inner light is not Audi-exclusive, most brands of the Volkswagen Group use it. Its purpose is to make sure that you have your turn signal on when making a lane change. Another reason for them is to duplicate the light in the speedometer, e.g. if you‘re not able to see it because of the steering wheel.
I’m a fan of Dougs but he really doesn’t bother thinking logically and it annoys me sometimes 😂 at 12:04... your cockpit would still blink if you turn BUT the light might be out so that wing mirror would let you know if there’s a problem. And at 12:26... using my brain cells, that to me, looks like a nice convenient place to store my fob key, rather than sitting with it in my pocket and causing discomfort.
And having the sunroof open with the screen closed … duh … air flow without being burned by a 12 o clock hot sun. kind of think he just cant find quarks so he makes the up.
Romeo M, funny how you see it like that, it’s called criticism... I’m LITERALLY saying using MY brain cells, meaning, if you think about it, which he clearly didn’t. It’s a critique not insult. I own the normal A5 with only 200PS and I like it a lot. I can run miles over miles at about 6 liters per 100km. Maybe someday I will buy the RS5 or an old R8.
The reason you have to be going 16+ for the tire pressure monitor to work, is because it's actually in the hub of the car. It's not tire mounted like traditional tpms, it judges by the actual rotation speed of the wheel. 👍🏼
Didn't expect the sunshade at 10:20. The fact that the mesh sunshade can be closed with the sunroof open might make this the ultimate car camper. Drop the rear seats, lay out an inflatable travel mattress or memory foam mattress topper, open the sunroof, close the sunshade, and sleep in the back with fresh air (ideally parked under an overhang of some kind if you're expecting rain, lol). I wish more cars with mesh sunshades did this, honestly.
Hi Doug, nice review, but about the little odd things: 1. the little storage space is for the key 2. the dash with the grill from one side to the other is inspired and paying respect to the dash of Audi 100's dash from 1980's ( more or less every European car manufacturer brings back the history and heritage in their cars) 3. the volume placed on the right side middle is only logical as the passenger in the right could easily turn it instead of reaching out to over the gear knob and into the driver near proximity / the driver has one on the wheel anyway...so it makes more sense, isn't it!? 4. tire pressure...over 16 Miles/hour ... well, this is due to the technology involved in measuring the pressure...there are 2 options..first having inside the wheels the monitors of the pressure, that is probably more expensive and over time, not so reliable, if you change a lot the tires, those could be damaged easily, and second, used here, is actually measuring trough the ABS system the rotation speed of every wheel ...is any tire has a lower pressure, will become "smaller" in size, and will turn more to keep up with the rest of the wheels, so hence higher rotation speed...in this way the system is measuring the pressure and detects a fault in pressure with one tire, and that is why you need a speed more than 16 miles per hour to set it, as it needs to register the wheel turns for each tire , and standing still it's impossible... right? :)
Yeah, it’s more than a little disappointing that he didn’t figure on checking cold vs hot PSI… with his 10-second gauge. I get that it’s a 4 yo video that I’m posting on, but I hope he’s since figured it out. 🤷♂️

Not sure if that's the intent, but I put it either there or in the cupholder slot. And the sunshade...I love it. Every car needs one regardless of whether they have a glass panel or traditional sunroof. Allows air movement without any buffeting. Or bugs. Finally, your phone is still in the car.
Fanboy spotted
Agree about the volume knob. Same as my A4. It feels right after a while.

TC Random agree 100% actually great place for volume knob, had it in my S4 now miss it in my X4
I love where the volume knob is. So well thought out for resting arm placement. Also a great place for a passenger.
The volume scroll wheel is for the driver so that you could change the volume without taking your hands off the steering wheel, and the one on the dashboard is for the passenger. I think it's the best way of doing it and it should't be a point to criticize. IMO
When you have your arm on the centre arm rest you can operate the volume control dial.
Yep, and the small compartment is meant for the key

Besides the intro and the Doug score..
Right, why would anyone who has a volume knob on the steering wheel want to use the volume knob on the console anyway
It's not a good design until your passenger keeps bothering you with the volume.

Lol I almost forgot Doug is short for Douglas
Lmao bruh I’ve owned a 2018 A4 for a year and I just now see how to use that vent 😂

The steering wheel thing actually makes a lot of sense too. I noticed in my A4 that the top of the steering wheel obscures the turn signals.

I own the normal A5 with only 200PS and I like it a lot. I can run miles over miles at about 6 liters per 100km. Maybe someday I will buy the RS5 or an old R8.
Andyw1228 buy the r8 from the stradman
Hopefully you can find an R8 that is still in good running condition.
13:05 The pistol storage compartment
Did you see how deep it is? More like SMG storage compartment lmao
YES! Someone else that thought like me. And by pistol I’m assuming an AR Pistol, right? ;)
Sawed off shotgun* ftfy
Audi knows the American market
My first thought was where to hide the drugs!
The reason you have to be going 16+ for the tire pressure monitor to work, is because it's actually in the hub of the car. It's not tire mounted like traditional tpms, it judges by the actual rotation speed of the wheel. 👍🏼
Which is a good thing, because you don't need special valves on the tires.
I guess that’s why we haven’t seen a review of a plane yet.

Here's why the Boeing 737 Max 10 is worth almost 130 million dollars
He should do that one day. And in the outtakes have high revving cars driving passed making a noise lol
_Audi RS3 has left the chat_
I was the 69th person to like ur comment! Just sayin, bye!
Rs3 will smoke this car.. 5 cylinder engine is so much better
@@IGOTGAMEAJ stock for stock not sure but it's a better value though
To me, the Audi infotainment is great! I am an Audi owner. Have a 2016 Audi S3. The Audi connect features are helpful, but the google earth GPS is my favorite! You can even do street views in your gps map. It’s insane.
12:38 Thats for Key fob 🙄🙄
Typical of him not looking up what he doesn't know
Doug is the type of a guy to enter tutorial mode even tho he finished the game 6 times
For the tiny little storage compartment at 12:37, your key goes there as it's a perfect fit when you put it in on its side. My A4 has it too and honestly, I think it's pretty ingenious since it's not too uncommon to lose track of a keyless keyfob every now and then.
i thought people attached their key fobs to their house keys and other thingamajigs on a key ring making them nearly impossible to lose.................................................guess thats just me.
A Tom that’s normal, at least everyone I know does it too
keys also fits in cupholder adjustable things
@@atom5221 when I'm home I don't need key I use the garage homelink but if the power goes out im homeless.
Audi is without a doubt the best sport brand besides Porsche, and they have the best rims you can’t find anywhere but on there cars
